Current-Perpendicular-to-Plane Giant Magnetoresistance Effect in van der Waals Heterostructures

Spin-dependent transport in a full van der Waals (vdW) giant magnetoresistance (GMR) junctions with the structure of Fe3GeTe2/XTe2/Fe3GeTe2 (X = Pt, Pd) has been investigated by using first-principles calculations. The ballistic conductance, magnetoresistance (MR) and resistance-area product (RA) have been calculated in a current-perpendicular-to-plane (CPP) geometry. A giant magnetoresistance of around 2000% and RA less than 0.3 Ω μm2 have been found in the proposed vdW CPP GMR. In addition, the spin-orbit coupling effect on transport and anisotropy magnetoresistance (AMR) has also been investigated. The calculated AMR is found to be around 20% in Fe3GeTe2/trilayer-PdTe2/Fe3GeTe2 CPP GMR. Both GMR and AMR in the proposed vdW CPP GMR mainly originate from the bulk electronic structure properties of Fe3GeTe2. This work demonstrates a vdW CPP GMR with superior advantages including perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, large GMR, low RA as well as sizable AMR may stimulate future experimental explorations and should be appealing for their applications in spintronic devices including magnetic sensor and memory.

Ferroelectric control of Néel vector in L10 type of antiferromagnetic films

How to efficiently manipulate the Néel vector of antiferromagnets (AFM) by electric methods is one of the major focuses in current antiferromagnetic spintronics. In this work, we investigated the ferroelectric control of magnetism in AFM L10-MnPt/BaTiO3 bilayers structures by using first-principles calculation. We studied the effect of ferroelectric polarization reversal on magnetic crystalline anisotropy (MCA) of L10-MnPt films with different interface structures. Our results predict a large perpendicular MCA in L10-MnPt films with Pt-O interface, while an in-plane MCA with Mn-O interface when they are interfaced with ferroelectric BaTiO3. In addition, the magnitude of MCA for both interfaces can be modulated efficiently by the polarization reversal of BaTiO3. The ferroelectric control of MCA has been analyzed based on second order perturbation theory, and it can be mainly attributed to the ferroelectric polarization driven redistribution of Pt-5d orbital occupation around Fermi energy. Especially, for Mn-O interface, the Néel vector can be switched between in-plane [100] and [110] directions, or even from in-plane to out-of-plane at certain film thickness by reversing ferroelectric polarization. Our results may provide a non-volatile concept for ferroelectric control of Néel vector in L10-antiferromagnets, which could stimulate experimental investigations on magnetoelectric effect of antiferromagnets and promote its applications in low-power consumption spintronic memory devices.

Eigenvalue estimates for Beltrami-Laplacian under Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature condition

On closed Riemannian manifolds with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded from below and bounded gradient of the potential function, we obtain lower bounds for all positive eigenvalues of the Beltrami-Laplacian instead of the drifted Laplacian. The lower bound of the $k$th eigenvalue depends on $k$, Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature lower bound, the gradient bound of the potential function, and the dimension and diameter upper bound of the manifold, but the volume of the manifold is not involved. Especially, these results apply to closed manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below.

Van der Waals Multiferroic Tunnel Junctions

Multiferroic tunnel junctions (MFTJs) have aroused significant interest due to their functional properties useful for non-volatile memory devices. So far, however, all the existing MFTJs have been based on perovskite-oxide heterostructures limited by a relatively high resistance-area (RA) product unfavorable for practical applications. Here, using first-principles calculations, we explore spin-dependent transport properties of van der Waals (vdW) MFTJs which consist of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic FenGeTe2 (n = 3, 4, 5) electrodes and 2D ferroelectric In2Se3 barrier layers. We demonstrate that such FemGeTe2/In2Se3/FenGeTe2 (m, n = 3, 4, 5) MFTJs exhibit multiple non-volatile resistance states associated with different polarization orientation of the ferroelectric In2Se3 layer and magnetization alignment of the two ferromagnetic FenGeTe2 layers. We find a remarkably low RA product which makes the proposed vdW MFTJs superior to the conventional MFTJs in terms of their promise for non-volatile memory applications.

Gradient and Eigenvalue Estimates on the canonical bundle of Kähler manifolds

We prove certain gradient and eigenvalue estimates, as well as the heat kernel estimates, for the Hodge Laplacian on $(m,0)$ forms, i.e., sections of the canonical bundle of Kähler manifolds, where $m$ is the complex dimension of the manifold. Instead of the usual dependence on curvature tensor, our condition depends only on the Ricci curvature bound. The proof is based on a new Bochner type formula for the gradient of $(m, 0)$ forms, which involves only the Ricci curvature and the gradient of the scalar curvature.

Quantum-stochasticity-induced asymmetry in angular distribution of electrons in a quasi-classical regime

Impacts of quantum stochasticity on the dynamics of an ultra-relativistic electron beam head-on colliding with a linearly polarized ultra-intense laser pulse are theoretically investigated in a quasi-classical regime. Generally, the angular distribution of the electron beam keeps symmetrically in transverse directions in this regime, even under the ponderomotive force of the laser pulse. Here we show that when the initial angular divergence $Δθ_i \lesssim 10^{-6} a_0^2$ with $a_0$ being the normalized laser field amplitude, an asymmetric angular distribution of the electron beam arises due to the quantum stochasticity effect, via simulations employing Landau-Lifshitz, quantum-modified Landau-Lifshitz equations, and quantum stochastic radiation reaction form to describe the radiative electron dynamics respectively. The asymmetry is robust against a variety of laser and electron parameters, providing an experimentally detectable signature for the nature of quantum stochasticity of photon emission with laser and electron beams currently available.

Li-Yau gradient bounds on compact manifolds under nearly optimal curvature conditions

We prove Li-Yau type gradient bounds for the heat equation either on manifolds with fixed metric or under the Ricci flow. In the former case the curvature condition is $|Ric^-| \in L^p$ for some $p>n/2$, or $\sup_\M \int_\M |Ric^-|^2(y)d^{2-n}(x,y)dy<\infty$, where $n$ is the dimension of the manifold. In the later case, one only needs scalar curvature being bounded. We will explain why the conditions are nearly optimal and give an application. The Li-Yau bound for the heat equation on manifolds with fixed metric seems to be the first one allowing Ricci curvature not bounded from below.

Bounds on harmonic radius and limits of manifolds with bounded Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature

Under the usual condition that the volume of a geodesic ball is close to the Euclidean one or the injectivity radii is bounded from below, we prove a lower bound of the $C^α W^{1, q}$ harmonic radius for manifolds with bounded Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature when the gradient of the potential is bounded. Under these conditions, the regularity that can be imposed on the metrics under harmonic coordinates is only $C^αW^{1,q}$, where $q>2n$ and $n$ is the dimension of the manifolds. This is almost 1 order lower than that in the classical $C^{1,α} W^{2, p}$ harmonic coordinates under bounded Ricci curvature condition [And]. The loss of regularity induces some difference in the method of proof, which can also be used to address the detail of $W^{2, p}$ convergence in the classical case. Based on this lower bound and the techniques in [ChNa2] and [WZ], we extend Cheeger-Naber's Codimension 4 Theorem in [ChNa2] to the case where the manifolds have bounded Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature when the gradient of the potential is bounded. This result covers Ricci solitons when the gradient of the potential is bounded. During the proof, we will use a Green's function argument and adopt a linear algebra argument in [Bam]. A new ingradient is to show that the diagonal entries of the matrices in the Transformation Theorem are bounded away from 0. Together these seem to simplify the proof of the Codimension 4 Theorem, even in the case where Ricci curvature is bounded.

Aronson-Bénilan estimates for the fast diffusion equation under the Ricci flow

We study the fast diffusion equation (FDE) with a linear forcing term under the Ricci flow on complete manifolds with bounded curvature and nonnegative curvature operator. We prove Aronson-Bénilan and Li-Yau-Hamilton type differential Harnack estimates for positive solutions of the FDE. In addition, we use similar method to prove certain Li-Yau-Hamilton estimates for the heat equation and conjugate heat equation which extend those obtained by X. Cao and R. Hamilton, X. Cao, and S. Kuang and Q. Zhang to noncompact setting.

Li-Yau gradient bound for collapsing manifolds under integral curvature condition

Let $(\M^n, g_{ij})$ be a complete Riemammnian manifold. For some constants $p,\ r>0$, define $\displaystyle k(p,r)=\sup_{x\in M}r^2\left(\oint_{B(x,r)}|Ric^-|^p dV\right)^{1/p}$, where $Ric^-$ denotes the negative part of the Ricci curvature tensor. We prove that for any $p>\frac{n}{2}$, when $k(p,1)$ is small enough, certain Li-Yau type gradient bound holds for the positive solutions of the heat equation on geodesic balls $B(O,r)$ in $\M$ with $0<r\leq 1$. Here the assumption that $k(p,1)$ being small allows the situation where the manifolds is collapsing. Recall that in \cite{ZZ}, certain Li-Yau gradient bounds was also obtained by the authors, assuming that $|Ric^-|\in L^p(\M)$ and the manifold is noncollaped. Therefore, to some extent, the results in this paper and in \cite{ZZ} complete the picture of Li-Yau gradient bound for the heat equation on manifolds with $|Ric^-|$ being $L^p$ integrable, modulo sharpness of constants.

New Volume Comparison results and Applications to degeneration of Riemannian metrics

We consider a condition on the Ricci curvature involving vector fields, which is broader than the Bakry-Émery Ricci condition. Under this condition volume comparison, Laplacian comparison, isoperimetric inequality and gradient bounds are proven on the manifold. Specializing to the Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature condition, we initiate an approach to work on the original manifold, which yields, under a weaker than usual assumption, the results mentioned above for the {\it original manifold}. These results are different from most well known ones in the literature where the conclusions are made on the weighted manifold instead. Applications on convergence and degeneration of Riemannian metrics under this curvature condition are given. To this effect, in particular for the Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature condition, the gradient of the potential function is allowed to have singularity of order close to $1$ while the traditional method of weighted manifolds allows bounded gradient. This approach enables us to extend some of the results in the papers \cite{Co}, \cite{ChCo2}, \cite{zZh}, \cite{TZ} and \cite{WZ}. The condition also covers general Ricci solitons instead of just gradient Ricci solitons.

Aronson-Bénilan estimates for the porous medium equation under the Ricci flow

In this paper we study the porous medium equation (PME) coupled with the Ricci flow on complete manifolds with bounded nonnegative curvature operator. In particular, we derive Aronson-Bénilan and Li-Yau-Hamilton type differential Harnack estimates for positive solutions to the PME, with a linear forcing term, under the Ricci flow.

Davies type estimate and the heat kernel bound under the Ricci flow

We prove a Davies type double integral estimate for the heat kernel $H(y,t;x,l)$ under the Ricci flow. As a result, we give an affirmative answer to a question proposed by Chow etc.. Moreover, we apply the Davies type estimate to provide a new proof of the Gaussian upper and lower bounds of $H(y,t;x,l)$ which were first shown by Chau-Tam-Yu.

On rigidity of gradient Kähler-Ricci solitons with harmonic Bochner tensor

In this paper, we prove that complete gradient steady Kähler-Ricci solitons with harmonic Bochner tensor are necessarily Kähler-Ricci flat, i.e., Calabi-Yau, and that complete gradient shrinking (or expanding) Kähler-Ricci solitons with harmonic Bochner tensor must be isometric to a quotient of $N^k\times \mathbb{C}^{n-k}$, where $N$ is a Kähler-Einstein manifold with positive (or negative) scalar curvature.

Network Topologies and Dynamics Leading to Endotoxin Tolerance and Priming in Innate Immune Cells

The innate immune system, acting as the first line of host defense, senses and adapts to foreign challenges through complex intracellular and intercellular signaling networks. Endotoxin tolerance and priming elicited by macrophages are classic examples of the complex adaptation of innate immune cells. Upon repetitive exposures to different doses of bacterial endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide) or other stimulants, macrophages show either suppressed or augmented inflammatory responses compared to a single exposure to the stimulant. Endotoxin tolerance and priming are critically involved in both immune homeostasis and the pathogenesis of diverse inflammatory diseases. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not well understood. By means of a computational search through the parameter space of a coarse-grained three-node network with a two-stage Metropolis sampling approach, we enumerated all the network topologies that can generate priming or tolerance. We discovered three major mechanisms for priming (pathway synergy, suppressor deactivation, activator induction) and one for tolerance (inhibitor persistence). These results not only explain existing experimental observations, but also reveal intriguing test scenarios for future experimental studies to clarify mechanisms of endotoxin priming and tolerance.

On second variation of Perelman's Ricci shrinker entropy

In this paper we provide a detailed proof of the second variation formula, essentially due to Richard Hamilton, Tom Ilmanen and the first author, for Perelman's $ν$-entropy. In particular, we correct an error in the stability operator stated in Theorem 6.3 of [2]. Moreover, we obtain a necessary condition for linearly stable shrinkers in terms of the least eigenvalue and its multiplicity of certain Lichnerowicz type operator associated to the second variation.

Resonant activation: a strategy against bacterial persistence

A bacterial colony may develop a small number of cells genetically identical to, but phenotypically different from other normally growing bacteria. These so-called persister cells keep themselves in a dormant state and thus are insensitive to antibiotic treatment, resulting in serious problems of drug resistance. In this paper, we proposed a novel strategy to "kill" persister cells by triggering them to switch, in a fast and synchronized way, into normally growing cells that are susceptible to antibiotics. The strategy is based on resonant activation (RA), a well-studied phenomenon in physics where the internal noise of a system can constructively facilitate fast and synchronized barrier crossings. Through stochastic Gilliespie simulation with a generic toggle switch model, we demonstrated that RA exists in the phenotypic switching of a single bacterium. Further, by coupling single cell level and population level simulations, we showed that with RA, one can greatly reduce the time and total amount of antibiotics needed to sterilize a bacterial population. We suggest that resonant activation is a general phenomenon in phenotypic transition, and can find other applications such as cancer therapy.
