Nonlinear Bayesian Estimation: From Kalman Filtering to a Broader Horizon

This article presents an up-to-date tutorial review of nonlinear Bayesian estimation. State estimation for nonlinear systems has been a challenge encountered in a wide range of engineering fields, attracting decades of research effort. To date, one of the most promising and popular approaches is to view and address the problem from a Bayesian probabilistic perspective, which enables estimation of the unknown state variables by tracking their probabilistic distribution or statistics (e.g., mean and covariance) conditioned on the system's measurement data. This article offers a systematic introduction of the Bayesian state estimation framework and reviews various Kalman filtering (KF) techniques, progressively from the standard KF for linear systems to extended KF, unscented KF and ensemble KF for nonlinear systems. It also overviews other prominent or emerging Bayesian estimation methods including the Gaussian filtering, Gaussian-sum filtering, particle filtering and moving horizon estimation and extends the discussion of state estimation forward to more complicated problems such as simultaneous state and parameter/input estimation.

A Distributed Dynamic Programming-based Solution for Load Management in Smart Grids

Load management is being recognized as an important option for active user participation in the energy market. Traditional load management methods usually require a centralized powerful control center and a two-way communication network between the system operators and energy end-users. The increasing user participation in smart grids may limit their applications. In this paper, a distributed solution for load management in emerging smart grids is proposed. The load management problem is formulated as a constrained optimization problem aiming at maximizing the overall utility of users while meeting the requirement for load reduction requested by the system operator, and is solved by using a distributed dynamic programming algorithm. The algorithm is implemented via a distributed framework and thus can deliver a highly desired distributed solution. It avoids the required use of a centralized coordinator or control center, and can achieve satisfactory outcomes for load management. Simulation results with various test systems demonstrate its effectiveness.

Topology Discovery for Linear Wireless Networks with Application to Train Backbone Inauguration

A train backbone network consists of a sequence of nodes arranged in a linear topology. A key step that enables communication in such a network is that of topology discovery, or train inauguration, whereby nodes learn in a distributed fashion the physical topology of the backbone network. While the current standard for train inauguration assumes wired links between adjacent backbone nodes, this work investigates the more challenging scenario in which the nodes communicate wirelessly. The key motivations for this desired switch from wired topology discovery to wireless one are the flexibility and capability for expansion and upgrading of a wireless backbone. The implementation of topology discovery over wireless channels is made difficult by the broadcast nature of the wireless medium, and by fading and interference. A novel topology discovery protocol is proposed that overcomes these issues and requires relatively minor changes to the wired standard. The protocol is shown via analysis and numerical results to be robust to the impairments caused by the wireless channel including interference from other trains.

Transformation From Legal-marking Set to Admissible-marking Set of Petri Nets With Uncontrollable Transitions

Linear constraint transformation is an essential step to solve the forbidden state problem in Petri nets that contain uncontrollable transitions. This work studies the equivalent transformation from a legal-marking set to its admissible-marking set given such a net. First, the concepts of an escaping-marking set and a transforming marking set are defined. Based on them, two algorithms are given to compute the admissible-marking set and the transforming marking set, which establish the theoretical foundation for the equivalent transformation of linear constraints. Second, the theory about the equivalent transformation of a disjunction of linear constraints imposed to Petri nets with uncontrollable transitions is established. Third, two rules are given to decide the priority of transitions for transformation. Finally, the transformation procedure from a given linear constraint to a logic expression of linear constraints that can describe its entire admissible-marking set is illustrated via two examples.
