An Asymptotic-Preserving Dynamical Low-Rank Semi-Lagrangian Method for Multiscale Linear Kinetic Transport Equations

In this paper, we develop an asymptotic-preserving (AP) dynamical low-rank semi-Lagrangian method for multiscale linear kinetic transport equations. The method combines the large-time-step capability of semi-Lagrangian discretizations with the storage and cost reduction provided by low-rank representations. The proposed scheme couples an approximate macroscopic density update with the basis update Galerkin integrator for the kinetic distribution. To retain the reduced complexity in the semi-Lagrangian flux evaluation, the flux derivative is computed through a sampled angular quadrature strategy. We establish an unconditional stability analysis of the full-quadrature low-rank scheme in the constant-coefficient case. The error induced by angular sampling in the flux derivative is quantified. The resulting scheme is shown to be AP in the diffusive limit. Numerical experiments, including high-dimensional test cases, demonstrate that the proposed method is AP, stable under large time steps, and computationally efficient across kinetic and diffusive regimes.

MathCoPilot: An Interactive System for Human-AI Symbiotic Paradigm of Mathematical Research

Existing LLM-based theorem provers have achieved impressive results on formal mathematics benchmarks, yet they remain confined to acting as autonomous agents that prove a stated proposition. In this paper, we propose MathCoPilot, a human-in-the-loop system that embodies a new human--AI symbiotic paradigm for mathematical research, in which the mathematician steers the high-level mathematical direction while AI agents carry out the detailed formalization and proof work under continuous human guidance. MathCoPilot unifies three core capabilities: (1) an interactive workbench where the mathematician and AI agents collaborate through a living proof blueprint that decomposes a proof into navigable steps the human can directly inspect, direct, and refine; (2) automated proving skill orchestration with adaptive knowledge base search and Lean-integrated iterative verification; and (3) topic-driven paper retrieval and automated formalization into a verified Lean knowledge base. Using MathCoPilot, we systematically compare four state-of-the-art LLMs, including Gemini~3.1~Pro, GPT-5.4, and Claude~Opus~4.7, on a FormalMATH subset and on two real PDE theorems requiring deep domain expertise, evaluating their ability to produce verified Lean~4 proofs and to identify errors in deliberately incorrect proofs. Our results show that while current models can handle undergraduate-level problems with high success rates under favorable autoformalization conditions, substantial challenges remain for domain-specific theorems requiring genuine mathematical understanding.

Temporal-Stability-Enhanced and Energy-Stable Dynamical Low-Rank Approximation for Multiscale Linear Kinetic Transport Equations

In this paper, we develop an asymptotic-preserving dynamical low-rank method for the multiscale linear kinetic transport equation. The proposed scheme is unconditionally stable in the diffusive regime while preserving the correct asymptotic behavior, and can achieve significant reductions in computational cost through a low-rank representation and large time step stability. A low-rank formulation consistent with the discrete energy is introduced under the discrete ordinates discretization, and energy stability of the resulting scheme is established. Numerical experiments confirm the energy stability and demonstrate that the method is efficient while maintaining accuracy across different regimes and capturing the correct asymptotic limits.

Structure-preserving nodal DG method for Euler equations with gravity II: general equilibrium states

We develop an entropy-stable nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for the Euler equations with gravity, which is also well-balanced with respect to general equilibrium solutions, including both hydrostatic and moving equilibria. The core of our approach lies in a novel treatment of the gravitational source term, combining entropy-conservative numerical fluxes with a linear entropy correction. In addition, the proposed formulation is carefully designed to ensure compatibility with a positivity-preserving limiter. We provide a rigorous theoretical analysis to establish the accuracy and structure-preserving properties of the proposed scheme. Extensive numerical experiments confirm the robustness and efficiency of the scheme.

Inverse Lax-Wendroff boundary treatment for solving conservation laws with finite difference HWENO methods

This paper presents a novel inverse Lax-Wendroff (ILW) boundary treatment for finite difference Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) schemes to solve hyperbolic conservation laws on arbitrary geometries. The complex geometric domain is divided by a uniform Cartesian grid, resulting in challenge in boundary treatment. The proposed ILW boundary treatment could provide high order approximations of both solution values and spatial derivatives at ghost points outside the computational domain. Distinct from existing ILW approaches, our boundary treatment constructs the extrapolation via optimized through a least squares formulation, coupled with the spatial derivatives at the boundary obtained via the ILW procedure. Theoretical analysis indicates that compared with other ILW methods, our proposed one would require fewer terms by using the relatively complicated ILW procedure and thus improve computational efficiency while preserving accuracy and stability. The effectiveness and robustness of the method are validated through numerical experiments.

Structure-preserving nodal DG method for the Euler equations with gravity: well-balanced, entropy stable, and positivity preserving

We propose an entropy stable and positivity preserving discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for the Euler equations with gravity, which is also well-balanced for hydrostatic equilibrium states. To achieve these properties, we utilize the nodal DG framework and carefully design the source term discretization using entropy conservative fluxes. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the proposed methodology is compatible with a positivity preserving scaling limiter, ensuring positivity of density and pressure under an appropriate CFL condition. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first DG scheme to simultaneously achieve these three properties with theoretical justification. Numerical examples further demonstrate its robustness and efficiency.

A globally divergence-free entropy stable nodal DG method for conservative ideal MHD equations

We propose an arbitrarily high-order globally divergence-free entropy stable nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method to directly solve the conservative form of the ideal MHD equations using appropriate quadrature rules. The method ensures a globally divergence-free magnetic field by updating it at interfaces with a constraint-preserving formulation [5] and employing a novel least-squares reconstruction technique. Leveraging this property, the semi-discrete nodal DG scheme is proven to be entropy stable. To handle the problems with strong shocks, we introduce a novel limiting strategy that suppresses unphysical oscillations while preserving the globally divergence-free property. Numerical experiments verify the accuracy and efficacy of our method.

Non-oscillatory entropy stable DG schemes for hyperbolic conservation law

In this paper, we propose a class of non-oscillatory, entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin (NOES-DG) schemes for solving hyperbolic conservation laws. By incorporating a specific form of artificial viscosity, our new scheme directly controls entropy production and suppresses spurious oscillations. To address the stiffness introduced by the artificial terms, which can restrict severely time step sizes, we employ the integration factor strong stability-preserving Runge-Kutta method for time discretization. Furthermore, our method remains compatible with positivity-preserving limiters under suitable CFL conditions in extreme cases. Various numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed scheme, showing that it maintains high-order accuracy in smooth regions and avoids spurious oscillations near discontinuities.

A new type of simplified inverse Lax-Wendroff boundary treatment I: hyperbolic conservation laws

In this paper, we design a new kind of high order inverse Lax-Wendroff (ILW) boundary treatment for solving hyperbolic conservation laws with finite difference method on a Cartesian mesh. This new ILW method decomposes the construction of ghost point values near inflow boundary into two steps: interpolation and extrapolation. At first, we impose values of some artificial auxiliary points through a polynomial interpolating the interior points near the boundary. Then, we will construct a Hermite extrapolation based on those auxiliary point values and the spatial derivatives at boundary obtained via the ILW procedure. This polynomial will give us the approximation to the ghost point value. By an appropriate selection of those artificial auxiliary points, high-order accuracy and stable results can be achieved. Moreover, theoretical analysis indicates that comparing with the original ILW method, especially for higher order accuracy, the new proposed one would require fewer terms using the relatively complicated ILW procedure and thus improve computational efficiency on the premise of maintaining accuracy and stability. We perform numerical experiments on several benchmarks, including one- and two-dimensional scalar equations and systems. The robustness and efficiency of the proposed scheme is numerically verified.

Sub-optimal convergence of discontinuous Galerkin methods with central fluxes for linear hyperbolic equations with even degree polynomial approximations

In this paper, we theoretically and numerically verify that the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods with central fluxes for linear hyperbolic equations on non-uniform meshes have sub-optimal convergence properties when measured in the $L^2$-norm for even degree polynomial approximations. On uniform meshes, the optimal error estimates are provided for arbitrary number of cells in one and multi-dimensions, improving previous results. The theoretical findings are found to be sharp and consistent with numerical results.

Free-stream preserving finite difference schemes for ideal magnetohydrodynamics on curvilinear meshes

In this paper, a high order free-stream preserving finite difference weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme is developed for the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations on curvilinear meshes. Under the constrained transport framework, magnetic potential evolved by a Hamilton-Jacobi (H-J) equation is introduced to control the divergence error. In this work, we use the alternative formulation of WENO scheme [10] for the nonlinear hyperbolic conservation law, and design a novel method to solve the magnetic potential. Theoretical derivation and numerical results show that the scheme can preserve free-stream solutions of MHD equations, and reduce error more effectively than the standard finite difference WENO schemes for such problems.

A Kernel Based Unconditionally Stable Scheme for Nonlinear Parabolic Partial Differential Equations

In this paper, a class of high order numerical schemes is proposed to solve the nonlinear parabolic equations with variable coefficients. This method is based on our previous work [10] for convection-diffusion equations, which relies on a special kernel-based formulation of the solutions and successive convolution. However, disadvantages appear when we extend the previous method to our equations, such as inefficient choice of parameters and unprovable stability for high-dimensional problems. To overcome these difficulties, a new kernel-based formulation is designed to approach the spatial derivatives. It maintains the good properties of the original one, including the high order accuracy and unconditionally stable for one-dimensional problems, hence allowing much larger time step evolution compared with other explicit schemes. In additional, without extra computational cost, the proposed scheme can enlarge the available interval of the special parameter in the formulation, leading to less errors and higher efficiency. Moreover, theoretical investigations indicate that it is unconditionally stable for multi-dimensional problems as well. We present numerical tests for one- and two-dimensional scalar and system, demonstrating the designed high order accuracy and unconditionally stable property of the scheme.

Superconvergence of ultra-weak discontinuous Galerkin methods for the linear Schr\"odinger equation in one dimension

We analyze the superconvergence properties of ultra-weak discontinuous Galerkin (UWDG) methods with various choices of flux parameters for one-dimensional linear Schr\"odinger equation. In our previous work [10], stability and optimal convergence rate are established for a large class of flux parameters. Depending on the flux choices and if the polynomial degree $k$ is even or odd, in this paper, we prove $2k$ or $(2k-1)$-th order superconvergence rate for cell averages and numerical flux of the function, as well as $(2k-1)$ or $(2k-2)$-th order for numerical flux of the derivative. In addition, we prove superconvergence of $(k+2)$ or $(k+3)$-th order of the DG solution towards a special projection. At a class of special points, the function values and the first and second order derivatives of the DG solution are superconvergent with order $k+2, k+1, k$, respectively. The proof relies on the correction function techniques initiated in [8], and applied to [6] for direct DG (DDG) methods for diffusion problems. Compared with [6], Schr\"odinger equation poses unique challenges for superconvergence proof because of the lack of the dissipation mechanism from the equation. One major highlight of our proof is that we introduce specially chosen test functions in the error equation and show the superconvergence of the second derivative and jump across the cell interfaces of the difference between numerical solution and projected exact solution. This technique was originally proposed in [12] and is essential to elevate the convergence order for our analysis. Finally, by negative norm estimates, we apply the post-processing technique and show that the accuracy of our scheme can be enhanced to order $2k.$ Theoretical results are verified by numerical experiments.

Sparse Grid Central Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Linear Hyperbolic Systems in High Dimensions

In this paper, we develop sparse grid central discontinuous Galerkin (CDG) scheme for linear hyperbolic systems with variable coefficients in high dimensions. The scheme combines the CDG framework with the sparse grid approach, with the aim of breaking the curse of dimensionality. A new hierarchical representation of piecewise polynomials on the dual mesh is introduced and analyzed, resulting in a sparse finite element space that can be used for non-periodic problems. Theoretical results, such as $L^2$ stability and error estimates are obtained for scalar problems. CFL conditions are studied numerically comparing discontinuous Galerkin (DG), CDG, sparse grid DG and sparse grid CDG methods. Numerical results including scalar linear equations, acoustic and elastic waves are provided.
