Low volume fraction of high-Tc superconductivity in La3Ni2O7 at 80 K and ambient pressure

The discovery of superconductivity in pressurized La3Ni2O7 with a transition temperature of approximately 80 K above the boiling point of liquid nitrogen has sparked significant attention. It is essential to search for high-temperature superconductivity in bulk samples and at ambient pressure in nickelates. In this study, we report influential factors that affect the appearance of superconductivity in La3Ni2O7 at ambient pressure. From direct-current magnetic measurements, we observe a clear diamagnetic response at 80 K in post-annealed single crystals of La3Ni2O7 in oxygen. The superconducting volume fraction is estimated to be within 0.2%, resulting in a decrease in resistivity. This work presents a practical approach for further investigating high-temperature superconductivity in nickelates at ambient pressure.

Low-temperature mean valence of nickel ions in pressurized La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

The discovery of high critical temperature (Tc) superconductivity in pressurized La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ has ignited renewed excitement in the search of novel high-Tc superconducting compounds with 3d transition metals. Compared to other ambient-pressure superconductors, such as copper-oxide and iron-oxypnictides, unraveling the mechanisms of the pressure-induced superconductivity poses significant and unique challenges. A critical factor in this phenomenon seems to be related to the electronic configuration of 3d orbitals, which may play a fundamental role in driving high-Tc superconductivity. However, the pressure effects on the mixed-valence states of 3d-orbital cations and their influence on the emergence of high-Tc superconductivity remain poorly understood. Here, we use high-pressure (P) and low-temperature synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy to investigate the influence of pressure on the mean valence change of Ni ions in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$. Our results demonstrate that at a low-temperature of 20 K, the mean valence remains relatively stable across the pressures range from 1 atm to 40 GPa. Based on analyzing the absorption data, we find that, at a critical pressure, the ambient-pressure ordered phases disappear and both the structural and the superconducting phase transition occur. The pressure-induced structural phase transition revealed by our absorption results is consistent with that determined by X-ray diffraction, offering new information for a comprehensive understanding on the pressure-induced superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$.

Strongly Anisotropic Charge Dynamics in La3Ni2O7 with Coherent-to-Incoherent Crossover of Interlayer Charge Dynamics

We report an optical spectroscopy study of the charge-dynamics anisotropy in the La3Ni2O7 single crystals with the electric field of the incident light parallel to the crystalline c-axis and ab-plane respectively. The evolution of the low-energy part of its c-axis optical conductivity spectra (σ1c(ω)) from a Drude component to a finite-energy peak, together with the change in the c-axis electron mean-free-path which is distinctly longer than the c-axis lattice constant at 10 K but is shorter than the c-axis lattice constant at 300 K, demonstrates a crossover from coherent to incoherent interlayer charge dynamics in La3Ni2O7, which is associated with the variation from weak to strong dissipation within its ab-plane. In contrast, the Drude component robust in its σ1ab(ω) and the long ab-plane electron mean-free-path greater than the a-axis and b-axis unit-cell lengths manifest the persistence of coherent in-plane charge dynamics from 10 to 300 K. Thus, the charge dynamics in La3Ni2O7 shows a remarkable anisotropy at high temperatures. At low temperatures, the large values of the ratio between the ab-plane and c-axis Drude weights and the ratio σ1ab(ω -> 0)/σ1c(ω -> 0) indicate a strong anisotropy of the low-temperature charge dynamics in La3Ni2O7.

Evolution of Electronic Correlations in the Ruddlesden-Popper Nickelates

We report on optical studies of the Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates La$_{n+1}$Ni$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ with $n = 2$ (La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$), $n = 3$ (La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{10}$) and $n = \infty$ (LaNiO$_{3}$). As the number of the NiO$_{6}$ octahedra layers $n$ grows, the ratio of the kinetic energy determined from the experimental optical conductivity and that from band theory $K_{\text{exp}}/K_{\text{band}}$ increases, suggesting a reduction of electronic correlations. While the strong electronic correlations in the bilayer La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ place it on the verge of the Mott insulating phase, the trilayer La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{10}$ and infinite-layer LaNiO$_{3}$ exhibit moderate electronic correlations, falling into the regime of correlated metals. The evolution of the electronic correlations in La$_{n+1}$Ni$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ is likely to be dominated by the Ni-$d_{z^2}$ orbital. Our results provide important information for understanding the superconductivity in Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates.

Signature of Superconductivity in Pressurized Trilayer-nickelate Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-δ}$

The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ under pressure has drawn extensive attention. Herein, we report systematic investigations on the evolutions of structure, magnetism, and electrical resistance of Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-δ}$ polycrystalline samples under various pressures. Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-δ}$ exhibits density wave transitions on Ni and Pr sublattices at about 158 K and 4.3 K, respectively, and the density wave can be progressively suppressed by pressure. A structural transformation from the monoclinic $P2_1/a$ space group to the tetragonal $I4/mmm$ occurs at around 20 GPa. An apparent drop in resistance with evident magnetic field dependence is observed as pressure above 20 GPa, indicating the emergence of superconductivity in Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-δ}$ polycrystalline samples. The discovery of the signature of superconductivity in Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-δ}$ broadens the family of nickelate superconductors and provides a new platform for investigating the mechanisms of superconductivity in the Ruddlesden-Popper phases of nickelates.

Orbital-Dependent Electron Correlation in Double-Layer Nickelate La3Ni2O7

The latest discovery of high temperature superconductivity near 80K in La3Ni2O7 under high pressure has attracted much attention. Many proposals are put forth to understand the origin of superconductivity. The determination of electronic structures is a prerequisite to establish theories to understand superconductivity in nickelates but is still lacking. Here we report our direct measurement of the electronic structures of La3Ni2O7 by high-resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The Fermi surface and band structures of La3Ni2O7 are observed and compared with the band structure calculations. Strong electron correlations are revealed which are orbital- and momentum dependent. A flat band is formed from the Ni-3dz2 orbitals around the zone corner which is ~50meV below the Fermi level and exhibits the strongest electron correlation. In many theoretical proposals, this band is expected to play the dominant role in generating superconductivity in La3Ni2O7. Our observations provide key experimental information to understand the electronic structure and origin of high temperature superconductivity in La3Ni2O7.

High-temperature superconductivity with zero-resistance and strange metal behavior in La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7-δ}$

Recently signatures of superconductivity were observed close to 80 K in \LN\ under pressure. This discovery positions \LN\ as the first bulk nickelate with high-temperature superconductivity, but the lack of zero resistance presents a significant drawback for validating the findings. Here we report pressure measurements up to over 30 GPa using a liquid pressure medium and show that single crystals of \LNO\ do exhibit zero resistance. We find that \LNO\ remains metallic under applied pressures, suggesting the absence of a metal-insulator transition proximate to the superconductivity. Analysis of the normal state $T$-linear resistance suggests an intricate link between this strange metal behaviour and superconductivity, whereby at high pressures both the linear resistance coefficient and superconducting transition are slowly suppressed by pressure, while at intermediate pressures both the superconductivity and strange metal behaviour appear disrupted, possibly due to a nearby structural instability. The association between strange metal behaviour and high-temperature superconductivity is very much in line with diverse classes of unconventional superconductors, including the cuprates and Fe-based superconductors. Understanding the superconductivity of \LNO\ evidently requires further revealing the interplay of strange metal behaviour, superconductivity, as well as possible competing electronic or structural phases.

Neutron Scattering Studies on the High-$T_c$ Superconductor La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ at Ambient Pressure

After several decades of studies of high-temperature superconductivity, there is no compelling theory for the mechanism yet; however, the spin fluctuations have been widely believed to play a crucial role in forming the superconducting Cooper pairs. The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity near 80 K in the bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure provides a new platform to elucidate the origins of high-temperature superconductivity. We perform elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies on a polycrystalline sample of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ at ambient pressure. No magnetic order can be identified down to 10 K. The absence of long-range magnetic order in neutron diffraction measurements may be ascribed to the smallness of the magnetic moment. However, we observe a weak flat spin-fluctuation signal at $\sim$ 45 meV in the inelastic scattering spectra. The observed spin excitations could be interpreted as a result of strong interlayer and weak intralayer magnetic couplings for stripe-type antiferromagnetic orders. Our results provide crucial information on the spin dynamics and are thus important for understanding the superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$.

Electronic correlations and partial gap in the bilayer nickelate La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$

The discovery of superconductivity with a critical temperature of about 80~K in La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystals under pressure has received enormous attention. La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ is not superconducting under ambient pressure but exhibits a transition at $T^{\ast} \simeq 115$~K. Understanding the electronic correlations and charge dynamics is an important step towards the origin of superconductivity and other instabilities. Here, our optical study shows that La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ features strong electronic correlations which significantly reduce the electron's kinetic energy and place this system in the proximity of the Mott phase. The low-frequency optical conductivity reveals two Drude components arising from multiple bands at the Fermi level. The transition at $T^{\ast}$ removes the Drude component exhibiting non-Fermi liquid behavior, whereas the one with Fermi-liquid behavior is barely affected. These observations in combination with theoretical results suggest that the Fermi surface dominated by the Ni-$d_{3z^{2}-r^{2}}$ orbital is removed due to the transition at $T^{\ast}$. Our experimental results provide pivotal information for understanding the transition at $T^{\ast}$ and superconductivity in La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$.

Structural transition, electric transport, and electronic structures in the compressed trilayer nickelate La4Ni3O10

Atomic structure and electronic band structure are fundamental properties for understanding the mechanism of superconductivity. Motivated by the discovery of pressure-induced high-temperature superconductivity at 80 K in the bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper nickelate La3Ni2O7, the atomic structure and electronic band structure of the trilayer nickelate La4Ni3O10 under pressure up to 44.3 GPa are investigated. A structural transition from the monoclinic P21/a space group to the tetragonal I4/mmm around 12.6-13.4 GPa is identified, accompanying with a drop of resistance below 7 K. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the bonding state of Ni 3dz2 orbital rises and crosses the Fermi level at high pressures, which may give rise to possible superconductivity observed in resistance under pressure in La4Ni3O10. The trilayer nickelate La4Ni3O10 shows some similarities with the bilayer La3Ni2O7 and has unique properties, providing a new platform to investigate the underlying mechanism of superconductivity in nickelates.

Gap and magnetic engineering via doping and pressure in tuning the colossal magnetoresistance in (Mn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$)$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$

Ferrimagnetic nodal-line semiconductor Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ keeps the records of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) and angular magnetoresistance (AMR). Here we report tuning the electronic transport properties via doping and pressure in (Mn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$)$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$. As the substitution of nonmagnetic Mg$^{2+}$ for magnetic Mn$^{2+}$, ferrimagnetic transition temperature $T_C$ gradually decreases, while the resistivity increases significantly. At the same time, the CMR and AMR are both enhanced for the low-doping compositions (e.g., $x = 0.1$ and 0.2), which can be attributed to doping-induced broadening of the band gap and a larger variation range of the resistivity when undergoing a metal-insulator transition by applying a magnetic field along the $c$ axis. On the contrary, $T_C$ rises with increasing pressure due to the enhancement of the magnetic exchange interactions until a structural transition occurs at $\sim$13 GPa. Meanwhile, the activation gap is lowered under pressure and the magnetoresistance is decreased dramatically above 6 GPa where the gap is closed. At 20 and 26 GPa, evidences for a superconducting transition at $\sim$5 K are observed. The results reveal that doping and pressure are effective methods to tune the activation gap, and correspondingly, the CMR and AMR in nodal-line semiconductors, providing an approach to investigate the magnetoresistance materials for novel spintronic devices.

The de Haas-van Alphen quantum oscillations in the kagome metal RbTi3Bi5

Kagome system usually attracts great interest in condensed matter physics due to its unique structure hosting various exotic states such as superconductivity (SC), charge density wave (CDW), and nontrivial topological states. Topological semimetal RbTi3Bi5 consisting of the kagome layer of Ti shares a similar crystal structure to topological correlated materials AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) but with the absence of CDW and SC. Systematic de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation measurements are performed on the single crystals of RbTi3Bi5 to pursue nontrivial topological physics and exotic states. Combining with theoretical calculations, detailed Fermi surface topology and band structure are investigated. A two-dimensional (2D) Fermi pocket \b{eta} is revealed with a light-effective mass in consistent with the semimetal predictions. Landau Fan of RbTi3Bi5 reveals a zero Berry phase for the \b{eta} oscillation in contrast to that of CsTi3Bi5. These results suggest the kagome RbTi3Bi5 is a good candidate to explore nontrivial topological exotic states and topological correlated physics.

Visualization of Oxygen Vacancies and Self-doped Ligand Holes in La3Ni2O7-δ

The recent discovery of superconductivity in La3Ni2O7-δ under high pressure with a transition temperature around 80 K has sparked extensive experimental and theoretical efforts. Several key questions regarding the pairing mechanism remain to be answered, such as the most relevant atomic orbitals and the role of atomic deficiencies. Here, we develop a new energy-filtered multislice electron ptychography technique, assisted with electron energy loss spectroscopy, to address these critical issues. Oxygen vacancies are directly visualized and are found to primarily occupy the inner apical sites, which have been proposed to be crucial to superconductivity. We precisely determine the nanoscale stoichiometry and its correlation to the oxygen K edge spectra, which reveals a significant inhomogeneity in the oxygen content and electronic structure within the sample. The spectroscopic results also unveil that stoichiometric La3Ni2O7 is in the charge-transfer regime, with holes that are self-doped from Ni sites into O sites. The outer apical oxygen is found to be less relevant to the low-energy physics and can be safely disregarded in theoretical models. These observations will assist in further development and understanding of superconducting nickelate materials. Our imaging technique for quantifying atomic deficiencies can also be widely applied in materials science and condensed matter physics.

Superconductivity near 80 Kelvin in single crystals of La3Ni2O7 under pressure

High-transition-temperature (high-T_c) superconductivity in cuprates has been discovered for more than three decades, but the underlying mechanism remains a mystery. Cuprates are the only unconventional superconducting family that host bulk superconductivity with T_cs above the liquid nitrogen boiling temperature at 77 Kelvin. Here we report an observation of superconductivity in single crystals of La3Ni2O7 with a maximum T_c of 80 Kelvin at pressures between 14.0-43.5 gigapascals using high-pressure resistance and mutual inductive magnetic susceptibility measurements. The superconducting phase under high pressure exhibits an orthorhombic structure of Fmmm space group with the 3d_(x^2-y^2 ) and 3d_(z^2 ) orbitals of Ni cations strongly interacting with oxygen 2p orbitals. Our density functional theory calculations suggest the superconductivity emerges coincidently with the metallization of the σ-bonding bands under the Fermi level, consisting of the 3d_(z^2 ) orbitals with the apical oxygens connecting Ni-O bilayers. Thus, our discoveries not only reveal important clues for the high-T_c superconductivity in this Ruddlesden-Popper double-layered perovskite nickelates but also provide a new family of compounds to investigate the high-T_c superconductivity mechanism.

Anisotropic magnetism and electronic properties of the kagome metal SmV6Sn6

Kagome magnets are expected to feature emergent properties due to the interplays among geometry, magnetism, electronic correlation, and band topology. The magnetism and topological electronic states can be tuned via the rare earth engineering in RV6Sn6 kagome metals, where R is a rare earth element. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of SmV6Sn6, a metal with two-dimensional kagome nets of vanadium and frustrated triangular Sm lattice. Partial of the Sm atoms are shifted from the normal R positions by c/2 along the c axis. Magnetic measurements reveal obvious anisotropy, where the easy magnetic axis is within the ab plane. Electronic transports show multiband behaviors below 200 K. Density functional theory calculations find that the electronic structure of SmV6Sn6 hosts flat bands, Dirac cone, and saddle point arising from the V-3d electrons near the Fermi level. No evidence for the existence of charge density wave or magnetic order down to 2 K can be observed. Thus, SmV6Sn6 can be viewed as a modest disordered derivative of the RV6Sn6 structure, in which the disordered rare earth ions can suppress the magnetic order and charge density wave in the RV6Sn6 kagome family.

Coexistence of zigzag antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity in compressed NiPSe3

NiPSe3 is regarded as a bandwidth-controlled Mott insulator, distinct from the widely studied Mott insulating magnetic graphene MPSe3 (M = Mn and Fe) family. By employing high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction, we observe two structural transitions as a function of pressure. With the help of first-principles calculations, we discover the antiferromagnetic (AFM) moment directions of NiPSe3 switch from out-of-plane to in-plane and the honeycomb layers slide relative to each other at the first structural transition. The in-plane AFM order persists until the second structural transition, whereupon the two-dimensional (2D) structure assumes a more three-dimensional (3D) character. A bandwidth-controlled Mott insulator-metal transition (IMT) occurs between the two structural transitions at 8.0 GPa, concomitant with the emergence of superconductivity with 4.8 K. The superconductivity in NiPSe3 emerging in the 2D monoclinic phase coexists with the in-plane AFM order and continues into the 3D trigonal phase. Our electronic structure calculations reveal that the Mott IMT and superconductivity in NiPSe3 are both closely related to the enhanced Se2- 4p and Ni2+ 3d electronic hybridizations under pressure. From these results, we construct the temperature-pressure electronic phase diagram of NiPSe3, revealing rich physics and many similarities with copper oxide and iron-based superconductors.

Crystal and electronic structure of a quasi-two-dimensional semiconductor Mg$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$

We report the synthesis and characterization of a Si-based ternary semiconductor Mg$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$, which exhibits a quasi-two-dimensional structure, where the trigonal Mg$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$ layers are separated by Mg ions. Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the electronic structure. The experimentally determined direct band gap is 1.39 eV, consistent with the value of the density function theory calculations. Our results reveal that Mg$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ is a direct gap semiconductor with a relatively narrow gap, which is a potential candidate for infrared optoelectronic devices.

Exchange field enhanced upper critical field of the superconductivity in compressed antiferromagnetic EuTe2

We report high pressure studies on the C-type antiferromagnetic semiconductor EuTe2 up to 36.0 GPa. A structural transition from the I4/mcm to C2/m space group is identified at ~16 GPa. Superconductivity is discovered above ~5 GPa in both the I4/mcm and C2/m space groups. In the low-pressure phase (< 16 GPa), the antiferromagnetic transition temperature is enhanced with increasing pressure due to the enhanced magnetic exchange interactions. Magnetoresistance measurements indicate an interplay between the local moments of Eu2+ and the conduction electrons of Te 5p orbits. The upper critical field of the superconductivity is well above the Pauli limit. Across the structural transition to the high-pressure phase (> 16 GPa), EuTe2 becomes nonmagnetic and the superconducting transition temperature evolves smoothly with the upper critical field below the Pauli limit. Therefore, the high upper critical field of EuTe2 in the low-pressure phase is due to the exchange field compensation effect of the Eu magnetic order and the superconductivity in both structures may arise in the framework of the BCS theory.
