Reinforcement learning for vertical position control on the EXL-50U spherical tokamak

Vertical position control is essential for sustaining high-performance operation in spherical tokamaks, where increased plasma elongation introduces stringent requirements on fast and robust stabilization. This work presents an experimentally validated reinforcement-learning(RL)-based vertical position control framework for the EXL-50U spherical tokamak. A high-fidelity discharge-reconstructed simulation environment is developed by integrating physics-based plasma-circuit models with experimental equilibrium information, enabling systematic controller synthesis and sim-to-real evaluation. Within this framework, RL is benchmarked in simulation against operational proportional--integral--derivative (PID) and model-based linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controllers under identical plant dynamics, actuator constraints, and measurement imperfections.Simulation results show that RL achieves tracking accuracy comparable to PID with consistently lower vertical-stabilization coil effort, while lightweight integral compensation improves robustness against residual model--plant mismatch. The RL controller is subsequently deployed on EXL-50U for closed-loop experiments. Across more than ten discharges with RL takeover, stable vertical regulation is achieved within the controlled windows. For seven representative discharges, RL maintains millimetre-scale tracking accuracy comparable to the operational PID controller (MAE typically ~ 1-5 mm) while consistently reducing actuator effort. These results demonstrate the feasibility of learning-based plasma control on a real spherical tokamak and establish a practical pathway toward future fusion control systems.

Magnetically Tunable Chiral Phonon Polaritons with Magneto-optical Bound States in the Continuum

Chiral phonon-polaritonic states are of interest for handedness-dependent light-matter interactions, yet their realization and magnetic control remain challenging, while direct magneto-optical tunability of phonon-polaritonic media is limited. Here, we propose a hybrid platform in which an hBN phonon polariton couples to a chiral bound state in the continuum supported by a magneto-optical photonic crystal, enabling strong and selective photonic coupling. The interaction gives rise to pronounced mode splitting and the formation of hybrid states, and their modal composition is quantified by phonon-proportion analysis and described by a coupling theory. Importantly, the hybridization can be controlled by magnetic bias through the magneto-optical response of the photonic component, providing control over the modal composition and spectral response. In addition, the hybrid states exhibit handedness-selective absorption under circularly polarized excitation. This work offers a feasible route toward magnetically tunable chiral phonon-polaritonic devices and hybrid polaritonic functionalities

GeoNDC: A Queryable Neural Data Cube for Planetary-Scale Earth Observation

Satellite Earth observation has accumulated massive spatiotemporal archives essential for monitoring environmental change, yet these remain organized as discrete raster files, making them costly to store, transmit, and query. We present GeoNDC, a queryable neural data cube that encodes planetary-scale Earth observation data as a continuous spatiotemporal implicit neural field, enabling on-demand queries and continuous-time reconstruction without full decompression. Experiments on a 20-year global MODIS MCD43A4 reflectance record ($8016 \times 4008$ pixels, 7 bands, 915 temporal frames) show that the learned representation supports direct spatiotemporal queries on consumer hardware. On Sentinel-2 imagery (10 m), continuous temporal parameterization recovers cloud-free dynamics with high fidelity ($R^2 > 0.85$) under simulated 2-km cloud occlusion. On HiGLASS biophysical products (LAI and FPAR), GeoNDC attains near-perfect accuracy ($R^2 > 0.98$). The representation compresses the 20-year MODIS archive to 0.44\,GB -- approximately 95:1 relative to an optimized Int16 baseline -- with high spectral fidelity (mean $R^2 > 0.98$, mean RMSE $= 0.021$). These results suggest GeoNDC offers a unified AI-native representation for planetary-scale Earth observation, complementing raw archives with a compact, analysis-ready data layer integrating query, reconstruction, and compression in a single framework.

Topological Pseudospin Hall Effect and Multi-frequency Corner Modes in Kagome-based Lattices

Topological phases and modes, including pseudospin-Hall-selective edge transport and corner states, provide robust control of wave propagation and modal confinement in classical wave platforms. Under a tight-binding framework, we theoretically investigate two lattice designs derived from the kagome lattice. These extended kagome lattices support a series of localized modes, including pseudospin-Hall-like topological edge states and corner modes in different bandgaps and frequencies, which were not only achieved under lower lattice symmetries than Wu-Hu lattices, but also enable more degrees of freedom in topological and localized modes. By introducing two types of extended kagome lattices with different topological properties, multiple interesting phenomena, including newly emerged multiple groups of corner states, parametric tunable pseudospin Hall effect, and type-II corner states without long-range interactions, are found in theoretical models, which are possible and viable to achieve in artificial classical systems such as photonic, acoustic, or electrical circuits.

On the Optimization of Model Aggregation for Federated Learning at the Network Edge

The rapid increase in connected devices has signifi- cantly intensified the computational and communication demands on modern telecommunication networks. To address these chal- lenges, integrating advanced Machine Learning (ML) techniques like Federated Learning (FL) with emerging paradigms such as Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) and Software-Defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WANs) is crucial. This paper intro- duces online resource management strategies specifically designed for FL model aggregation, utilizing intermediate aggregation at edge nodes. Our analysis highlights the benefits of incorporating edge aggregators to reduce network link congestion and maximize the potential of edge computing nodes. However, the risk of network congestion persists. To mitigate this, we propose a novel aggregation approach that deploys an aggregator overlay network. We present an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) model and a heuristic algorithm to optimize the routing within this overlay network. Our solution demonstrates improved adapt- ability to network resource utilization, significantly reducing FL training round failure rates by up to 15% while also alleviating cloud link congestion.

Pair-Bid Auction Model for Optimized Network Slicing in 5G RAN

Network slicing is a key 5G technology that enables multiple virtual networks to share physical infrastructure, optimizing flexibility and resource allocation. This involves Mobile Network Operators (MNO), Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), and end users, where MNO leases network slices to MVNOs, and then provides customized services. This work considers end-to-end network slicing with a focus on fair sharing and financial-related power efficiency, modeled as a two level hierarchical combinatorial auction. At the upper level, an MNO auctions slices to competing MVNOs, while at the lower level, MVNOs allocate resources to end users through their own auctions. Dynamic user requests add complexity to the process. Our model optimizes resource allocation and revenue generation using a pair-bid mechanism and Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) pricing. The pair-bid approach enhances competition and efficiency, while VCG ensures truthful bidding based on marginal system impact. Simulations validate the model's effectiveness in resource distribution and financial performance, showing a 12.5% revenue improvement over the baseline.

Routing and Wavelength Assignment with Minimal Attack Radius for QKD Networks

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) can distribute keys with guaranteed security but remains susceptible to key exchange interruption due to physical-layer threats, such as high-power jamming attacks. To address this challenge, we first introduce a novel metric, namely Maximum Number of Affected Requests (maxNAR), to quantify the worst-case impact of a single physical-layer attack, and then we investigate a new problem of Routing and Wavelength Assignment with Minimal Attack Radius (RWA-MAR). We formulate the problem using an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) model and propose a scalable heuristic to efficiently minimize maxNAR. Our approach incorporates key caching through Quantum Key Pools (QKPs) to enhance resilience and optimize resource utilization. Moreover, we model the impact of different QKD network architectures, employing Optical Bypass (OB) for optical switching of quantum channels and Trusted Relay (TR) for secure key forwarding. Moreover, a tunable parameter is designed in the heuristic to guide the preference for OB or TR, offering enhanced adaptability and dynamic control in diverse network scenarios. Simulation results confirm that our method significantly outperforms the baseline in terms of security and scalability.

Fast Feedforward 3D Gaussian Splatting Compression

With 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) advancing real-time and high-fidelity rendering for novel view synthesis, storage requirements pose challenges for their widespread adoption. Although various compression techniques have been proposed, previous art suffers from a common limitation: for any existing 3DGS, per-scene optimization is needed to achieve compression, making the compression sluggish and slow. To address this issue, we introduce Fast Compression of 3D Gaussian Splatting (FCGS), an optimization-free model that can compress 3DGS representations rapidly in a single feed-forward pass, which significantly reduces compression time from minutes to seconds. To enhance compression efficiency, we propose a multi-path entropy module that assigns Gaussian attributes to different entropy constraint paths for balance between size and fidelity. We also carefully design both inter- and intra-Gaussian context models to remove redundancies among the unstructured Gaussian blobs. Overall, FCGS achieves a compression ratio of over 20X while maintaining fidelity, surpassing most per-scene SOTA optimization-based methods. Our code is available at: https://github.com/YihangChen-ee/FCGS.

PCGS: Progressive Compression of 3D Gaussian Splatting

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) achieves impressive rendering fidelity and speed for novel view synthesis. However, its substantial data size poses a significant challenge for practical applications. While many compression techniques have been proposed, they fail to efficiently utilize existing bitstreams in on-demand applications due to their lack of progressivity, leading to a waste of resource. To address this issue, we propose PCGS (Progressive Compression of 3D Gaussian Splatting), which adaptively controls both the quantity and quality of Gaussians (or anchors) to enable effective progressivity for on-demand applications. Specifically, for quantity, we introduce a progressive masking strategy that incrementally incorporates new anchors while refining existing ones to enhance fidelity. For quality, we propose a progressive quantization approach that gradually reduces quantization step sizes to achieve finer modeling of Gaussian attributes. Furthermore, to compact the incremental bitstreams, we leverage existing quantization results to refine probability prediction, improving entropy coding efficiency across progressive levels. Overall, PCGS achieves progressivity while maintaining compression performance comparable to SoTA non-progressive methods. Code available at: github.com/YihangChen-ee/PCGS.

Adaptive weighted approach for high-dimensional statistical learning and inference

We propose a new weighted average estimator for the high dimensional parameters under the distributed learning system, in which the weight assigned to each coordinate is precisely proportional to the inverse of the variance of the local estimates for that coordinate. This strategy empowers the new estimator to achieve a minimal mean squared error, comparable to the current state-of-the-art one-shot distributed learning methods. While at the same time, the new weighting approach maintains remarkably low communication costs, as each agent is required to transmit only two vectors to the central server. As a result, the newly proposed method achieves optimal statistical efficiency while significantly reducing communication overhead. We further demonstrate the effectiveness of the new estimator by investigating the error bound and the asymptotic properties of the estimation, as well as the numerical performance on some simulated examples and a real data analysis.

A Survey for Large Language Models in Biomedicine

Recent breakthroughs in large language models (LLMs) offer unprecedented natural language understanding and generation capabilities. However, existing surveys on LLMs in biomedicine often focus on specific applications or model architectures, lacking a comprehensive analysis that integrates the latest advancements across various biomedical domains. This review, based on an analysis of 484 publications sourced from databases including PubMed, Web of Science, and arXiv, provides an in-depth examination of the current landscape, applications, challenges, and prospects of LLMs in biomedicine, distinguishing itself by focusing on the practical implications of these models in real-world biomedical contexts. Firstly, we explore the capabilities of LLMs in zero-shot learning across a broad spectrum of biomedical tasks, including diagnostic assistance, drug discovery, and personalized medicine, among others, with insights drawn from 137 key studies. Then, we discuss adaptation strategies of LLMs, including fine-tuning methods for both uni-modal and multi-modal LLMs to enhance their performance in specialized biomedical contexts where zero-shot fails to achieve, such as medical question answering and efficient processing of biomedical literature. Finally, we discuss the challenges that LLMs face in the biomedicine domain including data privacy concerns, limited model interpretability, issues with dataset quality, and ethics due to the sensitive nature of biomedical data, the need for highly reliable model outputs, and the ethical implications of deploying AI in healthcare. To address these challenges, we also identify future research directions of LLM in biomedicine including federated learning methods to preserve data privacy and integrating explainable AI methodologies to enhance the transparency of LLMs.

Towards Real-World HDR Video Reconstruction: A Large-Scale Benchmark Dataset and A Two-Stage Alignment Network

As an important and practical way to obtain high dynamic range (HDR) video, HDR video reconstruction from sequences with alternating exposures is still less explored, mainly due to the lack of large-scale real-world datasets. Existing methods are mostly trained on synthetic datasets, which perform poorly in real scenes. In this work, to facilitate the development of real-world HDR video reconstruction, we present Real-HDRV, a large-scale real-world benchmark dataset for HDR video reconstruction, featuring various scenes, diverse motion patterns, and high-quality labels. Specifically, our dataset contains 500 LDRs-HDRs video pairs, comprising about 28,000 LDR frames and 4,000 HDR labels, covering daytime, nighttime, indoor, and outdoor scenes. To our best knowledge, our dataset is the largest real-world HDR video reconstruction dataset. Correspondingly, we propose an end-to-end network for HDR video reconstruction, where a novel two-stage strategy is designed to perform alignment sequentially. Specifically, the first stage performs global alignment with the adaptively estimated global offsets, reducing the difficulty of subsequent alignment. The second stage implicitly performs local alignment in a coarse-to-fine manner at the feature level using the adaptive separable convolution. Extensive experiments demonstrate that: (1) models trained on our dataset can achieve better performance on real scenes than those trained on synthetic datasets; (2) our method outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods. Our dataset is available at https://github.com/yungsyu99/Real-HDRV.

RFD-ECNet: Extreme Underwater Image Compression with Reference to Feature Dictionar

Thriving underwater applications demand efficient extreme compression technology to realize the transmission of underwater images (UWIs) in very narrow underwater bandwidth. However, existing image compression methods achieve inferior performance on UWIs because they do not consider the characteristics of UWIs: (1) Multifarious underwater styles of color shift and distance-dependent clarity, caused by the unique underwater physical imaging; (2) Massive redundancy between different UWIs, caused by the fact that different UWIs contain several common ocean objects, which have plenty of similarities in structures and semantics. To remove redundancy among UWIs, we first construct an exhaustive underwater multi-scale feature dictionary to provide coarse-to-fine reference features for UWI compression. Subsequently, an extreme UWI compression network with reference to the feature dictionary (RFD-ECNet) is creatively proposed, which utilizes feature match and reference feature variant to significantly remove redundancy among UWIs. To align the multifarious underwater styles and improve the accuracy of feature match, an underwater style normalized block (USNB) is proposed, which utilizes underwater physical priors extracted from the underwater physical imaging model to normalize the underwater styles of dictionary features toward the input. Moreover, a reference feature variant module (RFVM) is designed to adaptively morph the reference features, improving the similarity between the reference and input features. Experimental results on four UWI datasets show that our RFD-ECNet is the first work that achieves a significant BD-rate saving of 31% over the most advanced VVC.

An information-theoretic learning model based on importance sampling

A crucial assumption underlying the most current theory of machine learning is that the training distribution is identical to the test distribution. However, this assumption may not hold in some real-world applications. In this paper, we develop a learning model based on principles of information theory by minimizing the worst-case loss at prescribed levels of uncertainty. We reformulate the empirical estimation of the risk functional and the distribution deviation constraint based on the importance sampling method. The objective of the proposed approach is to minimize the loss under maximum degradation and hence the resulting problem is a minimax problem which can be converted to an unconstrained minimum problem using the Lagrange method with the Lagrange multiplier $T$. We reveal that the minimization of the objective function under logarithmic transformation is equivalent to the minimization of the p-norm loss with $p=\frac{1}{T}$. We applied the proposed model to the face verification task on Racial Faces in the Wild datasets and showed that the proposed model performs better under large distribution deviations.

Ultra-narrowband terahertz circular dichroism driven by planar metasurface supporting chiral quasi bound states in continuum

Terahertz (THz) chirality pursues customizable manipulation from narrowband to broadband. While conventional THz chirality is restricted by non-negligible linewidth and unable to handle narrowband well. Recently, the concept "quasi bound states in continuum" (quasi-BIC) is introduced to optics resonance system whose the quality factor can be extremely high with the ultra-low radiative loss, thus providing a conceptual feasibility for wave control with ultra-narrow linewidth. Herein, we construct quasi-BIC in a planar all-silicon THz metasurface with in-plane C2 and mirror symmetries breaking. Such system not only exposes the symmetry-protected BIC, but also exposes the parameter-tuned BIC assigned to single resonance type. An extremely narrow linewidth (below 0.06 GHz) with high quality factor (104 level) is obtained at quasi-BIC frequency, which achieves the ultra-narrowband THz chirality.

Towards a Conversational Measure of Trust

The increasingly collaborative decision-making process between humans and agents demands a comprehensive, continuous, and unobtrusive measure of trust in agents. The gold standard format for measuring trust, a Likert-style survey, suffers from major limitations in dynamic human-agent interactions. We proposed a new approach to evaluate trust in a nondirective and relational conversation. The term nondirective refers to abstract word selections in open-ended prompts, which can probe respondents to freely describe their attitudes. The term relational refers to interactive conversations where respondents can clarify their responses in followup questions. We propose a systematic process for generating nondirective trust-based prompts by using text analysis from previously validated trust scales. This nondirective and relational approach provides a complementary trust measurement, which can unobtrusively elicit rich and dynamic information on situational trust throughout a human-agent interaction.

Experimental observation of topological exciton-polaritons in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers

The rise of quantum science and technologies motivates photonics research to seek new platforms with strong light-matter interactions to facilitate quantum behaviors at moderate light intensities. One promising platform to reach such strong light-matter interacting regimes is offered by polaritonic metasurfaces, which represent ultrathin artificial media structured on nano-scale and designed to support polaritons - half-light half-matter quasiparticles. Topological polaritons, or 'topolaritons', offer an ideal platform in this context, with unique properties stemming from topological phases of light strongly coupled with matter. Here we explore polaritonic metasurfaces based on 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) supporting in-plane polarized exciton resonances as a promising platform for topological polaritonics. We enable a spin-Hall topolaritonic phase by strongly coupling valley polarized in-plane excitons in a TMD monolayer with a suitably engineered all-dielectric topological photonic metasurface. We first show that the strong coupling between topological photonic bands supported by the metasurface and excitonic bands in MoSe2 yields an effective phase winding and transition to a topolaritonic spin-Hall state. We then experimentally realize this phenomenon and confirm the presence of one-way spin-polarized edge topolaritons. Combined with the valley polarization in a MoSe2 monolayer, the proposed system enables a new approach to engage the photonic angular momentum and valley degree of freedom in TMDs, offering a promising platform for photonic/solid-state interfaces for valleytronics and spintronics.
