A guided residual search for nonlinear state-space identification

Identifying the parameters of nonlinear state-space models from input-output data typically requires solving a highly non-convex optimization problem, which is prone to slow convergence and suboptimal local solutions. This work improves the reliability and efficiency of the estimation process by decomposing the overall optimization problem into a sequence of tractable subproblems. Starting from a linear baseline model, nonlinear residual dynamics are first estimated using a guided residual search (GRS) and subsequently refined through multiple-shooting optimization. Experiments on two benchmarks show competitive performance with state-of-the-art black-box methods and improved convergence over naive initialization.

A sliding-window approach for latent restoring force modeling

Restoring force surface (RFS) methods offer an attractive nonparametric framework for identifying nonlinear restoring forces directly from data, but their reliance on complete kinematic measurements at each degree of freedom limits scalability to multidimensional systems. The aim of this paper is to overcome these measurement limitations by proposing an identification framework with relaxed sensing requirements that exploits periodic multisine excitation. Starting from an initial linear model, a sliding-window feedback approach reconstructs latent states and nonlinear restoring forces nonparametrically, enabling identification of the nonlinear component through linear-in-parameters regression instead of highly non-convex optimization. Validation on synthetic and experimental datasets demonstrates high simulation accuracy and reliable recovery of physical parameters under partial sensing and noisy conditions.

Inference and Learning of Nonlinear LFR State-Space Models

Estimating the parameters of nonlinear block-oriented state-space models from input-output data typically involves solving a highly non-convex optimization problem, which is prone to poor local minima and slow convergence. This paper presents a computationally efficient initialization method for nonlinear linear fractional representation (NL-LFR) models using periodic data. By first inferring the latent signals and subsequently estimating the model parameters, the approach generates initial estimates for use in a later nonlinear optimization step. The proposed method shows robustness against poor local minima, and achieves a twofold error reduction compared to the state-of-the-art on a challenging benchmark dataset.

Feedback linearisation of mechanical systems using data-driven models

Linearising the dynamics of nonlinear mechanical systems is an important and open research area. A common approach is feedback linearisation, which is a nonlinear control method that transforms the input-output response of a nonlinear system into an equivalent linear one. The main problem with feedback linearisation is that it requires an accurate first-principles model of the system, which are typically hard to obtain. In this paper, we design an alternative control approach that exploits data-driven models to linearise the input-output response of nonlinear mechanical systems. Specifically, a model-based reference tracking architecture is developed for nonlinear feedback systems with output nonlinearities. The overall methodology shows a high degree of performance combined with significant robustness against imperfect modelling and extrapolation. These findings are demonstrated using large set of synthetic experiments conducted on a asymmetric Duffing oscillator and using an experimental prototype of a high-precision motion system.
