A Generally Covariant Model of Spacetime as a 4-Brane in 4+1 Flat Dimensions

We construct a simple toy model of a closed FLRW spacetime by starting from a flat five dimensional scalar field space. The action contains no curvature terms. A string-like potential is used for the field space. The model is fully covariant and the spacetime metric is uniquely determined from the dynamical equations of the metric tensor. An SO(4) invariant ansatz for the scalar fields is shown to be sufficient to build the FLRW cosmology.

An analytical model of depth-dose distributions for carbon-ion beams

Improving effective treatment plans in carbon ion therapy, especially for targeting radioresistant tumors located in deep seated regions while sparing normal tissues, depends on a precise and computationally efficient dose calculation model. Although dose calculations are mostly performed using Monte Carlo simulations, the large amount of computational effort required for these simulations hinders their use in clinical practice. To address this gap, we propose, for the first time in the literature, an analytical model for the depth dose distribution of carbon ion beams by adapting and extending Bortfeld proton dose model. The Bortfeld model was modified and expanded by introducing additional terms and parameters to account for the energy deposition and fragmentation effects characteristic of carbon ions. Our model was implemented in MATLAB software to calculate depth-dose distributions of carbon ion beams across the clinical energy range of 100-430 MeV/u. The calculated results for carbon ion energies of 280 MeV/u and 430 MeV/u were compared with Monte Carlo simulation results from TOPAS to assess the precision of our model. It is observed that the results of the proposed model are in good agreement with those of several analytical and experimental studies for clinical carbon ion beams within the therapeutic energy range of 100-400 MeV/u. At 280 MeV/u, the analytical model result exhibited strong consistency with the depth dose curve produced by TOPAS Monte Carlo simulations. However, noticeable discrepancies appeared at higher energies, such as 430 MeV/u, particularly in the Bragg peak height and the dose falloff. In the clinically useful energy range, our model could potentially be an effective tool in carbon ion therapy as an alternative to complex Monte Carlo simulations. It will enable fast dose assessment with accuracy and in real time, thus improving workflow efficiency.

The Exterior Calculus of Quadratic Gravity

The metric tensor field equations for the general quadratic curvature gravity in four spacetime dimensions are derived by making use of the algebra of the exterior forms defined on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds and the identities satisfied by the Riemann curvature tensor. The linearized metric field equations are formulated in terms of perturbation 1-form fields.

Thermodynamical Properties of Bosons and Fermions for a Lattice Motivated Dispersion Relationship

In this paper we calculate the basic thermodynamical quantities for a system of bosonic simple harmonic oscillators (BSHOs) and the corresponding system of fermionic simple harmonic oscillators (FSHOs) using a dispersion relationship similar to cases in general relativity and condensed matter physics. In the FSHO we see negative temperatures in both cases we obtain finally a system of oscillators with only one effective frequency of vibration. Also we see that pressure is less than zero for T < Tc where Tc is a critical temperature for bosons.

A Cosmological Exact Solution of Complex Jordan-Brans-Dicke Theory and its Phenomenological Implications

When Brans-Dicke Theory is formulated in terms of the Jordan scalar field ϕ, dark energy is related to the mass of this field. We show that if ϕis taken to be a complex scalar field then an exact solution of the vacuum equations shows that Friedmann equation possesses a term, proportional to the inverse sixth power of the scale factor, as well as a constant term. Possible interpretations and phenomenological implications of this result are discussed.

Factorization Method for d-Dimensional Isotropic Harmonic Oscillator and the Generalized Laguerre Polynomials

The factorization method of Infeld and Hull is applied to the radial Schrödinger equation for $d$-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator and various ladder operators are defined. The radial energy eigenstates are expressed in terms of the generalized Laguerre polynomials and their properties are shown to follow from the expressions involving the ladder operators. In the same way as the harmonic oscillator we also obtain the bound energy eigenstates of the Morse oscillator.
