Inversion symmetry breaking in bilayer multi-orbital Hubbard model with impurity approximation

We investigated the Cu/Ni-O$_2$ bilayer multi-orbital Hubbard model with Cu/Ni impurity approximation embedded in the O lattice by incorporating the 3d$^{8}$ multiplet structure coupled to a full O-2p band. For this simplified model of describing the local electronic structure of hole doped homo-bilayer Cu(Ni)O$_2$-Cu(Ni)O$_2$ and hetero-bilayer CuO$_2$-NiO$_2$, we demonstrate that the homo-bilayer system hosts rich phase diagram with inversion symmetry breaking between two layers at strong enough interlayer hybridization, especially the coexistence of two-hole singlet and triplet states in opposite layers. Besides, we show that the interlayer hybridization in hetero-bilayer systems destabilizes the Zhang-Rice singlets or 3d$^{8}$ triplets within each layer via charge transfer between layers. The relevance of these electronic redistribution to the bilayer or interface systems of cuprates and/or nickelates are discussed.

Shifting superconducting dome of two-dimensional hole-doped Hubbard model by a dry Fermi sea: enhanced d-wave pairing in the overdoped regime

Motivated by the presence of an extremely small electron pocket in the electronic band structure of infinite-layer (IL) nickelate superconductors, we systematically explore the superconducting (SC) properties of a two-dimensional Hubbard model influenced by an additional conduction band with small occupancy (dry Fermi sea). Our dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo calculations demonstrated the unusual impact of this additional dry metallic layer, which shifts the SC dome of the correlated Hubbard layer towards the overdoped regime, namely the $d$-wave SC can be enhanced (suppressed) in the overdoped (underdoped) regime. Simultaneously, the pseudogap (PG) crossover line shifts to the same higher doping regime as well. Our analysis revealed the interplay of the effective pairing interaction, pair-field susceptibility, and antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation in the underlying non-monotonic physics. We postulate on the physical picture of SC dome shift in terms of the Kondo-type electron-hole binding in the case of a dry additional conduction band. Our investigation provided valuable new insights on tuning the SC properties via external dry bands.

Stabilization of singlet hole-doped state in infinite-layer nickelate superconductors

Motivated by the recent X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments, we use a detailed impurity model to explore the nature of the parent compound and hole doped states of (La, Nd, Pr)NiO$_2$ by including the crystal field splitting, the Ni-$3d$ multiplet structure, and the hybridization between Ni-$3d$, O-$2p$, and Nd-$5d$ orbitals. For simplicity and stimulated by the recent electronic structure calculations, the latter are formally replaced with symmetric orbitals centered at the missing O sites in the Nd layer, forming a two-dimensional (2D) band strongly hybridizing with the Ni-$3d^9_{z^2}$ state. This hybridization pushes the main part of the $3d^9_{z^2}$ spectral function up in energy by several eV and stabilizes the singlet with considerable $d^9_{z^2}$ and other configurational components. For the parent compound, we find that states of Ni-$3d^9_{z^2}$ character spread over a large energy range in the spectra, and cannot and should not be represented by a single orbital energy, as suggested in other approximations. This is qualitatively consistent with the RIXS measurements showing a broad distribution of the Ni-$3d^9_{z^2}$ hole state, although the shape of the Ni-$3d^9_{z^2}$ related structure is much more complicated requiring reinterpretations of the RIXS data. For the hole-doped systems, we show that adding these additional ingredients can still result in the lowest-energy hole doped state having a singlet character.

Characterizing the superconducting instability in a two-orbital $d$-$s$ model: insights to infinite-layer nickelate superconductors

Motivated by the recent realization of the infinite-layer nickelate superconductivity (SC), we quantitatively investigate a two-orbital $d$-$s$ model by dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Focusing on the impact of inter-orbital hybridization on the superconducting properties, our simulations indicate that the $d$-$s$ hybridization strength has a decisive role in the suppression of the $d$-wave pairing in the doping regime relevant to infinite-layer nickelates. Although we confirm on the single-orbital description at weak hybridization, at relatively large hybridization, there exists a constructive effect of the non-negligibly finite $s$ orbital occupancy on inhibiting the suppression of the superconductivity. More strikingly, there exists a possible SC enhancement at large enough Hubbard interaction via large $d$-$s$ hybridization. We further provide some insights on the relevance of $d$-$s$ model to infinite-layer nickelates.

Enhancing $d$-wave superconductivity with nearest-neighbor attraction of extended Hubbard model

Motivated by the recent discovery of the anomalously nearest-neighbor attraction arising from the electron-phonon coupling, we quantitatively investigate the enhancing effects of this additional attractive channel on the $d$-wave SC based on dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo calculations of doped two-dimensional extended Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor attraction $-V$. Focusing on the range of $0<-V/t \le 2$, our simulations indicate that the dynamics of $d$-wave projected pairing interaction is attractive at all frequencies and increases with $|V|$. Moreover, turning on $-V$ attraction enhances the $(π,π)$ spin fluctuations but only enhances (suppresses) the charge fluctuations for small (large) momentum transfer. Thus, at $V/t=-1$ relevant to ``holon folding branch'', the charge fluctuations are insufficient to compete with $d$-wave pairing interaction strengthened by enhanced spin fluctuations. Our work suggest the underlying rich interplay between the spin and charge fluctuations in giving rise to the superconducting properties.

Polaron and bipolaron tendencies in a semiclassical model for hole-doped bismuthates

Bismuth perovskites ABiO$_3$ (A = Sr, Ba) host a variety of peculiar phenomena including bond-disproportionated insulating phases and high-temperature superconductivity upon hole doping. While the mechanisms underlying these phenomena are still debated, off-diagonal electron-phonon ($e$-ph) coupling originating from the modulation of the orbital overlaps has emerged as a promising candidate. Here, we employ classical Monte Carlo simulations to study a semiclassical three-orbital model with off-diagonal $e$-ph interactions. We demonstrate the existence of a (bi)polaron correlations that persists in the model at high temperatures and for hole doping away from the bond-disproportionated insulating phase. Using a spatiotemporal regression analysis between various local quantities and the lattice degrees of freedom, we also identify the similarity between heating- and doping-induced melting of a bond-disproportionated insulator at a microscopic level. Our results imply that (bi)polaron physics can be a unifying concept that helps us understand the rich bismuth perovskite phase diagram.

Enhanced tendency of $d$-wave pairing and antiferromagnetism in doped staggered periodic Anderson model

Whether or not a physical property can be enhanced in an inhomogeneous system compared with its homogeneous counterpart is an intriguing fundamental question. We provide a concrete example with positive answer by uncovering a remarkable enhancement of both antiferromagnetic (AF) structure factor and $d$-wave pairing tendency in the doped staggered periodic Anderson model (PAM) with two alternating inequivalent local moments. The common thread of these enhancement is found to originate from the generic "self-averaging" effect and non-monotonic dependence of the corresponding physical quantity in homogeneous PAM. More strikingly, we provided evidence of the coexistence of these two enhancement via a tentative phase diagram. Our findings may imply the plausible generalization of enhancing physical properties in generic inhomogeneous systems.

Antiferromagnetism mediated by heavy electrons: singlet shielding vs "high-order" RKKY

Can the antiferromagnetic (AF) order be induced via the local moments' hybridization with the heavy electrons instead of conduction electrons? We address this intriguingly fundamental question via a prototypical model to describe the interplay between local moments and heavy electrons. We discover that the AF order can be mediated via the heavy electrons through the mechanism of "high-order" Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. Moreover, the induced AF order can coexist with its metallicity in a finite regime of the phase diagram, which competes with and ultimately destroys the AF order concurrently with the breakdown of heavy electrons. The potential relevance to the heavy fermion compound Ce$_3$(Pt/Pd)In$_{11}$ is discussed.

Enhanced antiferromagnetic ordering tendency in staggered periodic Anderson model

Heavy fermion compounds consisting of two or more inequivalent local moment sites per unit cell have been a promising platform of investigating the interplay between distinct Kondo screenings that is absent in the conventional systems containing only one rare-earth ion per unit cell. We report a remarkable enhancement of the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering tendency in the staggered periodic Anderson model (PAM) with two alternating inequivalent local moments if their hybridization strengths reside in the Kondo singlet and antiferromagnetic insulator regime separately of the phase diagram of homogeneous PAM. Our results uncover the rich physics induced by the interplay of multiple energy scales in the staggered PAM and furthermore implies the ubiquitous existence of the enhancement of physical quantities in general inhomogeneous systems.

The critical nature of the Ni spin state in doped NdNiO$_2$

Superconductivity with $T_c \approx 15K$ was recently found in doped NdNiO$_2$. The Ni$^{1+}$O$_2$ layers are expected to be Mott insulators so hole doping should produce Ni$^{2+}$ with $S=1$, incompatible with robust superconductivity. We show that the NiO$_2$ layers fall inside a ``critical'' region where the large $pd$ hybridization favors a singlet $^1\!A_1$ hole-doped state like in CuO$_2$. However, we find that the superexchange is about one order smaller than in cuprates, thus a magnon ``glue'' is very unlikely and another mechanism needs to be found.

Tunable magnetism of a hexagonal Anderson droplet on the triangular lattice

Motivated by recent progress on quantum engineered Kondo lattices, we numerically investigated the local magnetic properties of a hexagonal Anderson droplet consisting of multiple rings of magnetic atoms periodically arrayed on a triangular lattice. We demonstrated the tunability of the magnetic properties via their evolution with the droplet geometry for two types of systems with distinct local orbital occupancy profile. We found that the local susceptibility of the droplet center of some types of droplets can be remarkably enhanced in contrast to the conventionally rapid decrease due to spin correlations of surrounding droplet rings. The tunability of the magnetic properties is attributed to the charge redistribution with varying the droplet geometry enforced by the confined lattice with open boundary. Our simulations complements the exploration of the novel artificial tunability of engineered lattice systems.

Relevance of Cu-3d multiplet structure in models of high Tc cuprates

We revisit the problem of the spectra of two holes in a CuO$_{2}$ layer, modeled as a Cu-d$^{8}$ impurity with full multiplet structure coupled to a full O-2p band as an approximation to the local electronic structure of a hole doped cuprate. Unlike previous studies that treated the O band as a featureless bath, we describe it with a realistic tight binding model. While our results are in qualitative agreement with previous work, we find considerable quantitative changes when using the proper O-2p band structure. We also find (i) that only the ligand O-2p orbitals play an essential role, within this impurity model; (ii) that the three-orbital Emery model provides an accurate description for the subspace with $^{1}\!A_1$ symmetry, which includes the ground-state in the relevant region of the phase diagram; (iii) that this ground-state has only $\sim 50\%$ overlap with a Zhang-Rice singlet; (iv) that there are other low-energy states, in subspaces with different symmetries, that are absent from the three-orbital Emery model and its one-band descendants. These states play an important role in describing the elementary excitations of doped cuprates.

Interaction-driven Band-insulator--to--Metal transition in bilayer ionic Hubbard model

The interaction-driven insulator-to-metal transition has been reported in the ionic Hubbard model (IHM) for moderate interaction $U$, while its metallic phase only occupies a narrow region in the phase diagram. To explore the enlargement of the metallic regime, we extend the ionic Hubbard model to two coupled layers and study the interplay of interlayer hybridization $V$ and two types of intralayer staggered potentials $Δ$: one with the same (in-phase) and the other with a $π$-phase shift (anti-phase) potential between layers. Our determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations at lowest accessible temperatures demonstrate that the interaction-driven metallic phase between Mott and band insulators expands in the $Δ-V$ phase diagram of bilayer IHM only for in-phase ionic potentials; while anti-phase potential always induces an insulator with charge density order. This implies possible further extension of the ionic Hubbard model from the bilayer case here to realistic three-dimensional model.

Universal Knight shift anomaly in the Periodic Anderson model

We report a Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo investigation which quantifies the behavior of the susceptibility and the entropy in the framework of the periodic Anderson model (PAM), focussing on the evolution with different degree of conduction electron (c) -local moment (f) hybridization. These results capture the behavior observed in several experiments, including the universal behavior of the NMR Knight shift anomaly below the crossover temperature, $T^{\ast}$. We find that $T^{\ast}$ is a measure of the onset of c-f correlations and grows with increasing hybridization. These results suggest that the NMR Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements in non-Fermi liquid materials are strongly influenced by temperature-dependent hybridization processes. Our results provide a microscopic basis for the phenomenological two-fluid model of Kondo lattice behavior, and its evolution with pressure and temperature.

Interplay of Superconductivity and Spin-Dependent Disorder

The finite temperature phase diagram for the 2D attractive fermion Hubbard model with spin-dependent disorder is considered within Bogoliubov-de Gennes mean field theory. Three types of disorder are studied. In the first, only one species is coupled to a random site energy; in the second, the two species both move in random site energy landscapes which are of the same amplitude, but different realizations; and finally, in the third, the disorder is in the hopping rather than the site energy. For all three cases we find that, unlike the case of spin-symmetric randomness, where the energy gap and average order parameter do not vanish as the disorder strength increases, a critical disorder strength exists separating distinct phases. In fact, the energy gap and the average order parameter vanish at distinct transitions, $V_{c}^{\rm gap}$ and $V_{c}^{\rm op}$, allowing for a gapless superconducting (gSC) phase. The gSC phase becomes smaller with increasing temperature, until it vanishes at a temperature $T^{\ast}$.
