Degrees of freedom of $f(T)$ gravity

We investigate the Hamiltonian formulation of $f(T)$ gravity and find that there are five degrees of freedom. The six first class constraints corresponding to the local Lorentz transformation in Teleparallel gravity become second class constraints in $f(T)$ gravity, which leads to the appearance of three extra degrees of freedom and the violation of the local Lorentz invariance in $f(T)$ gravity. In general, there are $D-1$ extra degrees of freedom for $f(T)$ gravity in $D$ dimensions, and this implies that the extra degrees of freedom correspond to one massive vector field or one massless vector field with one scalar field.

Probing Cosmic Acceleration by Using the SNLS3 SNIa Dataset

We probe the cosmic acceleration by using the recently released SNLS3 sample of 472 type Ia supernovae. Combining this type Ia supernovae dataset with the cosmic microwave background anisotropy data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 7-yr observations, the baryon acoustic oscillation results from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 7, and the Hubble constant measurement from the Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope, we measure the dark energy equation of state $w$ and the deceleration parameter $q$ as functions of redshift by using the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parametrization. Our result is consistent with a cosmological constant at 1$σ$ confidence level, without evidence for the recent slowing down of the cosmic acceleration. Furthermore, we consider three binned parametrizations ($w$ is piecewise constant in redshift $z$) based on different binning methods. The similar results are obtained, i.e., the $Λ$CDM model is still nicely compatible with current observations.

Observational evidence for AGNs feedback at parsec scale

In a hot accretion flow, the radiation from the innermost region of the flow propagates outward and heats the electrons at large radii via Compton scattering. It has been shown in previous works that if the radiation is strong enough, $L\ga 2%L_{\rm Edd}$, the electrons at the Bondi radius ($r_B\sim 10^5 r_s$) will be heated to be above the virial temperature thus the accretion will be stopped. The accretion will recover after the gas cools down. This results in the oscillation of the black hole activity. In this paper we show that this mechanism is the origin of the intermittent activity of some compact young radio sources. Such intermittency is required to explain the population of these sources. We calculate the timescales of the black hole oscillation and find that the durations of active and inactive phases are $3\times 10^4 (0.1/α)(M/10^8\msun) (L/2%L_{\rm Edd})^{-1/2} {\rm yr}$ and $10^5(α/0.1)(M/10^8\msun) {\rm yr}$, respectively, consistent with those required to explain observations. Such kind of feedback occurring at parsec scale should be common in low-luminosity AGNs and should be considered when we consider their matter and energy output.

Holographic de Sitter Universe

We propose to embed de Sitter space into five dimensional anti-de Sitter space to compute some physical quantities of interest, using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The static de Sitter can be considered as the conformal structure of the boundary of the hyperbolic AdS5 with a horizon, thus energy as well as entropy can be computed. The global dS can be embedded into a half-global AdS5, and the dS entropy can be regarded as entanglement entropy in this case. Finally, the inflationary dS can also be regarded as the boundary of AdS5, and this can be extended to include general cosmology with a positive cosmological constant, however at the price of introducing a naked null singularity in the bulk unless the cosmology is pure de Sitter space.

f(R) Gravity and Maxwell Equations from the Holographic Principle

Extending the holographic program of [1], we derive f(R) gravity and the Maxwell equations from the holographic principle, using time-like holographic screen. We find that to derive the Einstein equations and f(R) gravity in a natural holographic approach, the quasi-static condition is necessary. We also find the surface stress tensor and the surface electric current, surface magnetic current on the holographic screen for f(R) gravity and Maxwell's theory, respectively.

Exploring the Latest Union2 SNIa Dataset by Using Model-Independent Parametrization Methods

We explore the cosmological consequences of the recently released Union2 sample of 557 Type Ia supernovae (SNIa). Combining this latest SNIa dataset with the Cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 7 year (WMAP7) observations and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) results from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7), we measure the dark energy density function $f(z)\equiv ρ_{de}(z)/ρ_{de}(0)$ as a free function of redshift. Two model-independent parametrization methods (the binned parametrization and the polynomial interpolation parametrization) are used in this paper. By using the $χ^2$ statistic and the Bayesian information criterion, we find that the current observational data are still too limited to distinguish which parametrization method is better, and a simple model has advantage in fitting observational data than a complicated model. Moreover, it is found that all these parametrizations demonstrate that the Union2 dataset is still consistent with a cosmological constant at 1$σ$ confidence level. Therefore, the Union2 dataset is different from the Constitution SNIa dataset, which more favors a dynamical dark energy.

A New Entropic Force Scenario and Holographic Thermodynamics

We propose a new holographic program of gravity in which we introduce a surface stress tensor. Our proposal differs from Verlinde's in several aspects. First, we use an open or a closed screen, a temperature is not necessary but a surface energy density and pressure are introduced. The surface stress tensor is proportional to the extrinsic curvature. The energy we use is Brown-York energy and the equipartiton theorem is violated by a non-vanishing surface pressure. We discuss holographic thermodynamics of a gas of weak gravity and find a chemical potential, and show that Verlinde's program does not lead to a reasonable thermodynamics. The holographic entropy is similar to the Bekenstein entropy bound.

Revisit of cosmic age problem

We investigate the cosmic age problem associated with 9 extremely old globular clusters in M31 galaxy and 1 very old high-$z$ quasar APM 08279 + 5255 at $z=3.91$. These 9 globular clusters have not been used to study the cosmic age problem in the previous literature. By evaluating the age of the universe in the $Λ$CDM model with the observational constraints from the SNIa, the BAO, the CMB, and the independent $H_0$ measurements, we find that the existence of 5 globular clusters and 1 high-$z$ quasar are in tension (over 2$σ$ confidence level) with the current cosmological observations. So if the age estimates of these objects are correct, the cosmic age puzzle still remains in the standard cosmology. Moreover, we extend our investigations to the cases of the interacting dark energy models. It is found that although the introduction of the interaction between dark sectors can give a larger cosmic age, the interacting dark energy models still have difficulty to pass the cosmic age test.

On maximal regularity and semivariation of $α$-times resolvent families

Let $1< α<2$ and $A$ be the generator of an $α$-times resolvent family $\{S_α(t)\}_{t \ge 0}$ on a Banach space $X$. It is shown that the fractional Cauchy problem ${\bf D}_t^αu(t) = Au(t)+f(t)$, $t \in [0,r]$; $u(0), u'(0) \in D(A)$ has maximal regularity on $C([0,r];X)$ if and only if $S_α(\cdot)$ is of bounded semivariation on $[0,r]$.

On fractional powers of generators of fractional resolvent families

We show that if $-A$ generates a bounded $α$-times resolvent family for some $α\in (0,2]$, then $-A^β$ generates an analytic $γ$-times resolvent family for $β\in(0,\frac{2π-πγ}{2π-πα})$ and $γ\in (0,2)$. And a generalized subordination principle is derived. In particular, if $-A$ generates a bounded $α$-times resolvent family for some $α\in (1,2]$, then $-A^{1/α}$ generates an analytic $C_0$-semigroup. Such relations are applied to study the solutions of Cauchy problems of fractional order and first order.

Cosmic age test in inhomogeneous cosmological models mimicking $Λ$CDM on the light cone

The possibility of reconstructing a spherically symmetric inhomogeneous Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model with $Λ$CDM observations has drawn a lot of attention. Recently, a LTB model having the same luminosity-distance and light-cone mass density as the $Λ$CDM model was reconstructed. We calculate the cosmic age at our position in this model, and get the age $t_{LTB}<11.7$Gyr in 2$σ$ confidence level from the Seven-Year WMAP observations. This result is inconsistent with some Milky Way observations.

Comparison of dark energy models: A perspective from the latest observational data

In this paper, we compare some popular dark energy models under the assumption of a flat universe by using the latest observational data including the type Ia supernovae Constitution compilation, the baryon acoustic oscillation measurement from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the cosmic microwave background measurement given by the seven-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe observations and the determination of $H_0$ from the Hubble Space Telescope. Model comparison statistics such as the Bayesian and Akaike information criteria are applied to assess the worth of the models. These statistics favor models that give a good fit with fewer parameters. Based on this analysis, we find that the simplest cosmological constant model that has only one free parameter is still preferred by the current data. For other dynamical dark energy models, we find that some of them, such as the $α$ dark energy, constant $w$, generalized Chaplygin gas, Chevalliear-Polarski-Linder parametrization, and holographic dark energy models, can provide good fits to the current data, and three of them, namely, the Ricci dark energy, agegraphic dark energy, and Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati models, are clearly disfavored by the data.

A No-go Theorem Prohibiting Inflation in the Entropic Force Scenario

We show that to accommodate inflation in the entropic force scenario of Verlinde, it is necessary to introduce a negative temperature on a holographic screen, this will introduce several puzzles such as energy non-conservation. If one tries to modify the derivation of the Einstein equations to avoid a negative temperature, we prove that it is impossible to find a proper new definition of temperature to derive the Einstein equations.

Revisit of Tension in Recent SNIa Datasets

Although today there are many observational methods, Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) is still one of the most powerful tools to probe the mysterious dark energy (DE). The most recent SNIa datasets are the 307 SNIa "Union" dataset \cite{kow08} and the 397 SNIa "Constitution" dataset \cite{hic09}. In a recent work \cite{wei10}, Wei pointed out that both Union and Constitution datasets are in tension with the observations of cosmic microwave background (CMB) and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), and suggested that two truncated versions of Union and Constitution datasets, namely "UnionT" and "ConstitutionT", should be used to constrain various DE models. But in \cite{wei10}, only the $Λ$CDM model is used to select the outliers from the Union and the Constitution dataset. In principle, since different DE models may select different outliers, the truncation procedure should be performed for each different DE model. In the present work, by performing the truncation procedure of \cite{wei10} for 10 different models, we demonstrate that the impact of different models is negligible, and the approach adopted in \cite{wei10} is valid. Moreover, by using the 4 SNIa datasets mentioned above, as well as the observations of CMB and BAO, we perform best-fit analysis on the 10 models. It is found that: (1) For each DE model, the truncated SNIa datasets not only greatly reduce $χ_{min}^{2}$ and $χ_{min}^{2}/dof$, but also remove the tension between SNIa data and other cosmological observations. (2) The CMB data is very helpful to break the degeneracy among different parameters, and plays a very important role in distinguishing different DE models. (3) The current observational data are still too limited to distinguish all DE models.

More studies on Metamaterials Mimicking de Sitter space

We estimate the dominating frequencies contributing to the Casimir energy in a cavity of metamaterials mimicking de Sitter space, by solving the eigenvalue problem of Maxwell equations. It turns out the dominating frequencies are the inverse of the size of the cavity, and the degeneracy of these frequencies also explains our previous result on the unusually large Casimir energy. Our result suggests that carrying out the experiment in laboratory is possible theoretically.
