Intrinsic mechanism for spectral evolution in single-frequency Raman fiber amplifier

In this work, the spectral evolution properties in single-frequency Raman fiber amplifier (RFA) with different pump manners are analyzed theoretically for the first time based on the gain dynamics. The analysis of gain dynamics reveals that the walk-off effect in counter-pumped manner produces a natural low-pass filter in single-frequency RFA. When applying rare-earth doped fiber lasers as the pump source, the strong temporal fluctuations in the pump source lead to spectral broadening in co-pumped manner, while the natural low-pass filter in countered-pumped case can still ensure single-frequency operation. Furthermore, applying temporal stable laser, such as single-frequency fiber laser or narrow band fiber laser spectral broadened by phase modulation technique, as the pump source would be superior for high-performance single-frequency RFA for the both two pump manners.

Defect detection for patterned fabric images based on GHOG and low-rank decomposition

In order to accurately detect defects in patterned fabric images, a novel detection algorithm based on Gabor-HOG (GHOG) and low-rank decomposition is proposed in this paper. Defect-free pattern fabric images have the specified direction, while defects damage their regularity of direction. Therefore, a direction-aware descriptor is designed, denoted as GHOG, a combination of Gabor and HOG, which is extremely valuable for localizing the defect region. Upon devising a powerful directional descriptor, an efficient low-rank decomposition model is constructed to divide the matrix generated by the directional feature extracted from image blocks into a low-rank matrix (background information) and a sparse matrix (defect information). A nonconvex log det(.) as a smooth surrogate function for the rank instead of the nuclear norm is also exploited to improve the efficiency of the low-rank model. Moreover, the computational efficiency is further improved by utilizing the alternative direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Thereafter, the saliency map generated by the sparse matrix is segmented via the optimal threshold algorithm to locate the defect regions. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively detect patterned fabric defects and outperform the state-of-the-art methods.

Multi-parameter mechanical and thermal sensing based on multi-mode planar photonic crystals

This paper proposes a novel multifunctional sensing platform based on multimode planar photonic crystals (PPCs). We analytically and numerically demonstrate that the reflection spectrum of PPCs exhibits multiple high-Q resonant modes, and the fundamental and higher-order modes respond distinctively to external mechanical and thermal perturbations, rendering the PPCs superior capability for detection and discrimination of multiple parameters. We further demonstrate simultaneous pressure and temperature sensing with a PPC sensor. Other advantages of PPC sensors include on-chip integration and wafer-scale fabrications.

Dynamic Parallel and Distributed Graph Cuts

Graph-cuts are widely used in computer vision. In order to speed up the optimization process and improve the scalability for large graphs, Strandmark and Kahl introduced a splitting method to split a graph into multiple subgraphs for parallel computation in both shared and distributed memory models. However, this parallel algorithm (parallel BK-algorithm) does not have a polynomial bound on the number of iterations and is found non-convergent in some cases due to the possible multiple optimal solutions of its sub-problems. To remedy this non-convergence problem, in this work we first introduce a merging method capable of merging any number of those adjacent sub-graphs which could hardly reach an agreement on their overlapped region in the parallel BK algorithm. Based on the pseudo-boolean representations of graph cuts, our merging method is shown able to effectively reuse all the computed flows in these sub-graphs. Through both the splitting and merging, we further propose a dynamic parallel and distributed graph-cuts algorithm with guaranteed convergence to the globally optimal solutions within a predefined number of iterations. In essence, this work provides a general framework to allow more sophisticated splitting and merging strategies to be employed to further boost performance. Our dynamic parallel algorithm is validated with extensive experimental results.

Rayleigh scattering and depolarization ratio in linear alkylbenzene

Linear alkylbenzene (LAB) is adopted to be the organic solvent for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) liquid scintillator detectors due to the ultra-transparency. However the current Rayleigh scattering length calculation disagrees with the measurement. The present paper for the first time reports the Rayleigh scattering of LAB being anisotropic and the depolarization ratio being 0.31+-0.01(stat.)+-0.01(sys.). We proposed an indirectly method for Rayleigh scattering measurement with Einstein-Smoluchowski-Cabannes formula, and the Rayleigh scattering length of LAB is determined to be 28.2+-1.0 m at 430 nm.

Quantification of propidium iodide delivery with millisecond electric pulses: A model study

A model study of propidium iodide delivery with millisecond electric pulses is presented; this work is a companion of the experimental efforts by Sadik et al. [1]. Both membrane permeabilization and delivery are examined with respect to six extra-cellular conductivities. The transmembrane potential of the permeabilized regions exhibits a consistent value, which corresponds to a bifurcation point in the pore-radius-potential relation. Both the pore area density and membrane conductance increase with an increasing extra-cellular conductivity. On the other hand, the inverse correlation between propidium iodide delivery and extra-cellular conductivity as observed in the experiments is quantitatively captured by the model. This agreement confirms that this behavior is primarily mediated by electrophoretic transport during the pulse. The results suggest that electrophoresis is important even for the delivery of small molecules such as propidium iodide. The direct comparison between model prediction and experimental data presented in this work helps validate the former as a robust predictive tool for the study of electroporation.
