The qualitative behavior at the free boundary for approximate harmonic maps from surfaces

Let $\{u_n\}$ be a sequence of maps from a compact Riemann surface $M$ with smooth boundary to a general compact Riemannian manifold $N$ with free boundary on a smooth submanifold $K\subset N$ satisfying \[ \sup_n \ \left(\|\nabla u_n\|_{L^2(M)}+\|τ(u_n)\|_{L^2(M)}\right)\leq Λ, \] where $τ(u_n)$ is the tension field of the map $u_n$. We show that the energy identity and the no neck property hold during a blow-up process. The assumptions are such that this result also applies to the harmonic map heat flow with free boundary, to prove the energy identity at finite singular time as well as at infinity time. Also, the no neck property holds at infinity time.

Partial Regularity for a Nonlinear Sigma Model with Gravitino in Higher Dimensions

We study the regularity problem of the nonlinear sigma model with gravitino fields in higher dimensions. After setting up the geometric model, we derive the Euler--Lagrange equations and consider the regularity of weak solutions defined in suitable Sobolev spaces. We show that any weak solution is actually smooth under some smallness assumption for certain Morrey norms. By assuming some higher integrability of the vector spinor, we can show a partial regularity result for stationary solutions, provided the gravitino is critical, which means that the corresponding supercurrent vanishes. Moreover, in dimension less than 6, partial regularity holds for stationary solutions with respect to general gravitino fields.

From harmonic maps to the nonlinear supersymmetric sigma model of quantum field theory. At the interface of theoretical physics, Riemannian geometry and nonlinear analysis

Harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces arise from a conformally invariant variational problem. Therefore, on one hand, they are intimately connected with moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces, and on the other hand, because the conformal group is noncompact, constitute a prototype for the formation of singularities, the so-called bubbles, in geometric analysis. In theoretical physics, they arise from the nonlinear $σ$-model of quantum field theory. That model possesses a supersymmetric extension, coupling a harmonic map like field with a nonlinear spinor field. In the physical model, that spinor field is anticommuting. In this contribution, we analyze both a mathematical version with a commuting spinor field and the original supersymmetric version. Moreover, this model gives rise to a further field, a gravitino, that can be seen as the supersymmetric partner of a Riemann surface metric. Altogether, this leads to a beautiful combination of concepts from quantum field theory, structures from Riemannian geometry and Riemann surface theory, and methods of nonlinear geometric analysis.

Vanishing Pohozaev constant and removability of singularities

Conformal invariance of two-dimensional variational problems is a condition known to enable a blow-up analysis of solutions and to deduce the removability of singularities. In this paper, we identify another condition that is not only sufficient, but also necessary for such a removability of singularities. This is the validity of the Pohozaev identity. In situations where such an identity fails to hold, we introduce a new quantity, called the {\it Pohozaev constant}, which on one hand measures the extent to which the Pohozaev identity fails and on the other hand provides a characterization of the singular behavior of a solution at an isolated singularity. We apply this to the blow-up analysis for super-Liouville type equations on Riemann surfaces with conical singularities, because in the presence of such singularities, conformal invariance no longer holds and a local singularity is in general non-removable unless the Pohozaev constant is vanishing.

The Super-Toda System and Bubbling of Spinors

We introduce the super-Toda system on Riemann surfaces and study the blow-up analysis for a sequence of solutions to the super-Toda system on a closed Riemann surface with uniformly bounded energy. In particular, we show the energy identities for the spinor parts of a blow-up sequence of solutions for which there are possibly four types of bubbling solutions, namely, finite energy solutions of the super-Liouville equation or the super-Toda system defined on $\R^2$ or on $\R^2\setminus\{0\}$. This is achieved by showing some new energy gap results for the spinor parts of these four types of bubbling solutions.

Regularity of Solutions of the Nonlinear Sigma Model with Gravitino

We propose a geometric setup to study analytic aspects of a variant of the super symmetric two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model. This functional extends the functional of Dirac-harmonic maps by gravitino fields. The system of Euler--Lagrange equations of the two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model with gravitino is calculated explicitly. The gravitino terms pose additional analytic difficulties to show smoothness of its weak solutions which are overcome using Rivière's regularity theory and Riesz potential theory.

Estimates for solutions of Dirac equations and an application to a geometric elliptic-parabolic problem

We develop estimates for the solutions and derive existence and uniqueness results of various local boundary value problems for Dirac equations that improve all relevant results known in the literature. With these estimates at hand, we derive a general existence, uniqueness and regularity theorem for solutions of Dirac equations with such boundary conditions. We also apply these estimates to a new nonlinear elliptic-parabolic problem, the Dirac-harmonic heat flow on Riemannian spin manifolds. This problem is motivated by the supersymmetric nonlinear $σ$-model and combines a harmonic heat flow type equation with a Dirac equation that depends nonlinearly on the flow.

Symmetries and conservation laws of a nonlinear sigma model with gravitino

We show that the action functional of the nonlinear sigma model with gravitino considered in a previous article [18] is invariant under rescaled conformal transformations, super Weyl transformations and diffeomorphisms. We give a careful geometric explanation how a variation of the metric leads to the corresponding variation of the spinors. In particular cases and despite using only commutative variables, the functional possesses a degenerate super symmetry. The corresponding conservation laws lead to a geometric interpretation of the energy-momentum tensor and supercurrent as holomorphic sections of appropriate bundles.

Energy quantization for a nonlinear sigma model with critical gravitinos

We study some analytical and geometric properties of a two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model with gravitino which comes from supersymmetric string theory. When the action is critical w.r.t. variations of the various fields including the gravitino, there is a symmetric, traceless and divergence-free energy-momentum tensor, which gives rise to a holomorphic quadratic differential. Using it we obtain a Pohozaev type identity and finally we can establish the energy identities along a weakly convergent sequence of fields with uniformly bounded energies.

Regularity at the free boundary for Dirac-harmonic maps from surfaces

We establish the regularity theory for certain critical elliptic systems with an anti-symmetric structure under inhomogeneous Neumann and Dirichlet boundary constraints. As applications, we prove full regularity and smooth estimates at the free boundary for weakly Dirac-harmonic maps from spin Riemann surfaces. Our methods also lead to the full interior $ε$-regularity and smooth estimates for weakly Dirac-harmonic maps in all dimensions.

Asymptotics of the Teichmüller harmonic map flow

The Teichmüller harmonic map flow, introduced in [9], evolves both a map from a closed Riemann surface to an arbitrary compact Riemannian manifold, and a constant curvature metric on the domain, in order to reduce its harmonic map energy as quickly as possible. In this paper, we develop the geometric analysis of holomorphic quadratic differentials in order to explain what happens in the case that the domain metric of the flow degenerates at infinite time. We obtain a branched minimal immersion from the degenerate domain.

Regularity for harmonic maps into certain Pseudo-Riemannian manifolds

In this article, we investigate the regularity for certain elliptic systems without a $L^2$-antisymmetric structure. As applications, we prove some $ε$-regularity theorems for weakly harmonic maps from the unit ball $B= B(m) \subset \mathbb{R}^m $ $(m\geq2)$ into certain pseudo-Riemannian manifolds: standard stationary Lorentzian manifolds, pseudospheres $\mathbb{S}^n_ν\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}_ν$ $(1\leqν\leq n)$ and pseudohyperbolic spaces $\mathbb{H}^n_ν\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}_{ν+1}$ $(0\leqν\leq n-1)$. Consequently, such maps are shown to be Hölder continuous (and as smooth as the regularity of the targets permits) in dimension $m=2$. In particular, we prove that any weakly harmonic map from a disc into the De-Sitter space $\mathbb{S}^n_1$ or the Anti-de-Sitter space $\mathbb{H}^n_1$ is smooth. Also, we give an alternative proof of the Hölder continuity of any weakly harmonic map from a disc into the Hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$ without using the fact that the target is nonpositively curved. Moreover, we extend the notion of generalized (weakly) harmonic maps from a disc into the standard sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ to the case that the target is $\mathbb{S}^n_ν$ $(1\leqν\leq n)$ or $\mathbb{H}^n_ν$ $(0\leqν\leq n-1)$, and obtain some $ε$-regularity results for such generalized (weakly) harmonic maps.

Some explicit constructions of Dirac-harmonic maps

We construct explicit examples of Dirac-harmonic maps $(ϕ, ψ)$ between Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ and $(N,g')$ which are non-trivial in the sense that $ϕ$ is not harmonic. When $\dim M=2$, we also produce examples where $ϕ$ is harmonic, but not conformal, and $ψ$ is non-trivial.

Dirac-harmonic maps from degenerating spin surfaces I: the Neveu-Schwarz case

We study Dirac-harmonic maps from degenerating spin surfaces with uniformly bounded energy and show the so-called generalized energy identity in the case that the domain converges to a spin surface with only Neveu-Schwarz type nodes. We find condition that is both necessary and sufficient for the $W^{1,2} \times L^{4}$ modulo bubbles compactness of a sequence of such maps.
