STAR-RIS-Aided Mobile Edge Computing: Computation Rate Maximization with Binary Amplitude Coefficients

In this paper, simultaneously transmitting and reflecting (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is investigated in the multi-user mobile edge computing (MEC) system to improve the computation rate. Compared with traditional RIS-aided MEC, STAR-RIS extends the service coverage from half-space to full-space and provides new flexibility for improving the computation rate for end users. However, the STAR-RIS-aided MEC system design is a challenging problem due to the non-smooth and non-convex binary amplitude coefficients with coupled phase shifters. To fill this gap, this paper formulates a computation rate maximization problem via the joint design of the STAR-RIS phase shifts, reflection and transmission amplitude coefficients, the receive beamforming vectors, and energy partition strategies for local computing and offloading. To tackle the discontinuity caused by binary variables, we propose an efficient smoothing-based method to decrease convergence error, in contrast to the conventional penalty-based method, which brings many undesired stationary points and local optima. Furthermore, a fast iterative algorithm is proposed to obtain a stationary point for the joint optimization problem, with each subproblem solved by a low-complexity algorithm, making the proposed design scalable to a massive number of users and STAR-RIS elements. Simulation results validate the strength of the proposed smoothing-based method and show that the proposed fast iterative algorithm achieves a higher computation rate than the conventional method while saving the computation time by at least an order of magnitude. Moreover, the resultant STAR-RIS-aided MEC system significantly improves the computation rate compared to other baseline schemes with conventional reflect-only/transmit-only RIS.

Model-Driven Based Deep Unfolding Equalizer for Underwater Acoustic OFDM Communications

It is challenging to design an equalizer for the complex time-frequency doubly-selective channel. In this paper, we employ the deep unfolding approach to establish an equalizer for the underwater acoustic (UWA) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, namely UDNet. Each layer of UDNet is designed according to the classical minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer. Moreover, we consider the QPSK equalization as a four-classification task and adopt minimum Kullback-Leibler (KL) to achieve a smaller symbol error rate (SER) with the one-hot coding instead of the MMSE criterion. In addition, we introduce a sliding structure based on the banded approximation of the channel matrix to reduce the network size and aid UDNet to perform well for different-length signals without changing the network structure. Furthermore, we apply the measured at-sea doubly-selective UWA channel and offshore background noise to evaluate the proposed equalizer. Experimental results show that the proposed UDNet performs better with low computational complexity. Concretely, the SER of UDNet is nearly an order of magnitude lower than that of MMSE.

Edge-Assisted V2X Motion Planning and Power Control Under Channel Uncertainty

Edge-assisted vehicle-to-everything (V2X) motion planning is an emerging paradigm to achieve safe and efficient autonomous driving, since it leverages the global position information shared among multiple vehicles. However, due to the imperfect channel state information (CSI), the position information of vehicles may become outdated and inaccurate. Conventional methods ignoring the communication delays could severely jeopardize driving safety. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a robust V2X motion planning policy that adapts between competitive driving under a low communication delay and conservative driving under a high communication delay, and guarantees small communication delays at key waypoints via power control. This is achieved by integrating the vehicle mobility and communication delay models and solving a joint design of motion planning and power control problem via the block coordinate descent framework. Simulation results show that the proposed driving policy achieves the smallest collision ratio compared with other benchmark policies.

Counteracting Eavesdropper Attacks Through Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: A New Threat Model and Secrecy Rate Optimization

The potential of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) for energy-efficient and performance-boosted wireless communications is recently gaining remarkable research attention, motivating their consideration for various $5$-th Generation (5G) Advanced and beyond applications. In this paper, we consider a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Physical Layer Security (PLS) system with multiple data streams including one legitimate passive RIS and one malicious passive RIS, with the former being transparent to the multi-antenna eavesdropper and the latter's presence being unknown at the legitimate multi-antenna transceivers. We first present a novel threat model for the RIS-boosted eavesdropping system and design a joint optimization framework for the eavesdropper's receive combining matrix and the reflection coefficients of the malicious RIS. Focusing next on the secrecy rate maximization problem, we present an RIS-empowered PLS scheme that jointly designs the legitimate precoding matrix and number of data streams, the Artificial Noise (AN) covariance matrix, the receive combining matrix, and the reflection coefficients of the legitimate RIS. The proposed optimization algorithms, whose convergence to at least local optimum points is proved, are based on alternating maximization, minorization-maximization, and manifold optimization, including semi-closed form expressions for the optimization variables. Our extensive simulation results for two representative system setups reveal that, in the absence of a legitimate RIS, transceiver spatial filtering and AN are incapable of offering non-zero secrecy rates, even for malicious RISs with small numbers of elements. However, when an $L$-element legitimate RIS is deployed, confidential communication can be safeguarded against eavesdropping systems possessing even more than a $5L$-element malicious RIS.

Simultaneously Transmitting and Reflecting RIS-Aided Mobile Edge Computing: Computation Rate Maximization

In this paper, the novel simultaneously transmitting and reflecting (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which enables full-space coverage on users located on both sides of the surface, is investigated in the multi-user mobile edge computing (MEC) system. A computation rate maximization problem is formulated via the joint design of the STAR-RIS phase shifts, reflection and transmission amplitude coefficients, the receive beamforming vectors at the access point, and the users' energy partition strategies for local computing and offloading. Two operating protocols of STAR-RIS, namely energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) are studied. Based on DC programming and semidefinite relaxation, an iterative algorithm is proposed for the ES protocol to solve the formulated non-convex problem. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is extended to solve the non-convex, non-continuous MS problems with binary amplitude coefficients. Simulation results show that the resultant STAR-RIS-aided MEC system significantly improves the computation rate compared to the baseline scheme with conventional reflect-only/transmit-only RIS.

Hybrid Reflection Modulation

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-empowered communication has emerged as a novel concept for customizing future wireless environments in a cost- and energy-efficient way. However, due to double path loss, existing fully passive RIS systems that purely reflect the incident signals into preferred directions attain an unsatisfactory performance improvement over the traditional wireless networks in certain conditions. To overcome this bottleneck, we propose a novel transmission scheme, named hybrid reflection modulation (HRM), exploiting both active and passive reflecting elements at the RIS and their combinations, which enables to convey information without using any radio frequency (RF) chains. In the HRM scheme, the active reflecting elements using additional power amplifiers are able to amplify and reflect the incoming signal, while the remaining passive elements can simply reflect the signals with appropriate phase shifts. Based on this novel transmission model, we obtain an upper bound for the average bit error probability (ABEP), and derive achievable rate of the system using an information theoretic approach. Moreover, comprehensive computer simulations are performed to prove the superiority of the proposed HRM scheme over existing fully passive, fully active and reflection modulation (RM) systems.

A Novel Block-Wise Index Modulation Scheme for High-Mobility OTFS Communications

As a promising technique for high-mobility wireless communications, orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) has been proved to enjoy excellent advantages with respect to traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). However, a challenging problem is to design efficient systems to further improve the performance. In this paper, we propose a novel block-wise index modulation (IM) scheme for OTFS systems, named Doppler-IM with OTFS (DoIM-OTFS), where a block of Doppler resource bins are activated simultaneously. For practical implementation, we develop a low complexity customized message passing (CMP) algorithm for our proposed DoIM-OTFS scheme. Simulation results demonstrate our proposed DoIM-OTFS system outperforms traditional OTFS system without IM. The proposed CMP algorithm can achieve desired performance and robustness to the imperfect channel state information (CSI).

Multi-Point Integrated Sensing and Communication: Fusion Model and Functionality Selection

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) represents a paradigm shift, where previously competing wireless transmissions are jointly designed to operate in harmony via the shared use of the hardware platform for improving the spectral and energy efficiencies. However, due to adversarial factors such as fading and interference, ISAC may suffer from high sensing uncertainties. This paper presents a multi-point ISAC (MPISAC) system that fuses the outputs from multiple ISAC devices for achieving higher sensing performance by exploiting multi-view data redundancy. Furthermore, we propose to effectively explore the performance trade-off between sensing and communication via a functionality selection module that adaptively determines the working state (i.e., sensing or communication) of an ISAC device. The crux of our approach is to derive a fusion model that predicts the fusion accuracy via hypothesis testing and optimal voting analysis. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of MPISAC over various benchmark schemes and show that the proposed approach can effectively span the trade-off region in ISAC systems.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted OFDM Relaying: Subcarrier Matching with Balanced SNR

This paper considers a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) relaying system, and investigates the joint design of RIS passive beamforming and subcarrier matching under two cases, where Case-I ignores the source-RIS-destination signal, while Case-II explores this signal for rate enhancement. We formulate a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINIP) problem to maximize the sum achievable rate of all subcarriers by jointly optimizing the passive beamforming and subcarrier matching. To solve this problem, we first develop a branch-and-bound (BnB)-based alternating optimization algorithm for attaining a near-optimal solution. Then, a low-complexity difference-of-convex penalty-based algorithm and learning-to-optimize approach are also proposed. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the RIS-assisted OFDM relaying system achieves a substantial achievable rate gain as compared to that without RIS since RIS recasts the subcarrier matching and balances the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) among different subcarrier pairs.

Secure Transmission for THz-Empowered RIS-Assisted Non-Terrestrial Networks

The non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) are recognized as a key component to provide cost-effective and high-capacity ubiquitous connectivity in the future wireless communications. In this paper, we investigate the secure transmission in a terahertz (THz)-empowered reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted NTN (T-RANTN), which is composed of a low-Earth orbit satellite transmitter, an RIS-installed high-altitude platform (HAP) and two unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) receivers, only one of which is trustworthy. An approximate ergodic secrecy rate (ESR) expression is derived when the atmosphere turbulence and pointing error due to the characteristics of THz as well as the phase errors resulting from finite precision of RIS and imperfect channel estimation are taken into account simultaneously. Furthermore, according to the statistical and perfect channel state information of the untrustworthy receiver, we optimize the phase shifts of RIS to maximize the lower bound of secrecy rate (SR) and instantaneous SR, respectively, by using semidefinite relaxation method. Simulation results show that both the approximate expression for the ESR and the optimization algorithms are serviceable, and even when the jitter standard variance of the trustworthy receiver is greater than that of the untrustworthy one, a positive SR can still be guaranteed.

Low Complexity First: Duration-Centric ISI Mitigation in Molecular Communication via Diffusion

In this paper, we propose a novel inter-symbol interference (ISI) mitigation scheme for molecular communication via diffusion (MCvD) systems with the optimal detection interval. Its rationale is to exploit the discarded duration (i.e., the symbol duration outside this optimal interval) to relieve ISI in the target system. Following this idea, we formulate an objective function to quantify the impact of the discarded time on bit error rate (BER) performance. Besides, an optimally reusable interval within the discarded duration is derived in closed form, which applies to both the absorbing and passive receivers. Finally, numerical results validate our analysis and show that for the considered MCvD system, significant BER improvements can be achieved by using the derived reusable duration.

Channel Estimation and Multipath Diversity Reception for RIS-Empowered Broadband Wireless Systems Based on Cyclic-Prefixed Single-Carrier Transmission

In this paper, a cyclic-prefixed single-carrier (CPSC) transmission scheme with phase shift keying (PSK) signaling is presented for broadband wireless communications systems empowered by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). In the proposed CPSC-RIS, the RIS is configured according to the transmitted PSK symbols such that different cyclically delayed versions of the incident signal are created by the RIS to achieve multipath diversity. A practical and efficient channel estimator is developed for CPSC-RIS and the mean square error of the channel estimation is expressed in closed-form. We analyze the bit error rate (BER) performance of CPSC-RIS over frequency-selective Nakagami-$m$ fading channels. An upper bound on the BER is derived by assuming the maximum-likelihood detection. Furthermore, by resorting to the concept of index modulation (IM), we propose an extension of CPSC-RIS, termed CPSC-RIS-IM, which enhances the spectral efficiency. In addition to conventional constellation information of PSK symbols, CPSC-RIS-IM uses the full permutations of cyclic delays caused by the RIS to carry information. A sub-optimal receiver is designed for CPSC-RIS-IM to aim at low computational complexity. Our simulation results in terms of BER corroborate the performance analysis and the superiority of CPSC-RIS(-IM) over the conventional CPSC without an RIS and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with an RIS.

Phase Shift Design in RIS Empowered Wireless Networks: From Optimization to AI-Based Methods

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have a revolutionary capability to customize the radio propagation environment for wireless networks. To fully exploit the advantages of RISs in wireless systems, the phases of the reflecting elements must be jointly designed with conventional communication resources, such as beamformers, transmit power, and computation time. However, due to the unique constraints on the phase shift, and massive numbers of reflecting units and users in large-scale networks, the resulting optimization problems are challenging to solve. This paper provides a review of current optimization methods and artificial intelligence-based methods for handling the constraints imposed by RIS and compares them in terms of solution quality and computational complexity. Future challenges in phase shift optimization involving RISs are also described and potential solutions are discussed.

Detection Interval for Diffusion Molecular Communication: How Long is Enough?

Molecular communication has a key role to play in future medical applications, including detecting, analyzing, and addressing infectious disease outbreaks. Overcoming inter-symbol interference (ISI) is one of the key challenges in the design of molecular communication systems. In this paper, we propose to optimize the detection interval to minimize the impact of ISI while ensuring the accurate detection of the transmitted information symbol, which is suitable for the absorbing and passive receivers. For tractability, based on the signal-to-interference difference (SID) and signal-to-interference-and-noise amplitude ratio (SINAR), we propose a modified-SINAR (mSINAR) to measure the bit error rate (BER) performance for the molecular communication system with a variable detection interval. Besides, we derive the optimal detection interval in closed form. Using simulation results, we show that the BER performance of our proposed mSINAR scheme is superior to the competing schemes, and achieves similar performance to optimal intervals found by the exhaustive search.

Robotic Wireless Energy Transfer in Dynamic Environments: System Design and Experimental Validation

Wireless energy transfer (WET) is a ground-breaking technology for cutting the last wire between mobile sensors and power grids in smart cities. Yet, WET only offers effective transmission of energy over a short distance. Robotic WET is an emerging paradigm that mounts the energy transmitter on a mobile robot and navigates the robot through different regions in a large area to charge remote energy harvesters. However, it is challenging to determine the robotic charging strategy in an unknown and dynamic environment due to the uncertainty of obstacles. This paper proposes a hardware-in-the-loop joint optimization framework that offers three distinctive features: 1) efficient model updates and re-optimization based on the last-round experimental data; 2) iterative refinement of the anchor list for adaptation to different environments; 3) verification of algorithms in a high-fidelity Gazebo simulator and a multi-robot testbed. Experimental results show that the proposed framework significantly saves the WET mission completion time while satisfying collision avoidance and energy harvesting constraints.

Delay Aware Secure Offloading for NOMA-Assisted Mobile Edge Computing in Internet of Vehicles

In this paper, a multi-vehicle multi-task nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) system with passive eavesdropping vehicles is investigated. To heighten the performance of edge vehicles, we propose a vehicle grouping pairing method, which utilizes vehicles near the MEC as full-duplex relays to assist edge vehicles. For promoting transmission security, we employ artificial noise to interrupt eavesdropping vehicles. Furthermore, we derive the approximate expression of secrecy outage probability of the system. The combined optimization of vehicle task division, power allocation, and transmit beamforming is formulated to minimize the total delay of task completion of edge vehicles. Then, we design a power allocation and task scheduling algorithm based on genetic algorithm to solve the mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed scheme in terms of system security and transmission delay.

Next-Generation Multiple Access Based on NOMA with Power Level Modulation

To cope with the explosive traffic growth of next-generation wireless communications, it is necessary to design next-generation multiple access techniques that can provide higher spectral efficiency as well as larger-scale connectivity. As a promising candidate, power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been widely studied. In conventional power-domain NOMA, multiple users are multiplexed in the same time and frequency band by different preset power levels, which, however, may limit the spectral efficiency under practical finite alphabet inputs. Inspired by the concept of spatial modulation, we propose to solve this problem by encoding extra information bits into the power levels, and exploit different signal constellations to help the receiver distinguish between them. To convey this idea, termed power selection (PS)-NOMA, clearly, we consider a simple downlink two-user NOMA system with finite input constellations. Assuming maximum-likelihood detection, we derive closed-form approximate bit error ratio (BER) expressions for both users. The achievable rates of both users are also derived in closed form. Simulation results verify the analysis and show that the proposed PS-NOMA outperforms conventional NOMA in terms of BER and achievable rate.

Secure Massive RIS aided Multicast with Uncertain CSI: Energy-Efficiency Maximization via Accelerated First-Order Algorithms

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has the potential to significantly enhance the network secure transmission performance by reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. However, due to the passive nature of eavesdroppers and the cascaded channel brought by the RIS, the eavesdroppers' channel state information is imperfectly obtained at the base station. Under the channel uncertainty, the optimal phase-shift, power allocation, and transmission rate design for secure transmission is currently unknown due to the difficulty of handling the probabilistic constraint with coupled variables. To fill this gap, this paper formulates a problem of energy-efficient secure transmission design while incorporating the probabilistic constraint. By transforming the probabilistic constraint and decoupling the variables, the secure energy efficiency maximization problem can be solved via alternatively executing concave-convex procedure and semidefinite relaxation technique. To scale the solution to massive antennas and reflecting elements scenario, an accelerated first-order algorithm with low complexity is further proposed.Simulation results show that the proposed accelerated first-order algorithm achieves identical performance to the conventional method but saves at least two orders of magnitude in computation time. Moreover, the resultant RIS aided secure transmission significantly improves the energy efficiency compared to baseline schemes of random phase-shift, fixed phase-shift, and RIS ignoring CSI uncertainty.
