We investigate the reviews of a Comptes rendus note by André Weil in 1940 in the three journals Jahrbuch über die Fortschritte der Mathematik, Zentralblatt für Mathematik und ihre Grenzgebiete and Mathematical Reviews, together with the context of the publication of these reviews.
We publish a letter from Lebesgue to Cartan and a letter from Montel to Cartan, dated 1933--1934, about Gaston Julia, Paul Montel, and an election at the Paris Academy of Sciences. We discuss the context and the mathematics. The two letters have been discovered between the publication of the book "Fatou, Julia, Montel, le Grand prix des sciences mathématiques de 1918 et après" (Springer 2009) and the publication of the English translation (Springer 2011). They have been included in the translation. This paper is dedicated to the readers of the French version.
This is an article on mathematical publishing during the German occupation of France. Looking at the cases of four of them and especially at the case of Jacques Feldbau (one of the founders of the theory of fibre bundles), we investigate the way censorship struck the French mathematicians who declared jewish by the Statut des juifs of october 1940, and the strategies these mathematicians then developed. The way the Vichy laws have been discussed and applied at the Académie des sciences is investigated.
