Higher-order tails and RG flows due to scattering of gravitational radiation from binary inspirals

We establish and develop a novel methodology to treat higher-order non-linear effects of gravitational radiation that is scattered from binary inspirals, which employs modern scattering-amplitudes methods on the effective picture of the binary as a composite particle. We spell out our procedure to study such effects: assembling tree amplitudes via generalized-unitarity methods and employing the closed-time-path formalism to derive the causal effective actions, which encompass the full conservative and dissipative dynamics. We push through to a new state of the art for these higher-order effects, up to the third subleading tail effect, at order G5N and the 5-loop level, which corresponds to the 8.5PN order. We formulate the consequent dissipated energy for these higher-order corrections, and carry out a renormalization analysis, where we uncover new subleading RG flow of the quadrupole coupling. For all higher-order tail effects we find perfect agreement with partial observable results in PN and self-force theories, where available.

From the EFT of Spinning Gravitating Objects to Poincaré and Gauge Invariance at the 4.5PN Precision Frontier

We confirm the generalized actions of the complete NLO cubic-in-spin interactions for generic compact binaries which were first tackled via an extension of the EFT of spinning gravitating objects. We first reduce these generalized actions to standard actions with spins, where the interaction potentials are found to consist of $6$ independent sectors, including a new unique sector that is proportional to the square of the quadrupolar deformation parameter, $C_{\text{ES}^2}$. We derive the general Hamiltonians in an arbitrary reference frame, and for generic kinematic configurations. With these most general Hamiltonians we construct the full Poincaré algebra of all the sectors at the fourth and a half post-Newtonian (4.5PN) order, including the third subleading spin-orbit sector, recently accomplished uniquely via our framework, thus proving the Poincaré invariance of all relevant sectors. We then derive the binding energies with gauge-invariant relations useful for gravitational-wave applications. Finally, we also derive the extrapolated scattering angles in the aligned-spins configuration for the scattering problem. Yet, as made clear already as of quadratic-in-spin sectors, the aligned-spins simplification inherent to the scattering-angle observable, entails a great loss of physical information, that is only growing with higher-spin sectors. Our completion of the full Poincaré algebra at the present $4.5$PN order provides strong confidence that this new precision frontier in PN theory has now been established.

Completing the Fifth PN Precision Frontier via the EFT of Spinning Gravitating Objects

We put forward a broader picture of the effective theory of a spinning particle within the EFT of spinning gravitating objects, through which we derive and establish the new precision frontier at the fifth PN (5PN) order. This frontier includes higher-spin sectors, quadratic and quartic in the spin, which both display novel physical features, due to the extension of the effective theory beyond linear order in the curvature. The quadratic-in-spin sectors give rise to a new tidal effect, and the quartic-in-spin sectors exhibit a new multipolar deformation. We then generalize the concept of tidal operators and of spin-induced multipolar operators, and make conjectures on the numerical values of their Wilson coefficients, and on the effective point-particle action of Kerr black holes. We confirm the generalized actions for generic compact binaries of the NLO quartic-in-spin sectors which were derived via the extension of the EFT of gravitating spinning objects. We first present the corresponding interaction potentials and general Hamiltonians, which consist of 12 distinct sectors, with a new one due to the new multipolar deformation. These Hamiltonians give the full physical information on the binary system, which mostly gets lost in higher-spin sectors, when going to the aligned-spins configuration. Moreover these general Hamiltonians uniquely allow us to find the complete Poincaré algebra at the 5PN order with spins, including the third subleading quadratic-in-spin sectors. We derive consequent observables for GW applications. Finally, to make contact with the scattering problem, we also derive the extrapolated scattering angles for aligned spins. Our completion of the Poincaré algebra provides the strongest validation of our most comprehensive new results, and thus that the 5PN order has now been established as the new precision frontier.

N$^3$LO Quadratic-in-Spin Interactions for Generic Compact Binaries

We derive the third subleading (N$^3$LO) corrections of the quadratic-in-spin sectors via the EFT of spinning objects in post-Newtonian (PN) gravity. These corrections consist of contributions from $4$ sectors for generic compact binaries, that enter at the fifth PN order. One of these contributions is due to a new tidal interaction, that is unique to the sectors with spin, and complements the first tidal interaction that also enters at this PN order in the simple point-mass sector. The evaluation of Feynman graphs is carried out in a generic dimension via advanced multi-loop methods, and gives rise to dimensional-regularization poles in conjunction with logarithms. At these higher-spin sectors the reduction of generalized Lagrangians entails redefinitions of the position beyond linear order. We provide here the most general Lagrangians and Hamiltonians. We then specify the latter to simplified configurations, and derive the consequent gauge-invariant relations among the binding energy, angular momentum, and frequency. We end with a derivation of all the scattering angles that correspond to an extension of our Hamiltonians to the scattering problem in the simplified aligned-spins configuration, as a guide to scattering-amplitudes studies.

N$^3$LO Spin-Orbit Interaction via the EFT of Spinning Gravitating Objects

We present the derivation of the third subleading order (N$^3$LO) spin-orbit interaction at the state of the art of post-Newtonian (PN) gravity via the EFT of spinning objects. The present sector contains the largest and most elaborate collection of Feynman graphs ever tackled to date in sectors with spin, and in all PN sectors up to third subleading order. Our computations are carried out via advanced multi-loop methods. Their most demanding aspect is the imperative transition to a generic dimension across the whole derivation, due to the emergence of dimensional-regularization poles across all loop orders as of the N$^3$LO sectors. At this high order of sectors with spin, it is also critical to extend the formal procedure for the reduction of higher-order time derivatives of spin variables beyond linear order for the first time. This gives rise to a new unique contribution at the present sector. The full interaction potential in Lagrangian form and the general Hamiltonian are provided here for the first time. The consequent gravitational-wave (GW) gauge-invariant observables are also derived, including relations among the binding energy, angular momentum, and emitted frequency. Complete agreement is found between our results, and the binding energy of GW sources, and also with the extrapolated scattering angle in the scattering problem, derived via traditional GR. In contrast with the latter derivation, our framework is free-standing and generic, and has provided theory and results, which have been critical to establish the state of the art, and to push the precision frontier for the measurement of GWs.

A tale of tails through generalized unitarity

We introduce a novel framework to study high-order gravitational effects on a binary from the scattering of its emitted gravitational radiation. Here we focus on the radiation-reaction due to the background of the binary's gravitational potential, namely on the so-called tail effects, as the starting point to this type of scattering effects. We start from the effective field theory of a binary composite-particle. Through multi-loop and generalized-unitarity methods, we derive the causal effective actions of the dynamical multipoles, the energy spectra, and the observable flux, due to these effects. We proceed through the third subleading such radiation-reaction effect, at the four-loop level and seventh order in post-Newtonian gravity, shedding new light on the higher-order effects, and pushing the state of the art.

Quadratic-in-spin interactions at fifth post-Newtonian order probe new physics

We obtain for the first time all quadratic-in-spin interactions in spinning binaries at the third subleading order in post-Newtonian (PN) gravity, and provide their observable binding energies and their gauge-invariant relations to the angular momentum. Our results are valid for generic compact objects, orbits, and spin orientations, and enter at the fifth PN order for maximally-rotating objects, thus pushing the state of the art. This is accomplished through an extension of the effective field theory of spinning gravitating objects, and of its computational application. We also discover a new finite-size effect which is unique to spinning objects, with a new ``Spin Love number'' as its characteristic coefficient, that is a new probe for gravity and QCD.

Complete conservative dynamics for inspiralling compact binaries with spins at the fourth post-Newtonian order

In this work we complete the spin-dependent conservative dynamics of inspiralling compact binaries at the fourth post-Newtonian order, and in particular the derivation of the next-to-next-to-leading order spin-squared interaction potential. We derive the physical equations of motion of the position and the spin from a direct variation of the action. Further, we derive the quadratic-in-spin Hamiltonians, as well as their expressions in the center-of-mass frame. We construct the conserved integrals of motion, which form the Poincaré algebra. This construction provided a consistency check for the validity of our result, which is crucial in particular in the current absence of another independent derivation of the next-to-next-to-leading order spin-squared interaction. Finally, we provide here the complete gauge-invariant relations among the binding energy, angular momentum, and orbital frequency of an inspiralling binary with generic compact spinning components to the fourth post-Newtonian order. These high post-Newtonian orders, in particular taking into account the spins of the binary constituents, will enable to gain more accurate information on the constituents from even more sensitive gravitational-wave detections to come.

N$^3$LO gravitational spin-orbit coupling at order $G^4$

In this paper we derive for the first time the N$^3$LO gravitational spin-orbit coupling at order $G^4$ in the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation within the effective field theory (EFT) of gravitating spinning objects. This represents the first computation in a spinning sector involving three-loop integration. We provide a comprehensive account of the topologies in the worldline picture for the computation at order $G^4$. Our computation makes use of the publicly-available \texttt{EFTofPNG} code, which is extended using loop-integration techniques from particle amplitudes. We provide the results for each of the Feynman diagrams in this sector. The three-loop graphs in the worldline picture give rise to new features in the spinning sector, including divergent terms and logarithms from dimensional regularization, as well as transcendental numbers, all of which survive in the final result of the topologies at this order. This result enters at the 4.5PN order for maximally-rotating compact objects, and together with previous work in this line, paves the way for the completion of this PN accuracy.

NNNLO gravitational quadratic-in-spin interactions at the quartic order in G

We compute the N$^3$LO gravitational quadratic-in-spin interactions at $G^4$ in the post-Newtonian (PN) expansion via the effective field theory (EFT) of gravitating spinning objects for the first time. This result contributes at the $5$PN order for maximally-spinning compact objects, adding the spinning case to the static sector at this PN accuracy. This sector requires extending the EFT of a spinning particle beyond linear order in the curvature to include higher-order operators quadratic in the curvature that are relevant at this PN order. We make use of a diagrammatic expansion in the worldline picture, and rely on our recent upgrade of the \texttt{EFTofPNG} code, which we further extend to handle this sector. Similar to the spin-orbit sector, we find that the contributing three-loop graphs give rise to divergences, logarithms, and transcendental numbers. However, in this sector all of these features conspire to cancel out from the final result, which contains only finite rational terms.

Gravitational cubic-in-spin interaction at the next-to-leading post-Newtonian order

In this work we derive for the first time the complete gravitational cubic-in-spin effective action at the next-to-leading order in the post-Newtonian (PN) expansion for the interaction of generic compact binaries via the effective field theory for gravitating spinning objects, which we extend in this work. This sector, which enters at the fourth and a half PN (4.5PN) order for rapidly-rotating compact objects, completes finite-size effects up to this PN order, and is the first sector completed beyond the current state of the art for generic compact binary dynamics at the 4PN order. At this order in spins with gravitational nonlinearities we have to take into account additional terms, which arise from a new type of worldline couplings, due to the fact that at this order the Tulczyjew gauge for the rotational degrees of freedom, which involves the linear momentum, can no longer be approximated only in terms of the four-velocity. One of the main motivations for us to tackle this sector is also to see what happens when we go to a sector, which corresponds to the gravitational Compton scattering with quantum spins larger than one, and maybe possibly also get an insight on the inability to uniquely fix its amplitude from factorization when spins larger than two are involved. A general observation that we can clearly make already is that even-parity sectors in the order of the spin are easier to handle than odd ones. In the quantum context this corresponds to the greater ease of dealing with bosons compared to fermions.

NLO gravitational quartic-in-spin interaction

In this paper we derive for the first time the complete gravitational quartic-in-spin interaction of generic compact binaries at the next-to-leading order in the post-Newtonian (PN) expansion. The derivation builds on the effective field theory for gravitating spinning objects, and its recent extensions, in which new type of worldline couplings should be considered, as well as on the extension of the effective action of a spinning particle to quadratic order in the curvature. The latter extension entails a new Wilson coefficient that appears in this sector. This work pushes the precision frontier with spins at the fifth PN (5PN) order for maximally-spinning compact objects, and at the same time informs us of the gravitational Compton scattering with higher spins.

Effective Field Theories of Post-Newtonian Gravity: A comprehensive review

[Abridged] This review article presents the progress made over the last decade, since the introduction of effective field theories (EFTs) into post-Newtonian (PN) gravity. These have been put forward in the context of gravitational waves (GWs) from the compact binary inspiral. The mature development of this interdisciplinary field has resulted in significant advances of wide interest to physics at several levels serving various purposes. The field has firmly demonstrated, that seemingly disparate physical domains, such as quantum field theory and classical gravity, are related, and that the EFT framework is a universal one, where it has been proven to supply a robust methodology to boost progress in the development of PN theory. The review is aimed at a broad audience, from general readers new to the field, to specialists and experts in related subjects. The review begins with an overview of the introduction of EFTs into classical gravity and their development. Then, the basic ideas, which form the conceptual foundation of EFTs, are provided, and the strategy of a multi-stage EFT framework, which is utilized for the PN binary inspiral problem, is outlined. The main body of the review is then dedicated to presenting in detail the study of each of the effective theories at each of the intermediate scales in the problem, up to the actual GW observables. The review is concluded with the multiple prospects of building on the progress in the field, and using further modern field theory insights and tools, to specifically address the study of GWs, as well as to broadly expand our fundamental understanding of gauge and gravity theories across the classical and quantum regimes.

Next-to-next-to-leading order gravitational spin-squared potential via the effective field theory for spinning objects in the post-Newtonian scheme

The next-to-next-to-leading order spin-squared interaction potential for generic compact binaries is derived for the first time via the effective field theory for gravitating spinning objects in the post-Newtonian scheme. The spin-squared sector is an intricate one, as it requires the consideration of the point particle action beyond minimal coupling, and mainly involves the spin-squared worldline couplings, which are quite complex, compared to the worldline couplings from the minimal coupling part of the action. This sector also involves the linear in spin couplings, as we go up in the nonlinearity of the interaction, and in the loop order. Hence, there is an excessive increase in the number of Feynman diagrams, of which more are higher loop ones. We provide all the Feynman diagrams and their values. The beneficial nonrelativistic gravitational fields are employed in the computation. This spin-squared correction, which enters at the fourth post-Newtonian order for rapidly rotating compact objects, completes the conservative sector up to the fourth post-Newtonian accuracy. The robustness of the effective field theory for gravitating spinning objects is shown here once again, as demonstrated in a recent series of papers by the authors, which obtained all spin dependent sectors, required up to the fourth post-Newtonian accuracy. The effective field theory of spinning objects allows to directly obtain the equations of motion, and the Hamiltonians, and these will be derived for the potential obtained here in a forthcoming paper.

Next-to-next-to-leading order gravitational spin-orbit coupling via the effective field theory for spinning objects in the post-Newtonian scheme

We implement the effective field theory for gravitating spinning objects in the post-Newtonian scheme at the next-to-next-to-leading order level to derive the gravitational spin-orbit interaction potential at the third and a half post-Newtonian order for rapidly rotating compact objects. From the next-to-next-to-leading order interaction potential, which we obtain here in a Lagrangian form for the first time, we derive straightforwardly the corresponding Hamiltonian. The spin-orbit sector constitutes the most elaborate spin dependent sector at each order, and accordingly we encounter a proliferation of the relevant Feynman diagrams, and a significant increase of the computational complexity. We present the evaluation of the interaction potential, going over contributing Feynman diagrams. The computation is carried out in terms of the nonrelativistic gravitational fields, together with the various gauge choices included in the effective field theory for gravitating spinning objects, which optimize the calculation. In addition, we automatize the effective field theory computations, and carry out the automated computations in parallel. Such automated effective field theory computations would be most useful to obtain higher order post-Newtonian corrections. We compare our Hamiltonian to the ADM Hamiltonian, and arrive at a complete agreement between the ADM and effective field theory results. We provide complete gauge invariant relations among the binding energy, angular momentum, and orbital frequency of an inspiralling binary with generic compact spinning components to third and a half post-Newtonian order. The derivation presented here is essential to obtain further higher order post-Newtonian corrections, and to reach the accuracy level required for the successful detection of gravitational radiation.
