Horn conditions for quiver subrepresentations and the moment map

We give inductive conditions that characterize the Schubert positions of subrepresentations of a general quiver representation. Our results generalize Belkale's criterion for the intersection of Schubert varieties in Grassmannians and refine Schofield's characterization of the dimension vectors of general subrepresentations. This implies Horn type inequalities for the moment cone associated to the linear representation of the group $G=\prod_x \operatorname{GL}(n_x)$ associated to a quiver and a dimension vector $\mathbf n=(n_x)$.

Tensor product of holomorphic discrete series representations of U(p,q) and quivers

As shown by P-E Paradan, the set of orbits contained in the sum of two holomorphic orbits in the Lie algebra of U(p,q) is determined by a set of inequalities similar to the Horn inequalities for the sum of conjugacy classes of two Hermitian matrices. We give another proof of these inequalities using representations of quivers. We also discuss the implications of these inequalities for the decomposition of tensor products of representations of the holomorphic discrete series.

Moment cone membership for quivers in strongly polynomial time

In this note we observe that membership in moment cones of spaces of quiver representations can be decided in strongly polynomial time, for any acyclic quiver. This generalizes a recent result by Chindris-Collins-Kline for bipartite quivers. Their approach was to construct "multiplicity polytopes" with a geometric realization similar to the Knutson-Tao polytopes for tensor product multiplicities. Here we show that a less geometric but straightforward variant of their construction leads to such a multiplicity polytope for any acyclic quiver. Tardos' strongly polynomial time algorithm for combinatorial linear programming along with the saturation property then implies that moment cone membership can be decided in strongly polynomial time. The analogous question for semi-invariants remains open.

Horn inequalities and quivers

Let G be a complex reductive group acting on a finite-dimensional complex vector space H. Let B be a Borel subgroup of G and let T be the associated torus. The Mumford cone is the polyhedral cone generated by the T-weights of the polynomial functions on H which are semi-invariant under the Borel subgroup. In this article, we determine the inequalities of the Mumford cone in the case of the linear representation associated to a quiver and a dimension vector n=(n_x). We give these inequalities in terms of filtered dimension vectors, and we directly adapt Schofield's argument to inductively determine the dimension vectors of general subrepresentations in the filtered context. In particular, this gives one further proof of the Horn inequalities for tensor products.

Three Ehrhart Quasi-polynomials

Let $P(b)\subset R^d$ be a semi-rational parametric polytope, where $b=(b_j)\in R^N$ is a real multi-parameter. We study intermediate sums of polynomial functions $h(x)$ on $P(b)$, $$ S^L (P(b),h)=\sum_{y}\int_{P(b)\cap (y+L)} h(x) \mathrm dx, $$ where we integrate over the intersections of $P(b)$ with the subspaces parallel to a fixed rational subspace $L$ through all lattice points, and sum the integrals. The purely discrete sum is of course a particular case ($L=0$), so $S^0(P(b), 1)$ counts the integer points in the parametric polytopes. The chambers are the open conical subsets of $R^N$ such that the shape of $P(b)$ does not change when $b$ runs over a chamber. We first prove that on every chamber of $R^N$, $S^L (P(b),h)$ is given by a quasi-polynomial function of $b\in R^N$. A key point of our paper is an analysis of the interplay between two notions of degree on quasi-polynomials: the usual polynomial degree and a filtration, called the local degree. Then, for a fixed $k\leq d$, we consider a particular linear combination of such intermediate weighted sums, which was introduced by Barvinok in order to compute efficiently the $k+1$ highest coefficients of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial which gives the number of points of a dilated rational polytope. Thus, for each chamber, we obtain a quasi-polynomial function of $b$, which we call Barvinok's patched quasi-polynomial (at codimension level $k$). Finally, for each chamber, we introduce a new quasi-polynomial function of $b$, the cone-by-cone patched quasi-polynomial (at codimension level $k$), defined in a refined way by linear combinations of intermediate generating functions for the cones at vertices of $P(b)$. We prove that both patched quasi-polynomials agree with the discrete weighted sum $b\mapsto S^0(P(b),h)$ in the terms corresponding to the $k+1$ highest polynomial degrees.

The Horn inequalities from a geometric point of view

We give an exposition of the Horn inequalities and their triple role characterizing tensor product invariants, eigenvalues of sums of Hermitian matrices, and intersections of Schubert varieties. We follow Belkale's geometric method, but assume only basic representation theory and algebraic geometry, aiming for self-contained, concrete proofs. In particular, we do not assume the Littlewood-Richardson rule nor an a priori relation between intersections of Schubert cells and tensor product invariants. Our motivation is largely pedagogical, but the desire for concrete approaches is also motivated by current research in computational complexity theory and effective algorithms.

Computation of Dilated Kronecker Coefficients

The computation of Kronecker coefficients is a challenging problem with a variety of applications. In this paper we present an approach based on methods from symplectic geometry and residue calculus. We outline a general algorithm for the problem and then illustrate its effectiveness in several interesting examples. Significantly, our algorithm does not only compute individual Kronecker coefficients, but also symbolic formulas that are valid on an entire polyhedral chamber. As a byproduct, we are able to compute several Hilbert series.

Formal equivariant $\hat A$ class, splines and multiplicities of the index of transversally elliptic operators

Let G be a connected compact Lie group acting on a manifold M and let D be a transversally elliptic operator on M. The multiplicity of the index of D is a function on the set of irreducible representations of G. Let T be a maximal torus of G with Lie algebra Lie(T). We construct a finite number of piecewise polynomial functions on the dual vector space Lie(T)*, and give a formula for the multiplicity in term of these functions. The main new concept is the formal equivariant $\hat A$ class.

Inequalities for Moment Cones of Finite-Dimensional Representations

We give a general description of the moment cone associated with an arbitrary finite-dimensional unitary representation of a compact, connected Lie group in terms of finitely many linear inequalities. Our method is based on combining differential-geometric arguments with a variant of Ressayre's notion of a dominant pair. As applications, we obtain generalizations of Horn's inequalities to arbitrary representations, new inequalities for the one-body quantum marginal problem in physics, which concerns the asymptotic support of the Kronecker coefficients of the symmetric group, and a geometric interpretation of the Howe-Lee-Tan-Willenbring invariants for the tensor product algebra.

Witten non abelian localization for equivariant K-theory, and the [Q,R]=0 theorem

The purpose of the present paper is two-fold. First, we obtain a non-abelian localization theorem when M is any even dimensional compact manifold : following an idea of E. Witten, we deform an elliptic symbol associated to a Clifford bundle on M with a vector field associated to a moment map. Second, we use this general approach to reprove the [Q,R] = 0 theorem of Meinrenken-Sjamaar in the Hamiltonian case, and we obtain mild generalizations to almost complex manifolds. This non-abelian localization theorem can be used to obtain a geometric description of the multiplicities of the index of general spin^c Dirac operators (see preprint arXiv:1411.7772).

Coefficients of Sylvester's Denumerant

For a given sequence $\mathbfα = [α_1,α_2,\dots,α_{N+1}]$ of $N+1$ positive integers, we consider the combinatorial function $E(\mathbfα)(t)$ that counts the nonnegative integer solutions of the equation $α_1x_1+α_2 x_2+\cdots+α_{N} x_{N}+α_{N+1}x_{N+1}=t$, where the right-hand side $t$ is a varying nonnegative integer. It is well-known that $E(\mathbfα)(t)$ is a quasi-polynomial function in the variable $t$ of degree $N$. In combinatorial number theory this function is known as Sylvester's denumerant. Our main result is a new algorithm that, for every fixed number $k$, computes in polynomial time the highest $k+1$ coefficients of the quasi-polynomial $E(\mathbfα)(t)$ as step polynomials of $t$ (a simpler and more explicit representation). Our algorithm is a consequence of a nice poset structure on the poles of the associated rational generating function for $E(\mathbfα)(t)$ and the geometric reinterpretation of some rational generating functions in terms of lattice points in polyhedral cones. Our algorithm also uses Barvinok's fundamental fast decomposition of a polyhedral cone into unimodular cones. This paper also presents a simple algorithm to predict the first non-constant coefficient and concludes with a report of several computational experiments using an implementation of our algorithm in LattE integrale. We compare it with various Maple programs for partial or full computation of the denumerant.

Intermediate Sums on Polyhedra II: Bidegree and Poisson Formula

We continue our study of intermediate sums over polyhedra, interpolating between integrals and discrete sums, which were introduced by A. Barvinok [Computing the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational simplex, Math. Comp. 75 (2006), 1449-1466]. By well-known decompositions, it is sufficient to consider the case of affine cones s+c, where s is an arbitrary real vertex and c is a rational polyhedral cone. For a given rational subspace L, we integrate a given polynomial function h over all lattice slices of the affine cone s + c parallel to the subspace L and sum up the integrals. We study these intermediate sums by means of the intermediate generating functions $S^L(s+c)(ξ)$, and expose the bidegree structure in parameters s and $ξ$, which was implicitly used in the algorithms in our papers [Computation of the highest coefficients of weighted Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of rational polyhedra, Found. Comput. Math. 12 (2012), 435-469] and [Intermediate sums on polyhedra: Computation and real Ehrhart theory, Mathematika 59 (2013), 1-22]. The bidegree structure is key to a new proof for the Baldoni--Berline--Vergne approximation theorem for discrete generating functions [Local Euler--Maclaurin expansion of Barvinok valuations and Ehrhart coefficients of rational polytopes, Contemp. Math. 452 (2008), 15-33], using the Fourier analysis with respect to the parameter s and a continuity argument. Our study also enables a forthcoming paper, in which we study intermediate sums over multi-parameter families of polytopes.

Kirillov's formula and Guillemin-Sternberg conjecture

Let G be a connected reductive real Lie group, and H a compact connected subgroup. Harish-Chandra associates to a regular coadjoint admissible orbit M of G some unitary representations of G. Using the character formula for these representations, we show that the multiplicities of the restriction to H can be computed, under a suitable properness assumption, in terms of the fibers of the restriction map from M to the dual of the Lie algebra of H. In particular, this gives an alternate proof of a result of Paradan.

Analytic continuation of a parametric polytope and wall-crossing

We define a set theoretic "analytic continuation" of a polytope defined by inequalities. For the regular values of the parameter, our construction coincides with the parallel transport of polytopes in a mirage introduced by Varchenko. We determine the set-theoretic variation when crossing a wall in the parameter space, and we relate this variation to Paradan's wall-crossing formulas for integrals and discrete sums. As another application, we refine the theorem of Brion on generating functions of polytopes and their cones at vertices. We describe the relation of this work with the equivariant index of a line bundle over a toric variety and Morelli constructible support function.
