Higher derivatives of the end-point map of a linear control system via adapted coordinates

We study the end-point map of a control-linear system in a neighborhood of an arbitrarily chosen trajectory. In particular, we want to calculate the $k$-th order derivative of this map in a given direction. A priori it is a solution of a quite complicated ODE depending on all derivatives of order less or equal $k$. We prove that there exists a special coordinate system adapted to the geometry of the problem, which changes the system of ODEs describing all derivatives of the end-point map up to order $k$ to equations of a control-affine (non-autonomous control-linear) system, with the direction of derivation playing the role of the new control. As an application we study controllability criteria for this system, obtaining first and second-order necessary optimality conditions of sub-Riemannian geodesics. In particular, for the case of an abnormal minimizer we can interpret \emph{Goh conditions} as non-controllability conditions of this control-affine system for $k=2$. We make a hypothesis that for higher $k$'s its non-controllability corresponds to recently obtained higher-order analogs of the Goh conditions [Boarotto, Monti, Palmurella, 2020], [Boarotto, Monti, a Socionovo, 2022].

New second-order optimality conditions in sub-Riemannian Geometry

We study the geometry of the second-order expansion of the extended end-point map for the sub-Riemannian geodesic problem. Translating the geometric reality into equations we derive new second-order necessary optimality conditions in sub-Riemannian Geometry. In particular, we find an ODE for velocity of an abnormal sub-Riemannian geodesics. It allows to divide abnormal minimizers into two classes, which we propose to call 2-normal and 2-abnormal extremals. In the 2-normal case the above ODE completely determines the velocity of a curve, while in the 2-abnormal case the velocity is undetermined at some, or at all points. With some enhancement of the presented results it should be possible to prove the regularity of all 2-normal extremals (the 2-abnormal case seems to require study of higher-order conditions) thus making a step towards solving the problem of smoothness of sub-Riemannian abnormal geodesics. As a by-product we present a new derivation of Goh conditions. We also prove that the assumptions weaker than these used in [Boarotto, Monti, Palmurella, 2020] to derive third-order Goh conditions, imply piece-wise-$C^2$ regularity of an abnormal extremal.

Higher-Order Analogs of Lie Algebroids via Vector Bundle Comorphisms

We introduce the concept of a higher algebroid, generalizing the notions of an algebroid and a higher tangent bundle. Our ideas are based on a description of (Lie) algebroids as vector bundle comorphisms - differential relations of a special kind. In our approach higher algebroids are vector bundle comorphism between graded-linear bundles satisfying natural axioms. We provide natural examples and discuss applications in geometric mechanics.

A comparison of vakonomic and nonholonomic dynamics with applications to non-invariant Chaplygin systems

We study relations between vakonomically and nonholonomically constrained Lagrangian dynamics for the same set of linear constraints. The basic idea is to compare both situations at the level of variational principles, not equations of motion as has been done so far. The method seems to be quite powerful and effective. In particular, it allows to derive, interpret and generalize many known results on non-Abelian Chaplygin systems. We apply it also to a class of systems on Lie groups with a left-invariant constraints distribution. Concrete examples of the unicycle in a potential field, the two-wheeled carriage and the generalized Heisenberg system are discussed.

Prolongations vs. Tulczyjew triples in Geometric Mechanics

In the scientific literature there are basically two schools of formulating Lagrangian (or Hamiltonian) mechanics in the (Lie) algebroid setting: in terms of prolongations and in terms of Tulczyjew triples. Despite the fact that in both approaches we describe the same phenomena, so far no comparison between prolongations and Tulczyjew triples was made. In this note we aim to fill this gap. More precisely, we will strip the prolongation approach to uncover the Tulczyjew triple reality hidden inside, thus proving that the latter approach is a more basic one.

Why are normal sub-Riemannian extremals locally minimizing?

It is well-known that normal extremals in sub-Riemannian geometry are curves which locally minimize the energy functional. Most proofs of this fact do not make, however, an explicit use of relations between local optimality and the geometry of the problem. In this paper, we provide a new proof of that classical result, which gives insight into direct geometric reasons of local optimality. Also the relation of the regularity of normal extremals with their optimality becomes apparent in our approach.

Duality for graded manifolds

We study the notion of duality in the context of graded manifolds. For graded bundles, somehow like in the case of Gelfand representation and the duality: points vs. functions, we obtain natural dual objects which belongs to a different category than the initial ones, namely graded polynomial (co)algebra bundles and free graded Weil (co)algebra bundles. Our results are then applied to obtain elegant characterizations of double vector bundles and graded bundles of degree 2. All these results have their supergeometric counterparts. For instance, we give a simple proof of a nice characterisation of $N$-manifolds of degree 2, announced in the literature.

Prototypes of higher algebroids with applications to variational calculus

Reductions of higher tangent bundles of Lie groupoids provide natural examples of geometric structures which we would like to call higher algebroids. Such objects can be also constructed abstractly starting from an arbitrary almost Lie algebroid. A higher algebroid is, in principle, a graded bundle equipped with a differential relation of special kind (a Zakrzewski morphism). In the paper we investigate basic properties of higher algebroids and show some applications. Namely, we develop a geometric framework for variational calculus on higher algebroids (including both forces and momenta). Such a formalism covers simultaneously variational problems on higher tangent bundles, first-order problems on algebroids and higher-order problems reduced by symmetries.
