Degeneracy graph determinants and higher-dimensional Young diagrams

Kemp and Ramgoolam proposed a basis of monomials for a commutative semisimple algebra with generators \(C_1,\ldots, C_L\), constructed from a degeneracy graph which records how the eigenspaces of \( C_1\) are successively split by \( C_2,\ldots, C_L\). They showed that the basis property is equivalent to the non-vanishing of the determinant of the matrix of values of these monomials on the projector basis, and conjectured a factorised formula for this determinant, as a product of powers of eigenvalue differences. We prove this formula for any number of generators. The proof uses graph analogues of Newton polynomials. Their evaluation matrix is not triangular in general, but expanding the rows of the children of each node of the penultimate layer in a Newton basis of their eigenvalues makes it block triangular, with diagonal blocks given by smaller degeneracy graphs in which the final layer is removed. The formula then follows by induction on the number of layers. We show that the exponents in the determinant are overlap volumes of higher-dimensional Young diagrams attached to the nodes of the graph: intervals, ordinary Young diagrams, plane partitions and their higher analogues. Finally, the block triangular structure gives an explicit recursive inversion of the evaluation matrix, expressing the projectors in the monomial basis.

The Power of Power-of-SWAP: Postselected Quantum Computation with the Exchange Interaction

We introduce Exchange Quantum Polynomial Time (XQP) circuits, which comprise quantum computation using only computational basis SPAM and the isotropic Heisenberg exchange interaction. Structurally, this restricted model captures decoherence-free subspace computation without access to singlet states. We prove that XQP, as well as its constrained family consisting solely of $\sqrt{\mathrm{SWAP}}$ gates, is universal for quantum computation under polynomial overheads in circuit depth and size. This establishes the universality of the $\sqrt{\mathrm{SWAP}}$ gate on its own under a logical encoding of qubits. We further prove that circuits generated by $\sqrt{\mathrm{SWAP}}$ gates are semi-universal, and thus generate $t$-designs for the uniform distribution over SU(2)-invariant unitaries. Finally, we study additional properties of the XQP model, including its relation to the six-vertex and Potts model in statistical physics. Our findings suggest that XQP circuits are naturally suited to near-term hardware and provide a simple platform for experimental demonstrations of quantum advantage.

Exponential de Finetti Theorems for Fermionic Gaussian States

We prove an exponential variant of the Gaussian de Finetti theorem: the subsystems of permutation-invariant, free-fermionic Gaussian states are well approximated by convex combinations of almost-i.i.d. states that are Gaussian on subsets of their parts. Our result provides an error bound between the original state and its approximants that decays exponentially in the number of unconstrained parts, becoming super-exponential when the subsystem under consideration is small. The dependence of our bound on the local Hilbert space dimension is polylogarithmic, giving an exponential improvement over the standard de Finetti theorem of [Nat. Phys. 3, 645-649]. Previous works considered Gaussian-symmetric states, which are supported on the trivial irrep of the tensor matchgate representation. We extend these results to the broader class of Gaussian-invariant states, which contains, for example, i.i.d. copies of single-replica mixed Gaussian states. We show that Gaussian-invariant states are precisely the partial traces of Gaussian-symmetric states on locally enlarged replicas and always admit a purification into a larger Gaussian-symmetric state. As an application, we derive explicit convergence bounds for a hierarchy of convex relaxations of polynomial optimisation over fermionic Gaussian states. For variational energy minimisation, the hierarchy gives lower bounds converging to the global Gaussian minimum. Combined with upper bounds from Gaussian trial states, these bounds quantify how far a variational calculation can be from the best energy attainable within the Gaussian family.

Two-body control of noiseless subsystems with mixed $SU(3)$ representations lifts teleportation above the classical fidelity limit

Collective noise can leave degrees of freedom unaffected, allowing them to store quantum information. Processing this information also requires physically available logical gates. We consider $r$ fundamental qutrits transforming under $U\in SU(3)$ and $s$ dual qutrits transforming under its complex conjugate $\overline U$, with collective action $R_{r,s}(U)=U^{\otimes r}\otimes\overline U^{\otimes s}$. Using the image of the walled Brauer algebra and Lie-algebra arguments, we show that adjacent exchanges within each qutrit type and one singlet-projector interaction between the two types generate any independently chosen family of special unitary gates on the noiseless subsystems by a finite pulse sequence, for every $r,s\geq1$. This establishes semi-universality of this system. We illustrate the result with a numerically optimised sequence of 24 pulses for three fundamental qutrits and one dual qutrit. We then use the encoding and available logical corrections for qutrit teleportation under correlated Weyl noise. Under explicit assumptions on channel composition and which trials are retained, and allowing for baseline implementation errors, we identify noise ranges in which encoded teleportation exceeds the classical fidelity bound of $1/2$, while the unencoded teleportation channel is entanglement breaking. We analyse fidelity on accepted trials separately from the transmission costs of the additional physical qutrits.

Optimal physical approximations of pure-state cloning and transposition are complementary channels

State cloning and state transposition are fundamental transformations that, despite being desirable, cannot be perfectly realised as a consequence of two distinct requirements of quantum theory: cloning is forbidden by linearity, while transposition is ruled out by complete positivity. In this work, we show that, in spite of these disparate conceptual restrictions, the best physically allowed realisation of both transformations arises from a single physical process described by an isometry, which simultaneously implements their best possible approximations. This complementary relation allows us to determine the exact quantum and private classical capacities of the universal symmetric $N\to N+K$ cloning channel in the fully general multicopy qudit setting, thereby closing the remaining gap in the quantum capacity problem for universal cloning. We provide an explicit circuit that simultaneously implements optimal pure-state $N\to K$ transposition and optimal $N\to N+K$ symmetric cloning, both attaining the same fidelity. Additionally, we prove that the optimal $N\to K$ pure-state transposition channel is unique and realised by an estimation strategy. We also obtain the optimal mixed-state $N\to 1$ transposition, and discuss its differences from its pure-state analogue.

Asymmetric quantum cloning on orthogonal orbits and four-mode fermionic states

In this work, we study asymmetric $(1\to2)$ quantum cloning for pure states belonging to orbits generated by the orthogonal group. For every dimension $(d\geq3)$, we determine the full region of achievable pairs of average single-copy fidelities. Using orthogonal covariance and the Brauer algebra, we reduce the optimization over all CPTP maps to a finite-dimensional spectral problem and construct explicit optimal cloning channels. We then apply the general results to four-mode fermionic states in the even-parity sector. Using triality, we identify the fixed-concurrence fermionic families with the orthogonal orbits considered in the first part of the paper. In particular, for pure Gaussian states we show that the symmetric locally optimal cloner is unique. We also compare local and global cloning and find that the channel optimal for the joint two-copy fidelity is different from the one optimal for the single-copy fidelities. Finally, we show that the locally optimal cloner cannot be implemented using only operations which preserve fermionic Gaussian states.

Limitations on Joint Coherence Transfer in Quantum Thermodynamics

Coherences between different energy levels are strongly constrained by thermodynamics. Here we ask a related question: if several coherence transfers can be optimized separately, can they also be optimized simultaneously by the same thermodynamic process? We show that this is in general a compatibility problem. Using an energy-resolved Stinespring representation of thermal operations, we express elementary coherence-transfer amplitudes as inner products of bath-weighted vectors associated with total-energy shells. Saturation of the corresponding Cauchy--Schwarz bounds requires these vectors to be collinear. Since all transfers have to arise from the same energy-preserving system--bath unitary, such saturation conditions cannot in general be imposed independently. Trace and Gibbs preservation lead to additional phase-closure conditions and to polygon inequalities that can rule out simultaneous saturation for fixed population-transfer data. We complement these analytic results with a rigorous computer-assisted semidefinite-program analysis. For the mixed-degenerate Hamiltonian \(H=\operatorname{diag}(0,1,1,3)\), machine-certified primal and dual bounds show that no covariant Gibbs-preserving channel can simultaneously attain three individually optimal directional coherence transfers. Since every thermal operation is covariant and Gibbs preserving, the same triple of \(\CGP\)-optimal values cannot be attained by a thermal operation. We also analyze auxiliary Choi-sector Gram matrices for mixed-degenerate ladders. Under specified directional rank assumptions, positivity imposes range-inclusion conditions, from which we obtain conditional non-genericity statements for physical joint saturation.

Port-based teleportation under pure-dephasing decoherence

We study deterministic port based teleportation in the presence of noise affecting both the entangled resource state and the measurement process. We focus on a physically motivated model in which each Bell pair constituting the resource interacts with an identical local environment, corresponding to independently distributed entangled links. Two noisy scenarios are analyzed: one with decoherence acting solely on the resource state and ideal measurements, and another with noisy, noise adapted measurements optimised for the given noise model. In the first case, we derive an analytical lower bound and later a closed-form expression for the entanglement fidelity of the teleportation channel and analyze its asymptotic behaviour. In the second, we combine semi analytical and numerical methods. Surprisingly, we find that noise-adapted measurements perform worse than the noiseless ones. To connect the abstract noise description with microscopic physics, we embed the protocol in a spin boson model and investigate the influence of bath memory and temperature on the teleportation fidelity, highlighting qualitative differences between different environments.

Simple harmonic oscillators from non-semisimple walled Brauer algebras

Walled Brauer algebras $B_N ( m , n ) $ illuminate the combinatorics of mixed tensor representations of $U(N)$, with $m$ copies of the fundamental and $n$ copies of the anti-fundamental representation. They lie at the intersection of research in representation theory, AdS/CFT and quantum information theory. They have been used to study of correlators in multi-matrix models motivated by brane-anti-brane physics in AdS/CFT. They have been applied in computing and optimising fidelities of port-based quantum teleportation. There is a large $N$ regime, specifically $ N \ge (m+n)$ where the algebras are semi-simple and their representation theory more tractable. There are known combinatorial formulae for dimensions of irreducible representations and associated reduction multiplicities. The large $N$ regime has a stability property whereby these formulae are independent of $N$. In this paper we initiate a systematic study of the combinatorics in the non-semisimple regime of $ N = m +n - l $, with positive $l$. We introduce restricted Bratteli diagrams (RBD) which are useful as an instrument to process known data from the large $N$ regime to calculate representation theory data in the non-semisimple regime. We identify within the non-semisimple regime, a region of $(m,n)$-stability, where $ \min ( m, n ) \ge ( 2l -3) $ and the RBD take a stable form depending on $l$ only and not the choice of $ m,n$ within the region. In this regime, several aspects of the combinatorics of the RBD are controlled by a universal partition function for an infinite tower of simple harmonic oscillators closely related, but not identical, to the partition function of 2D non-chiral free scalar field theory.

Oscillators from non-semisimple walled Brauer algebras

The walled Brauer algebras $B_N(m,n)$ govern Schur--Weyl duality for unitary groups $U(N)$ acting on mixed tensor spaces $V_N^{\otimes m}\otimes \overline{V}_N^{\otimes n}$ and play an important role in applications ranging from AdS/CFT to quantum information theory. In the stable regime $N\ge m+n$ the algebra is semisimple and its representation theory is well understood. For $N<m+n$, however, $B_N(m,n)$ becomes non-semisimple. The representation of the algebra on tensor space has a non-trivial kernel and the corresponding quotient algebra is semisimple, with representation dimensions differing from those in the stable regime. We introduce \emph{restricted Bratteli diagrams}, obtained by modifying the standard Bratteli diagrams for $B_N(m,n)$. This construction provides a systematic way to use representation-theoretic data from the stable regime to compute the dimension modifications arising in the non-semisimple regime. In the regime $N=m+n-l$, with $l$ small compared to $m,n$, we show that the restricted diagrams exhibit a stability property and enable an efficient counting of the paths responsible for these dimension corrections. Remarkably, the resulting generating functions are governed by the partition function of an infinite tower of simple harmonic oscillators. We briefly discuss implications for the construction of orthogonal bases of matrix invariants in gauge theory and related applications in quantum information theory.

Multicopy quantum state teleportation with application to storage and retrieval of quantum programs

This work considers a teleportation task for Alice and Bob in a scenario where Bob cannot perform corrections. In particular, we analyse the task of \textit{multicopy state teleportation}, where Alice has $k$ identical copies of an arbitrary unknown $d$-dimensional qudit state $\vertψ\rangle$ to teleport a single copy of $\vertψ\rangle$ to Bob using a maximally entangled two-qudit state shared between Alice and Bob without Bob's correction. Alice may perform a joint measurement on her half of the entangled state and the $k$ copies of $\vertψ\rangle$. We prove that the maximal probability of success for teleporting the exact state $\vertψ\rangle$ to Bob is $p(d,k)=\frac{k}{d(k-1+d)}$ and present an explicit protocol to attain this performance. Then, by utilising $k$ copies of an arbitrary target state $\vertψ\rangle$, we show how the multicopy state teleportation protocol can be employed to enhance the success probability of storage and retrieval of quantum programs, which aims to universally retrieve the action of an arbitrary quantum channel that is stored in a state. Our proofs make use of group representation theory methods, which may find applications beyond the problems addressed in this work.

One-to-One Correspondence between Deterministic Port-Based Teleportation and Unitary Estimation

Port-based teleportation is a variant of quantum teleportation, where the receiver can choose one of the ports in his part of the entangled state shared with the sender, but cannot apply other recovery operations. We show that the optimal fidelity of deterministic port-based teleportation (dPBT) using $N=n+1$ ports to teleport a $d$-dimensional state is equivalent to the optimal fidelity of $d$-dimensional unitary estimation using $n$ calls of the input unitary operation. From any given dPBT, we can explicitly construct the corresponding unitary estimation protocol achieving the same optimal fidelity, and vice versa. Using the obtained one-to-one correspondence between dPBT and unitary estimation, we derive the asymptotic optimal fidelity of port-based teleportation given by $1-O(d^4)N^{-2}\leq F \leq 1-Ω(d^4)N^{-2}$, which improves the previously known result given by $1-O(d^5)N^{-2} \leq F \leq 1-Ω(d^2) N^{-2}$. We also show that the optimal fidelity of unitary estimation for the case $n\leq d-1$ is $F = {n+1 \over d^2}$, and this fidelity is equal to the optimal fidelity of unitary inversion with $n\leq d-1$ calls of the input unitary operation even if we allow indefinite causal order among the calls.

Iterative construction of $\mathfrak{S}_p \times \mathfrak{S}_p$ group-adapted irreducible matrix units for the walled Brauer algebra

In this work, we present an algorithmic treatment of the representation theory of the algebra of partially transposed permutation operators, denoted by $\mathcal{A}^d_{p,p}$, which is a matrix representation of the abstract walled Brauer algebra. We provide an explicit and fully developed framework for constructing irreducible matrix units within the algebra. In contrast to the established earlier Gelfand-Tsetlin type constructions, the presented matrix units are adapted to the action of the subalgebra $\mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_p] \times \mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_p]$, where $\mathfrak{S}_p$ is the symmetric group. What is more, the basis is constructed in such a way that it produces the decomposition of the algebra into a direct sum of ideals, in contrast to its nested structure considered before. The decomposition of this kind has not been considered before in full generality. Our method reveals a recursive scheme for generating irreducible matrix units in all ideals of $\mathcal{A}^d_{p,p}$, offering a systematic approach that applies to small system sizes and arbitrary local dimensions. We apply the developed formalism to the algebra $\mathcal{A}^d_{2,2}$ and illustrate the algorithm in practice. In addition, using the constructed basis, we proved a novel contraction theorem for the elements from $\mathcal{A}^d_{3,3}$, which is the starting point for further investigations.

Group-Adapted Irreducible Matrix Units for the Walled Brauer Algebra

This paper investigates the representation theory of the algebra of partially transposed permutation operators, $\mathcal{A}^d_{p,p}$, which provides a matrix representation for the abstract walled Brauer algebra. This algebra has recently gained significant attention due to its relevance in quantum information theory, particularly in the efficient quantum circuit implementation of the mixed Schur-Weyl transform. In contrast to previous Gelfand-Tsetlin type approaches, our main technical contribution is the explicit construction of irreducible matrix units in the second-highest ideal that are group-adapted to the action of $\mathbb{C}[S_p]\times \mathbb{C}[S_p]$ subalgebra, where $S_p$ is the symmetric group. This approach suggests a recursive method for constructing irreducible matrix units in the remaining ideals of the algebra. The framework is general and applies to systems with arbitrary numbers of components and local dimensions. In addition, we present a complementary construction method based on tensor networks of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of the unitary group. This approach enables the construction of all group-adapted irreducible matrix units, but requires knowledge of certain Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. This method can be successfully applied for a reasonably small number of particles with the support of dedicated software. The obtained results are applied to a special class of operators motivated by the mathematical formalism appearing in all variants of the port-based teleportation protocols through the mixed Schur-Weyl duality. We demonstrate that the given irreducible matrix units are, in fact, eigenoperators for the considered class.

Entanglement recycling in two-step port-based teleportation

A protocol involving the repetitive (twofold, to be precise) application of PBT protocol to the same resource is studied. The quantities characterizing the resulting protocol, so-called \textit{two-step PBT}, namely \textit{enatnglement fidelity} and \textit{success probability} are provided for two scenarios, relying on application of pretty-good measurement, i.e. deterministic and probabilistic PBT with non-EPR resource. This results show that two-step PBT is an accurate protocol, provided the resource is sufficiently large. In particular, the deterministic two-step PBT obtains fidelity that is remarkably close to the optimal MPBT fidelity for teleportation of two quantum states. Additionally, the \textit{recycling fidelity}, i.e. the quantity characterizing the degradation of the resource state is calculated for repetitive application of probabilistic protocol, for both EPR and optimized resource, showing that entanglement recycling with two-step PBT is possible in the former case as well.

New constructive counterexamples to additivity of minimum output Rényi p-entropy of quantum channels

In this paper, we present new families of quantum channels for which corresponding minimum output Rényi $p$-entropy is not additive. Our manuscript is motivated by the results of Grudka et al., J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 43 425304 and we focus on channels characterized by both extensions and subspaces of the antisymmetric subspace in $\mathbb{C}^d \otimes \mathbb{C}^d$, which exhibit additivity breaking for $p>2$.

Optimal universal quantum circuits for unitary complex conjugation

Let $U_d$ be a unitary operator representing an arbitrary $d$-dimensional unitary quantum operation. This work presents optimal quantum circuits for transforming a number $k$ of calls of $U_d$ into its complex conjugate $\bar{U_d}$. Our circuits admit a parallel implementation and are proven to be optimal for any $k$ and $d$ with an average fidelity of $\left\langle{F}\right\rangle =\frac{k+1}{d(d-k)}$. Optimality is shown for average fidelity, robustness to noise, and other standard figures of merit. This extends previous works which considered the scenario of a single call ($k=1$) of the operation $U_d$, and the special case of $k=d-1$ calls. We then show that our results encompass optimal transformations from $k$ calls of $U_d$ to $f(U_d)$ for any arbitrary homomorphism $f$ from the group of $d$-dimensional unitary operators to itself, since complex conjugation is the only non-trivial automorphisms on the group of unitary operators. Finally, we apply our optimal complex conjugation implementation to design a probabilistic circuit for reversing arbitrary quantum evolutions.

From port-based teleportation to Frobenius reciprocity theorem: partially reduced irreducible representations and their applications

In this paper, we present the connection of two concepts as induced representation and partially reduced irreducible representations (PRIR) appear in the context of port-based teleportation protocols. Namely, for a given finite group $G$ with arbitrary subgroup $H$, we consider a particular case of matrix irreducible representations, whose restriction to the subgroup $H$, as a matrix representation of $H$, is completely reduced to diagonal block form with an irreducible representation of $H$ in the blocks. The basic properties of such representations are given. Then as an application of this concept, we show that the spectrum of the port-based teleportation operator acting on $n$ systems is connected in a very simple way with the spectrum of the corresponding Jucys-Murphy operator for the symmetric group $S(n-1)\subset S(n)$. This shows on the technical level relation between teleporation and one of the basic objects from the point of view of the representation theory of the symmetric group. This shows a deep connection between the central object describing properties of deterministic PBT schemes and objects appearing naturally in the abstract representation theory of the symmetric group. In particular, we present a new expression for the eigenvalues of the Jucys-Murphy operators based on the irreducible characters of the symmetric group. As an additional but not trivial result, we give also purely matrix proof of the Frobenius reciprocity theorem for characters with explicit construction of the unitary matrix that realizes the reduction of the natural basis of induced representation to the reduced one.
