Mass Production of 2023 KMTNet Microlensing Planets. III: Three Planets from the Subprime Field

To complete the analysis of the 2023 KMTNet subprime-field microlensing planetary events identified by its AlertFinder system, we present the analysis of six events, KMT-2023-BLG-(1810, 0084, 1118, 0584, 1697, 2218). We find that the first three events are securely confirmed as planetary, with inferred mass ratios of $\log q \sim -1.9$, $-2.0$, and $-2.6$, respectively. The remaining three events exhibit the well-known degeneracy between binary-lens/single-source (2L1S) and single-lens/binary-source (1L2S) models, and two of these also admit viable stellar binary solutions. A Bayesian analysis indicates that the companions in the confirmed planetary events are likely either super-Jupiters orbiting beyond the snow line of M- or K-dwarf hosts or, for two degenerate solutions of KMT-2023-BLG-1118, Saturn-mass planets orbiting late-type M dwarfs. To date, the 2023 KMTNet sample contains 25 unambiguous planetary events, and its mass-ratio distribution is consistent with that of the KMTNet planetary sample from 2016--2019.

Scaling properties of net-baryon number fluctuations at the deconfinement critical point

We investigate the critical behavior of the first four cumulants of the net-baryon number near the deconfinement critical point in QCD in the limit of heavy quarks. By connecting baryon-number fluctuations to Polyakov loop susceptibilities, we analyze their mean-field scaling properties at zero and non-zero baryon chemical potentials. In the mean-field approximation we derive critical exponents via the Landau theory and validate them through explicit numerical calculations in an effective Polyakov loop model. Using a Ginzburg-Landau criterion as a diagnostic of beyond-mean-field effects, we estimate the size of the critical region and find that it shrinks with increasing baryon density. By utilizing the exact scaling function in the 3D Ising model, we estimate critical exponents beyond the mean-field approximation.

Challenges in locating the QCD critical point via constant entropy density contours

A new method was proposed recently to investigate the location of the putative critical point of strongly interacting matter, governed by quantum chromodynamics. By approximating contours of constant entropy density at finite baryon chemical potential, the conditions for the existence of a critical point are solved. In this work, we analyze this method in the hadron resonance gas and Nambu--Jona-Lasinio models. We demonstrate that the prediction of the critical point in the HRG model is solely due to mesonic and baryonic degrees of freedom, and thus is not necessarily a signal of a critical point. We argue that such an expansion leads to a physically meaningful prediction only when applied near the critical point.

Magnetic effects in the Hadron Resonance Gas

We discuss the modeling of the hadronic phase of QCD at finite magnetic field in the framework of hadron resonance gas (HRG). We focus on the statistical description of particle yields that include contribution from resonance decays. We demonstrate that the swift increase in the number of protons with magnetic field predicted in the HRG is due to the ill-defined description of higher-spin states. We discuss fluctuations of conserved charges and show that at present the qualitative comparison of the model predictions with the Lattice QCD data should be treated with care. We also discuss the principle of detailed balance which allows to study the magnetic field dependence of neutral resonances.

Influence of dynamical screening of four-quarks interaction on the chiral phase diagram

We investigate the effect of screening of the four-quarks contact interactions by the ring diagram at finite temperature and density in an effective chiral model inspired by QCD in the Coulomb gauge. As a consequence, a medium-dependent coupling naturally emerges which, in a class of chiral models, brings the chiral crossover temperature down to the value calculated in LQCD at low net-baryon density. Furthermore, it implies a stronger divergence of the chiral susceptibility at the critical point compared to the mean-field dynamics. At vanishing temperature, however, the transition sets in at unphysically small chemical potential, indicating a need for additional effects to compensate for the screening strength. We discuss the properties of an effective potential for a class of models described by momentum-independent gap equations. In particular, we introduce the method to construct an approximate effective potential from the gap equations to determine the location of the first-order phase transition.

Driving chiral phase transition with ring diagram

We study the dressing of four-quark interaction by the ring diagram, and its feeding back to the quark gap equation, in an effective chiral quark model. Implementing such an in-medium coupling naturally reduces the chiral transition temperature in a class of chiral models, and is capable of generating the inverse magnetic catalysis at finite temperatures. We also demonstrate the important role of confining forces, via the Polyakov loop, in a positive feedback mechanism which reinforces the inverse magnetic catalysis.

Impact of the underlying O(4) criticality on net-proton number fluctuations

We discuss the beam-energy dependence of ratios of the first four cumulants of the net-proton number, calculated using a phenomenologically motivated model in which critical mode fluctuations couple to protons and anti-protons. The model takes into account an impact of the underlying $O(4)$ criticality on the QCD phase diagram in the presence of a $Z(2)$ critical point. This allows us to capture qualitatively both the monotonic behavior of the lowest-order ratio and the non-monotonic behavior of higher-order ratios which are seen in the experimental data from the STAR Collaboration. We also discuss the dependence of our results on the coupling strength between the critical mode and the protons as well as the location of the critical point.

Net-proton number fluctuations in the presence of the QCD critical point

Event-by-event fluctuations of the net-proton number studied in heavy-ion collisions provide an important means in the search for the conjectured critical end point (CP) in the QCD phase diagram. We propose a phenomenological model in which the fluctuations of the chiral critical mode couple to protons and anti-protons. This allows us to study the behavior of the net-proton number fluctuations in the presence of the CP. Calculating the net-proton number cumulants, $C_n$ with n=1,2,3,4, along the phenomenological freeze-out line we show that the ratio of variance and mean $C_2/C_1$, as well as kurtosis $C_4/C_2$ resemble qualitative properties observed in data in heavy-ion collisions as a function of beam energy obtained by the STAR Collaboration at RHIC. In particular, the non-monotonic structure of the kurtosis and smooth change of the $C_2/C_1$ ratio with beam energy could be due to the CP located near the freeze-out line. The skewness, however, exhibits properties that are in contrast to the criticality expected due to the CP. The dependence of our results on the model parameters and the proximity of the chemical freeze-out to the critical point are also discussed.

Searching for the QCD critical point with net-proton number fluctuations

Net-proton number fluctuations can be measured experimentally and hence provide a source of important information about the matter created during relativistic heavy ion collisions. Particularly, they may give us clues about the conjectured QCD critical point. In this work the beam-energy dependence of ratios of the first four cumulants of the net-proton number is discussed. These quantities are calculated using a phenomenologically motivated model in which critical mode fluctuations couple to protons and anti-protons. Our model qualitatively captures both the monotonic behavior of the lowest-order ratio as well as the non-monotonic behavior of higher-order ratios, as seen in the experimental data from the STAR Collaboration. We also discuss the dependence of our results on the coupling strength and the location of the critical point.

Polyakov loop fluctuations in the presence of external fields

We study the implications of the spontaneous and explicit Z(3) center symmetry breaking for the Polyakov loop susceptibilities. To this end, ratios of the susceptibilities of the real and imaginary parts, as well as of the modulus of the Polyakov loop are computed within an effective model using a color group integration scheme. We show that the essential features of the lattice QCD results of these ratios can be successfully captured by the effective approach. Furthermore we discuss a novel scaling relation in one of these ratios involving the explicit breaking field, volume, and temperature.
