Incomplete Tambara functors

For a "genuine" equivariant commutative ring spectrum $R$, $π_0(R)$ admits a rich algebraic structure known as a Tambara functor. This algebraic structure mirrors the structure on $R$ arising from the existence of multiplicative norm maps. Motivated by the surprising fact that Bousfield localization can destroy some of the norm maps, in previous work we studied equivariant commutative ring structures parametrized by $N_\infty$ operads. In a precise sense, these interpolate between "naive" and "genuine" equivariant ring structures. In this paper, we describe the algebraic analogue of $N_\infty$ ring structures. We introduce and study categories of incomplete Tambara functors, described in terms of certain categories of bispans. Incomplete Tambara functors arise as $π_0$ of $N_\infty$ algebras, and interpolate between Green functors and Tambara functors. We classify all incomplete Tambara functors in terms of a basic structural result about polynomial functors. This classification gives a conceptual justification for our prior description of $N_\infty$ operads and also allows us to easily describe the properties of the category of incomplete Tambara functors.

The slice spectral sequence for the $C_{4}$ analog of real $K$-theory

We describe the slice spectral sequence of a 32-periodic $C_{4}$-spectrum $K_{[2]}$ related to the $C_{4}$ norm ${N_{C_{2}}^{C_{4}}MU_{\bf R}}$ of the real cobordism spectrum $MU_{\bf R}$. We will give it as a spectral sequence of Mackey functors converging to the graded Mackey functor $\underline{π}_{*}K_{[2]}$, complete with differentials and exotic extensions in the Mackey functor structure. The slice spectral sequence for the 8-periodic real $K$-theory spectrum $K_{\bf R}$ was first analyzed by Dugger. The $C_{8}$ analog of $K_{[2]}$ is 256-periodic and detects the Kervaire invariant classes $θ_{j}$ in the stable homotopy groups of spheres. A partial analysis of its slice spectral sequence led to the solution to the Kervaire invariant problem, namely the theorem that $θ_{j}$ does not exist for $j\geq 7$.

The Slice Spectral Sequence for certain $RO(C_{p^n})$-graded Suspensions of $H\underline{\mathbb Z}$

We study the slice filtration and associated spectral sequence for a family of $RO(C_{p^{n}})$-graded suspensions of the Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum for the constant Mackey functor $\underline{\mathbb Z}$. Since $H\underline{\mathbb Z}$ is the zero slice of the sphere spectrum, this begins an analysis of how one can describe the slices of a suspension in terms of the original slices.

On the fate of $η^3$ in higher analogues of Real bordism

We show that the cube of the Hopf map $η$ maps to zero under the Hurewicz map for all fixed points of all norms to cyclic $2$-groups of the Landweber-Araki Real bordism spectrum. Using that the slice spectral sequence is a spectral sequence of Mackey functors, we compute the relevant portion of the homotopy groups of these fixed points, showing that multiplication by $4$ annihilates $π_{3}$.

Operadic multiplications in equivariant spectra, norms, and transfers

We study homotopy-coherent commutative multiplicative structures on equivariant spaces and spectra. We define N-infinity operads, equivariant generalizations of E-infinity operads. Algebras in equivariant spectra over an N-infinity operad model homotopically commutative equivariant ring spectra that only admit certain collections of Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norms, determined by the operad. Analogously, algebras in equivariant spaces over an N-infinity operad provide explicit constructions of certain transfers. This characterization yields a conceptual explanation of the structure of equivariant infinite loop spaces. To explain the relationship between norms, transfers, and N-infinity operads, we discuss the general features of these operads, linking their properties to families of finite sets with group actions and analyzing their behavior under norms and geometric fixed points. A surprising consequence of our study is that in stark contract to the classical setting, equivariantly the little disks and linear isometries operads for a general universe $U$ need not determine the same algebras. Our work is motivated by the need to provide a framework to describe the flavors of commutativity seen in recent work of the second author and Hopkins on localization of equivariant commutative ring spectra.

On the non-existence of elements of Kervaire invariant one

We show that Kervaire invariant one elements in the homotopy groups of spheres exist only in dimensions at most 126. By Browder's Theorem, this means that smooth framed manifolds of Kervaire invariant one exist only in dimensions 2, 6, 14, 30, 62, and possibly 126. With the exception of dimension 126 this resolves a longstanding problem in algebraic topology.

On the algebraic K-theory of truncated polynomial algebras in several variables

We consider the algebraic K-theory of a truncated polynomial algebra in several commuting variables, K(k[x_1, ..., x_n]/(x_1^a_1, ..., x_n^a_n)). This naturally leads to a new generalization of the big Witt vectors. If k is a perfect field of positive characteristic we describe the K-theory computation in terms of a cube of these Witt vectors on N^n. If the characteristic of k does not divide any of the a_i we compute the K-groups explicitly. We also compute the K-groups modulo torsion for k=Z. To understand this K-theory spectrum we use the cyclotomic trace map to topological cyclic homology, and write TC(k[x_1, ..., x_n]/(x_1^a_1, ..., x_n^a_n)) as the iterated homotopy cofiber of an n-cube of spectra, each of which is easier to understand. Updated: This is a substantial revision. We corrected several errors in the description of the Witt vectors on a truncation set on N^n and modified the key proofs accordingly. We also replaces several topological statement with purely algebraic ones. Most arguments have been reworked and streamlined.

Equivariant Multiplicative Closure

This paper describes an issue that arises when inverting elements of the homotopy groups of an equivariant commutative ring. Equivariant commutative rings possess an enhanced multiplicative structure arising from the presence of "indexed products" (products indexed by a set with a non-trivial action of the group). The formation of the "multiplicative closure" of a set must be altered in order to accomodate this structure, and the result of localizing an equivariant commutative ring can have an unexpected homotopy type.

The Equivariant Slice Filtration: a Primer

We present an introduction to the equivariant slice filtration. After reviewing the definitions and basic properties, we determine the slice dimension of various families of naturally arising spectra. This leads to an analysis of pullbacks of slices defined on quotient groups, producing new collections of slices. Building on this, we determine the slice tower for the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum associated to a Mackey functor for a cyclic $p$-group. We then relate the Postnikov tower to the slice tower for various spectra. Finally, we pose a few conjectures about the nature of slices and pullbacks.

Homological obstructions to string orientations

We observe that the Poincare duality isomorphism for a string manifold is an isomorphism of modules over the subalgebra A(2) of the modulo 2 Steenrod algebra. In particular, the pattern of the operations Sq^1, Sq^2, and Sq^4 on the cohomology of a string manifold has a symmetry around the middle dimension. We characterize this kind of cohomology operation duality in term of the annihilator of the Thom class of the negative tangent bundle, and in terms of the vanishing of top-degree cohomology operations. We also indicate how the existence of such an operation-preserving duality implies the integrality of certain polynomials in the Pontryagin classes of the manifold.

The 5-local homotopy of $eo_4$

We compute the 5-local cohomology of a 5-local analogue of the Weierstrass Hopf algebroid used to compute $tmf$ homology. We compute the Adams-Novikov differentials in the cohomology, giving the homotopy, V(0)-homology, and V(1)-homology of the putative spectrum $eo_4$. We also link this computation to the homotopy of the higher real $K$-theory spectrum $EO_4$.

The 3-local tmf homology of BSigma_3

In this paper, we introduce a Hopf algebra, developed by the author and Andre Henriques, which is usable in the computation of the tmf homology of a space. As an application, we compute the tmf homology of BSigma_3 in a manner analogous to Mahowald's computation of the ko homology RP^infty.
