Inclusion theorems for the Moyal multiplier algebras of generalized Gelfand-Shilov spaces

We prove that the Moyal multiplier algebras of the generalized Gelfand-Shilov spaces of type $S$ contain Palamodov spaces of type $\mathcal E$ and the inclusion maps are continuous. We also give a direct proof that the Palamodov spaces are algebraically and topologically isomorphic to the strong duals of the spaces of convolutors for the corresponding spaces of type $S$. The obtained results provide an effective way to describe the properties of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in the spaces of type $\mathcal E$.

Integral representations of the star product corresponding to the $s$-ordering of the creation and annihilation operators

A new integral representation is obtained for the star product corresponding to the $s$-ordering of the creation and annihilation operators. This parametric ordering convention introduced by Cahill and Glauber enables one to vary the type of ordering in a continuous way from normal order to antinormal order. Our derivation of the corresponding integral representation is based on using reproducing formulas for analytic and antianalytic functions. We also discuss a different representation whose kernel is a generalized function and compare the properties of this kernel with those of the kernels of another family of star products which are intermediate between the $qp-$ and $pq$-quantization.

Dirac's magnetic monopole and the Kontsevich star product

We examine relationships between various quantization schemes for an electrically charged particle in the field of a magnetic monopole. Quantization maps are defined in invariant geometrical terms, appropriate to the case of nontrivial topology, and are constructed for two operator representations. In the first setting, the quantum operators act on the Hilbert space of sections of a nontrivial complex line bundle associated with the Hopf bundle, whereas the second approach uses instead a quaternionic Hilbert module of sections of a trivial quaternionic line bundle. We show that these two quantizations are naturally related by a bundle morphism and, as a consequence, induce the same phase-space star product. We obtain explicit expressions for the integral kernels of star-products corresponding to various operator orderings and calculate their asymptotic expansions up to the third order in the Planck constant $\hbar$. We also show that the differential form of the magnetic Weyl product corresponding to the symmetric ordering agrees completely with the Kontsevich formula for deformation quantization of Poisson structures and can be represented by Kontsevich's graphs.

Dirac's monopole, quaternions, and the Zassenhaus formula

Starting from the quaternionic quantization scheme proposed by Emch and Jadczyk for describing the motion of a quantum particle in the magnetic monopole field, we derive an algorithm for finding the differential representation of the star product generated by the quaternionic Weyl correspondence on phase-space functions. This procedure is illustrated by the explicit calculation of the star product up to the second order in the Planck constant. Our main tools are an operator analog of the twisted convolution and the Zassenhaus formula for the products of exponentials of noncommuting operators.

Wedge locality and asymptotic commutativity

In this paper, we study twist deformed quantum field theories obtained by combining the Wightman axiomatic approach with the idea of spacetime noncommutativity. We prove that the deformed fields with deformation parameters of opposite sign satisfy the condition of mutual asymptotic commutativity, which was used earlier in nonlocal quantum field theory as a substitute for relative locality. We also present an improved proof of the wedge localization property discovered for the deformed fields by Grosse and Lechner, and we show that the deformation leaves the asymptotic behavior of the vacuum expectation values in spacelike directions substantially unchanged.

Algebras with convergent star products and their representations in Hilbert spaces

We study star product algebras of analytic functions for which the power series defining the products converge absolutely. Such algebras arise naturally in deformation quantization theory and in noncommutative quantum field theory. We consider different star products in a unifying way and present results on the structure and basic properties of these algebras, which are useful for applications. Special attention is given to the Hilbert space representation of the algebras and to the exact description of their corresponding operator algebras.

Twisted convolution and Moyal star product of generalized functions

We consider nuclear function spaces on which the Weyl-Heisenberg group acts continuously and study the basic properties of the twisted convolution product of the functions with the dual space elements. The final theorem characterizes the corresponding algebra of convolution multipliers and shows that it contains all sufficiently rapidly decreasing functionals in the dual space. Consequently, we obtain a general description of the Moyal multiplier algebra of the Fourier-transformed space. The results extend the Weyl symbol calculus beyond the traditional framework of tempered distributions.

Moyal multiplier algebras of the test function spaces of type S

The Gel'fand-Shilov spaces of type S are considered as topological algebras with respect to the Moyal star product and their corresponding algebras of multipliers are defined and investigated. In contrast to the well-studied case of Schwartz's space S, these multipliers are allowed to have nonpolynomial growth or infinite order singularities. The Moyal multiplication is thereby extended to certain classes of ultradistributions, hyperfunctions, and analytic functionals. The main theorem of the paper characterizes those elements of the dual of a given test function space that are the Moyal multipliers of this space. The smallest nontrivial Fourier-invariant space in the scale of S-type spaces is shown to play a special role, because its corresponding Moyal multiplier algebra contains the largest algebra of functions for which the power series defining their star products are absolutely convergent. Furthermore, it contains analogous algebras associated with cone-shaped regions, which can be used to formulate a causality condition in quantum field theory on noncommutative space-time.

Noncommutative deformations of quantum field theories, locality, and causality

We investigate noncommutative deformations of quantum field theories for different star products, particularly emphasizing the locality properties and the regularity of the deformed fields. Using functional analysis methods, we describe the basic structural features of the vacuum expectation values of star-modified products of fields and field commutators. As an alternative to microcausality, we introduce a notion of $θ$-locality, where $θ$ is the noncommutativity parameter. We also analyze the conditions for the convergence and continuity of star products and define the function algebra that is most suitable for the Moyal and Wick-Voros products. This algebra corresponds to the concept of strict deformation quantization and is a useful tool for constructing quantum field theories on a noncommutative space-time.

Reconstruction in quantum field theory with a fundamental length

In this paper, we establish an analog of Wightman's reconstruction theorem for nonlocal quantum field theory with a fundamental length. In our setting, the Wightman generalized functions are defined on test functions analytic in a complex l-neighborhood of the real space and are localizable at scales large compared to l. The causality condition is formulated as continuity of the field commutator in an appropriate topology associated with the light cone. We prove that the relevant function spaces are nuclear and derive the kernel theorems for the corresponding classes of multilinear functionals, which provides the basis for the reconstruction procedure. Special attention is given to the accurate determination of the domain of the reconstructed quantum fields in the Hilbert space of states. We show that the primitive common invariant domain must be suitably extended to implement the (quasi)localizability and causality conditions.

Quantum field theory with a fundamental length: A general mathematical framework

We review and develop a mathematical framework for nonlocal quantum field theory (QFT) with a fundamental length. As an instructive example, we reexamine the normal ordered Gaussian function of a free field and find the primitive analyticity domain of its n-point vacuum expectation values. This domain is smaller than the usual future tube of local QFT, but we prove that in difference variables, it has the same structure of a tube whose base is the (n-1)-fold product of a Lorentz invariant region. It follows that this model satisfies Wightman-type axioms with an exponential high-energy bound which does not depend on n, contrary to the claims in the literature. In our setting, the Wightman generalized functions are defined on test functions analytic in the complex l-neighborhood of the real space, where l is an n-independent constant playing the role of a fundamental length, and the causality condition is formulated with the use of an analogous function space associated with the light cone. In contrast to the scheme proposed by Bruning and Nagamachi [J. Math. Phys. 45 (2004) 2199] in terms of ultra-hyperfunctions, the presented theory obviously becomes local as l tends to zero.

Failure of microcausality in noncommutative field theories

We revisit the question of microcausality violations in quantum field theory on noncommutative spacetime, taking $O(x)=:ϕ\starϕ:(x)$ as a sample observable. Using methods of the theory of distributions, we precisely describe the support properties of the commutator [O(x),O(y)] and prove that, in the case of space-space noncommutativity, it does not vanish at spacelike separation in the noncommuting directions. However, the matrix elements of this commutator exhibit a rapid falloff along an arbitrary spacelike direction irrespective of the type of noncommutativity. We also consider the star commutator for this observable and show that it fails to vanish even at spacelike separation in the commuting directions and completely violates causality. We conclude with a brief discussion about the modified Wightman functions which are vacuum expectation values of the star products of fields at different spacetime points.

Star product algebras of test functions

We prove that the Gelfand-Shilov spaces $S^β_α$ are topological algebras under the Moyal star product if and only if $α\geβ$. These spaces of test functions can be used in quantum field theory on noncommutative spacetime. The star product depends on the noncommutativity parameter continuously in their topology. We also prove that the series expansion of the Moyal product converges absolutely in $S^β_α$ if and only if $β<1/2$.

Noncommutativity and theta-locality

In this paper, we introduce the condition of theta-locality which can be used as a substitute for microcausality in quantum field theory on noncommutative spacetime. This condition is closely related to the asymptotic commutativity which was previously used in nonlocal QFT. Heuristically, it means that the commutator of observables behaves at large spacelike separation like $\exp(-|x-y|^2/θ)$, where $θ$ is the noncommutativity parameter. The rigorous formulation given in the paper implies averaging fields with suitable test functions. We define a test function space which most closely corresponds to the Moyal star product and prove that this space is a topological algebra under the star product. As an example, we consider the simplest normal ordered monomial $:ϕ\starϕ:$ and show that it obeys the theta-locality condition.

Decomposition theorems and kernel theorems for a class of functional spaces

We prove new theorems about properties of generalized functions defined on Gelfand-Shilov spaces $S^β$ with $0\leβ<1$. For each open cone $U\subset\mathbb R^d$ we define a space $S^β(U)$ which is related to $S^β(\mathbb R^d)$ and consists of entire analytic functions rapidly decreasing inside U and having order of growth $\le 1/(1-β)$ outside the cone. Such sheaves of spaces arise naturally in nonlocal quantum field theory, and this motivates our investigation. We prove that the spaces $S^β(U)$ are complete and nuclear and establish a decomposition theorem which implies that every continuous functional defined on $S^β(\mathbb R^d)$ has a unique minimal closed carrier cone in $\mathbb R^d$. We also prove kernel theorems for spaces over open and closed cones and elucidate the relation between the carrier cones of multilinear forms and those of the generalized functions determined by these forms.

Axiomatic formulations of nonlocal and noncommutative field theories

We analyze functional analytic aspects of axiomatic formulations of nonlocal and noncommutative quantum field theories. In particular, we completely clarify the relation between the asymptotic commutativity condition, which ensures the CPT symmetry and the standard spin-statistics relation for nonlocal fields, and the regularity properties of the retarded Green's functions in momentum space that are required for constructing a scattering theory and deriving reduction formulas. This result is based on a relevant Paley-Wiener-Schwartz-type theorem for analytic functionals. We also discuss the possibility of using analytic test functions to extend the Wightman axioms to noncommutative field theory, where the causal structure with the light cone is replaced by that with the light wedge. We explain some essential peculiarities of deriving the CPT and spin-statistics theorems in this enlarged framework.

PCT, spin and statistics, and analytic wave front set

A new, more general derivation of the spin-statistics and PCT theorems is presented. It uses the notion of the analytic wave front set of (ultra)distributions and, in contrast to the usual approach, covers nonlocal quantum fields. The fields are defined as generalized functions with test functions of compact support in momentum space. The vacuum expectation values are thereby admitted to be arbitrarily singular in their space-time dependence. The local commutativity condition is replaced by an asymptotic commutativity condition, which develops generalizations of the microcausality axiom previously proposed.

Two classes of generalized functions used in nonlocal field theory

We elucidate the relation between the two ways of formulating causality in nonlocal quantum field theory: using analytic test functions belonging to the space $S^0$ (which is the Fourier transform of the Schwartz space $\mathcal D$) and using test functions in the Gelfand-Shilov spaces $S^0_α$. We prove that every functional defined on $S^0$ has the same carrier cones as its restrictions to the smaller spaces $S^0_α$. As an application of this result, we derive a Paley-Wiener-Schwartz-type theorem for arbitrarily singular generalized functions of tempered growth and obtain the corresponding extension of Vladimirov's algebra of functions holomorphic on a tubular domain.
