Mass Production of 2023 KMTNet Microlensing Planets. III: Three Planets from the Subprime Field

To complete the analysis of the 2023 KMTNet subprime-field microlensing planetary events identified by its AlertFinder system, we present the analysis of six events, KMT-2023-BLG-(1810, 0084, 1118, 0584, 1697, 2218). We find that the first three events are securely confirmed as planetary, with inferred mass ratios of $\log q \sim -1.9$, $-2.0$, and $-2.6$, respectively. The remaining three events exhibit the well-known degeneracy between binary-lens/single-source (2L1S) and single-lens/binary-source (1L2S) models, and two of these also admit viable stellar binary solutions. A Bayesian analysis indicates that the companions in the confirmed planetary events are likely either super-Jupiters orbiting beyond the snow line of M- or K-dwarf hosts or, for two degenerate solutions of KMT-2023-BLG-1118, Saturn-mass planets orbiting late-type M dwarfs. To date, the 2023 KMTNet sample contains 25 unambiguous planetary events, and its mass-ratio distribution is consistent with that of the KMTNet planetary sample from 2016--2019.

The Frequency and Mass-Ratio Distribution of Binaries in Clusters -- III: Probabilistic Generative Modelling of Six Young Open Clusters

We apply probabilistic generative modelling of colour-magnitude diagrams to six young Galactic open star clusters and determine their mass functions, binary mass-ratio distributions, and the frequencies of binary stars. We find that younger clusters tend to exhibit a higher incidence of binaries than their older counterparts. The mass-ratio distribution is fairly flat for the clusters with one exception that exhibits a sharp increase for $q\gtrsim0.9$. The ratio of the number of cluster binaries for which $q>0.75$ to the number of binaries for which $q>0.5$ (referred to as $FQ_{75}$) ranges from $\sim0.4 - 0.8$. This metric increases with the binary-star frequency of a cluster, but declines with cluster age. This may be due to non-ionizing 3-body dynamical processing of a primordial population of close binaries with initial mass ratios, $q \simeq 1$.

Report of the Topical Group on Physics Beyond the Standard Model at Energy Frontier for Snowmass 2021

This is the Snowmass2021 Energy Frontier (EF) Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) report. It combines the EF topical group reports of EF08 (Model-specific explorations), EF09 (More general explorations), and EF10 (Dark Matter at Colliders). The report includes a general introduction to BSM motivations and the comparative prospects for proposed future experiments for a broad range of potential BSM models and signatures, including compositeness, SUSY, leptoquarks, more general new bosons and fermions, long-lived particles, dark matter, charged-lepton flavor violation, and anomaly detection.

Tachyons as Dark Energy Quanta

I discuss the possibility that dark energy is a scalar field whose quanta are extremely light and very weakly interacting superluminal particles, i.e. tachyons, with purely imaginary mass $m = iΓ$ with $Γ$ real.

A Very Forward Hadron Spectrometer for the LHC and Cosmic Ray Physics

Charged hadron production in hadron-hadron collisions with longitudinal momentum fraction Feynman-x, x_F, between 0.1 and 0.9 has not been measured above square root s = 63 GeV at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. I discuss a way to measure this at the Large Hadron Collider at square root s = 13 TeV, which is 40,000 times higher in equivalent fixed target energy, and important for understanding cosmic ray showers.

NASA ExoPAG Study Analysis Group 11: Preparing for the WFIRST Microlensing Survey

NASA's proposed WFIRST-AFTA mission will discover thousands of exoplanets with separations from the habitable zone out to unbound planets, using the technique of gravitational microlensing. The Study Analysis Group 11 of the NASA Exoplanet Program Analysis Group was convened to explore scientific programs that can be undertaken now, and in the years leading up to WFIRST's launch, in order to maximize the mission's scientific return and to reduce technical and scientific risk. This report presents those findings, which include suggested precursor Hubble Space Telescope observations, a ground-based, NIR microlensing survey, and other programs to develop and deepen community scientific expertise prior to the mission.

Precision proton spectrometers for CMS

We plan to add high precision tracking- and timing-detectors at z = +/- 240 m to CMS to study exclusive processes p + p -- p + X + p at high luminosity. This enables the LHC to be used as a tagged photon-photon collider, with X = l+l- and W+W-, and as a "tagged" gluon-gluon collider (with a spectator gluon) for QCD studies with jets. A second stage at z = 240 m would allow observations of exclusive Higgs boson production.

Exclusive Central pi+pi- production in CDF

Using the Collider Detector at Fermilab, CDF, we have measured exclusive pi+pi- production at sqrt(s) = 900 GeV and 1960 GeV. The pi+pi- pair is central, |y| < 1.0, and there are no other particles detected in |eta| < 5.9. We discuss the mass spectrum, showing f0(980) and f2(1270) resonances, s-dependence, pT-dependence, and angular distributions.

Double Pomeron Exchange: from the ISR to the LHC

I discuss Double Pomeron Exchange processes from their first observation at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings, focusing on glueball searches, through the observations of exclusive chi_c, photon-photon, and di-jets at the Tevatron, to prospects at the LHC for exclusive Higgs boson production.

Exclusive High Mass Di-leptons in CDF

In the Collider Detector at Fermilab, CDF, we have measured central exclusive production, p+pbar --> p+X+pbar, where X is a pair of leptons or photons and nothing else. In this talk I focus on central masses M(X) > 8 GeV/c2. We measured QED production photon+photon --> e+e-,mu+mu- up to M(l+l-) = 75 GeV/c2, and candidates for photoproduction of Upsilons, photon+pomeron --> Y(1S),Y(2S),Y(3S). I report a search for exclusive photoproduction of Z-bosons, and the status of searches for exclusive two-photons: p+pbar --> p+gamma+gamma+pbar. These measurements constrain the cross section sigma(p+p to p+H+p) at the LHC.

Forward Physics with Rapidity Gaps at the LHC

A rapidity gap program with great potential can be realized at the Large Hadron Collider, LHC, by adding a few simple forward shower counters (FSCs) along the beam line on both sides of the main central detectors, such as CMS. Measurements of single diffractive cross sections down to the lowest masses can be made with an efficient level-1 trigger. Exceptionally, the detectors also make feasible the study of Central Diffractive Excitation, and in particular the reaction g + g to g + g, in the color singlet channel, effectively using the LHC as a gluon-gluon collider.
