Super-intuition and correlations with the future in Quantum Consciousness

The role of quantum information is discussed in the framework of Quantum Concept of Consciousness (QCC), based on the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics (Everett interpretation). Within QCC the phenomenon of super-intuition is analyzed, which explains in particular the great scientific insights and realizes a sort of a "mental time machine". The recently expressed opinion that emergence of super-intuition requires transferring quantum information, which is banned by the impossibility of "quantum cloning", is critically considered. It is shown that in fact under QCC the emergence of the phenomenon of super-intuition requires not transferring quantum information, but only correlating various fragments of it. Actual examples of scientific insights that have been documented by prominent scientists, suggest that the marker of the correlation in this case is a strong positive emotion, which can be called cognitive euphoria.

Dynamics-generating semigroups and phenomenology of decoherence

The earlier proposed Dynamics-Generating Approach (DGA) is reviewed and extended. Starting from an arbitrarily chosen group or semigroup which have structure similar to the structure of Galilei group, DGA allows one to construct phenomenological description of dynamics of the corresponding "elementary quantum object" (a particle or non-local object of special type). A class of Galilei-type semigroups, with semigroup of trajectories (parametrized paths) instead of translations, allows one to derive Feynman path integrals in the framework of DGA. The measure of path integrating (exponential of the classic action) is not postulated but derived from the structure of projective semigroup representations. The generalization of DGA suggested in the present paper allows one to derive dynamics of open quantum systems. Specifically, phenomenological description of decoherence and dissipation of a non-relativistic particle is derived from Galilei semigroup.

Quantum features of consciousness, computers and brain

Many people believe that mysterious phenomenon of consciousness may be connected with quantum features of our world. The present author proposed so-called Extended Everett's Concept (EEC) that allowed to explain consciousness and super-consciousness (intuitive knowledge). Brain, according to EEC, is an interface between consciousness and super-consciousness on the one part and body on the other part. Relations between all these components of the human cognitive system are analyzed in the framework of EEC. It is concluded that technical devices improving usage of super-consciousness (intuition) may exist.

Postcorrection and mathematical model of life in Extended Everett's Concept

Extended Everett's Concept (EEC) recently developed by the author to explain the phenomenon of consciousness is considered. A mathematical model is proposed for the principal feature of consciousness assumed in EEC, namely its ability (in the state of sleep, trance or meditation, when the explicit consciousness is disabled) to obtain information from all alternative classical realities (Everett's worlds) and select the favorable realities. To represent this ability, a mathematical operation called postcorrection is introduced, which corrects the present state to guarantee certain characteristics of the future state. Evolution of living matter is thus determined by goals (first of all by the goal of survival) as well as by causes. The resulting theory, in a way symmetrical in time direction, follows from a sort of antropic principle. Possible criteria for postcorrection and corresponding phenomena in the sphere of life are classified. Both individual and collective criteria of survival are considered as well as the criteria providing certain quality of life and those which are irrelevant to the life quality. The phenomena of free will and direct sighting of truth (e.g. scientific insight) are explained in these terms. The problem of artificial intellect and the role of brain look differently in the framework of this theory. Automats may perform intellectual operations, but not postcorrection, therefore artificial intellect but not an artificial life can be created. The brain serves as an interface between the body and consciousness, but the most profound level of consciousness is not a function of brain.

On gravitational-electromagnetic resonance

This is an English translation of the paper M.B.Mensky, in: K.P.Stanyukovich (ed.), "Problems of Theory of Gravity and Elementary Particles", issue 6, Moscow, Atomizdat, 1975, p.181-190 (in Russian). This paper elaborates further the idea (formulated in 1971 by Braginsky and Mensky) of detecting high-frequency gravitational waves by observing resonance action of a gravitational wave on the electromagnetic wave in a closed resonator (waveguide). The phenomenon underlying such a detector was called gravitational-electromagnetic resonance (GER). In the present paper both closed (for example circular) resonator or waveguide and long (for example in the shape of a spiral) waveguide are considered as possible gravitational-wave detectors. High-frequency gravitational-wave detectors are now again actual (see A.M.Cruise and R.M.J.Ingley, Class. Quant. Grav. 22, S479, 2005), but the current literature on this topic does not cover all the issues discussed in the present paper.

Reality in quantum mechanics, Extended Everett Concept, and consciousness

Conceptual problems in quantum mechanics result from the specific quantum concept of reality and require, for their solution, including the observer's consciousness into quantum theory of measurements. Most naturally this is achieved in the framework of Everett's "many-worlds interpretation" of quantum mechanics. According to this interpretation, various classical alternatives are perceived by consciousness separately from each other. In the Extended Everett Concept (EEC) proposed by the present author, the separation of the alternatives is identified with the phenomenon of consciousness. This explains classical character of the alternatives and unusual manifestations of consciousness arising "at the edge of consciousness" (i.e. in sleep or trance) when its access to "other alternative classical realities" (other Everett's worlds) becomes feasible. Because of reversibility of quantum evolution in EEC, all time moments in the quantum world are equivalent while the impression of flow of time appears only in consciousness. If it is assumed that consciousness may influence onto probabilities of alternatives (which is consistent in case of infinitely many Everett's worlds), EEC explains free will, "probabilistic miracles" (observing low-probability events) and decreasing entropy in the sphere of life.

Energy conservation and equivalence principle in General Relativity

The generalized Stokes theorem (connecting integrals of dimensions 3 and 4) is formulated in a curved space-time in terms of paths in Minkowski space (forming Path Group). A covariant integral form of the conservation law for the energy-momentum of matter is then derived in General Relativity. It extends Einstein's equivalence principle on the energy conservation, since it formulates the conservation law for the energy-momentum of matter without explicit including the gravitational field in the formulation.

Universal approach to gravitational thermal effects

A universal scheme for describing gravitational thermal effects is developed as a generalization of Unruh effect. Quasi-Rindler (QR) coordinates are constructed in an arbitrary curved space-time in such a way that the imaginary QR time be periodical. The observer at rest in QR coordinates should experience a thermal effect. Application to de Sitter space-time is considered.

Path Group in gauge theory and gravity

Applications of the Path Group (consisting of classes of continuous curves in Minkowski space-time) to gauge theory and gravity are reviewed. Covariant derivatives are interpreted as generators of an induced representation of Path Group. Non-Abelian generalization of Stokes theorem is naturally formulated and proved in terms of paths. Quantum analogue of Equivalence Principle is formulated in terms of Path Group and Feynman path integrals.

Quantum continuous measurements, dynamical role of information and restricted path integrals

The restricted-path-integral (RPI) theory of continuous quantum measurements including the evolution of the measured systems and phenomenon of decoherence is reviewed. The measured system is considered as an open quantum system but without usage of any model of the measurement (of the measuring medium or the system's environment). The propagator of a measured system (conditioned by the measurement readout) is presented by RPI. In the important special case of monitoring an observable the propagator and the system's wave function satisfy Schroedinger equation with a complex Hamiltonian (depending on the measurement readout). Going over to the non-selective description of the measurement leads to the Lindblad master equation. In case of non-minimally disturbing measurements this gives theory of dissipative systems avoiding difficulties of other approaches. The whole theory is deduced from first principles of quantum mechanics. This proves that quantum mechanics includes theory of measurements and is therefore conceptually closed.

Quantum dissipative systems from theory of continuous measurements

We apply the restricted-path-integral (RPI) theory of non-minimally disturbing continuous measurements for correct description of frictional Brownian motion. The resulting master equation is automatically of the Lindblad form, so that the difficulties typical of other approaches do not exist. In the special case of harmonic oscillator the known familiar master equation describing its frictionally driven Brownian motion is obtained. A thermal reservoir as a measuring environment is considered.

Evolution of an open system as a continuous measurement of this system by its environment

The restricted-path-integral (RPI) description of a continuous quantum measurement is rederived starting from the description of an open system by the Feynman-Vernon influence functional. For this end the total evolution operator of the compound system consisting of the open system and its environment is decomposed into the sum of partial evolution operators. Accordingly, the influence functional of the open system is decomposed into the integral of partial influence functionals (PIF). If the partial evolution operators or PIF are chosen in such a way that they decohere (do not interfere with each other), then the formalism of RPI effectively arises. The evolution of the open system may then be interpreted as a continuous measurement of this system by its environment. This is possible if the environment is macroscopic or mesoscopic.

Gravitational effects in terms of paths in Minkowski space

An approach is developed which enables one to analyze gravitational effects without usage of any concrete model of geometry (or a class of models of geometry) of space-time and even without any coordinate system. Instead, the formalism of the group of paths is used. An element of this group (a class of curves in Minkowski space) is associated with each curve in the curved space-time and called its `flat model'. The analysis of observational data in terms of flat models of closed curves is interpreted as a formalization of the analysis which a `naive observer' (knowing nothing about the space-time being curved) applies to his observations.

The `diffusion' of light and angular distribution in the laser equipped with a multilobe mirror

The distribution of radiation is investigated for the modeless laser having a multilobe mirror with the lobes (planes) inclined by small angles to optical axis. It is shown that change of the direction resulting from many passages of a ray through the optical system including a multilobe mirror may be described as Brownian walk of a point along the plane or equivalently as a solution of the two-dimensional diffusion equation. Boundary conditions for the diffusion equation may be approximately formulated as null conditions at some angle which, if being reached during the walk, guarantees that the ray escape from the optical system. In the framework of this approximation an explicit formula for the distribution of the outgoing ray in different angles is derived. After many passages through the optical system the angular distribution tends to some universal function. In the case of the round mirror it may be presented by the Bessel function of order zero.

Gravitational effects on entangled states and interferometer with entangled atoms

It is discussed how systems of quantum-correlated (entangled)particles or atoms behave in external gravitational fields and what gravitational effects may exist in such systems. An experimental setup is proposed which improves the sensitivity of the Ramsey interferometer by the usage of quantum-correlated atoms. Entanglement of $n$ atoms improves the sensitivity to small phase shifts in $n^2$ times. This scheme may be used for observing gravity-induced phase shifts in laboratory.

Classical and quantum equivalence principle in terms of the path group

A natural mapping of paths in a curved space onto the paths in the corresponding (tangent) flat space may be used to reduce the curved-space-time path integral to the flat-space-time path integral. The dynamics of the particle in a curved space-time is expressed then in terms of an integral over paths in the flat (Minkowski) space-time. This may be called quantum equivalence principle. Contrary to the known DeWitt's definition of a curved-space path integral, the present definition leads to the covariant equation of motion without a scalar curvature term. The reduction of a curved-space path integral to the flat-space path integral may be expressed in terms of a representation of the path group. With the help of this representation all the results may be generalized to the case of an arbitrary external field.

Continuously Measured Systems,Path Integrals and Information

A continuously measured quantum system may be described by restricted path integrals (RPI) or equivalently by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. The measured system is then considered as an open system, the influence of the environment being taken into account by restricting the path integral or by inclusion of an imaginary part in the Hamiltonian. This way of description of measurements naturally follows from the Feynman form of quantum mechanics without any additional postulates and may be interpreted as an information approach to continuous quantum measurements. This reveals deep features of quantum physics concerning relations between quantum world and its classical appearance.

Measurability of Electromagnetic Field: Model and Path Integral Methods

The problem of the measurability of the electromagnetic field is investigated 1) in the framework of the abstract restricted-path-integral method, and 2) by explicitly accounting the action of the field onto the meter and its back reaction. The meaning of the previously obtained results as well as of the classical results of Bohr and Rosenfeld are made clear. The restricted-path-integral method with integration over field configurations is shown to give an estimation on the measurability of the field by any device not disturbing the measured field (in the process of measurement) more than by the measurement error. Such method of measurement is necessary for the control of the field in electronic devices.
