The recombination equation for interval partitions

The general deterministic recombination equation in continuous time is analysed for various lattices, with special emphasis on the lattice of interval (or ordered) partitions. Based on the recently constructed general solution for the lattice of all partitions, the corresponding solution for interval partitions is derived and analysed in detail. We focus our attention on the recursive structure of the solution and its decay rates, and also discuss the solution in the degenerate cases, where it comprises products of monomials with exponentially decaying factors. This can be understood via the Markov generator of the underlying partitioning process that was recently identified. We use interval partitions to gain insight into the structure of the solution, while our general framework works for arbitrary lattices.

Haldane linearisation done right: Solving the nonlinear recombination equation the easy way

The nonlinear recombination equation from population genetics has a long history and is notoriously difficult to solve, both in continuous and in discrete time. This is particularly so if one aims at full generality, thus also including degenerate parameter cases. Due to recent progress for the continuous time case via the identification of an underlying stochastic fragmentation process, it became clear that a direct general solution at the level of the corresponding ODE itself should also be possible. This paper shows how to do it, and how to extend the approach to the discrete-time case as well.

A guide to lifting aperiodic structures

The embedding of a given point set with non-crystallographic symmetry into higher-dimensional space is reviewed, with special emphasis on the Minkowski embedding known from number theory. This is a natural choice that does not require an a priori construction of a lattice in relation to a given symmetry group. Instead, some elementary properties of the point set in physical space are used, and explicit methods are described. This approach works particularly well for the standard symmetries encountered in the practical study of quasicrystalline phases. We also demonstrate this with a recent experimental example, taken from a sample with square-triangle tiling structure and (approximate) twelvefold symmetry.

Toeplitz flows and model sets

We show that binary Toeplitz flows can be interpreted as Delone dynamical systems induced by model sets and analyse the quantitative relations between the respective system parameters. This has a number of immediate consequences for the theory of model sets. In particular, we use our results in combination with special examples of irregular Toeplitz flows from the literature to demonstrate that irregular proper model sets may be uniquely ergodic and do not need to have positive entropy. This answers questions by Schlottmann and Moody.

Scaling of the Thue-Morse diffraction measure

We revisit the well-known and much studied Riesz product representation of the Thue-Morse diffraction measure, which is also the maximal spectral measure for the corresponding dynamical spectrum in the complement of the pure point part. The known scaling relations are summarised, and some new findings are explained.

On weak model sets of extremal density

The theory of regular model sets is highly developed, but does not cover examples such as the visible lattice points, the k-th power-free integers, or related systems. They belong to the class of weak model sets, where the window may have a boundary of positive measure, or even consists of boundary only. The latter phenomena are related to the topological entropy of the corresponding dynamical system and to various other unusual properties. Under a rather natural extremality assumption on the density of the weak model set we establish its pure point diffraction nature. We derive an explicit formula that can be seen as the generalisation of the case of regular model sets. Furthermore, the corresponding natural patch frequency measure is shown to be ergodic. Since weak model sets of extremal density are generic for this measure, one obtains that the dynamical spectrum of the hull is pure point as well.

Spectral notions of aperiodic order

Various spectral notions have been employed to grasp the structure of point sets, in particular non-periodic ones. In this article, we present them in a unified setting and explain the relations between them. For the sake of readability, we use Delone sets in Euclidean space as our main object class, and give generalisations in the form of further examples and remarks.

Pair correlations of aperiodic inflation rules via renormalisation: Some interesting examples

This article presents, in an illustrative fashion, a first step towards an extension of the spectral theory of constant length substitutions. Our starting point is the general observation that the symbolic picture (as defined by the substitution rule) and its geometric counterpart with natural prototile sizes (as defined by the induced inflation rule) may differ considerably. On the geometric side, an aperiodic inflation system possesses a set of exact renormalisation relations for its pair correlation coefficients. Here, we derive these relations for some paradigmatic examples and infer various spectral consequences. In particular, we consider the Fibonacci chain, revisit the Thue--Morse and the Rudin--Shapiro sytem, and finally analyse a twisted extension of the silver mean chain with mixed singular spectrum.

Diffraction Theory of Point Processes: Systems with Clumping and Repulsion

We discuss several examples of point processes (all taken from Hough, Krishnapur, Peres, Virág (2009)) for which the autocorrelation and diffraction measures can be calculated explicitly. These include certain classes of determinantal and permanental point processes, as well as an isometry-invariant point process that arises as the zero set of a Gaussian random analytic function.

The general recombination equation in continuous time and its solution

The process of recombination in population genetics, in its deterministic limit, leads to a nonlinear ODE in the Banach space of finite measures on a locally compact product space. It has an embedding into a larger family of nonlinear ODEs that permits a systematic analysis with lattice-theoretic methods for general partitions of finite sets. We discuss this type of system, reduce it to an equivalent finite-dimensional nonlinear problem, and establish a connection with an ancestral partitioning process, backward in time. We solve the finite-dimensional problem recursively for generic sets of parameters and briefly discuss the singular cases, and how to extend the solution to this situation.

Aperiodic order and spectral properties

This article presents a very gentle introduction to the field of aperiodic order, aimed at a general audience. It is intended to provide a "Snapshot of Modern Mathematics" relating to the Oberwolfach mini-workshop "Dynamical versus Diffraction Spectra in the Theory of Quasicrystals" in November/December 2014.

Ergodic properties of visible lattice points

Recently, the dynamical and spectral properties of square-free integers, visible lattice points and various generalisations have received increased attention. One reason is the connection of one-dimensional examples such as $\mathscr B$-free numbers with Sarnak's conjecture on the `randomness' of the Möbius function, another the explicit computability of correlation functions as well as eigenfunctions for these systems together with intrinsic ergodicity properties. Here, we summarise some of the results, with focus on spectral and dynamical aspects, and expand a little on the implications for mathematical diffraction theory.

Non-periodic systems with continuous diffraction measures

The present state of mathematical diffraction theory for systems with continuous spectral components is reviewed and extended. We begin with a discussion of various characteristic examples with singular or absolutely continuous diffraction, and then continue with a more general exposition of a systematic approach via stationary stochastic point processes. Here, the intensity measure of the Palm measure takes the role of the autocorrelation measure in the traditional approach. We furthermore introduce a `Palm-type' measure for general complex-valued random measures that are stationary and ergodic, and relate its intensity measure to the autocorrelation measure.

Well-rounded sublattices of planar lattices

A lattice in Euclidean $d$-space is called well-rounded if it contains $d$ linearly independent vectors of minimal length. This class of lattices is important for various questions, including sphere packing or homology computations. The task of enumerating well-rounded sublattices of a given lattice is of interest already in dimension 2, and has recently been treated by several authors. In this paper, we analyse the question more closely in the spirit of earlier work on similar sublattices and coincidence site sublattices. Combining explicit geometric considerations with known techniques from the theory of Dirichlet series, we arrive, after a considerable amount of computation, at asymptotic results on the number of well-rounded sublattices up to a given index in any planar lattice. For the two most symmetric lattices, the square and the hexagonal lattice, we present detailed results.

Radial spacing distributions from planar points sets

In this paper, we explore the radial projection method for locally finite point sets and provide numerical examples for different types of order. The main question is whether the method is suitable to analyse order in a quantitive way. Our findings indicate that the answer is affermative. In this context, we also study local visibility conditions for certain types of aperiodic point sets.

Dynamical versus diffraction spectrum for structures with finite local complexity

It is well-known that the dynamical spectrum of an ergodic measure dynamical system is related to the diffraction measure of a typical element of the system. This situation includes ergodic subshifts from symbolic dynamics as well as ergodic Delone dynamical systems, both via suitable embeddings. The connection is rather well understood when the spectrum is pure point, where the two spectral notions are essentially equivalent. In general, however, the dynamical spectrum is richer. Here, we consider (uniquely) ergodic systems of finite local complexity and establish the equivalence of the dynamical spectrum with a collection of diffraction spectra of the system and certain factors. This equivalence gives access to the dynamical spectrum via these diffraction spectra. It is particularly useful as the diffraction spectra are often simpler to determine and, in many cases, only very few of them need to be calculated.

Dynamical properties of $k$-free lattice points

We revisit the visible points of a lattice in Euclidean $n$-space together with their generalisations, the $k$th-power-free points of a lattice, and study the corresponding dynamical system that arises via the closure of the lattice translation orbit. Our analysis extends previous results obtained by Sarnak and by Cellarosi and Sinai for the special case of square-free integers and sheds new light on previous joint work with Peter Pleasants.
