On the formulation of functional theory for pairing with particle number restoration

The restoration of particle number within Energy Density Functional theory is analyzed. It is shown that the standard method based on configuration mixing leads to a functional of both the projected and non-projected densities. As an alternative that might be advantageous for mass models, nuclear dynamics and thermodynamics, we propose to formulate the functional in terms directly of the one-body and two-body density matrices of the state with good particle number. Our approach does not contain the pathologies recently observed when restoring the particle number in an Energy Density Functional framework based on transition density matrices and can eventually be applied with functionals having arbitrary density dependencies.

What can be learned from binding energy differences about nuclear structure: the example of delta V_{pn}

We perform an analysis of a binding energy difference called delta V_{pn}(N,Z) =- 1/4(E(Z,N)-E(Z,N-2)-E(Z-2,N)+ E(Z-2,N-2) in the framework of a realistic nuclear model. Using the angular-momentum and particle-number projected generator coordinate method and the Skyrme interaction SLy4, we analyze the contribution brought to delta V_{pn} by static deformation and dynamic fluctuations around the mean-field ground state. Our method gives a good overall description of delta V_{pn} throughout the chart of nuclei with the exception of the anomaly related to the Wigner energy along the N=Z line. The main conclusions of our analysis are that (i) the structures seen in the systematics of delta V_{pn} throughout the chart of nuclei can be easily explained combining a smooth background related to the symmetry energy and correlation energies due to deformation and collective fluctuations; (ii) the characteristic pattern of delta V_{pn} around a doubly-magic nucleus is a trivial consequence of the asymmetric definition of delta V_{pn}, and not due to a the different structure of these nuclei; (iii) delta V_{pn} does not provide a very reliable indicator for structural changes; (iv) δV_{pn} does not provide a reliable measure of the proton-neutron interaction in the nuclear EDF, neither of that between the last filled orbits, nor of the one summed over all orbits; (v) delta V_{pn} does not provide a conclusive benchmark for nuclear EDF methods that is superior or complementary to other mass filters such as two-nucleon separation energies or Q values.

Configuration mixing within the energy density functional formalism: pathologies and cures

Configuration mixing calculations performed in terms of the Skyrme/Gogny Energy Density Functional (EDF) rely on extending the Single-Reference energy functional into non-diagonal EDF kernels. The standard way to do so, based on an analogy with the pure Hamiltonian case and the use of the generalized Wick theorem, is responsible for the recently observed divergences and steps in Multi-Reference calculations. We summarize here the minimal solution to this problem recently proposed [Lacroix et al, arXiv:0809.2041] and applied with success to particle number restoration[Bender et al, arXiv:0809.2045]. Such a regularization method provides suitable corrections of pathologies for EDF depending on integer powers of the density. The specific case of fractional powers of the density[Duguet et al, arXiv:0809.2049] is also discussed.

The Tensor Part of the Skyrme Energy Density Functional

We systematically study the effect of the J^2 tensor terms in the Skyrme energy functional on properties of spherical nuclei. We build a set of 36 parameterizations covering a wide range of the corresponding parameter space. We analyze the impact of the tensor terms on the evolution of single-particle-level splittings along chains of semi-magic nuclei in spherical calculations. We find that positive values of the coupling constants of proton-neutron and like-particle tensor terms allow for a qualitative description of the evolution of neutron and proton single-particle level splittings in chains of Ca, Ni and Sn isotopes.

Quantum calculation of Coulomb reorientation and near-barrier fusion

We investigate the role of deformation on the fusion probability around the barrier using the Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock theory with a full Skyrme force. We obtain a distribution of fusion probabilities around the nominal barrier due to the different contributions of the various orientations of the deformed nucleus at the touching point. It is also shown that the long range Coulomb reorientation reduces the fusion probability around the barrier.

Algorithms for Rapidly Dispersing Robot Swarms in Unknown Environments

We develop and analyze algorithms for dispersing a swarm of primitive robots in an unknown environment, R. The primary objective is to minimize the makespan, that is, the time to fill the entire region. An environment is composed of pixels that form a connected subset of the integer grid. There is at most one robot per pixel and robots move horizontally or vertically at unit speed. Robots enter R by means of k>=1 door pixels Robots are primitive finite automata, only having local communication, local sensors, and a constant-sized memory. We first give algorithms for the single-door case (i.e., k=1), analyzing the algorithms both theoretically and experimentally. We prove that our algorithms have optimal makespan 2A-1, where A is the area of R. We next give an algorithm for the multi-door case (k>1), based on a wall-following version of the leader-follower strategy. We prove that our strategy is O(log(k+1))-competitive, and that this bound is tight for our strategy and other related strategies.
