Dynamically driven collapse of a thermally stable accretion disk in a nova-like system

While standard disk instability theory predicts thermal-steady, outburst-free disks in nova-like variables due to their high mass transfer rates, mass transfer variations are prevailingly invoked to explain the occasional flaring/fading phenomena observed in these systems. Here we report the observational evidence for a dynamical collapse of a thermally stable accretion disk, captured serendipitously by TESS during a fading episode of the VY Scl-type nova-like system MASTER OT J072703.91-631952.8, and traced by the emergence of an unusual negative superhump that evolves toward its orbital frequency. Simultaneously, the system underwent an anomalous eruptive event featuring a remarkably symmetric 45-day light-curve profile, indicative of a mild energy-release mechanism fundamentally distinct from documented eruptive events in cataclysmic variables. Notably, the concurrence of the eruption and the disk collapse is difficult to reconcile with the paradigm of mass transfer variations: the eruption implies enhanced mass transfer, whereas the disk collapse indicates a decline. The morphological disk evolution over $\sim 700$ days, characterized by both negative and positive superhumps, indicates a transition from a circular disk to an eccentric disk, followed by a tilted state and ultimately a minimal disk configuration. This evolutionary sequence provides evidence for a previously unrecognized dynamics-driven cycle operating in the thermally stable accretion disk of a VY Scl-type nova-like star.

The ANU WiFeS SuperNovA Program (AWSNAP)

This paper presents the first major data release and survey description for the ANU WiFeS SuperNovA Program (AWSNAP). AWSNAP is an ongoing supernova spectroscopy campaign utilising the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) on the Australian National University (ANU) 2.3m telescope. The first and primary data release of this program (AWSNAP-DR1) releases 357 spectra of 175 unique objects collected over 82 equivalent full nights of observing from July 2012 to August 2015. These spectra have been made publicly available via the WISeREP supernova spectroscopy repository. We analyse the AWSNAP sample of Type Ia supernova spectra, including measurements of narrow sodium absorption features afforded by the high spectral resolution of the WiFeS instrument. In some cases we were able to use the integral-field nature of the WiFeS instrument to measure the rotation velocity of the SN host galaxy near the SN location in order to obtain precision sodium absorption velocities. We also present an extensive time series of SN 2012dn, including a near-nebular spectrum which both confirms its "super-Chandrasekhar" status and enables measurement of the sub-solar host metallicity at the SN site.

Nucleosynthesis in a Primordial Supernova: Carbon and Oxygen Abundances in SMSS J031300.36-670839.31

SMSS J031300.36-670839.3 (hereafter SM0313-6708) is a sub-giant halo star, with no detectable Fe lines and large overabundances of C and Mg relative to Ca. We obtained VLT-UVES spectra extending to 3060 Angstroms showing strong OH A-X band lines enabling an oxygen abundance to be derived. The OH A-X band lines in SM0313-6708 are much stronger than the CH C-X band lines. Spectrum synthesis fits indicate an [O/C] ratio of 0.02 +- 0.175. Our high S/N UVES data also enabled us to lower the Fe abundance limit to [Fe/H]{3D},NLTE < -7.52 (3 sigma). These data support our previous suggestion that the star formed from the iron-poor ejecta of a single massive star Population III supernova.

SkyMapper Filter Set: Design and Fabrication of Large Scale Optical Filters

The SkyMapper Southern Sky Survey will be conducted from Siding Spring Observatory with u, v, g, r, i and z filters that comprise glued glass combination filters of dimension 309x309x15 mm. In this paper we discuss the rationale for our bandpasses and physical characteristics of the filter set. The u, v, g and z filters are entirely glass filters which provide highly uniform band passes across the complete filter aperture. The i filter uses glass with a short-wave pass coating, and the r filter is a complete dielectric filter. We describe the process by which the filters were constructed, including the processes used to obtain uniform dielectric coatings and optimized narrow band anti-reflection coatings, as well as the technique of gluing the large glass pieces together after coating using UV transparent epoxy cement. The measured passbands including extinction and CCD QE are presented.

SkyMapper and the Southern Sky Survey: a valuable resource for stellar astrophysics

The Australian National University's SkyMapper telescope is amongst the first of a new generation of dedicated wide-field survey telescopes. Featuring a 5.7 square deg field-of-view Cassegrain imager and 268 Mega-pixel CCD array, its primary goal will be to undertake the Southern Sky Survey: a six color (uvgriz), six-epoch digital record of the entire southern sky. The survey will provide photometry for objects between 8th and 23rd magnitude with a global photometric accuracy of 0.03 magnitudes and astrometry to 50 mas. In this contribution we introduce the SkyMapper facility, the survey data products and outline a variety of case-studies in stellar astrophysics for which SkyMapper will have high impact.

Searching for Planetary Transits in the Lupus Galactic Plane

A 52'X52' field in the Lupus Galactic plane was observed with the ANU 1m telescope for 53 nights during 2005 and 2006 in a search for transiting Hot Jupiter planets. A total of 2200 images were obtained. We have sampled 120,000 stars via differential photometry, of which ~26,000 have sufficient photometric accuracy (<=2.5%) with which to perform a search for transiting planets. Ongoing analysis has led to the identification of three candidates. We present an overview of the project, including the results of radial velocity analysis performed on the first candidate (Lupus-TR-1) with the 4m AAT telescope. The third candidate, Lupus-TR-3 (P=3.914d, V~16.5), is a particularly strong case for a giant planet of 1.0-1.2RJ orbiting a solar-like primary star with a near central transit. Further observations are planned to determine its nature.
