Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius spectrum for Anosov maps

We extend a number of results from one dimensional dynamics based on spectral properties of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius transfer operator to Anosov diffeomorphisms on compact manifolds. This allows to develop a direct operator approach to study ergodic properties of these maps. In particular, we show that it is possible to define Banach spaces on which the transfer operator is quasicompact. (Information on the existence of an SRB measure, its smoothness properties and statistical properties readily follow from such a result.) In dimension $d=2$ we show that the transfer operator associated to smooth random perturbations of the map is close, in a proper sense, to the unperturbed transfer operator. This allows to obtain easily very strong spectral stability results, which in turn imply spectral stability results for smooth deterministic perturbations as well. Finally, we are able to implement an Ulam type finite rank approximation scheme thus reducing the study of the spectral properties of the transfer operator to a finite dimensional problem.

Dynamics of traffic jams: order and chaos

By means of a novel variational approach we study ergodic properties of a model of a multi lane traffic flow, considered as a (deterministic) wandering of interacting particles on an infinite lattice. For a class of initial configurations of particles (roughly speaking satisfying the Law of Large Numbers) the complete description of their limit (in time) behavior is obtained, as well as estimates of the transient period. In this period the main object of interest is the dynamics of `traffic jams', which is rigorously defined and studied. It is shown that the dynamical system under consideration is chaotic in a sense that its topological entropy (calculated explicitly) is positive. Statistical quantities describing limit configurations are obtained as well.

Asymptotically exact spectral estimates for left triangular matrices

For a family of $n*n$ left triangular matrices with binary entries we derive asymptotically exact (as $n\to\infty$) representation for the complete eigenvalues-eigenvectors problem. In particular we show that the dependence of all eigenvalues on $n$ is asymptotically linear for large $n$. A similar result is obtained for more general (with specially scaled entries) left triangular matrices as well. As an application we study ergodic properties of a family of chaotic maps.

Variational principles in the analysis of traffic flows. (Why it is worth to go against the flow.)

By means of a novel variational approach and using dual maps techniques and general ideas of dynamical system theory we derive exact results about several models of transport flows, for which we also obtain a complete description of their limit (in time) behavior in the space of configurations. Using these results we study the motion of a speedy passive particle (tracer) moving along/against the flow of slow particles and demonstrate that the latter case might be more efficient.

Random perturbations of chaotic dynamical systems. Stability of the spectrum

For piecewise expanding one-dimensional maps without periodic turning points we prove that isolated eigenvalues of small (random) perturbations of these maps are close to isolated eigenvalues of the unperturbed system. (Here ``eigenvalue'' means eigenvalue of the corresponding Perron-Frobenius operator acting on the space of functions of bounded variation.) This result applies e.g. to the approximation of the system by a finite state Markov chain and generalizes Ulam's conjecture about the approximation of the SBR invariant measure of such a map. We provide several simple examples showing that for maps with periodic turning points and for general multidimensional smooth hyperbolic maps isolated eigenvalues are typically unstable under random perturbations. Our main tool in the 1D case is a special technique for ``interchanging'' the map and the perturbation, developed in our previous paper, combined with a compactness argument.

Fine structure and complex exponents in power law distributions from random maps

Discrete scale invariance (DSI) has recently been documented in time-to-failure rupture, earthquake processes and financial crashes, in the fractal geometry of growth processes and in random systems. The main signature of DSI is the presence of log-periodic oscillations correcting the usual power laws, corresponding to complex exponents. Log-periodic structures are important because they reveal the presence of preferred scaling ratios of the underlying physical processes. Here, we present new evidence of log-periodicity overlaying the leading power law behavior of probability density distributions of affine random maps with parametric noise. The log-periodicity is due to intermittent amplifying multiplicative events. We quantify precisely the progressive smoothing of the log-periodic structures as the randomness increases and find a large robustness. Our results provide useful markers for the search of log-periodicity in numerical and experimental data.

Stochastic stability versus localization in chaotic dynamical systems

We prove stochastic stability of chaotic maps for a general class of Markov random perturbations (including singular ones) satisfying some kind of mixing conditions. One of the consequences of this statement is the proof of Ulam's conjecture about the approximation of the dynamics of a chaotic system by a finite state Markov chain. Conditions under which the localization phenomenon (i.e. stabilization of singular invariant measures) takes place are also considered. Our main tools are the so called bounded variation approach combined with the ergodic theorem of Ionescu-Tulcea and Marinescu, and a random walk argument that we apply to prove the absence of ``traps'' under the action of random perturbations.

Generalized phase transitions in finite coupled map lattices

We investigate generalized phase transitions of type localization - delocalization from one to several Sinai-Bowen-Ruelle invariant measures in finite networks of chaotic elements (coupled map lattices) with general graphs of connections in the limit of weak coupling.
