Taming a resurgent ultra-violet renormalon

Perturbative expansions in quantum field theory diverge for at least two reasons: the number of Feynman diagrams increases dramatically with the loop number and the process of renormalization may make the contribution of some diagrams large. We give an example of the second problem, from an ultra-violent renormalon of $ϕ^3$ theory in 6 dimensions, where we can compute to very high loop-order. Taming this renormalon involves recent work on resurgence. This challenge is much more demanding than the corresponding problem for Yukawa theory in 4 dimensions.

Recursive computation of Feynman periods

Feynman periods are Feynman integrals that do not depend on external kinematics. Their computation, which is necessary for many applications of quantum field theory, is greatly facilitated by graphical functions or the equivalent conformal four-point integrals. We describe a set of transformation rules that act on such functions and allow their recursive computation in arbitrary even dimensions. As a concrete example we compute all subdivergence-free Feynman periods in $ϕ^3$ theory up to six loops and 561 of 607 Feynman periods at seven loops. Our results support the conjectured existence of a coaction structure in quantum field theory and suggest that $ϕ^3$ and $ϕ^4$ theory share the same number content.

Resonant resurgent asymptotics from quantum field theory

We perform an all-order resurgence analysis of a quantum field theory renormalon that contributes to an anomalous dimension in six-dimensional scalar $ϕ^3$ theory and is governed by a third-order nonlinear differential equation. We augment the factorially divergent perturbative expansion associated to the renormalon by asymptotic expansions to all instanton orders, in a conjectured and well-tested formula. A distinctive feature of this renormalon singularity is the appearance of logarithmic terms, starting at second-instanton order in the trans-series. To highlight this and to illustrate our methods, we also analyze the trans-series for a closely related second-order nonlinear differential equation that exhibits a similarly resonant structure but lacks logarithmic contributions.

Computing Euler characteristics using quantum field theory

This paper explains how to use quantum field theory techniques to find formal power series that encode the virtual Euler characteristics of $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$ and related graph complexes. Finding such power series was a necessary step in the asymptotic analysis of $χ(\mathrm{Out}(F_n))$ carried out in the authors' previous paper.

Semiclassical Trans-Series from the Perturbative Hopf-Algebraic Dyson-Schwinger Equations: $ϕ^3$ QFT in 6 Dimensions

We analyze the asymptotically free massless scalar $ϕ^3$ quantum field theory in 6 dimensions, using resurgent asymptotic analysis to find the trans-series solutions which yield the non-perturbative completion of the divergent perturbative solutions to the Kreimer-Connes Hopf-algebraic Dyson-Schwinger equations for the anomalous dimension. This scalar conformal field theory is asymptotically free and has a real Lipatov instanton. In the Hopf-algebraic approach we find a trans-series having an intricate Borel singularity structure, with three distinct but resonant non-perturbative terms, each repeated in an infinite series. These expansions are in terms of the renormalized coupling. The resonant structure leads to powers of logarithmic terms at higher levels of the trans-series, analogous to logarithmic terms arising from interactions between instantons and anti-instantons, but arising from a purely perturbative formalism rather than from a semi-classical analysis.

Tropical Monte Carlo quadrature for Feynman integrals

We introduce a new method to evaluate algebraic integrals over the simplex numerically. This new approach employs techniques from tropical geometry and exceeds the capabilities of existing numerical methods by an order of magnitude. The method can be improved further by exploiting the geometric structure of the underlying integrand. As an illustration of this, we give a specialized integration algorithm for a class of integrands that exhibit the form of a generalized permutahedron. This class includes integrands for scattering amplitudes and parametric Feynman integrals with tame kinematics. A proof-of-concept implementation is provided with which Feynman integrals up to loop order 17 can be evaluated.

The Euler characteristic of $\operatorname{Out}(F_n)$

We prove that the rational Euler characteristic of $\operatorname{Out}(F_n)$ is always negative and its asymptotic growth rate is $Γ(n- \frac32)/\sqrt{2π} \log^2 n$. This settles a 1987 conjecture of J. Smillie and the second author. We establish connections with the Lambert $W$-function and the zeta function.

Non-Perturbative Completion of Hopf-Algebraic Dyson-Schwinger Equations

For certain quantum field theories, the Kreimer-Connes Hopf-algebraic approach to renormalization reduces the Dyson-Schwinger equations to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations for the expansion coefficients of the renormalized Green's function. We apply resurgent asymptotic analysis to find the trans-series solutions which provide the non-perturbative completion of these formal Dyson-Schwinger expansions. We illustrate the general approach with the concrete example of four dimensional massless Yukawa theory, connecting with the exact functional solution found by Broadhurst and Kreimer. The trans-series solution is associated with the iterative form of the Dyson-Schwinger equations, and displays renormalon-like structure of integer-repeated Borel singularities. Extraction of the Stokes constant is possible due to a property we call `functional resurgence'.

The Hopf algebra structure of the $R^*$-operation

We give a Hopf-algebraic formulation of the $R^*$-operation, which is a canonical way to render UV and IR divergent Euclidean Feynman diagrams finite. Our analysis uncovers a close connection to Brown's Hopf algebra of motic graphs. Using this connection we are able to provide a verbose proof of the long observed 'commutativity' of UV and IR subtractions. We also give a new duality between UV and IR counterterms, which, entirely algebraic in nature, is formulated as an inverse relation on the group of characters of the Hopf algebra of log-divergent scaleless Feynman graphs. Many explicit examples of calculations with applications to infrared rearrangement are given.

Generating asymptotics for factorially divergent sequences

The algebraic properties of formal power series, whose coefficients show factorial growth and admit a certain well-behaved asymptotic expansion, are discussed. It is shown that these series form a subring of $\mathbb{R}[[x]]$. This subring is also closed under composition and inversion of power series. An 'asymptotic derivation' is defined which maps a power series to the asymptotic expansion of its coefficients. Product and chain rules for this derivation are deduced. With these rules asymptotic expansions of the coefficients of implicitly defined power series can be obtained. The full asymptotic expansions of the number of connected chord diagrams and the number of simple permutations are given as examples.

Graphs in perturbation theory: Algebraic structure and asymptotics

This thesis provides an extension of the work of Dirk Kreimer and Alain Connes on the Hopf algebra structure of Feynman graphs and renormalization to general graphs. Additionally, an algebraic structure of the asymptotics of formal power series with factorial growth, which is compatible with the Hopf algebraic structure, is introduced. The Hopf algebraic structure on graphs permits the explicit enumeration of graphs with constraints for the allowed subgraphs. In the case of Feynman diagrams a lattice structure, which will be introduced, exposes additional unique properties for physical quantum field theories. The differential ring of factorially divergent power series allows the extraction of asymptotic results of implicitly defined power series with vanishing radius of convergence. Together both structures provide an algebraic formulation of large graphs with constraints on the allowed subgraphs. These structures are motivated by and used to analyze renormalized zero-dimensional quantum field theory at high orders in perturbation theory. As a pure application of the Hopf algebra structure, an Hopf algebraic interpretation of the Legendre transformation in quantum field theory is given. The differential ring of factorially divergent power series will be used to solve two asymptotic counting problems from combinatorics: The asymptotic number of connected chord diagrams and the number of simple permutations. For both asymptotic solutions, all order asymptotic expansions are provided as generating functions in closed form. Both structures are combined in an application to zero-dimensional quantum field theory. Various quantities are explicitly given asymptotically in the zero-dimensional version of $φ^3$, $φ^4$, QED, quenched QED and Yukawa theory with their all order asymptotic expansions.

Renormalized asymptotic enumeration of Feynman diagrams

A method to obtain all-order asymptotic results for the coefficients of perturbative expansions in zero-dimensional quantum field is described. The focus is on the enumeration of the number of skeleton or primitive diagrams of a certain QFT and its asymptotics. The procedure heavily applies techniques from singularity analysis and is related to resurgence. To utilize singularity analysis, a representation of the zero-dimensional path integral as a generalized hyperelliptic curve is deduced. As applications the full asymptotic expansions of the number of disconnected, connected, 1PI and skeleton Feynman diagrams in various theories are given.

Algebraic lattices in QFT renormalization

The structure of overlapping subdivergences, which appear in the perturbative expansions of quantum field theory, is analyzed using algebraic lattice theory. It is shown that for specific QFTs the sets of subdivergences of Feynman diagrams form algebraic lattices. This class of QFTs includes the Standard model. In kinematic renormalization schemes, in which tadpole diagrams vanish, these lattices are semimodular. This implies that the Hopf algebra of Feynman diagrams is graded by the coradical degree or equivalently that every maximal forest has the same length in the scope of BPHZ renormalization. As an application of this framework a formula for the counter terms in zero-dimensional QFT is given together with some examples of the enumeration of primitive or skeleton diagrams.

Feynman diagrams and their algebraic lattices

We present the lattice structure of Feynman diagram renormalization in physical QFTs from the viewpoint of Dyson-Schwinger-Equations and the core Hopf algebra of Feynman diagrams. The lattice structure encapsules the nestedness of diagrams. This structure can be used to give explicit expressions for the counterterms in zero-dimensional QFTs using the lattice-Moebius function. Different applications for the tadpole-free quotient, in which all appearing elements correspond to semimodular lattices, are discussed.

Feynman graph generation and calculations in the Hopf algebra of Feynman graphs

Two programs for the computation of perturbative expansions of quantum field theory amplitudes are provided. feyngen can be used to generate Feynman graphs for Yang-Mills, QED and $φ^k$ theories. Using dedicated graph theoretic tools feyngen can generate graphs of comparatively high loop orders. feyncop implements the Hopf algebra of those Feynman graphs which incorporates the renormalization procedure necessary to calculate finite results in perturbation theory of the underlying quantum field theory. feyngen is validated by comparison to explicit calculations of zero dimensional quantum field theories and feyncop is validated using a combinatorial identity on the Hopf algebra of graphs.

Computations and generation of elements on the Hopf algebra of Feynman graphs

Two programs, feyngen and feyncop, were developed. feyngen is designed to generate high loop order Feynman graphs for Yang-Mills, QED and $ϕ^k$ theories. feyncop can compute the coproduct of these graphs on the underlying Hopf algebra of Feynman graphs. The programs can be validated by exploiting zero dimensional field theory combinatorics and identities on the Hopf algebra which follow from the renormalizability of the theories. A benchmark for both programs was made.
