Implementing a synthetic magnetic vector potential in a 2D superconducting qubit array

Superconducting quantum processors are a compelling platform for analog quantum simulation due to the precision control, fast operation, and site-resolved readout inherent to the hardware. Arrays of coupled superconducting qubits natively emulate the dynamics of interacting particles according to the Bose-Hubbard model. However, many interesting condensed-matter phenomena emerge only in the presence of electromagnetic fields. Here, we emulate the dynamics of charged particles in an electromagnetic field using a superconducting quantum simulator. We realize a broadly adjustable synthetic magnetic vector potential by applying continuous modulation tones to all qubits. We verify that the synthetic vector potential obeys requisite properties of electromagnetism: a spatially-varying vector potential breaks time-reversal symmetry and generates a gauge-invariant synthetic magnetic field, and a temporally-varying vector potential produces a synthetic electric field. We demonstrate that the Hall effect--the transverse deflection of a charged particle propagating in an electromagnetic field--exists in the presence of the synthetic electromagnetic field.

A Lattice Chiral Boson Theory in $1+1$d

Chiral field theories describe large classes of matter, from the edges of Quantum Hall systems to the electroweak sector of the Standard Model, but defining them on the lattice has been an ongoing challenge due to a no-go theorem precluding free local models, the potential of symmetry anomalies, and sign problems. Some approaches define a $1+1$d chiral field theory as the edge of a $2+1$d system and argue that the edge decouples from the bulk, but this can be difficult to verify due to finite size effects and strong interactions. On the other hand, recent work has shown how to define the $2+1$d bulk theory as an exactly solvable model with zero correlation length, in which case the edge theory may be extracted exactly. We use these techniques to derive a lattice field theory on a $1+1$d spacetime lattice which carries an anomalous chiral $U(1)$ symmetry with zero chiral central charge. The lattice theory with anomalous chiral $U(1)$ symmetry is always gapless, regardless of lattice interactions. We demonstrate the chiral anomaly by coupling to a background gauge field, develop a field theory which demonstrates the chiral behavior, and show how to assemble a chiral, anomaly-free theory where the gauge field may be taken to be dynamical.

Quantum Information Science and Technology for Nuclear Physics. Input into U.S. Long-Range Planning, 2023

In preparation for the 2023 NSAC Long Range Plan (LRP), members of the Nuclear Science community gathered to discuss the current state of, and plans for further leveraging opportunities in, QIST in NP research at the Quantum Information Science for U.S. Nuclear Physics Long Range Planning workshop, held in Santa Fe, New Mexico on January 31 - February 1, 2023. The workshop included 45 in-person participants and 53 remote attendees. The outcome of the workshop identified strategic plans and requirements for the next 5-10 years to advance quantum sensing and quantum simulations within NP, and to develop a diverse quantum-ready workforce. The plans include resolutions endorsed by the participants to address the compelling scientific opportunities at the intersections of NP and QIST. These endorsements are aligned with similar affirmations by the LRP Computational Nuclear Physics and AI/ML Workshop, the Nuclear Structure, Reactions, and Astrophysics LRP Town Hall, and the Fundamental Symmetries, Neutrons, and Neutrinos LRP Town Hall communities.

A Commuting Projector Model with a Non-zero Quantized Hall conductance

By ungauging a recently discovered lattice rotor model for Chern-Simons theory, we create an exactly soluble path integral on spacetime lattice for $U^κ(1)$ Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phases in $2+1$ dimensions with a non-zero Hall conductance. We then convert the path integral on a $2+1$d spacetime lattice into a $2$d Hamiltonian lattice model, and show that the Hamiltonian consists of mutually commuting local projectors. We confirm the non-zero Hall conductance by calculating the Chern number of the exact ground state. It has recently been suggested that no commuting projector model can host a nonzero Hall conductance. We evade this no-go theorem by considering a rotor model, with a countably infinite number of states per site.

Lattice realization of compact $U(1)$ Chern-Simons theory with exact 1-symmetries

We propose a bosonic $U(1)$ rotor model on a three dimensional space-time lattice. With the inclusion of a Maxwell term, we show that the low-energy semi-classical behavior of our model is consistent with the Chern-Simons field theory, $S= \int \text{d}^3 x\ \frac{K_{IJ}}{4π} A_I \text{d} A_J$ at low energies. We require that the action be periodic in the lattice variables, which enforces the quantization of the $K$-matrix as a symmetric integer matrix with even diagonals. We also show that our lattice model has the exact $1$-symmetries. In particular, some of those 1-symmetries are anomalous (i.e. non-on-site) in the expected way. The anomaly can be probed via the breaking of those $1$-symmetries by the boundaries of space-time.

A Single Right-Moving Free Fermion Mode on an Ultra-Local $1+1$d Spacetime Lattice

Defining a Chiral Fermion Theory on a lattice has presented an ongoing challenge both in Condensed Matter physics and in Lattice Gauge Theory. In this paper, we demonstrate that a chiral free-fermion theory can live on an ultra-local spacetime lattice if we allow the Lagrangian to be non-hermitian. Rather than a violation of unitarity, the non-hermitian structure of our Lagrangian arises because time is discrete, and we show that our model is obeys an elementary unitarity condition: namely, that the norm of the two-point functions conserves probability. Beyond unitarity, our model displays several surprising properties: it is formulated directly in Minkowskian time; it has exactly Lorentz invariant dynamics for all frequencies and momenta (in the large volume limit); and it is free from all gauge anomalies, despite the prediction from field theory that it should suffer one. We show that our model is a discrete time description of a single chiral edge mode of several recently proposed $2+1$d Floquet models. That the chiral edge can be treated without the rest of the $2+1$d system, even when coupled to a gauge field, implies that the Floquet models are radically different from Integer Quantum Hall models, which also support chiral edge modes. Furthermore, the Floquet results imply that our model can be physically realized, which presents an opportunity for gauge theories to be simulated in a condensed matter or cold atom context. Our results present a solution to the `Chiral-fermion problem:' a chiral field theory can indeed be defined on an ultra-local spacetime lattice, and we address how our model avoids several no-go arguments.

A Novel Non-Perturbative Lattice Regularization of an Anomaly-Free $1 + 1d$ Chiral $SU(2)$ Gauge Theory

We present a numerical treatment of a novel non-perturbative lattice regularization of a $1+1d$ $SU(2)$ Chiral Gauge Theory. Our approach follows recent proposals that exploit the newly discovered connection between anomalies and topological (or entangled) states to show how to create a lattice regularization of any anomaly-free chiral gauge theory. In comparison to other methods, our regularization enjoys on-site fermions and gauge action, as well as a physically transparent fermion Hilbert space. We follow the `mirror fermion' approach, in which we first create a lattice regularization of both the chiral theory and its mirror conjugate and then introduce interactions that gap out only the mirror theory. The connection between topological states and anomalies shows that such interactions exist if the chiral theory is free of all quantum anomalies. Instead of numerically intractable fermion-fermion interactions, we couple the mirror theory to a Higgs field driven into a symmetry-preserving, disordered, gapped phase.

Angular spin-orbit coupling in cold atoms

We propose coupling two internal atomic states using a pair of Raman beams operated in Laguerre-Gaussian laser modes with unequal phase windings. This generates a coupling between the atom's pseudo-spin and its orbital angular momentum. We analyze the single-particle properties of the system using realistic parameters and provide detailed studies of the spin texture of the ground state. Finally, we consider a weakly interacting atomic condensate subject to this angular spin-orbit coupling and show how the inter-atomic interactions modifies the single-particle physics.
