Gauge-Invariant Initial Conditions and Early Time Perturbations in Quintessence Universes

We present a systematic treatment of the initial conditions and evolution of cosmological perturbations in a universe containing photons, baryons, neutrinos, cold dark matter, and a scalar quintessence field. By formulating the evolution in terms of a differential equation involving a matrix acting on a vector comprised of the perturbation variables, we can use the familiar language of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. As the largest eigenvalue of the evolution matrix is fourfold degenerate, it follows that there are four dominant modes with non-diverging gravitational potential at early times, corresponding to adiabatic, cold dark matter isocurvature, baryon isocurvature and neutrino isocurvature perturbations. We conclude that quintessence does not lead to an additional independent mode.

Cosmic Microwave Background and Supernova Constraints on Quintessence: Concordance Regions and Target Models

We perform a detailed comparison of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropy with the predictions of quintessence cosmological models of dark energy. We consider a wide range of quintessence models, including: a constant equation-of-state; a simply-parametrized, time-evolving equation-of-state; a class of models of early quintessence; scalar fields with an inverse-power law potential. We also provide a joint fit to the CBI and ACBAR CMB data, and the type 1a supernovae. Using these select constraints we identify viable, target models for further analysis.

The Location of CMB Peaks in a Universe with Dark Energy

The locations of the peaks of the CMB spectrum are sensitive indicators of cosmological parameters, yet there is no known analytic formula which accurately describes their dependence on them. We parametrize the location of the peaks as l_m = l_A(m - ϕ_m), where l_A is the analytically calculable acoustic scale and m labels the peak number. Fitting formulae for the phase shifts ϕ_m for the first three peaks and the first trough are given. It is shown that in a wide range of parameter space, the acoustic scale l_A can be retrieved from actual CMB measurements of the first three peaks within one percent accuracy. This can be used to speed up likelihood analysis. We describe how the peak shifts can be used to distinguish between different models of dark energy.

Quintessence and the cosmological constant

Quintessence -- the energy density of a slowly evolving scalar field -- may constitute a dynamical form of the homogeneous dark energy in the universe. We review the basic idea in the light of the cosmological constant problem. Cosmological observations or a time variation of fundamental `constants' can distinguish quintessence from a cosmological constant.

Loop Corrections to Scalar Quintessence Potentials

The stability of scalar quintessence potentials under quantum fluctuations is investigated both for uncoupled models and models with a coupling to fermions. We find that uncoupled models are usually stable in the late universe. However, a coupling to fermions is severely restricted. We check whether a graviton induced fermion-quintessence coupling is compatible with this restriction.

Constraining Quintessence with the New CMB Data

The CMB data recently released by BOOMERANG and MAXIMA suggest that the anisotropy spectrum has a third peak in the range 800 1 are disfavoured. Models with more than 5% quintessence before last scattering require a spectral index greater than 1. These constraints are compared with supernovae observations. We also show that the CMB alone now provides strong evidence for an accelerating universe.

Structure Formation and the Time Dependence of Quintessence

We discuss the influence of dark energy on structure formation, especially the effects on σ_8. Our interest is particularly focused on quintessence models with time-dependent equation of state and non-negligible quintessence component in the early universe. We obtain an analytic expression for σ_8 valid for a large class of dark energy models. We conclude that structure formation is a good indicator for the history of dark energy and use our results to set constraints on quintessence models.

The Influence of Quintessence on the Separation of CMB Peaks

A hypothetical dark energy component may have an equation of state that is different from a cosmological constant and possibly even changing in time. The spacing of the cosmic microwave background peaks is sensitive to the ratio of the horizon sizes today and at last scattering and therefore to the details of the cosmological evolution. Together with independent measurements of today's cosmological parameters, this restricts quintessence models in the epoch before and during decoupling. For fixed Ω^b_0, Ω^{cdm}_0 and h, we give an analytic estimate of the spacing that depends on Ω^ϕ_{ls}, Ω^ϕ_0 and an effective equation of state of the dark energy component.

Quintessence and the Separation of CMB Peaks

We propose that it should be possible to use the CMB to discriminate between dark energy models with different equations of state, including distinguishing a cosmological constant from many models of quintessence. The separation of peaks in the CMB anisotropies can be parametrised by three quantities: the amount of quintessence today, the amount at last scattering, and the averaged equation of state of quintessence. In particular, we show that the CMB peaks can be used to measure the amount of dark energy present before last scattering.
