Universal singular exponents in catalytic variable equations

Catalytic equations appear in several combinatorial applications, most notably in the numeration of lattice path and in the enumeration of planar maps. The main purpose of this paper is to show that the asymptotic estimate for the coefficients of the solutions of (so-called) positive catalytic equations has a universal asymptotic behavior. In particular, this provides a rationale why the number of maps of size $n$ in various planar map classes grows asymptotically like $c\cdot n^{-5/2} γ^n$, for suitable positive constants $c$ and $γ$. Essentially we have to distinguish between linear catalytic equations (where the subexponential growth is $n^{-3/2}$) and non-linear catalytic equations (where we have $n^{-5/2}$ as in planar maps). Furthermore we provide a quite general central limit theorem for parameters that can be encoded by catalytic functional equations, even when they are not positive.

Möbius orthogonality of sequences with maximal entropy

We prove that strongly $b$-multiplicative functions of modulus $1$ along squares are asymptotically orthogonal to the Möbius function. This provides examples of sequences having maximal entropy and satisfying this property.

Maximal independent sets and maximal matchings in series-parallel and related graph classes

The goal of this paper is to obtain quantitative results on the number and on the size of maximal independent sets and maximal matchings in several block-stable graph classes that satisfy a proper sub-criticality condition. In particular we cover trees, cacti graphs and series-parallel graphs. The proof methods are based on a generating function approach and a proper singularity analysis of solutions of implicit systems of functional equations in several variables. As a byproduct, this method extends previous results of Meir and Moon for trees [Meir, Moon: On maximal independent sets of nodes in trees, Journal of Graph Theory 1988].

Pattern occurrences in random planar maps

We consider planar maps adjusted with a (regular critical) Boltzmann distribution and show that the expected number of pattern occurrences of a given map is asymptotically linear when the number n of edges goes to infinity. The main ingredient for the proof is an extension of a formula by Liskovets (1999).

Asymptotic study of subcritical graph classes

We present a unified general method for the asymptotic study of graphs from the so-called "subcritical"$ $ graph classes, which include the classes of cacti graphs, outerplanar graphs, and series-parallel graphs. This general method works both in the labelled and unlabelled framework. The main results concern the asymptotic enumeration and the limit laws of properties of random graphs chosen from subcritical classes. We show that the number $g_n/n!$ (resp. $g_n$) of labelled (resp. unlabelled) graphs on $n$ vertices from a subcritical graph class ${G}=\cup_n {G_n}$ satisfies asymptotically the universal behaviour $$ g_n = c n^{-5/2} γ^n (1+o(1)) $$ for computable constants $c,γ$, e.g. $γ\approx 9.38527$ for unlabelled series-parallel graphs, and that the number of vertices of degree $k$ ($k$ fixed) in a graph chosen uniformly at random from $G_n$, converges (after rescaling) to a normal law as $n\to\infty$.

Modelling Silicosis: The Structure of Equilibria

We analyse the structure of equilibria of a coagulation-fragmentation-death model of silicosis. We present exact multiplicity results in the particular case of piecewise-constant coefficients, results on existence and non-existence of equilibria in the general case, as well as precise asymptotics for the infinite series that arise in the case of power law coefficients.

Randomness and non-randomness properties of Piatetski-Shapiro sequences modulo m

We study Piatetski-Shapiro sequences $(\lfloor n^c\rfloor)_n$ modulo m, for non-integer $c >1$ and positive $m$, and we are particularly interested in subword occurrences in those sequences. We prove that each block $\in\{0,1\}^k$ of length $k < c + 1$ occurs as a subword with the frequency $2^{-k}$, while there are always blocks that do not occur. In particular, those sequences are not normal. For $1<c<2$, we estimate the number of subwords from above and below, yielding the fact that our sequences are deterministic and not morphic. Finally, using the Daboussi-Kátai criterion, we prove that the sequence $\lfloor n^c\rfloor$ modulo m is asymptotically orthogonal to multiplicative functions bounded by $1$ and with mean value $0$.

A Joint Central Limit Theorem for the Sum-of-Digits Function, and Asymptotic Divisibility of Catalan-like Sequences

We prove a central limit theorem for the joint distribution of $s_q(A_jn)$, $1\le j \le d$, where $s_q$ denotes the sum-of-digits function in base~$q$ and the $A_j$'s are positive integers relatively prime to $q$. We do this in fact within the framework of quasi-additive functions. As application, we show that most elements of "Catalan-like" sequences - by which we mean integer sequences defined by products/quotients of factorials - are divisible by any given positive integer.

Limit Laws of Planar Maps with Prescribed Vertex Degrees

We prove a general multi-dimensional central limit theorem for the expected number of vertices of a given degree in the family of planar maps whose vertex degrees are restricted to an arbitrary (finite or infinite) set of positive integers $D$. Our results rely on a classical bijection with mobiles (objects exhibiting a tree structure), combined with refined analytic tools to deal with the systems of equations on infinite variables that arise. We also discuss possible extensions to maps of higher genus and to weighted maps.

Asymmetric Rényi Problem

In 1960 Rényi in his Michigan State University lectures asked for the number of random queries necessary to recover a hidden bijective labeling of $n$ distinct objects. In each query one selects a random subset of labels and asks, which objects have these labels? We consider here an asymmetric version of the problem in which in every query an object is chosen with probability $p > 1/2$ and we ignore "inconclusive" queries. We study the number of queries needed to recover the labeling in its entirety ($H_n$), before at least one element is recovered ($F_n$), and to recover a randomly chosen element $(D_n)$. This problem exhibits several remarkable behaviors: $D_n$ converges in probability but not almost surely, $H_n$ and $F_n$ exhibit phase transitions with respect to $p$ in the second term. We prove that for $p>1/2$ with high probability (whp) we need $H_n=\log_{1/p} n +\frac 12 \log_{p/(1-p)}\log n +o(\log \log n) $ queries to recover the entire bijection. This should be compared to its symmetric ($p=1/2$) counterpart established by Pittel and Rubin, who proved that in this case one requires $H_n=\log_{2} n +\sqrt{2 \log_{2} n} +o(\sqrt{\log n}) $ queries. As a bonus, our analysis implies novel results for random PATRICIA tries, as the problem is probabilistically equivalent to that of the height, fillup level, and typical depth of a PATRICIA trie built from $n$ independent binary sequences generated by a biased($p$) memoryless source.

Möbius orthogonality for the Zeckendorf sum-of-digits function

We show that the (morphic) sequence $(-1)^{s_φ(n)}$ is asymptotically orthogonal to all bounded multiplicative functions, where $s_φ$ denotes the Zeckendorf sum-of-digits function. In particular we have $\sum_{n<N} (-1)^{s_φ(n)} μ(n) = o(N)$, that is, this sequence satisfies the Sarnak conjecture.

Graph limits of random graphs from a subset of connected $k$-trees

For any set $Ω$ of non-negative integers such that $\{0,1\}\subseteq Ω$ and $\{0,1\}\ne Ω$, we consider a random $Ω$-$k$-tree ${\sf G}_{n,k}$ that is uniformly selected from all connected $k$-trees of $(n+k)$ vertices where the number of $(k+1)$-cliques that contain any fixed $k$-clique belongs to $Ω$. We prove that ${\sf G}_{n,k}$, scaled by $(kH_{k}σ_Ω)/(2\sqrt{n})$ where $H_{k}$ is the $k$-th Harmonic number and $σ_Ω>0$, converges to the Continuum Random Tree $\mathcal{T}_{\sf e}$. Furthermore, we prove the local convergence of the rooted random $Ω$-$k$-tree ${\sf G}_{n,k}^{\circ}$ to an infinite but locally finite random $Ω$-$k$-tree ${\sf G}_{\infty,k}$.

Asymmetric Rényi Problem and PATRICIA Tries

In 1960, Rényi asked for the number of random queries necessary to recover a hidden bijective labeling of n distinct objects. In each query one selects a random subset of labels and asks, what is the set of objects that have these labels? We consider here an asymmetric version of the problem in which in every query an object is chosen with probability p > 1/2 and we ignore "inconclusive" queries. We study the number of queries needed to recover the labeling in its entirety (the height), to recover at least one single element (the fillup level), and to recover a randomly chosen element (the typical depth). This problem exhibits several remarkable behaviors: the depth D_n converges in probability but not almost surely and while it satisfies the central limit theorem its local limit theorem doesn't hold; the height H_n and the fillup level F_n exhibit phase transitions with respect to p in the second term. To obtain these results, we take a unified approach via the analysis of the external profile, defined at level k as the number of elements recovered by the kth query. We first establish new precise asymptotic results for the average and variance, and a central limit law, for the external profile in the regime where it grows polynomially with n. We then extend the external profile results to the boundaries of the central region, leading to the solution of our problem for the height and fillup level. As a bonus, our analysis implies novel results for analogous parameters of random PATRICIA tries.

On a Conjecture of Cusick Concerning the Sum of Digits of n and n + t

For a nonnegative integer $t$, let $c_t$ be the asymptotic density of natural numbers $n$ for which $s(n + t) \geq s(n)$, where $s(n)$ denotes the sum of digits of $n$ in base $2$. We prove that $c_t > 1/2$ for $t$ in a set of asymptotic density $1$, thus giving a partial solution to a conjecture of T. W. Cusick stating that $c_t > 1/2$ for all t. Interestingly, this problem has several equivalent formulations, for example that the polynomial $X(X + 1)\cdots(X + t - 1)$ has less than $2^t$ zeros modulo $2^{t+1}$. The proof of the main result is based on Chebyshev's inequality and the asymptotic analysis of a trivariate rational function, using methods from analytic combinatorics.

Subgraph statistics in subcritical graph classes

Let $H$ be a fixed graph and $\mathcal{G}$ a subcritical graph class. In this paper we show that the number of occurrences of $H$ (as a subgraph) in a uniformly at random graph of size $n$ in $\mathcal{G}$ follows a normal limiting distribution with linear expectation and variance. The main ingredient in our proof is the analytic framework developed by Drmota, Gittenberger and Morgenbesser to deal with infinite systems of functional equations. As a case study, we get explicit expressions for the number of triangles and cycles of length four for the family of series-parallel graphs.

Disproof of a conjecture by Rademacher on partial fractions

In his book Topics in Analytic Number Theory, Rademacher considered the generating function of partitions into at most $N$ parts, and conjectured certain limits for the coefficients of its partial fraction decomposition. We carry out an asymptotic analysis that disproves this conjecture, thus confirming recent observations of Sills and Zeilberger (Journal of Difference Equations and Applications 19, 2013), who gave strong numerical evidence against the conjecture.
