Probing cellular activity via charge-sensitive quantum nanoprobes

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) based quantum sensors hold great potential for real-time single-cell sensing with far-reaching applications in fundamental biology and medical diagnostics. Although highly sensitive, the mapping of quantum measurements onto cellular physiological states has remained an exceptional challenge. Here we introduce a novel quantum sensing modality capable of detecting changes in cellular activity. Our approach is based on the detection of environment-induced charge depletion within an individual particle that, owing to a previously unaccounted transverse dipole term, induces systematic shifts in the zero-field splitting (ZFS). Importantly, these charge-induced shifts serve as a reliable indicator for lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-mediated inflammatory response in macrophages. Furthermore, we demonstrate that surface modification of our diamond nanoprobes effectively suppresses these environment-induced ZFS shifts, providing an important tool for differentiating electrostatic shifts caused by the environment from other unrelated effects, such as temperature variations. Notably, this surface modification also leads to significant reductions in particle-induced toxicity and inflammation. Our findings shed light on systematic drifts and sensitivity limits of NV spectroscopy in a biological environment with ramification on the critical discussion surrounding single-cell thermogenesis. Notably, this work establishes the foundation for a novel sensing modality capable of probing complex cellular processes through straightforward physical measurements.

Chemical trends of substitutional transition metal dopants in diamond: an ab initio study

The electronic and magnetic properties of neutral substitutional transition-metal dopants in dia- mond are calculated within density functional theory using the generalized gradient approximation to the exchange-correlation potential. Ti and Fe are nonmagnetic, whereas the ground state of V, Cr and Mn are magnetic with a spin entirely localized on the magnetic ion. For Co, Ni, and Cu, the ground state is magnetic with the spin distributed over the transition-metal ion and the nearest-neighbor carbon atoms; furthermore a bound state is found in the gap that originates from the hybridization of the 3d-derived level of the dopant and the 2p-derived dangling bonds of the nearest-neighbor carbons. A p{d hybridization model is developed in order to describe the origin of the magnetic interaction. This model predicts high-spin to low-spin transitions for Ni and Cu under compressive strain.

Substitutional nickel impurities in diamond: decoherence-free subspaces for quantum information processing

The electronic and magnetic properties of a neutral substitutional nickel (Ni$_s^0$) impurity in diamond are studied using density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation. The spin-one ground state consists of two electrons with parallel spins, one located on the nickel ion in the $3d^9$ configuration and the other distributed among the nearest-neighbor carbons. The exchange interaction between these spins is due to $p-d$ hybridization and is controllable with compressive hydrostatic or uniaxial strain, and for sufficient strain the antiparallel spin configuration becomes the ground state. Hence, the Ni impurity forms a controllable two-electron exchange-coupled system that should be a robust qubit for solid-state quantum information processing.

Impurity induced low-energy resonances in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta}

We study sharp low-energy resonance peaks in the local density of states (LDOS) induced by Zn impurities or possible Cu vacancies in superconducting Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta}. The measured structure of these near-zero-bias resonances is quantitatively reproduced by an extended impurity potential without invoking internal impurity states or sophisticated tunneling models. The Zn potential extends at least to the nearest-neighbor Cu sites, and the range of order parameter suppression extends at least 8 Åaway from the Zn site. We further show that the local spin susceptibilities near Zn impurities increase rather than decrease with decreasing temperature in the superconducting state due to the sharp increase of LDOS near the Fermi level.

Electronic structures and electron spin decoherence in (001)-grown layered zincblende semiconductors

Electronic structure calculations for layered zincblende semiconductors are described within a restricted basis formalism which naturally and non-perturbatively accomodates both crystalline inversion asymmetry and cubic anisotropy. These calculations are applied to calculate the electron spin decoherence times $T_1$ and $T_2$ due to precessional decoherence in quantum wells. Distinctly different dependences of spin coherence times on mobility, quantization energy, and temperature are found from perturbative calculations. Quantitative agreement between these calculations and experiments is found for GaAs/AlGaAs, InGaAs/InP, and GaSb/AlSb $(001)$-grown quantum wells. The electron spin coherence times for CdZnSe/ZnSe II-VI quantum wells are calculated, and calculations of InGaAs/GaAs quantum wells appropiate for comparison with spin-LED structures are also presented.

Multiband tight-binding model of local magnetism in GaMnAs

We present the spin and orbitally resolved local density of states (LDOS) for a single Mn impurity and for two nearby Mn impurities in GaAs. The GaAs host is described by a sp^3 tight-binding Hamiltonian, and the Mn impurity is described by a local p-d hybridization and on-site potential. Local spin-polarized resonances within the valence bands significantly enhance the LDOS near the band edge. For two nearby parallel Mn moments the acceptor states hybridize and split in energy. Thus scanning tunneling spectroscopy can directly measure the Mn-Mn interaction as a function of distance.

Electron Spin Decoherence in Bulk and Quantum Well Zincblende Semiconductors

A theory for longitudinal (T1) and transverse (T2) electron spin coherence times in zincblende semiconductor quantum wells is developed based on a non-perturbative nanostructure model solved in a fourteen-band restricted basis set. Distinctly different dependences of coherence times on mobility, quantization energy, and temperature are found from previous calculations. Quantitative agreement between our calculations and measurements is found for GaAs/AlGaAs, InGaAs/InP, and GaSb/AlSb quantum wells.

Local Electronic Structure of a Single Magnetic Impurity in a Superconductor

The electronic structure near a single classical magnetic impurity in a superconductor is determined using a fully self-consistent Koster-Slater algorithm. Localized excited states are found within the energy gap which are half electron and half hole. Within a jellium model we find the new result that the spatial structure of the positive-frequency (electron-like) spectral weight (or local density of states), can differ strongly from that of the negative frequency (hole-like) spectral weight. The effect of the impurity on the continuum states above the energy gap is calculated with good spectral resolution for the first time. This is also the first three-dimensional self-consistent calculation for a strong magnetic impurity potential.

Theory of a Scanning Tunneling Microscope with a Two-Protrusion Tip

We consider a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) such that tunneling occurs through two atomically sharp protrusions on its tip. When the two protrusions are separated by at least several atomic spacings, the differential conductance of this STM depends on the electronic transport in the sample between the protrusions. Furthermore two-protrusion tips commonly occur during STM tip preparation. We explore possible applications to probing dynamical impurity potentials on a metallic surface and local transport in an anisotropic superconductor.

Probing Spatial Correlations with Nanoscale Two-Contact Tunneling

Interference effects on the transport through two localized tunnel junctions on the surface of a well-grounded sample reveal intrinsic spatial correlations characteristic of the uncoupled sample. Differential conductances of the two-junction probe are related to the spatial correlations of both normal and superconducting samples. For a superconducting sample the gap anisotropy strongly affects the results. This may serve as a sensitive probe of the order parameter in high-temperature superconductors.

Measuring the Relative Phase of the Energy Gap in a High-Temperature Superconductor with EELS

A method of measuring the relative phase of the energy gap in a high-temperature superconductor is suggested for electron energy loss spectroscopy. Energy-resolved measurements of off-specular scattering should show a feature similar to the specular feature associated with the gap. Unlike the specular feature, which reflects an average of the gap over the (normal) Fermi surface, the energy loss of the off-specular feature depends on the superconducting energy gap at only two locations on the Fermi surface. The onset of the feature reflects the relative phase between these two points. This result is independent of surface characteristics. Such characteristics affect the {\it magnitude} of the off-specular feature, not its location or onset. The size of the feature is estimated for a simple surface model. Implications of specific measurements on $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8$ are discussed.

Subharmonic Generation in Quantum Systems

We show how the classical-quantum correspondence permits long-lived subharmonic motion in a quantum system driven by a periodic force. Exponentially small deviations from exact subharmonicity are due to coherent tunneling between quantized vortex tubes which surround classical elliptic periodic orbits.
