Katsura-Exel-Pardo self-similar actions, Putnam's binary factors and their limit spaces

We show that the dynamical system associated by Putnam to a pair of graph embeddings is identical to the shift map on the limit space of a self-similar groupoid action on a graph. Moreover, performing a certain out-split on said graph gives rise to a Katsura-Exel-Pardo groupoid action on the out-split graph whose associated limit space dynamical system is conjugate to the previous one. We characterise the self-similar properties of these groupoids in terms of properties of their defining data, two matrices $A$, $B$. We prove a large class of the associated limit spaces are bundles of circles and points which fibre over a totally disconnected space, and the dynamics restricted to each circle is of the form $z\to z^{n}$. Moreover, we find a planar embedding of these spaces, thereby answering a question Putnam posed in his paper.

C*-algebras of self-similar actions of groupoids on higher-rank graphs and their equilibrium states

We introduce the notion of a self-similar action of a groupoid $G$ on a finite higher-rank graph. To these actions we associate a compactly aligned product system of Hilbert bimodules, and thereby obtain corresponding universal Nica--Toeplitz and Cuntz--Pimsner algebras. We consider natural actions of the real numbers on both algebras and study the KMS states of the associated dynamics. For large inverse temperatures, we describe the simplex of KMS states on the Nica--Toeplitz algebra in terms of traces on the full $C^*$-algebra of $G$. We prove that if the graph is $G$-aperiodic and the action satisfies a finite-state condition, then there is a unique KMS state on the Cuntz--Pimsner algebra.

Planar aperiodic tile sets: from Wang tiles to the Hat and Spectre monotiles

A brief history of planar aperiodic tile sets is presented, starting from the Domino Problem proposed by Hao Wang in 1961. We provide highlights that led to the discovery of the Taylor--Socolar aperiodic monotile in 2010 and the Hat and Spectre aperiodic monotiles in 2023. The Spectre tile is an amazingly simple monotile; a single tile whose translated and rotated copies tile the plane but only in a way that lacks any translational periodicity. We showcase this breakthrough discovery through the 60$+$ years that aperiodic tile sets have been considered.

A geometric representative for the fundamental class in KK-duality of Smale spaces

A fundamental ingredient in the noncommutative geometry program is the notion of KK-duality, often called K-theoretic Poincaré duality, that generalises Spanier-Whitehead duality. In this paper we construct a $θ$-summable Fredholm module that represents the fundamental class in KK-duality between the stable and unstable Ruelle algebras of a Smale space. To find such a representative, we construct dynamical partitions of unity on the Smale space with highly controlled Lipschitz constants. This requires a generalisation of Bowen's Markov partitions. Along with an aperiodic point-sampling technique we produce a noncommutative analogue of Whitney's embedding theorem, leading to the Fredholm module.

KK-duality for self-similar groupoid actions on graphs

We extend Nekrashevych's $KK$-duality for $C^*$-algebras of regular, recurrent, contracting self-similar group actions to regular, contracting self-similar groupoid actions on a graph, removing the recurrence condition entirely and generalising from a finite alphabet to a finite graph. More precisely, given a regular and contracting self-similar groupoid $(G,E)$ acting faithfully on a finite directed graph $E$, we associate two $C^*$-algebras, $\mathcal{O}(G,E)$ and $\widehat{\mathcal{O}}(G,E)$, to it and prove that they are strongly Morita equivalent to the stable and unstable Ruelle C*-algebras of a Smale space arising from a Wieler solenoid of the self-similar limit space. That these algebras are Spanier-Whitehead dual in $KK$-theory follows from the general result for Ruelle algebras of irreducible Smale spaces proved by Kaminker, Putnam, and the last author.

Self-similarity and limit spaces of substitution tiling semigroups

We show that Kellendonk's tiling semigroup of an FLC substitution tiling is self-similar, in the sense of Bartholdi, Grigorchuk and Nekrashevych. We extend the notion of the limit space of a self-similar group to the setting of self-similar semigroups, and show that it is homeomorphic to the Anderson--Putnam complex for such substitution tilings, with natural self-map induced by the substitution. Thus, the inverse limit of the limit space, given by the limit solenoid of the self-similar semigroup, is homeomorphic to the translational hull of the tiling.

An aperiodic tile with edge-to-edge orientational matching rules

We present a single, connected tile which can tile the plane but only non-periodically. The tile is hexagonal with edge markings, which impose simple rules as to how adjacent tiles are allowed to meet across edges. The first of these rules is a standard matching rule, that certain decorations match across edges. The second condition is a new type of matching rule, which allows tiles to meet only when certain decorations in a particular orientation are given the opposite charge. This forces the tiles to form a hierarchy of triangles, following a central idea of the Socolar--Taylor tilings. However, the new edge-to-edge orientational matching rule forces this structure in a very different way, which allows for a surprisingly simple proof of aperiodicity. We show that the hull of all tilings satisfying our rules is uniquely ergodic and that almost all tilings in the hull belong to a minimal core of tilings generated by substitution. Identifying tilings which are charge-flips of each other, these tilings are shown to have pure point dynamical spectrum and a regular model set structure.

An aperiodic monotile that forces nonperiodicity through dendrites

We introduce a new type of aperiodic hexagonal monotile; a prototile that admits infinitely many tilings of the plane, but any such tiling lacks any translational symmetry. Adding a copy of our monotile to a patch of tiles must satisfy two rules that apply only to adjacent tiles. The first is inspired by the Socolar--Taylor monotile, but can be realised by shape alone. The second is a local growth rule; a direct isometry of our monotile can be added to any patch of tiles provided that a tree on the monotile connects continuously with a tree on one of its neighbouring tiles. This condition forces tilings to grow along dendrites, which ultimately results in nonperiodic tilings. Our local growth rule initiates a new method to produce tilings of the plane.

Classification of tiling $C^*$-algebras

We prove that Kellendonk's $C^*$-algebra of an aperiodic and repetitive tiling with finite local complexity is classifiable by the Elliott invariant. Our result follows from showing that tiling $C^*$-algebras are $\mathcal{Z}$-stable, and hence have finite nuclear dimension. To prove $\mathcal{Z}$-stability, we extend Matui's notion of almost finiteness to the setting of étale groupoid actions following the footsteps of Kerr. To use some of Kerr's techniques we have developed a version of the Ornstein-Weiss quasitiling theorem for general étale groupoids.

Zappa-Szép product groupoids and C*-blends

We study the external and internal Zappa-Szép product of topological groupoids. We show that under natural continuity assumptions the Zappa-Szép product groupoid is étale if and only if the individual groupoids are étale. In our main result we show that the C*-algebra of a locally compact Hausdorff étale Zappa-Szép product groupoid is a C*-blend, in the sense of Exel, of the individual groupoid C*-algebras. We finish with some examples, including groupoids built from *-commuting endomorphisms, and skew product groupoids.

Fractal spectral triples on Kellendonk's $C^*$-algebra of a substitution tiling

We introduce a new class of noncommutative spectral triples on Kellendonk's $C^*$-algebra associated with a nonperiodic substitution tiling. These spectral triples are constructed from fractal trees on tilings, which define a geodesic distance between any two tiles in the tiling. Since fractals typically have infinite Euclidean length, the geodesic distance is defined using Perron-Frobenius theory, and is self-similar with scaling factor given by the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue. We show that each spectral triple is $θ$-summable, and respects the hierarchy of the substitution system. To elucidate our results, we construct a fractal tree on the Penrose tiling, and explicitly show how it gives rise to a collection of spectral triples.

Equilibrium states on operator algebras associated to self-similar actions of groupoids on graphs

We consider self-similar actions of groupoids on the path spaces of finite directed graphs, and construct examples of such self-similar actions using a suitable notion of graph automaton. Self-similar groupoid actions have a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra and a Toeplitz algebra, both of which carry natural dynamics lifted from the gauge actions. We study the equilibrium states (the KMS states) on the resulting dynamical systems. Above a critical inverse temperature, the KMS states on the Toeplitz algebra are parametrised by the traces on the full $C^*$-algebra of the groupoid, and we describe a program for finding such traces. The critical inverse temperature is the logarithm of the spectral radius of the incidence matrix of the graph, and at the critical temperature the KMS states on the Toeplitz algebra factor through states of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. Under a verifiable hypothesis on the self-similar action, there is a unique KMS state on the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. We discuss an explicit method of computing the values of this KMS state, and illustrate with examples.

Functorial properties of Putnam's homology theory for Smale spaces

We investigate functorial properties of Putnam's homology theory for Smale spaces. Our analysis shows that the addition of a conjugacy condition is necessary to ensure functoriality. Several examples are discussed that elucidate the need for our additional hypotheses. Our second main result is a natural generalization of Putnam's Pullback Lemma from shifts of finite type to non-wandering Smale spaces.

Wieler solenoids, Cuntz-Pimsner algebras and K-theory

We study irreducible Smale spaces with totally disconnected stable sets and their associated $K$-theoretic invariants. Such Smale spaces arise as Wieler solenoids, and we restrict to those arising from open surjections. The paper follows three converging tracks: one dynamical, one operator algebraic and one $K$-theoretic. Using Wieler's Theorem, we characterize the unstable set of a finite set of periodic points as a locally trivial fibre bundle with discrete fibres over a compact space. This characterization gives us the tools to analyze an explicit groupoid Morita equivalence between the groupoids of Deaconu-Renault and Putnam-Spielberg, extending results of Thomsen. The Deaconu-Renault groupoid and the explicit Morita equivalence leads to a Cuntz-Pimsner model for the stable Ruelle algebra. The $K$-theoretic invariants of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras are then studied using the Pimsner extension, for which we construct an unbounded representative. To elucidate the power of these constructions we characterize the KMS weights on the stable Ruelle algebra of a Wieler solenoid. We conclude with several examples of Wieler solenoids, their associated algebras and spectral triples.

Topological spaces associated to higher-rank graphs

We investigate which topological spaces can be constructed as topological realisations of higher-rank graphs. We describe equivalence relations on higher-rank graphs for which the quotient is again a higher-rank graph, and show that identifying isomorphic co-hereditary subgraphs in a disjoint union of two rank-$k$ graphs gives rise to pullbacks of the associated $C^*$-algebras. We describe a combinatorial version of the connected-sum operation and apply it to the rank-2-graph realisations of the four basic surfaces to deduce that every compact 2-manifold is the topological realisation of a rank-2 graph. We also show how to construct $k$-spheres and wedges of $k$-spheres as topological realisations of rank-$k$ graphs.

Dynamical correspondences for Smale spaces

We initiate the study of correspondences for Smale spaces. Correspondences are shown to provide a notion of a generalized morphism between Smale spaces and are a special case of finite equivalences. Furthermore, for shifts of finite type, a correspondence is related to a matrix which intertwines the adjacency matrices of the shifts. This observation allows us to define an equivalence relation on all Smale spaces which reduces to shift equivalence for shifts of finite type. Several other notions of equivalence are introduced on both correspondences and Smale spaces; a hierarchy between these equivalences is established. Finally, we provide several methods for constructing correspondences and provide specific examples.

Fractal dual substitution tilings

Starting with a substitution tiling, we demonstrate a method for constructing infinitely many new substitution tilings. Each of these new tilings is derived from a graph iterated function system and the tiles have fractal boundary. We show that each of the new tilings is mutually locally derivable to the original tiling. Thus, at the tiling space level, the new substitution rules are expressing geometric and combinatorial, rather than topological, features of the original. Our method is easy to apply to particular substitution tilings, permits experimentation, and can be used to construct border-forcing substitution rules. For a large class of examples we show that the combinatorial dual tiling has a realization as a substitution tiling. Since the boundaries of our new tilings are fractal we are led to compute their fractal dimension. As an application of our techniques we show how to compute the Čech cohomology of a (not necessarily border-forcing) tiling using a graph iterated function system of a fractal tiling.
