Differential Norms and Rieffel Algebras

We develop criteria to guarantee uniqueness of the C$^*$-norm on a *-algebra $\mathcal{B}$. Nontrivial examples are provided by the noncommutative algebras of $\mathcal{C}$-valued functions $\mathcal{S}_J^\mathcal{C}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $\mathcal{B}_J^\mathcal{C}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ defined by M.A. Rieffel via a deformation quantization procedure, where $\mathcal{C}$ is a C$^*$-algebra and $J$ is a skew-symmetric linear transformation on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with respect to which the usual pointwise product is deformed. In the process, we prove that the Fr\'echet *-algebra topology of $\mathcal{B}_J^\mathcal{C}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ can be generated by a sequence of submultiplicative *-norms and that, if $\mathcal{C}$ is unital, this algebra is closed under the C$^\infty$-functional calculus of its C$^*$-completion. We also show that the algebras $\mathcal{S}_J^\mathcal{C}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $\mathcal{B}_J^\mathcal{C}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ are spectrally invariant in their respective C$^*$-completions, when $\mathcal{C}$ is unital. As a corollary of our results, we obtain simple proofs of certain estimates in $\mathcal{B}_J^\mathcal{C}(\mathbb{R}^n)$.

Lie Groupoids in Classical Field Theory II: Gauge Theories, Minimal Coupling and Utiyama's Theorem

In the two papers of this series, we initiate the development of a new approach to implementing the concept of symmetry in classical field theory, based on replacing Lie groups/algebras by Lie groupoids/algebroids, which are the appropriate mathematical tools to describe local symmetries when gauge transformations are combined with space-time transformations. In this second part, we shall adapt the formalism developed in the first paper to the context of gauge theories and deal with minimal coupling and Utiyama's theorem.

Lie Groupoids in Classical Field Theory I: Noether's Theorem

In the two papers of this series, we initiate the development of a new approach to implementing the concept of symmetry in classical field theory, based on replacing Lie groups/algebras by Lie groupoids/algebroids, which are the appropriate mathematical tools to describe local symmetries when gauge transformations are combined with space-time transformations. Here, we outline the basis of the program and, as a first step, show how to (re)formulate Noether's theorem about the connection between symmetries and conservation laws in this approach.

On Covariant Poisson Brackets in Classical Field Theory

How to give a natural geometric definition of a covariant Poisson bracket in classical field theory has for a long time been an open problem - as testified by the extensive literature on "multisymplectic Poisson brackets", together with the fact that all these proposals suffer from serious defects. On the other hand, the functional approach does provide a good candidate which has come to be known as the Peierls - De Witt bracket and whose construction in a geometrical setting is now well understood. Here, we show how the basic "multisymplectic Poisson bracket" already proposed in the 1970s can be derived from the Peierls - De Witt bracket, applied to a special class of functionals. This relation allows to trace back most (if not all) of the problems encountered in the past to ambiguities (the relation between differential forms on multiphase space and the functionals they define is not one-to-one) and also to the fact that this class of functionals does not form a Poisson subalgebra.

C*-Completions and the DFR-Algebra

The aim of this paper is to present the construction of a general family of C*-algebras which includes, as a special case, the "quantum spacetime algebra" introduced by Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts. It is based on an extension of the notion of C*-completion from algebras to bundles of algebras, compatible with the usual C*-completion of the appropriate algebras of sections, combined with a novel definition for the algebra of the canonical commutation relations using Rieffel's theory of strict deformation quantization. Taking the C*-algebra of continuous sections vanishing at infinity, we arrive at a functor associating a C*-algebra to any Poisson vector bundle and recover the original DFR-algebra as a particular example.

Protein synthesis driven by dynamical stochastic transcription

In this manuscript we propose a mathematical framework to couple transcription and translation in which mRNA production is described by a set of master equations while the dynamics of protein density is governed by a random differential equation. The coupling between the two processes is given by a stochastic perturbation whose statistics satisfies the master equations. In this approach, from the knowledge of the analytical time dependent distribution of mRNA number, we are able to calculate the dynamics of the probability density of the protein population.

Locally $C^*$ Algebras, $C^*$ Bundles and Noncommutative Spaces

This work provides a generalization of the Gelfand duality to the context of noncommutative locally $C^*$ algebras. Using a reformulation of a theorem proven by Dauns and Hofmann in the 60's we show that every locally $C^*$ algebra can be realized as the algebra of continuous sections of a $C^*$ bundle over a compactly generated topological space. This result is used then to show that on certain special cases locally $C^*$ algebras can be used to define certain sheaves of locally $C^*$ algebras that, inspired by the analogy with commutative geometry, we call noncommutative spaces. The last section provides some examples, motivated by mathematical physics, for this definition of noncommutative space. Namely we show that every local net of $C^*$ algebras defines a noncommutative space and, based on a loose generalization of the original construction by Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts, construct what we propose to call a "locally covariant quantum spacetime".

Lagrangian Distributions and Connections in Symplectic Geometry

We discuss the interplay between lagrangian distributions and connections in symplectic geometry, beginning with the traditional case of symplectic manifolds and then passing to the more general context of poly- and multisymplectic structures on fiber bundles, which is relevant for the covariant hamiltonian formulation of classical field theory. In particular, we generalize Weinstein's tubular neighborhood theorem for symplectic manifolds carrying a (simple) lagrangian foliation to this situation. In all cases, the Bott connection, or an appropriately extended version thereof, plays a central role.

The DFR-Algebra for Poisson Vector Bundles

The aim of the present paper is to present the construction of a general family of $C^*$-algebras that includes, as a special case, the "quantum space-time algebra" first introduced by Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts. To this end, we first review, within the $C^*$-algebra context, the Weyl-Moyal quantization procedure on a fixed Poisson vector space (a vector space equipped with a given bivector, which may be degenerate). We then show how to extend this construction to a Poisson vector bundle over a general manifold $M$, giving rise to a $C^*$-algebra which is also a module over $C_0(M)$. Apart from including the original DFR-model, this method yields a "fiberwise quantization" of general Poisson manifolds.

Hamiltonian Vector Fields on Multiphase Spaces of Classical Field Theory

We present a classification of hamiltonian vector fields on multisymplectic and polysymplectic fiber bundles closely analogous to the one known for the corresponding dual jet bundles that appear in the multisymplectic and polysymplectic approach to first order classical field theories.

Local symmetries in gauge theories in a finite-dimensional setting

It is shown that the correct mathematical implementation of symmetry in the geometric formulation of classical field theory leads naturally beyond the concept of Lie groups and their actions on manifolds, out into the realm of Lie group bundles and, more generally, of Lie groupoids and their actions on fiber bundles. This applies not only to local symmetries, which lie at the heart of gauge theories, but is already true even for global symmetries when one allows for fields that are sections of bundles with (possibly) non-trivial topology or, even when these are topologically trivial, in the absence of a preferred trivialization.

Multisymplectic and polysymplectic structures on fiber bundles

We introduce the concepts of a multisymplectic structure and a polysymplectic structure on a general fiber bundle over a general base manifold, define the concept of the symbol of a multisymplectic form, which is a polysymplectic form representing its leading order contribution, and prove Darboux theorems for the existence of canonical local coordinates.

Maximal Subgroups of Compact Lie Groups

This report aims at giving a general overview on the classification of the maximal subgroups of compact Lie groups (not necessarily connected). In the first part, it is shown that these fall naturally into three types: (1) those of trivial type, which are simply defined as inverse images of maximal subgroups of the corresponding component group under the canonical projection and whose classification constitutes a problem in finite group theory, (2) those of normal type, whose connected one-component is a normal subgroup, and (3) those of normalizer type, which are the normalizers of their own connected one-component. It is also shown how to reduce the classification of maximal subgroups of the last two types to: (2) the classification of the finite maximal $\Sigma$-invariant subgroups of center-free connected compact simple Lie groups and (3) the classification of the $\Sigma$-primitive subalgebras of compact simple Lie algebras, where $\Sigma$ is a subgroup of the corresponding outer automorphism group. In the second part, we explicitly compute the normalizers of the primitive subalgebras of the compact classical Lie algebras (in the corresponding classical groups), thus arriving at the complete classification of all (non-discrete) maximal subgroups of the compact classical Lie groups.

Covariant Poisson Brackets in Geometric Field Theory

We establish a link between the multisymplectic and the covariant phase space approach to geometric field theory by showing how to derive the symplectic form on the latter, as introduced by Crnkovic-Witten and Zuckerman, from the multisymplectic form. The main result is that the Poisson bracket associated with this symplectic structure, according to the standard rules, is precisely the covariant bracket due to Peierls and DeWitt.

Currents and the Energy-Momentum Tensor in Classical Field Theory: A fresh look at an Old Problem

We give a comprehensive review of various methods to define currents and the energy-momentum tensor in classical field theory, with emphasis on a geometric point of view. The necessity of ``improving'' the expressions provided by the canonical Noether procedure is addressed and given an adequate geometric framework. The main new ingredient is the explicit formulation of a principle of ``ultralocality'' with respect to the symmetry generators, which is shown to fix the ambiguity inherent in the procedure of improvement and guide it towards a unique answer: when combined with the appropriate splitting of the fields into sectors, it leads to the well-known expressions for the current as the variational derivative of the matter field Lagrangian with respect to the gauge field and for the energy-momentum tensor as the variational derivative of the matter field Lagrangian with respect to the metric tensor. In the second case, the procedure is shown to work even when the matter field Lagrangian depends explicitly on the curvature, thus establishing the correct relation between scale invariance, in the form of local Weyl invariance ``on shell'', and tracelessness of the energy-momentum tensor, required for a consistent definition of the concept of a conformal field theory.

From Dynamical to Numerical R-Matrices: A Case Study for the Calogero Models

Within the class of integrable Calogero models associated with (semi-)simple Lie algebras and with symmetric pairs of Lie algebras identified in a previous paper, we analyze whether and to what extent it is possible to find a gauge transformation that takes the traditional Lax pair with its dynamical R-matrix to a new Lax pair with a numerical R-matrix.

A general construction of Poisson brackets on exact multisymplectic manifolds

In this note the long standing problem of the definition of a Poisson bracket in the framework of a multisymplectic formulation of classical field theory is solved. The new bracket operation can be applied to forms of arbitary degree. Relevant examples are discussed and important properties are stated with proofs sketched.
