When Six Gates are Not Enough

We apply the pigeonhole principle to show that there must exist Boolean functions on 7 inputs with a multiplicative complexity of at least 7, i.e., that cannot be computed with only 6 multiplications in the Galois field with two elements.

Angle Preserving Mappings

In this paper, we give some characterizations of orthogonality preserving mappings between inner product spaces. Furthermore, we study the linear mappings that preserve some angles. One of our main results states that if $\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{Y}$ are real inner product spaces and $θ\in(0, π)$, then an injective nonzero linear mapping $T:\mathcal{X}\longrightarrow \mathcal{Y}$ is a similarity whenever (i) $x\undersetθ{\angle} y\, \Leftrightarrow \,Tx\undersetθ{\angle} Ty$ for all $x, y\in \mathcal{X}$; (ii) for all $x, y\in \mathcal{X}$, $\|x\|=\|y\|$ and $x\undersetθ{\angle} y$ ensure that $\|Tx\|=\|Ty\|$. We also investigate orthogonality preserving mappings in the setting of inner product $C^{*}$-modules. Another result shows that if $\mathbb{K}(\mathscr{H})\subseteq\mathscr{A}\subseteq\mathbb{B}(\mathscr{H})$ is a $C^{*}$-algebra and $T\,:\mathscr{E}\longrightarrow \mathscr{F}$ is an $\mathscr{A}$-linear mapping between inner product $\mathscr{A}$-modules, then $T$ is orthogonality preserving if and only if $|x|\leq|y|\, \Rightarrow \,|Tx|\leq|Ty|$ for all $x, y\in \mathscr{E}$.

Solving Graph Coloring Problems with Abstraction and Symmetry

This paper introduces a general methodology, based on abstraction and symmetry, that applies to solve hard graph edge-coloring problems and demonstrates its use to provide further evidence that the Ramsey number $R(4,3,3)=30$. The number $R(4,3,3)$ is often presented as the unknown Ramsey number with the best chances of being found "soon". Yet, its precise value has remained unknown for more than 50 years. We illustrate our approach by showing that: (1) there are precisely 78{,}892 $(3,3,3;13)$ Ramsey colorings; and (2) if there exists a $(4,3,3;30)$ Ramsey coloring then it is (13,8,8) regular. Specifically each node has 13 edges in the first color, 8 in the second, and 8 in the third. We conjecture that these two results will help provide a proof that no $(4,3,3;30)$ Ramsey coloring exists implying that $R(4,3,3)=30$.

Twenty-Five Comparators is Optimal when Sorting Nine Inputs (and Twenty-Nine for Ten)

This paper describes a computer-assisted non-existence proof of nine-input sorting networks consisting of 24 comparators, hence showing that the 25-comparator sorting network found by Floyd in 1964 is optimal. As a corollary, we obtain that the 29-comparator network found by Waksman in 1969 is optimal when sorting ten inputs. This closes the two smallest open instances of the optimal size sorting network problem, which have been open since the results of Floyd and Knuth from 1966 proving optimality for sorting networks of up to eight inputs. The proof involves a combination of two methodologies: one based on exploiting the abundance of symmetries in sorting networks, and the other, based on an encoding of the problem to that of satisfiability of propositional logic. We illustrate that, while each of these can single handed solve smaller instances of the problem, it is their combination which leads to an efficient solution for nine inputs.

Generalized inverses and polar decomposition of unbounded regular operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules

In this note we show that an unbounded regular operator $t$ on Hilbert $C^*$-modules over an arbitrary $C^*$ algebra $ \mathcal{A}$ has polar decomposition if and only if the closures of the ranges of $t$ and $|t|$ are orthogonally complemented, if and only if the operators $t$ and $t^*$ have unbounded regular generalized inverses. For a given $C^*$-algebra $ \mathcal{A}$ any densely defined $\mathcal A$-linear closed operator $t$ between Hilbert $C^*$-modules has polar decomposition, if and only if any densely defined $\mathcal A$-linear closed operator $t$ between Hilbert $C^*$-modules has generalized inverse, if and only if $\mathcal A$ is a $C^*$-algebra of compact operators.

Orthogonality-preserving, C*-conformal and conformal module mappings on Hilbert C*-modules

We investigate orthonormality-preserving, C*-conformal and conformal module mappings on Hilbert C*-modules to obtain their general structure. Orthogonality-preserving bounded module maps T act as a multiplication by an element λof the center of the multiplier algebra of the C*-algebra of coefficients combined with an isometric module operator as long as some polar decomposition conditions for the specific element λare fulfilled inside that multiplier algebra. Generally, T always fulfils the equality $ = | λ|^2 < x,y>$ for any elements x,y of the Hilbert C*-module. At the contrary, C*-conformal and conformal bounded C*-linear mappings are shown to be only the positive real multiples of isometric module operators.

Hilbert C*-modules over monotone complete C*-algebras

The aim of the present paper is to describe self-duality and C*- reflexivity of Hilbert {\bf A}-modules $\cal M$ over monotone complete C*-algebras {\bf A} by the completeness of the unit ball of $\cal M$ with respect to two types of convergence being defined, and by a structural criterion. The derived results generalize earlier results of {\sc H.~Widom} [Duke Math.~J.~23, 309-324, MR 17 \# 1228] and {\sc W.~L.~Paschke} [Trans. Amer.~Math.~Soc.~182, 443-468, MR 50 \# 8087, Canadian J.~Math.~26, 1272-1280, MR 57 \# 10433]. For Hilbert C*-modules over commutative AW*-algebras the equivalence of the self-duality property and of the Kaplansky-Hilbert property is reproved, (cf. {\sc M.~Ozawa} [J.~Math.~Soc.~Japan 36, 589-609, MR 85m:46068] ). Especially, one derives that for a C*-algebra {\bf A} the {\bf A}-valued inner pro\-duct of every Hilbert {\bf A}-module $\cal M$ can be continued to an {\bf A}-valued inner product on it's {\bf A}-dual Banach {\bf A}-module $\cal M$' turning $\cal M$' to a self-dual Hilbert {\bf A}-module if and only if {\bf A} is monotone complete (or, equivalently, additively complete) generalizing a result of {\sc M.~Hamana} [Internat.~J.~Math.~3(1992), 185-204]. A classification of countably generated self-dual Hilbert {\bf A}-modules over monotone complete C*-algebras {\bf A} is established. The set of all bounded module operators ${\bf End}_A (\cal M)$ on self-dual Hilbert {\bf A}-modules $\cal M$ over monotone complete C*-algebras {\bf A} is proved again to be a monotone complete

Adjointability of densely defined closed operators and the Magajna-Schweizer Theorem

In this notes unbounded regular operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules over arbitrary $C^*$-algebras are discussed. A densely defined operator $t$ possesses an adjoint operator if the graph of $t$ is an orthogonal summand. Moreover, for a densely defined operator $t$ the graph of $t$ is orthogonally complemented and the range of $P_FP_{G(t)^\bot}$ is dense in its biorthogonal complement if and only if $t$ is regular. For a given $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal A$ any densely defined $\mathcal A$-linear closed operator $t$ between Hilbert $C^*$-modules is regular, if and only if any densely defined $\mathcal A$-linear closed operator $t$ between Hilbert $C^*$-modules admits a densely defined adjoint operator, if and only if $\mathcal A$ is a $C^*$-algebra of compact operators. Some further characterizations of closed and regular modular operators are obtained. Changes 1: Improved results, corrected misprints, added references. Accepted by J. Operator Theory, August 2007 / Changes 2: Filled gap in the proof of Thm. 3.1, changes in the formulations of Cor. 3.2 and Thm. 3.4, updated references and address of the second author.

Superstability of adjointable mappings on Hilbert $C^*$-modules

We define the notion of $φ$-perturbation of a densely defined adjointable mapping and prove that any such mapping $f$ between Hilbert ${\mathcal A}$-modules over a fixed $C^*$-algebra ${\mathcal A}$ with densely defined corresponding mapping $g$ is ${\mathcal A}$-linear and adjointable in the classical sense with adjoint $g$. If both $f$ and $g$ are everywhere defined then they are bounded. Our work concerns with the concept of Hyers--Ulam--Rassias stability originated from the Th.M. Rassias' stability theorem that appeared in his paper [On the stability of the linear mapping in Banach spaces, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 72 (1978), 297--300]. We also indicate interesting complementary results in the case where the Hilbert $C^*$-modules admit non-adjointable $C^*$-linear mappings.

Injective and projective Hilbert C*-modules, and C*-algebras of compact operators

We consider projectivity and injectivity of Hilbert C*-modules in the categories of Hilbert C*-(bi-)modules over a fixed C*-algebra of coefficients (and another fixed C*-algebra represented as bounded module operators) and bounded (bi-)module morphisms, either necessarily adjointable or arbitrary ones. As a consequence of these investigations, we obtain a set of equivalent conditions characterizing C*-subalgebras of C*-algebras of compact operators on Hilbert spaces in terms of general properties of Hilbert C*-modules over them. Our results complement results recently obtained by B. Magajna, J. Schweizer and M. Kusuda. In particular, all Hilbert C*-(bi-)modules over C*-algebras of compact operators on Hilbert spaces are both injective and projective in the categories we consider. For more general C*-algebras we obtain classes of injective and projective Hilbert C*-(bi-)modules.

Strict essential extensions of C*-algebras and Hilbert C*-modules

In the present paper we develop both ideas of D. Bakić and B. Gulja{š} and the categorical approach to multipliers from E.C. Lance's book and publications of the second author, for the introduction and study of left multipliers of Hilbert $C^*$-modules. Some properties and, in particular, the property of maximality among all strictly essential extensions of a Hilbert $C^*$-module for left multipliers are proved. Also relations between left essential and left strictly essential extensions in different contexts are obtained. Left essential and left strictly essential extensions of matrix algebras are considered. In the final paragraph the topological approach to the left multiplier theory of Hilbert $C^*$-modules is worked out.

Characterizing C*-algebras of compact operators by generic categorical properties of Hilbert C*-modules

B. Magajna and J. Schweizer showed in 1997 and 1999, respectively, that C*-algebras of compact operators can be characterized by the property that every norm-closed (and coinciding with its biorthogonal complement, resp.) submodule of every Hilbert C*-module over them is automatically an orthogonal summand. We find out further generic properties of the category of Hilbert C*-modules over C*-algebras which characterize precisely the C*-algebras of compact operators.

Frames in Hilbert C*-modules and C*-algebras

We present a general approach to a modular frame theory in C*-algebras and Hilbert C*-modules. The investigations rely on the idea of geometric dilation to standard Hilbert C*-modules over unital C*-algebras that possess orthonormal Hilbert bases, and of reconstruction of the frames by projections and by other bounded modular operators with suitable ranges. We obtain frame representations and decomposition theorems, as well as similarity and equivalence results for frames. Hilbert space frames and quasi-bases for conditional expectations of finite index on C*-algebras appear as special cases. Using a canonical categorical equivalence of Hilbert C*-modules over commutative C*-algebras and (F)Hilbert bundles the results find a reintepretation for frames in vector and (F)Hilbert bundles. Fields of applications are investigations on Cuntz-Krieger-Pimsner algebras, on conditional expectations of finite index, on various ranks of C*-algebras, on classical frame theory of Hilbert spaces (wavelet and Gabor frames), and others. 2001: In the introduction we refer to related publications in detail.

Injective Envelopes of $C^*$-algebras as Operator Modules

In this paper we give some characterizations of M. Hamana's injective envelope I(A) of a C*-algebra A in the setting of operator spaces and completely bounded maps. These characterizations lead to simplifications and generalizations of some known results concerning completely bounded projections onto C*-algebras. We prove that I(A) is rigid for completely bounded A-module maps. This rigidity yields a natural representation of many kinds of multipliers as multiplications by elements of I(A). In particular, we prove that the(n times iterated) local multiplier algebra of A embeds into I(A). Some remarks on local left/right/quasi multiplier algebras as subsets of I(A) are added.

A duality method in prediction theory of multivariate stationary sequences

Let W be an integrable positive Hermitian q x q -matrix valued function on the dual group of a discrete abelian group G such that W^{-1} is integrable. Generalizing results of T. Nakazi and of A. G. Miamee and M. Pourahmadi for q=1 we establish a correspondence between trigonometric approximation problems in L^2(W) and certain approximation problems in L^2(W^{-1}). The result is applied to prediction problems for q-variate stationary processes over G, in particular, to the case where G is the group of integers Z.

A module frame concept for Hilbert C*-modules

The goal of the present paper is a short introduction to a general module frame theory in C*-algebras and Hilbert C*-modules. The reported investigations rely on the idea of geometric dilation to standard Hilbert C*-modules over unital C*-algebras that possess orthonormal bases, and of reconstruction of the frames by projections and other bounded module operators with suitable ranges. We obtain frame representation and decomposition theorems, as well as similarity and equivalence results. The relative position of two and more frames in terms of being complementary or disjoint is investigated in detail. In the last section some recent results by P. G. Casazza are generalized to our setting. The Hilbert space situation appears as a special case. For detailled proofs we refer to another paper also contained in the ArXiv.

Modular frames for Hilbert C*-modules and symmetric approximation of frames

We give a comprehensive introduction to a general modular frame construction in Hilbert C*-modules and to related modular operators on them. The Hilbert space situation appears as a special case. The reported investigations rely on the idea of geometric dilation to standard Hilbert C*-modulesover unital C*-algebras that admit an orthonormal Riesz basis. Interrelations and applications to classical linear frame theory are indicated. As an application we describe the nature of families of operators {S_i} such that SUM_i S*_iS_i=id_H, where H is a Hilbert space. Resorting to frames in Hilbert spaces we discuss some measures for pairs of frames to be close to one another. Most of the measures are expressed in terms of norm-distances of different kinds of frame operators. In particular, the existence and uniqueness of the closest (normalized) tight frame to a given frame is investigated. For Riesz bases with certain restrictions the set of closetst tight frames often contains a multiple of its symmetric orthogonalization (i.e. Löwdin orthogonalization).

Hilbertian versus Hilbert W*-modules, and applications to $L^2$- and other invariants

Hilbert(ian) A-modules over finite von Neumann algebras A with a faithful normal trace state (from global analysis) and Hilbert W*-modules over A (from operator algebra theory) are compared, and a categorical equivalence is established. The correspondence between these two structures sheds new light on basic results in $L^2$-invariant theory providing alternative proofs. We indicate new invariants for finitely generated projective B-modules, where B is supposed any unital C*-algebra, (usually the full group C*-algebra $C^*(π)$ of the fundamental group $π=π_1(M)$ of a manifold $M$). The results are of interest to specialists in operator algebras and global analysis.
