Dependence between Path-length and Size in Random Digital Trees

We study the size and the external path length of random tries and show that they are asymptotically independent in the asymmetric case but strongly dependent with small periodic fluctuations in the symmetric case. Such an unexpected behavior is in sharp contrast to the previously known results on random tries that the size is totally positively correlated to the internal path length and that both tend to the same normal limit law. These two dependence examples provide concrete instances of bivariate normal distributions (as limit laws) whose correlation is $0$, $1$ and periodically oscillating. Moreover, the same type of behaviors is also clarified for other classes of digital trees such as bucket digital trees and Patricia tries.

The Asymmetric CFT Landscape in D=4,6,8 with Extended Supersymmetry

We study asymmetric simple-current extensions of Gepner models in dimensions $D=4,6,8$ with at least eight supercharges in the right-moving sector. The models obtained in an extensive stochastic computer search belong to a small number of different classes. These classes can be categorized as dimensional reductions, asymmetric orbifolds with $(-1)^{F_L}$, extra gauge enhancement and as coming from the super Higgs-effect. Models in the latter class are particularly interesting, as they may correspond to non-geometric flux compactifications.

Towards a Theory of Nonassociative Gravity

Violating the strong constraint of double field theory, non-geometric fluxes were argued to give rise to noncommutative/nonassociative structures. We derive in a rather pedestrian physicist way a differential geometry on the simplest nonassociative (phase-)space arising for a constant non-geometric R-flux. This provides a complementary presentation to the quasi-Hopf representation categorial one delivered by Barnes, Schenkel, Szabo in arXiv:1409.6331+1507.02792. As there, the notions of tensors, covariant derivative, torsion and curvature find a star-generalization. We continue the construction with the introduction of a star-metric and its star-inverse where, due to the nonassociativity, we encounter major deviations from the familiar structure. Comments on the Levi-Civita connection, a star-Einstein-Hilbert action and the relation to string theory are included, as well.

Dependence and phase changes in random $m$-ary search trees

We study the joint asymptotic behavior of the space requirement and the total path length (either summing over all root-key distances or over all root-node distances) in random $m$-ary search trees. The covariance turns out to exhibit a change of asymptotic behavior: it is essentially linear when $3\le m\le 13$ but becomes of higher order when $m\ge14$. Surprisingly, the corresponding asymptotic correlation coefficient tends to zero when $3\le m\le 26$ but is periodically oscillating for larger $m$. Such a less anticipated phenomenon is not exceptional and we extend the results in two directions: one for more general shape parameters, and the other for other classes of random log-trees such as fringe-balanced binary search trees and quadtrees. The methods of proof combine asymptotic transfer for the underlying recurrence relations with the contraction method.

Large field inflation and string moduli stabilization

Recent developments on large scale string moduli stabilization via non-geometric fluxes are reviewed. In the framework of type IIB orientifolds on fluxed Calabi-Yau manifolds, the existence of so-called flux-scaling minima provides a good starting point for the realization of parametrically controlled models of F-term axion monodromy inflation.

A Flux-Scaling Scenario for High-Scale Moduli Stabilization in String Theory

Tree-level moduli stabilization via geometric and non-geometric fluxes in type IIB orientifolds on Calabi-Yau manifolds is investigated. The focus is on stable non-supersymmetric minima, where all moduli are fixed except for some massless axions. The scenario includes the purely axionic orientifold-odd moduli. A set of vacua allowing for parametric control over the moduli vacuum expectation values and their masses is presented, featuring a specific scaling with the fluxes. Uplift mechanisms and supersymmetry breaking soft masses on MSSM-like D7-branes are discussed as well. This scenario provides a complete effective framework for realizing the idea of F-term axion monodromy inflation in string theory. It is argued that, with all masses close to the Planck and GUT scales, one is confronted with working at the threshold of controlling all mass hierarchies.

Towards Axionic Starobinsky-like Inflation in String Theory

It is shown that Starobinsky-like potentials can be realized in non-geometric flux compactifications of string theory, where the inflaton involves an axion whose shift symmetry can protect UV-corrections to the scalar potential. For that purpose we evaluate the backreacted, uplifted F-term axion-monodromy potential, which interpolates between a quadratic and a Starobinsky-like form. Limitations due to the requirements of having a controlled approximation of the UV theory and of realizing single-field inflation are discussed.

On Kurzweil's 0-1 Law in Inhomogeneous Diophantine Approximation

We give a sufficient and necessary condition such that for almost all $s\in{\mathbb R}$ \[ \|nθ-s\|<ψ(n)\qquad\text{for infinitely many}\ n\in{\mathbb N}, \] where $θ$ is fixed and $ψ(n)$ is a positive, non-increasing sequence. This improves upon an old result of Kurzweil and contains several previous results as special cases: two theorems of Kurzweil, a theorem of Tseng and a recent result of the second author. Moreover, we also discuss an analogue of our result in the field of formal Laurent series which has similar consequences.

Non-associative Deformations of Geometry in Double Field Theory

Non-geometric string backgrounds were proposed to be related to a non-associative deformation of the space-time geometry. In the flux formulation of double field theory (DFT), the structure of mathematically possible non-associative deformations is analyzed in detail. It is argued that on-shell there should not be any violation of associativity in the effective DFT action. For imposing either the strong or the weaker closure constraint we discuss two possible non-associative deformations of DFT featuring two different ways how on-shell associativity can still be kept.

A binomial splitting process in connection with corner parking problems

A special type of binomial splitting process is studied. Such a process can be used to model a high-dimensional corner parking problem, as well as the depth of random PATRICIA tries (a special class of digital tree data structures). The later also has natural interpretations in terms of distinct values in iid geometric random variables and the occupancy problem in urn models. The corresponding distribution is marked by logarithmic mean and bounded variance, which is oscillating, if the binomial parameter $p$ is not equal to 1/2, and asymptotic to 1 in the unbiased case. Also, the limiting distribution does not exist owing to periodic fluctuations.

An analytic approach to the asymptotic variance of trie statistics and related structures

We develop analytic tools for the asymptotics of general trie statistics, which are particularly advantageous for clarifying the asymptotic variance. Many concrete examples are discussed for which new Fourier expansions are given. The tools are also useful for other splitting processes with an underlying binomial distribution. We specially highlight Philippe Flajolet's contribution in the analysis of these random structures.

Asymptotic variance of random symmetric digital search trees

Asymptotics of the variances of many cost measures in random digital search trees are often notoriously messy and involved to obtain. A new approach is proposed to facilitate such an analysis for several shape parameters on random symmetric digital search trees. Our approach starts from a more careful normalization at the level of Poisson generating functions, which then provides an asymptotically equivalent approximation to the variance in question. Several new ingredients are also introduced such as a combined use of the Laplace and Mellin transforms and a simple, mechanical technique for justifying the analytic de-Poissonization procedures involved. The methodology we develop can be easily adapted to many other problems with an underlying binomial distribution. In particular, the less expected and somewhat surprising $n(\log n)^2$-variance for certain notions of total path-length is also clarified.
