Proceedings of the Low-$x$ 2021 International Workshop

The purpose of the Low-$x$ Workshop series is to stimulate discussions between experimentalists and theorists in diffractive hadronic physics, QCD dynamics at low $x$, parton saturation, and exciting problems in QCD at HERA, Tevatron, LHC, RHIC, and the future EIC. The central topics of the workshop, summarized in the current Proceedings, were: Diffraction in ep and e-ion collisions (including EIC physics); Diffraction and photon-exchange in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions; Spin Physics; Low-$x$ PDFs, forward physics, and hadronic final states. This Workshop has been the XXVIII edition in the series of the workshop.

A Forward Multiparticle Spectrometer for the LHC: Hadron spectra and Long-lived particle search

I describe a possible Forward Multiparticle Spectrometer (FMS) that could be installed downstream of the superconducting recombination dipole D1 in Run 4, from z = 96 m - 126 m to measure multi-TeV hadron spectra in low luminosity p + p collisions at Rt(s) = 14 TeV, as well as p + O and O + O collisions as relevant for cosmic ray showers. Light antinuclei and charmed hadrons at high Feynman xF can be measured, both of importance for astrophysics. At the full high luminosity HL-LHC a search for new long-lived neutral particles (LLPs) decaying in a 20 m long, 70 cm diameter vacuum pipe to visible decay modes (including gamma+gamma, e+e-, mu+mu-, tau+tau-, ccbar and jets) can be made. The FMS is especially well suited for LLPs with 1 GeV < M(X)< 10 GeV and lifetimes c.tau from about 10 m to several km. I discuss this as a possible addition to CMS but it has no formal approval yet, therefore the talk is not given on behalf of CMS.

Hadron Spectroscopy in Double Pomeron Exchange Experiments

Central exclusive production in hadron-hadron collisions at high energies, for example p + p -> p + X + p, where the "+" represents a large rapidity gap, is a valuable process for spectroscopy of mesonic states X. At collider energies the gaps can be large enough to be dominated by pomeron exchange, and then the quantum numbers of the state X are restricted. Isoscalar JPC = 0++ and 2++ mesons are selected, and our understanding of these spectra is incomplete. In particular, soft pomeron exchanges favor gluon-dominated states such as glueballs, which are expected in QCD but not yet well established. I will review some published data.

Central exclusive production at the Tevatron

The Collider Detector at Fermilab, CDF, observed for the first time in hadron-hadron collisions photon-photon to e+e- and mu+mu-, photon-pomeron to J/psi and psi(2S), and pomeron-pomeron to photon+photon and to chi_c. Exclusive pi+pi- production by double pomeron exchange was also measured at p+pbar CM energies 900 GeV and 1960 GeV, showing f0 and f2 resonance structures.

Central exclusive production at the Tevatron

In CDF we have observed several exclusive processes: 2-photon --> e+e- and --> mu+mu-, photon+pomeron --> J/psi and psi(2S), and pomeron+pomeron --> chi_c. The cross sections agree with QED, HERA photoproduction data, and theoretical estimates of gg --> chi_c with another gluon exchanged to screen the color. This observation of exclusive chi_c, together with earlier observations of exclusive dijets and exclusive 2-photon candidates, support some theoretical predictions for p+p --> p+H+p at the LHC. Exclusive dileptons offer the best means of precisely calibrating forward proton spectrometers.

QCD and Hard Diffraction at the LHC

As an introduction to QCD at the LHC I give an overview of QCD at the Tevatron, emphasizing the high Q^2 frontier which will be taken over by the LHC. After describing briefly the LHC detectors I discuss high mass diffraction, in particular central exclusive production of Higgs and vector boson pairs. I introduce the FP420 project to measure the scattered protons 420m downstream of ATLAS and CMS.

Double Pomeron Physics at the LHC

I discuss central exclusive production, otherwise known as Double Pomeron Exchange, DPE, from the ISR through the Tevatron to the LHC. There I emphasize the interest of exclusive Higgs and WW/ZZ production.

The White Pomeron, Color Sextet Quarks and Cosmic Ray Anomalies

I introduce the critical pomeron theory ("white pomeron") proposed by Alan White, with its prediction of excessive WW and ZZ production at the LHC especially by double pomeron exchange (DPE), which is a crucial test. This theory implies dramatic effects in cosmic rays, possibly explaining the knee and high ET jet excesses. Some of the ultra high energy (UHE) cosmic rays may be "Superbaryons" made of color sextet Quarks, and most (all?) UHE collisions in the atmosphere may produce W's and Z's.

Diffractive Structure Functions at the Tevatron

We have studied events with a high-x_F antiproton and two central jets with E_T>7 GeV in CDF, in p+p_bar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1800 GeV. From the di-jet kinematics we derive the diffractive structure function of the antiproton. We also find an excess of events with a rapidity gap at least 3.5 units wide in the proton direction, which we interpret as di-jet production in double pomeron exchange events. We find non-factorization between our single diffractive results and (a) diffraction in ep at HERA (b) double pomeron exchange.
