A large-scale regularity theory for the Monge-Ampere equation with rough data and application to the optimal matching problem

The aim of this paper is to obtain quantitative bounds for solutions to the optimal matching problem in dimension two. These bounds show that up to a logarithmically divergent shift, the optimal transport maps are close to be the identity at every scale. These bounds allow us to pass to the limit as the system size goes to infinity and construct a locally optimal coupling between the Lebesgue measure and the Poisson point process which retains the stationarity properties of the Poisson point process only at the level of second-order differences. Our quantitative bounds are obtained through a Campanato iteration scheme based on a deterministic and a stochastic ingredient. The deterministic part, which can be seen as our main contribution, is a regularity result for Monge-Ampère equations with rough right-hand side. Since we believe that it could be useful in other contexts, we prove it for general space dimensions. The stochastic part is a concentration result for the optimal matching problem which builds on previous work by Ambrosio, Stra and Trevisan.

Self-similar minimizers of a branched transport functional

We solve here completely an irrigation problem from a Dirac mass to the Lebesgue measure. The functional we consider is a two dimensional analog of a functional previously derived in the study of branched patterns in type-I superconductors. The minimizer we obtain is a self-similar tree.

A branched transport limit of the Ginzburg-Landau functional

We study the Ginzburg-Landau model of type-I superconductors in the regime of small external magnetic fields. We show that, in an appropriate asymptotic regime, flux patterns are described by a simplified branched transportation functional. We derive the simplified functional from the full Ginzburg-Landau model rigorously via $Γ$-convergence. The detailed analysis of the limiting procedure and the study of the limiting functional lead to a precise understanding of the multiple scales contained in the model.

A gradient flow approach to relaxation rates for the multi-dimensional Cahn-Hilliard equation

The aim of this paper is to study relaxation rates for the Cahn-Hilliard equation in dimension larger than one. We follow the approach of Otto and Westdickenberg based on the gradient flow structure of the equation and establish differential and algebraic relationships between the energy, the dissipation, and the squared $H^{--1}$ distance to a kink. This leads to a scale separation of the dynamics into two different stages: a first fast phase of the order $t^{ -- 1/2}$ where one sees convergence to some kink, followed by a slow relaxation phase with rate $t^{-- 1/ 4}$ where convergence to the centered kink is observed.

A Ginzburg-Landau model with topologically induced free discontinuities

We study a variational model which combines features of the Ginzburg-Landau model in 2D and of the Mumford-Shah functional. As in the classical Ginzburg-Landau theory, a prescribed number of point vortices appear in the small energy regime; the model allows for discontinuities, and the energy penalizes their length. The novel phenomenon here is that the vortices have a fractional degree $1/m$ with $m\geq 2$ prescribed. Those vortices must be connected by line discontinuities to form clusters of total integer degrees. The vortices and line discontinuities are therefore coupled through a topological constraint. As in the Ginzburg-Landau model, the energy is parameterized by a small length scale $\varepsilon>0$. We perform a complete $Γ$-convergence analysis of the model as $\varepsilon\downarrow0$ in the small energy regime. We then study the structure of minimizers of the limit problem. In particular, we show that the line discontinuities of a minimizer solve a variant of the Steiner problem. We finally prove that for small $\varepsilon>0$, the minimizers of the original problem have the same structure away from the limiting vortices.

A variational proof of partial regularity for optimal transportation maps

We provide a new proof of the known partial regularity result for the optimal transportation map (Brenier map) between two sets. Contrary to the existing regularity theory for the Monge-Amp{è}re equation, which is based on the maximum principle, our approach is purely variational. By constructing a competitor on the level of the Eulerian (Benamou-Brenier) formulation, we show that locally, the velocity is close to the gradient of a harmonic function provided the transportation cost is small. We then translate back to the Lagrangian description and perform a Campanato iteration to obtain an $ε$-regularity result.

Equilibrium shapes of charged droplets and related problems: (mostly) a review

We review some recent results on the equilibrium shapes of charged liquid drops. We show that the natural variational model is ill-posed and how this can be overcome by either restricting the class of competitors or by adding penalizations in the functional. The original contribution of this note is twofold. First, we prove existence of an optimal distribution of charge for a conducting drop subject to an external electric field. Second, we prove that there exists no optimal conducting drop in this setting.

On minimizers of an isoperimetric problem with long-range interactions under a convexity constraint

We study a variational problem modeling the behavior at equilibrium of charged liquid drops under convexity constraint. After proving well-posedness of the model, we show C 1,1-regularity of minimizers for the Coulombic interaction in dimension two. As a by-product we obtain that balls are the unique minimizers for small charge. Eventually, we study the asymptotic behavior of minimizers, as the charge goes to infinity.

On the optimality of stripes in a variational model with non-local interactions

We study pattern formation for a variational model displaying competition between a local term penalizing interfaces and a non-local term favoring oscillations. By means of a $Γ$--convergence analysis, we show that as the parameter J converges to a critical value J c, the minimizers converge to periodic one-dimensional stripes. A similar analysis has been previously performed by other authors for related discrete systems. In that context, a central point is that each " angle " comes with a strictly positive contribution to the energy. Since this is not anymore the case in the continuous setting, we need to overcome this difficulty by slicing arguments and a rigidity result.

Phase segregation for binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study the strong segregation limit for mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates modelled by a Gross-Pitaievskii functional. Our first main result is that in presence of a trapping potential, for different intracomponent strengths, the Thomas-Fermi limit is sufficient to determine the shape of the minimizers. Our second main result is that for asymptotically equal intracomponent strengths, one needs to go to the next order. The relevant limit is a weighted isoperimetric problem. We then study the minimizers of this limit problem, proving radial symmetry or symmetry breaking for different values of the parameters. We finally show that in the absence of a confining potential, even for non-equal intracomponent strengths, one needs to study a related isoperimetric problem to gain information about the shape of the minimizers.

New bounds for the inhomogenous Burgers and the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equations

We give a substantially simplified proof of near-optimal estimate on the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation from [F. Otto, "Optimal bounds on the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation", JFA 2009], at the same time slightly improving the result. The result in the above cited paper relied on two ingredients: a regularity estimate for capillary Burgers and an a novel priori estimate for the inhomogeneous inviscid Burgers equation, which works out that in many ways the conservative transport nonlinearity acts as a coercive term. It is the proof of the second ingredient that we substantially simplify by proving a modified Kármán-Howarth-Monin identity for solutions of the inhomogeneous inviscid Burgers equation. This gives a new interpretation of the results obtained in [F. Golse, B. Perthame "Optimal regularizing effect for scalar conservation laws", Rev. Mat. Iber., 2013].

Study of island formation in epitaxially strained films on unbounded domains

We consider a variational model for the formation of islands in heteroepitaxial growth on unbounded domains. We first derive the scaling regimes of the minimal energy in terms of the volume of the film and the amplitude of the crystallographic misfit. For small volumes, non-existence of minimizers is then proven. This corresponds to the experimentally observed wetting effect. On the other hand, we show the existence of minimizers for large volumes. We finally study the asymptotic behavior of the optimal shapes.

Sharp interface limit for two components Bose-Einstein condensates

We study a double Cahn-Hilliard type functional related to the Gross-Pitaevskii energy of two-components Bose-Einstein condensates. In the case of large but same order intercomponent and intracomponent coupling strengths, we prove $Γ$-convergence to a perimeter minimisation functional with an inhomogeneous surface tension. We study the asymptotic behavior of the surface tension as the ratio between the intercomponent and intracomponent coupling strengths becomes very small or very large. We obtain as a consequence, symmetry breaking of the minimisers for the harmonic potential when this radio is sufficiently large.

Existence and stability for a non-local isoperimetric model of charged liquid drops

We consider a variational problem related to the shape of charged liquid drops at equilibrium. We show that this problem never admits global minimizers with respect to $L^1$ perturbations preserving the volume. This leads us to study it in more regular classes of competitors, for which we show existence of minimizers. We then prove that the ball is the unique solution for sufficiently small charges.

Fine properties of the subdifferential for a class of one-homogeneous functionals

We collect here some known results on the subdifferential of one-homogeneous functionals, which are anisotropic and nonhomogeneous variants of the total variation and establish a new relationship between Lebesgue points of the calibrating field and regular points of the level lines of the corresponding calibrated function.

Nucleation barriers at corners for cubic-to-tetragonal phase transformation

We are interested in the energetic cost of a martensitic inclusion of volume $V$ in austenite for the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transformation. In contrast with the work of [Knüpfer, Kohn, Otto: Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 66 (2013), no. 6, 867--904], we consider domain with a corner and obtain a better scaling law for the minimal energy ($E_{min} \sim \min(V^{2/3},V^{7/9})$). Our predictions are in a good agreement with physical experiments where nucleation of martensite is usually observed near the corners of the specimen.

Existence and qualitative properties of isoperimetric sets in periodic media

We review and extend here some recent results on the existence of minimal surfaces and isoperimetric sets in non homogeneous and anisotropic periodic media. We also describe the qualitative properties of the homogenized surface tension, also known as stable norm (or minimal action) in Weak KAM theory. In particular we investigate its strict convexity and differentiability properties.

Volume-constrained minimizers for the prescribed curvature problem in periodic media

We establish existence of compact minimizers of the prescribed mean curvature problem with volume constraint in periodic media. As a consequence, we construct compact approximate solutions to the prescribed mean curvature equation. We also show convergence after rescaling of the volume-constrained minimizers towards a suitable Wulff Shape, when the volume tends to infinity.
