Double Kerr-Schild spacetimes and the Newman-Penrose map

The Newman-Penrose map, which is closely related to the classical double copy, associates certain exact solutions of Einstein's equations with self-dual solutions of the vacuum Maxwell equations. Here we initiate an extension of the Newman-Penrose map to a broader class of spacetimes. As an example, we apply principles from the Newman-Penrose map to associate a self-dual gauge field to the Kerr-Taub-NUT-(A)dS spacetime and we show that the result agrees with previously studied examples of classical double copies. The corresponding field strength exhibits a discrete electric-magnetic duality that is distinct from its (Hodge star) self-dual property.

A New Heavy Flavor Program for the Future Electron-Ion Collider

The proposed high-energy and high-luminosity Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will provide one of the cleanest environments to precisely determine the nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) in a wide $x$-$Q^{2}$ range. Heavy flavor production at the EIC provides access to nPDFs in the poorly constrained high Bjorken-$x$ region, allows us to study the quark and gluon fragmentation processes, and constrains parton energy loss in cold nuclear matter. Scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory are developing a new physics program to study heavy flavor production, flavor tagged jets, and heavy flavor hadron-jet correlations in the nucleon/nucleus going direction at the future EIC. The proposed measurements will provide a unique way to explore the flavor dependent fragmentation functions and energy loss in a heavy nucleus. They will constrain the initial-state effects that are critical for the interpretation of previous and ongoing heavy ion measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. We show an initial conceptual design of the proposed Forward Silicon Tracking (FST) detector at the EIC, which is essential to carry out the heavy flavor measurements. We further present initial feasibility studies/simulations of heavy flavor hadron reconstruction using the proposed FST.

Vector Bosons in the Randall-Sundrum 2 and Lykken-Randall models and unparticles

Unparticle behavior is shown to be realized in the Randall-Sundrum 2 (RS 2) and the Lykken-Randall (LR) brane scenarios when brane-localized Standard Model currents are coupled to a massive vector field living in the five-dimensional warped background of the RS 2 model. By the AdS/CFT dictionary these backgrounds exhibit certain properties of the unparticle CFT at large N_c and strong 't Hooft coupling. Within the RS 2 model we also examine and contrast in detail the scalar and vector position-space correlators at intermediate and large distances. Unitarity of brane-to-brane scattering amplitudes is seen to imply a necessary and sufficient condition on the positivity of the bulk mass, which leads to the well-known unitarity bound on vector operators in a CFT.

On the RS2 realization of unparticles

To facilitate the study of the unparticle scenario it is very desirable to have a treatable model realizing it in four dimensions. Motivated by the general idea of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we consider a simple construction: the Randall-Sundrum 2 (single brane) setup with the Standard Model fields on the brane and a massive vector field in the warped bulk. We show that in this model the known properties of vector unparticles -- the nontrivial phase of the CFT propagator, the necessity and dominance of contact interactions, the unitarity constraint on the conformal dimension of the operator, and the tensor structure dictated by conformal symmetry -- follow by simple inspection of the brane-to-brane propagator. The phase has a physical interpretation as controlling the rate of escape of unparticles into the extra dimension. Requiring the correct sign for the imaginary part of the longitudinal polarization of the propagator, we obtain the unitarity condition m_5^2 >= 0, which, unlike in the scalar case, is unchanged from flat space. This condition results in the unitarity bound d_V >= 3, or, more generally, d_V >= D-1 for a vector unparticle in D-dimensional space. It is instructive to consider the RS 2 propagator in (Euclidean) position space: at large distances it behaves as a pure CFT propagator, while at short distances it turns into the 5d flat space propagator. The latter is softer than the former, thus regulating the would-be divergences of the spectral integral and turning the "contact" terms seen at low energies into finite-range interactions. Upon Fourier transforming to momentum space, one finds that at low momenta the CFT piece is subdominant to the "contact" interactions.

Probing Supersymmetry With Third-Generation Cascade Decays

The chiral structure of supersymmetric particle couplings involving third generation Standard Model fermions depends on left-right squark and slepton mixings as well as gaugino-higgsino mixings. The shapes and intercorrelations of invariant mass distributions of a first or second generation lepton with bottoms and taus arising from adjacent branches of SUSY cascade decays are shown to be a sensitive probe of this chiral structure. All possible cascade decays that can give rise to such correlations within the MSSM are considered. For bottom-lepton correlations the distinctive structure of the invariant mass distributions distinguishes between decays originating from stop or sbottom squarks through either an intermediate chargino or neutralino. For decay through a chargino the spins of the stop and chargino are established by the form of the distribution. When the bottom charge is signed through soft muon tagging, the structure of the same-sign and opposite-sign invariant mass distributions depends on a set function of left-right and gaugino-higgsino mixings, as well as establishes the spins of all the superpartners in the sequential two-body cascade decay. Tau-lepton and tau-tau invariant mass distributions arising from MSSM cascade decays are likewise systematically considered with particular attention to their dependence on tau polarization. All possible tau-lepton and tau-tau distributions are plotted using a semi-analytic model for hadronic one-prong taus. Algorithms for fitting tau-tau and tau-lepton distributions to data are suggested.

Minimum Length from First Principles

We show that no device or gedanken experiment is capable of measuring a distance less than the Planck length. By "measuring a distance less than the Planck length" we mean, technically, resolve the eigenvalues of the position operator to within that accuracy. The only assumptions in our argument are causality, the uncertainty principle from quantum mechanics and a dynamical criteria for gravitational collapse from classical general relativity called the hoop conjecture. The inability of any gedanken experiment to measure a sub-Planckian distance suggests the existence of a minimal length.

CPT and Other Symmetries in String/M Theory

We initiate a search for non-perturbative consistency conditions in M theory. Some non-perturbative conditions are already known in Type I theories; we review these and search for others. We focus principally on possible anomalies in discrete symmetries. It is generally believed that discrete symmetries in string theories are gauge symmetries, so anomalies would provide evidence for inconsistencies. Using the orbifold cosmic string construction, we give some evidence that the symmetries we study are gauged. We then search for anomalies in discrete symmetries in a variety of models, both with and without supersymmetry. In symmetric orbifold models we extend previous searches, and show in a variety of examples that all anomalies may be canceled by a Green-Schwarz mechanism. We explore some asymmetric orbifold constructions and again find that all anomalies may be canceled this way. Then we turn to Type IIB orientifold models where it is known that even perturbative anomalies are non-universal. In the examples we study, by combining geometric discrete symmetries with continuous gauge symmetries, one may define non-anomalous discrete symmetries already in perturbation theory; in other cases, the anomalies are universal. Finally, we turn to the question of CPT conservation in string/M theory. It is well known that CPT is conserved in all string perturbation expansions; here in a number of examples for which a non-perturbative formulation is available we provide evidence that it is conserved exactly.

Minimum Length from Quantum Mechanics and Classical General Relativity

We derive fundamental limits on measurements of position, arising from quantum mechanics and classical general relativity. First, we show that any primitive probe or target used in an experiment must be larger than the Planck length, $l_P$. This suggests a Planck-size {\it minimum ball} of uncertainty in any measurement. Next, we study interferometers (such as LIGO) whose precision is much finer than the size of any individual components and hence are not obviously limited by the minimum ball. Nevertheless, we deduce a fundamental limit on their accuracy of order $l_P$. Our results imply a {\it device independent} limit on possible position measurements.

Brane World Susy Breaking from String/M Theory

String and M-theory realizations of brane world supersymmetry breaking scenarios are considered in which visible sector Standard Model fields are confined on a brane, with hidden sector supersymmetry breaking isolated on a distant brane. In calculable examples with an internal manifold of any volume the Kahler potential generically contains brane--brane non-derivative contact interactions coupling the visible and hidden sectors and is not of the no-scale sequestered form. This leads to non-universal scalar masses and without additional assumptions about flavor symmetries may in general induce dangerous sflavor violation even though the Standard Model and supersymmetry branes are physically separated. Deviations from the sequestered form are dictated by bulk supersymmetry and can in most cases be understood as arising from exchange of bulk supergravity fields between branes or warping of the internal geometry. Unacceptable visible sector tree-level tachyons arise in many models but may be avoided in certain classes of compactifications. Anomaly mediated and gaugino mediated contributions to scalar masses are sub-dominant except in special circumstances such as a flat or AdS pure five--dimensional bulk geometry without bulk vector multiplets.

Comments on Non-Commutative Phenomenology

It is natural to ask whether non-commutative geometry plays a role in four dimensional physics. By performing explicit computations in various toy models, we show that quantum effects lead to violations of Lorentz invariance at the level of operators of dimension three or four. The resulting constraints are very stringent.

Brane World Susy Breaking

In brane world models of nature, supersymmetry breaking is often isolated on a distant brane in a higher dimensional space. The form of the Kahler potential in generic string and M-theory brane world backgrounds is shown to give rise to tree-level non-universal squark and slepton masses. This results from the exchange of bulk supergravity fields and warping of the internal geometry. This is contrary to the notion that bulk locality gives rise to a sequestered no-scale form of the Kahler potential with vanishing tree-level masses and solves the supersymmetric flavor problem. As a result, a radiatively generated anomaly mediated superpartner spectrum is not a generic outcome of these theories.

Supersymmetric Relations Among Electromagnetic Dipole Operators

Supersymmetric contributions to all leptonic electromagnetic dipole operators have essentially identical diagramatic structure. With approximate slepton universality this allows the muon anomalous magnetic moment to be related to the electron electric dipole moment in terms of supersymmetric phases, and to radiative flavor changing lepton decays in terms of small violations of slepton universality. If the current discrepancy between the measured and Standard Model values of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is due to supersymmetry, the current bound on the electron electric dipole moment then implies that the phase of the electric dipole operator is less than $2 \times 10^{-3}$. Likewise the current bound on $μ\to e γ$ decay implies that the fractional selectron-smuon mixing in the left-left mass squared matrix, $δm_{\smuon \selectron}^2 / m_{\slepton}^2$, is less than $10^{-4}$. These relations and constraints are fairly insensitive to details of the superpartner spectrum for moderate to large $\tan β$.

Cosmology of Brane Models with Radion Stabilization

We analyze the cosmology of the Randall-Sundrum model and that of compact brane models in general in the presence of a radius stabilization mechanism. We find that the expansion of our universe is generically in agreement with the expected effective four dimensional description. The constraint (which is responsible for the appearance of non-conventional cosmologies in these models) that must be imposed on the matter densities on the two branes in the theory without a stabilized radius is a consequence of requiring a static solution even in the absence of stabilization. Such constraints disappear in the presence of a stablizing potential, and the ordinary FRW (Friedmann-Robertson-Walker) equations are reproduced, with the expansion driven by the sum of the physical values of the energy densities on the two branes and in the bulk. For the case of the Randall-Sundrum model we examine the kinematics of the radion field, and find that corrections to the standard FRW equations are small for temperatures below the weak scale. We find that the radion field has renormalizable and unsuppressed couplings to Standard Model particles after electroweak symmetry breaking. These couplings may have important implications for collider searches. We comment on the possibility that matter off the TeV brane could serve as a dark matter candidate.

Cosmology of One Extra Dimension with Localized Gravity

We examine the cosmology of the two recently proposed scenarios for a five dimensional universe with localized gravity. We find that the scenario with a non-compact fifth dimension is potentially viable, while the scenario which might solve the hierarchy problem predicts a contracting universe, leading to a variety of cosmological problems.

Signals of Supersymmetric Lepton Flavor Violation at the LHC

In a generic supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, there will be lepton flavor violation at a neutral gaugino vertex due to misalignment between the lepton Yukawa couplings and the slepton soft masses. Sleptons produced at the LHC through the cascade decays of squarks and gluinos can give a sizable number of events with 4 leptons. This channel could give a clean signature of supersymmetric lepton flavor violation under conditions which are identified.

Late Inflation and the Moduli Problem of Sub-Millimeter Dimensions

We consider a recent model with sub-millimeter sized extra dimensions, where the field that determines the size of the extra dimensions (the radion) also acts as an inflaton. The radion is also a stable modulus, and its coherent oscillations can potentially overclose the Universe. It has been suggested that a second round of late inflation can solve this problem, however we find that this scenario does not allow for sufficient reheating of the Universe.

A Non-renormalization Theorem for the Wilsonian Gauge Couplings in Supersymmetric Theories

We show that the holomorphic Wilsonian beta-function of a renormalizable asymptotically free supersymmetric gauge theory with an arbitrary semi-simple gauge group, matter content, and renormalizable superpotential is exhausted at 1-loop with no higher loops and no non-perturbative contributions. This is a non-perturbative extension of the well known result of Shifman and Vainshtein.
