Higher de Rham epsilon factors

This article is devoted to the study of a higher-dimensional generalisation of de Rham epsilon lines. To a holonomic $D$-module $M$ on a smooth variety $X$ and a generic tuple of $1$-form $(ν_1,\dots,ν_n)$, we associate a point of the $K$-theory space $K(X,Z)$. If $X$ is proper this $K$-theory class is related to the de Rham cohomology $RΓ_{dR}(X,M)$. The novel feature of our construction is that $Z$ is allowed to be of dimension $0$. Furthermore, we allow the tuple of $1$-forms to vary in families, and observe that this leads naturally to a crystal akin to the epsilon connection for curves. Our approach is based on combining a construction of Patel with a homotopy invariance property of algebraic $K$-theory with respect to $(\mathbb{P}^1,\infty)$. This homotopical viewpoint leads us naturally to the definition of an epsilon connection in higher dimensions. Along the way we prove the compatibility of Patel's epsilon factors with the graded lines defined by Deligne and Beilinson--Bloch--Esnault in the case of curves.

The $A_\infty$-structure of the index map

Let $F$ be a local field with residue field $k$. The classifying space of $GL_n(F)$ comes canonically equipped with a map to the delooping of the $K$-theory space of $k$. Passing to loop spaces, such a map abstractly encodes a homotopy coherently associative map of A-infinity-spaces $GL_n(F)\to K_k$. Using a generalized Waldhausen construction, we construct an explicit model built for the $A_\infty$-structure of this map, built from nested systems of lattices in $F^n$. More generally, we construct this model in the framework of Tate objects in exact categories, with finite dimensional vector spaces over local fields as a motivating example.

The Index Map in Algebraic K-Theory

For a ring $R$, we construct a universal $K_R$-torsor $\mathcal{T}_R\to K_{Tate(R)}$ on the $K$-theory space of Tate $R$-modules. This torsor is closely related to canonical central extensions of loop groups. Just like classical loop group theory has features of $K$-theory (e.g. determinant bundles, tame symbol cocycle for Kac-Moody extension), the $K$-theory torsor relates higher loop groups with higher $K$-theory. We study the classifying "index" map of this torsor in detail. We explain how it arises in analogy with the classical index map of Fredholm operators, and we relate the $K$-theory torsor to previously studied dimension and determinant torsors.

Moduli of flat connections in positive characteristic

Exploiting the description of rings of differential operators as Azumaya algebras on cotangent bundles, we show that the moduli stack of flat connections on a curve (allowed to acquire orbifold points) defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic is étale locally equivalent to a moduli stack of Higgs bundles over the Hitchin base. We then study the interplay with stability and generalize a result of Laszlo-Pauly, concerning properness of the Hitchin map. Using Arinkin's autoduality of compactified Jacobians we extend the main result of Bezrukavnikov-Braverman, the Langlands correspondence for D-modules in positive characteristic for smooth spectral curves, to the locus of integral spectral curves.

Cohomologically rigid local systems and integrality

We prove that the monodromy of an irreducible cohomologically complex rigid local system with finite determinant and quasi-unipotent local monodromies at infinity on a smooth quasiprojective complex variety $X$ is integral. This answers positively a special case of a conjecture by Carlos Simpson. On a smooth projective variety, the argument relies on Drinfeld's theorem on the existence of $\ell$-adic companions over a finite field. When the variety is quasiprojective, one has in addition to control the weights and the monodromy at infinity.

Geometric and analytic structures on the higher adèles

The adèles of a scheme have local components - these are topological higher local fields. The topology plays a large role since Yekutieli showed in 1992 that there can be an abundance of inequivalent topologies on a higher local field and no canonical way to pick one. Using the datum of a topology, one can isolate a special class of continuous endomorphisms. Quite differently, one can bypass topology entirely and single out special endomorphisms (global Beilinson-Tate operators) from the geometry of the scheme. Yekutieli's "Conjecture 0.12" proposes that these two notions agree. We prove this.

Adelic Descent Theory

A result of André Weil allows one to describe rank $n$ vector bundles on a smooth complete algebraic curve up to isomorphism via a double quotient of the set $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A})$ of regular matrices over the ring of adèles (over algebraically closed fields, this result is also known to extend to $G$-torsors for a reductive algebraic group $G$). In the present paper we develop analogous adelic descriptions for vector and principal bundles on arbitrary Noetherian schemes, by proving an adelic descent theorem for perfect complexes. We show that for Beilinson's co-simplicial ring of adèles $\mathbb{A}_X^{\bullet}$, we have an equivalence $\mathsf{Perf}(X) \simeq |\mathsf{Perf}(\mathbb{A}_X^{\bullet})|$ between perfect complexes on $X$ and cartesian perfect complexes for $\mathbb{A}_X^{\bullet}$. Using the Tannakian formalism for symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories, we conclude that a Noetherian scheme can be reconstructed from the co-simplicial ring of adèles. We view this statement as a scheme-theoretic analogue of Gelfand--Naimark's reconstruction theorem for locally compact topological spaces from their ring of continuous functions. Several results for categories of perfect complexes over (a strong form of) flasque sheaves of algebras are established, which might be of independent interest.

Relative Tate Objects and Boundary Maps in the K-Theory of Coherent Sheaves

We investigate the properties of relative analogues of admissible Ind, Pro, and elementary Tate objects for pairs of exact categories, and give criteria for those categories to be abelian. A relative index map is introduced, and as an application we deduce a description for boundary morphisms in the K-theory of coherent sheaves on Noetherian schemes.

Operator ideals in Tate objects

Tate's central extension originates from 1968 and has since found many applications to curves. In the 80s Beilinson found an n-dimensional generalization: cubically decomposed algebras, based on ideals of bounded and discrete operators in ind-pro limits of vector spaces. Kato and Beilinson independently defined '(n-)Tate categories' whose objects are formal iterated ind-pro limits in general exact categories. We show that the endomorphism algebras of such objects often carry a cubically decomposed structure, and thus a (higher) Tate central extension. Even better, under very strong assumptions on the base category, the n-Tate category turns out to be just a category of projective modules over this type of algebra.

Tate Objects in Exact Categories (with appendix by Jan \vS\vtov\'ı\vcek and Jan Trlifaj)

We study elementary Tate objects in an exact category. We characterize the category of elementary Tate objects as the smallest sub-category of admissible Ind-Pro objects which contains the categories of admissible Ind-objects and admissible Pro-objects, and which is closed under extensions. We compare Beilinson's approach to Tate modules to Drinfeld's. We establish several properties of the Sato Grassmannian of an elementary Tate object in an idempotent complete exact category (e.g. it is a directed poset). We conclude with a brief treatment of n-Tate modules and n-dimensional adèles. An appendix due to J. \vS\vtov\'ı\vcek and J. Trlifaj identifies the category of flat Mittag-Leffler modules with the idempotent completion of the category of admissible Ind-objects in the category of finitely generated projective modules.

Moduli stacks of maps for supermanifolds

We consider the moduli problem of stable maps from a Riemann surface into a supermanifold; in twistor-string theory, this is the instanton moduli space. By developing the algebraic geometry of supermanifolds to include a treatment of superstacks we prove that such moduli problems, under suitable conditions, give rise to Deligne-Mumford superstacks (where all of these objects have natural definitions in terms of supergeometry). We make some observations about the properties of these moduli superstacks, as well as some remarks about their application in physics and their associated Gromov-Witten theory.

Moduli Problems in Abelian Categories and the Reconstruction Theorem

We give a moduli-theoretic proof of the classical theorem of Gabriel, stating that a scheme can be reconstructed from the abelian category of quasi-coherent sheaves over it. The methods employed are elementary and allow us to extend the theorem to (quasi-compact and separated) algebraic spaces. Using more advanced technology (and assuming flatness) we also give a proof of the folklore result that the group of autoequivalences of the category of quasi-coherent sheaves consists of automorphisms of the underlying space and twists by line bundles. We apply our strategy to prove analogous statements for categories of sheaves twisted by a Gm-gerbe. Our methods allow us to treat even gerbes not coming from a Brauer class. As a pleasant consequence, we deduce a Morita theory for sheaves of abelian categories.

Hilbert schemes as moduli of Higgs bundles and local systems

We construct five families of two-dimensional moduli spaces of parabolic Higgs bundles (respectively local systems) by taking the equivariant Hilbert scheme of a certain finite group acting on the cotangent bundle of an elliptic curve. We show that the Hilbert scheme of m points of these surfaces is again a moduli space of parabolic Higgs bundles (respectively local systems), confirming a conjecture of Boalch in these cases and extending a result of Gorsky--Nekrasov--Rubtsov. Using the McKay correspondence we establish the autoduality conjecture for the derived categories of the moduli spaces of Higgs bundles under consideration.
