Some Considerations concerning the Fluctuation of the Ratios of two Observables

We discuss several possible caveats which arise with the interpretation of measurements of fluctuations in heavy ion collisions. We especially focus on the ratios of particle yields, which has been advocated as a possible signature of a critical point in the QCD phase diagram. We conclude that current experimental observables are not well-defined and are without a proper quantitative meaning.

Statistical Fluctuations and Correlations in Hadronic Equilibrium Systems

This thesis is dedictaed to the study of fluctuation and correlation observables of hadronic equilibrium systems. The statistical hadronization model of high energy physics, in its ideal, i.e. non-interacting, gas approximation will be investigated in different ensemble formulations. The hypothesis of thermal and chemical equilibrium in high energy interaction will be tested against qualitative and quantitative predictions.

Multiplicity Fluctuations and Correlations in Limited Momentum Space Bins in Relativistic Gases

Multiplicity fluctuations and correlations are calculated within thermalized relativistic ideal quantum gases. These are shown to be sensitive to the choice of statistical ensemble as well as to the choice of acceptance window in momentum space. It is furthermore shown that global conservation laws introduce non-trivial correlations between disconnected regions in momentum space, even in the absence of any dynamics.

Multiplicity Fluctuations in Limited Segments of Momentum Space in Statistical Models

Multiplicity fluctuations in limited segments of momentum space are calculated for a classical pion gas within the statistical model. Results for the grand canonical, canonical, and micro-canonical ensemble are obtained, compared and discussed. We demonstrate that even in the large volume limit correlations between macroscopic subsystems due to energy and momentum conservation persist. Based on the micro-canonical formulation we make qualitative predictions for the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of multiplicity fluctuations. The resulting effects are of similar magnitude as the predicted enhancement due to a phase transition from a quark-gluon plasma to a hadron gas phase, or due to the critical point of strongly interacting matter, and qualitatively agree with recently published preliminary multiplicity fluctuation data of the NA49 SPS experiment.
