Action minimizing fronts in general FPU-type chains

We study atomic chains with nonlinear nearest neighbour interactions and prove the existence of fronts (heteroclinic travelling waves with constant asymptotic states). Generalizing recent results of Herrmann and Rademacher we allow for non-convex interaction potentials and find fronts with non-monotone profile. These fronts minimize an action integral and can only exists if the asymptotic states fulfil the macroscopic constraints and if the interaction potential satisfies a geometric graph condition. Finally, we illustrate our findings by numerical simulations.

Heteroclinic travelling waves in convex FPU-type chains

We consider infinite FPU-type atomic chains with general convex potentials and study the existence of monotone fronts that are heteroclinic travelling waves connecting constant asymptotic states. Iooss showed that small amplitude fronts bifurcate from convex-concave turning points of the force. In this paper we prove that fronts exist for any asymptotic states that satisfy certain constraints. For potentials whose derivative has exactly one turning point these constraints precisely mean that the front corresponds to an energy conserving supersonic shock of the `p-system', which is the naive hyperbolic continuum limit of the chain. The proof goes via minimizing an action functional for the deviation from this discontinuous shock profile. We also discuss qualitative properties and the numerical computation of fronts.

Periodic travelling waves in convex Klein-Gordon chains

We study Klein-Gordon chains with attractive nearest neighbour forces and convex on-site potential, and show that there exists a two-parameter family of periodic travelling waves (wave trains) with unimodal and even profile functions. Our existence proof is based on a saddle-point problem with constraints and exploits the invariance properties of an improvement operator. Finally, we discuss the numerical computation of wave trains.

Unimodal wave trains and solitons in convex FPU chains

We consider atomic chains with nearest neighbour interactions and study periodic and homoclinic travelling waves which are called wave trains and solitons, respectively. Our main result is a new existence proof which relies on the constrained maximisation of the potential energy and exploits the invariance properties of an improvement operator. The approach is restricted to convex interaction potentials but refines the standard results as it provides the existence of travelling waves with unimodal and even profile functions. Moreover, we discuss the numerical approximation and complete localization of wave trains, and show that wave trains converge to solitons when the periodicity length tends to infinity.

A Kinetic Model for Grain Growth

We provide a well-posedness analysis of a kinetic model for grain growth introduced by Fradkov which is based on the von Neumann-Mullins law. The model consists of an infinite number of transport equations with a tri-diagonal coupling modelling topological changes in the grain configuration. Self-consistency of this kinetic model is achieved by introducing a coupling weight which leads to a nonlinear and nonlocal system of equations. We prove existence of solutions by approximation with finite dimensional systems. Key ingredients in passing to the limit are suitable super-solutions, a bound from below on the total mass, and a tightness estimate which ensures that no mass is transported to infinity in finite time.

Self-similar solutions for the LSW model with encounters

The LSW model with encounters has been suggested by Lifshitz and Slyozov as a regularization of their classical mean-field model for domain coarsening to obtain universal self-similar long-time behavior. We rigorously establish that an exponentially decaying self-similar solution to this model exist, and show that this solutions is isolated in a certain function space. Our proof relies on setting up a suitable fixed-point problem in an appropriate function space and careful asymptotic estimates of the solution to a corresponding homogeneous problem.

Lagrangian and Hamiltonian two-scale reduction

Studying high-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with microstructure, it is an important and challenging problem to identify reduced macroscopic models that describe some effective dynamics on large spatial and temporal scales. This paper concerns the question how reasonable macroscopic Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structures can by derived from the microscopic system. In the first part we develop a general approach to this problem by considering non-canonical Hamiltonian structures on the tangent bundle. This approach can be applied to all Hamiltonian lattices (or Hamiltonian PDEs) and involves three building blocks: (i) the embedding of the microscopic system, (ii) an invertible two-scale transformation that encodes the underlying scaling of space and time, (iii) an elementary model reduction that is based on a Principle of Consistent Expansions. In the second part we exemplify the reduction approach and derive various reduced PDE models for the atomic chain. The reduced equations are either related to long wave-length motion or describe the macroscopic modulation of an oscillatory microstructure.

On a thermodynamically consistent modification of the Becker-Doering equations

Recently, Dreyer and Duderstadt have proposed a modification of the Becker--Doering cluster equations which now have a nonconvex Lyapunov function. We start with existence and uniqueness results for the modified equations. Next we derive an explicit criterion for the existence of equilibrium states and solve the minimization problem for the Lyapunov function. Finally, we discuss the long time behavior in the case that equilibrium solutions do exist.
