Are scales Fréchet?

We continue the study of Dow spaces of a $\mathfrak{b}$-scale, originally introduced by Alan Dow in "$π$-Weight and the Fréchet-Urysohn property" (Topology and its Applications, Vol. 174, pp. 56-61). We prove that it is consistent that all such spaces are Fréchet, but it is also consistent that none of them is. We use these spaces to exhibit (consistently) a $\triangle_{2}^{1}$ ideal that does not satisfy the Category Dichotomy. Finally, we prove that the Category Dichotomy holds for all co-analytic ideals.

Some combinatorial properties of semiselective ideals

We present several combinatorial properties of semiselective ideals on the set of natural numbers. The continuum hypothesis implies that the complement of every selective ideal contains a selective ultrafilter, however for semiselective ideals this is not the case. We prove that under certain hypothesis, for instance $V=L$, there are semiselective ideals whose complement does not contain a selective ultrafilter, and that it is also consistent that the complement of every semiselective ideal contains a selective ultrafilter; specifically, we show that if $V=L$ then there is a generic extension of $V$ where this occurs. We present other results concerning semiselective ideals, namely an alternative proof of Ellentuck's theorem for the local Ramsey property, and we prove some facts about the additivity of the ideal of local Ramsey null sets, and also about the generalized Suslin operation on the algebra of local Ramsey sets.

Complemented ideals of $\ell_\infty$

Answering questions raised in \cite{Leonetti, Uzcategui} we characterize ideals $\mathcal I\subseteq \mathcal P(ω)$ such that $c_{0,\mathcal I}$ is complemented in $\ell_\infty$ as exactly those ideals for which the space $K_{\mathcal I}= \mathsf{Stone}(\mathcal P(ω)/\mathcal I)$ is approximable, i.e., the unit ball of the space $M(K_{\mathcal I})$ of signed Radon measures on $K_\mathcal I$ is separable in the weak* topology.

Almost refinement, reaping, and ultrafilter numbers

We investigate the combinatorial structure of the set of maximal antichains in a Boolean algebra ordered by almost refinement. We also consider the reaping relation and its associated cardinal invariants, focusing in particular on reduced powers of Boolean algebras. As an application, we obtain that, on the one hand, the ultrafilter number of the Cohen algebra is greater than or equal to the cofinality of the meagre ideal and, on the other hand, a suitable parametrized diamond principle implies that the ultrafilter number of the Cohen algebra is equal to $\aleph_1$.

The Category Dichotomy for Ideals

We provide a counterexample to the Category Dichotomy in the framework of $\textsf{ZFC}$. That is, we prove the existence of an ideal on $ω$ that is not Katětov below $\mathsf{nwd}$ and does not have restrictions above $\mathcal{ED}$. We also prove that in the Laver model every tall $\mathsf{P}$-ideal is Katětov-Blass above $\mathcal{ED}_{\mathsf{fin}}$ and that it is consistent that every $\mathsf{Q}^{+}$ ideal is meager.

More Ramsey theory for highly connected monochromatic subgraphs

An infinite graph is said to be highly connected if the induced subgraph on the complement of any set of vertices of smaller size is connected. We continue the study of weaker versions of Ramsey Theorem on uncountable cardinals asserting that if we color edges of the complete graph we can find a large highly connected monochromatic subgraph. In particular, several questions of Bergfalk, Hrušák and Shelah are answered by showing that assuming the consistency of suitable large cardinals the following are relatively consistent with $\mathsf{ZFC}$: $κ\to_{hc} (κ)^2_ω$ for every regular cardinal $κ\geq \aleph_2$ and $\neg\mathsf{CH}+ \aleph_2 \to_{hc} (\aleph_1)^2_ω$. Building on a work of Lambie-Hanson, we also show that $\aleph_2 \to_{hc} [\aleph_2]^2_{ω,2}$ is consistent with $\neg\mathsf{CH}$. To prove these results, we use the existence of ideals with strong combinatorial properties after collapsing suitable large cardinals.

Almost disjoint families and the geometry of nonseparable spheres

We consider uncountable almost disjoint families of subsets of $\mathbb N$, the Johnson-Lindenstrauss Banach spaces $(\mathcal X_{\mathcal A}, \|\ \|_\infty)$ induced by them, and their natural equivalent renormings $(\mathcal X_{\mathcal A}, \|\ \|_{\infty, 2})$. We introduce a partial order $\mathbb P_{\mathcal A}$ and characterize some geometric properties of the spheres of $(\mathcal X_{\mathcal A}, \|\ \|_{\infty})$ and of $(\mathcal X_{\mathcal A}, \|\ \|_{\infty, 2})$ in terms of combinatorial properties of $\mathbb P_{\mathcal A}$. Exploiting the extreme behavior of some known and some new almost disjoint families among others we show the existence of Banach spaces where the unit spheres display surprising geometry: 1) There is a Banach space of density continuum whose unit sphere is the union of countably many sets of diameters strictly less than $1$. 2) It is consistent that for every $ρ>0$ there is a nonseparable Banach space, where for every $δ>0$ there is $\varepsilon>0$ such that every uncountable $(1-\varepsilon)$-separated set of elements of the unit sphere contains two elements distant by less than $1$ and two elements distant at least by $2-ρ-δ$. It should be noted that for every $\varepsilon>0$ every nonseparable Banach space has a plenty of uncountable $(1-\varepsilon)$-separated sets by the Riesz Lemma. We also obtain a consistent dichotomy for the spaces of the form $(\mathcal X_{\mathcal A}, \|\ \|_{\infty, 2})$: The Open Coloring Axiom implies that the unit sphere of every Banach space of the form $(\mathcal X_{\mathcal A}, \|\ \|_{\infty, 2})$ either is the union of countably many sets of diameter strictly less than $1$ or it contains an uncountable $(2-\varepsilon)$-separated set for every $\varepsilon>0$.

Combinatorial properties of MAD families

We study some strong combinatorial properties of $\textsf{MAD}$ families. An ideal $\mathcal{I}$ is Shelah-Steprāns if for every set $X\subseteq{\left[ ω\right]}^{<ω}$ there is an element of $\mathcal{I}$ that either intersects every set in $X$ or contains infinitely many members of it. We prove that a Borel ideal is Shelah-Steprāns if and only if it is Katětov above the ideal $\textsf{fin}\times\textsf{fin}$. We prove that Shelah-Steprāns $\textsf{MAD}$ families have strong indestructibility properties (in particular, they are both Cohen and random indestructible). We also consider some other strong combinatorial properties of $\textsf{MAD}$ families. Finally, it is proved that it is consistent to have $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal{M}) = {\aleph}_{1}$ and no Shelah-Steprāns families of size ${\aleph}_{1}$.

Invariant Ideal Axiom

We introduce and prove the consistency of a new set theoretic axiom we call the \emph{Invariant Ideal Axiom}. The axiom enables us to provide (consistently) a full topological classification of countable sequential groups, as well as fully characterize the behavior of their finite products. We also construct examples that demonstrate the optimality of the conditions in \IIA, and list a number of open questions.

Conjugacy classes of big mapping class groups

We describe the topological behavior of the conjugacy action of the mapping class group of an orientable infinite-type surface $Σ$ on itself. Our main results are: (1) All conjugacy classes of $MCG(Σ)$ are meager for every $Σ$, (2) $MCG(Σ)$ has a somewhere dense conjugacy class if and only if $Σ$ has at most two maximal ends and no non-displaceable finite-type subsurfaces, (3) $MCG(Σ)$ has a dense conjugacy class if and only if $Σ$ has a unique maximal end and no non-displaceable finite-type subsurfaces. Our techniques are based on model-theoretic methods developed by Kechris, Rosendal and Truss.

HL ideals and Sacks indestructible ultrafilters

We study ultrafilters on countable sets and reaping families which are indestructible by Sacks forcing. We deal with the combinatorial characterization of such families and we prove that every reaping family of size smaller than the continuum is Sacks indestructible. We prove that complements of many definable ideals are Sacks reaping indestructible, with one notable exception, the complement of the ideal $\mathcal Z$ of sets of asymptotic density zero. We investigate the existence of Sacks indestructible ultrafilters and prove that every Sacks indestructible ultrafilter is a $\mathcal Z$-ultrafilter.

Tukey order among $F_σ$ ideals

We investigate the Tukey order in the class of $F_σ$ ideals of subsets of $ω$. We show that no nontrivial $F_σ$ ideal is Tukey below a $G_δ$ ideal of compact sets. We introduce the notions of flat ideals and gradually flat ideals. We prove a dichotomy theorem for flat ideals isolating gradual flatness as the side of the dichotomy that is structurally good. We give diverse characterizations of gradual flatness among flat ideals using Tukey reductions and games. For example, we show that gradually flat ideals are precisely those flat ideals that are Tukey below the ideal of density zero sets.

Simutaneously vanishing higher derived limits without large cardinals

A question dating to Sibe Mardešić and Andrei Prasolov's 1988 work Strong homology is not additive, and motivating a considerable amount of set theoretic work in the ensuing years, is that of whether it is consistent with the ZFC axioms for the higher derived limits $\mathrm{lim}^n$ $(n>0)$ of a certain inverse system $\mathbf{A}$ indexed by ${^ω}ω$ to simultaneously vanish. An equivalent formulation of this question is that of whether it is consistent for all $n$-coherent families of functions indexed by ${^ω}ω$ to be trivial. In this paper, we prove that, in any forcing extension given by adjoining $\beth_ω$-many Cohen reals, $\mathrm{lim}^n \mathbf{A}$ vanishes for all $n > 0$. Our proof involves a detailed combinatorial analysis of the forcing extension and repeated applications of higher dimensional $Δ$-system lemmas. This work removes all large cardinal hypotheses from the main result of arXiv:1907.11744 and substantially reduces the least value of the continuum known to be compatible with the simultaneous vanishing of $\mathrm{lim}^n \mathbf{A}$ for all $n > 0$.

Countably compact groups without non-trivial convergent sequences

We construct, in $\mathsf{ZFC}$, a countably compact subgroup of $2^{\mathfrak{c}}$ without non-trivial convergent sequences, answering an old problem of van Douwen. As a consequence we also prove the existence of two countably compact groups $\mathbb{G}_{0}$ and $\mathbb{G}_{1}$ such that the product $\mathbb{G}_{0} \times \mathbb{G}_{1}$ is not countably compact, thus answering a classical problem of Comfort.

Maximal almost disjoint families and pseudocompactness of hyperspaces

We show that all maximal almost disjoint families have pseudocompact Vietoris hyperspace if and only if $\mathsf{MA}_\mathfrak c (\mathcal P(ω)/\mathrm{fin})$ holds. We further study the question whether there is a maximal almost disjoint family whose hyperspace is pseudocompact and prove that consistently such families do not exist \emph{genericaly}, by constructing a consistent example of a maximal almost disjoint family $\mathcal A$ of size less than $\mathfrak c$ whose hyperspace is not pseudocompact.

Strong measure zero in Polish groups

The notion of strong measure zero is studied in the context of Polish groups. In particular, the extent to which the theorem of Galvin, Mycielski and Solovay holds in the context of an arbitrary Polish group is studied. Hausdorff measure and dimension is used to characterize strong measure zero. The products of strong measure zero sets are examined. Sharp measure zero, a notion stronger that strong measure zero, is shown to be related to meageradditive sets in the Cantor set and Polish groups by a theorem very similar to the theorem of Galvin, Mycielski and Solovay.

On $\mathbb R$-embeddability of almost disjoint families and Akemann-Doner C*-algebras

An almost disjoint family $\mathcal A$ of subsets of $\mathbb N$ is said to be $\mathbb R$-embeddable if there is a function $f:\mathbb N\rightarrow \mathbb R$ such that the sets $f[A]$ are ranges of real sequences converging to distinct reals for distinct $A\in \mathcal A$. It is well known that almost disjoint families which have few separations, such as Luzin families, are not $\mathbb R$-embeddable. We study extraction principles related to $\mathbb R$-embeddability and separation properties of almost disjoint families of $\mathbb N$ as well as their limitations. An extraction principle whose consistency is our main result is: every almost disjoint family of size continuum contains an $\mathbb R$-embeddable subfamily of size continuum. It is true in the Sacks model. The Cohen model serves to show that the above principle does not follow from the fact that every almost disjoint family of size continuum has two separated subfamilies of size continuum. We also construct in ZFC an almost disjoint family, where no two uncountable subfamilies can be separated but always a countable subfamily can be separated from any disjoint subfamily. Using a refinement of the $\mathbb R$-embeddability property called a controlled $\mathbb R$-embedding property we obtain the following results concerning Akemann-Doner C*-algebras which are induced by uncountable almost disjoint families: a) In ZFC there are Akemann-Doner C*-algebras of density $\mathfrak c$ with no commutative subalgebras of density $\mathfrak c$, b) It is independent from ZFC whether there is an Akemann-Doner algebra of density $\mathfrak c$ with no nonseparable commutative subalgebra. This completes an earlier result that there is in ZFC an Akemann-Doner algebra of density $ω_1$ with no nonseparable commutative subalgebra.

Ramsey theory for highly connected monochromatic subgraphs

An infinite graph is highly connected if the complement of any subgraph of smaller size is connected. We consider weaker versions of Ramsey's Theorem asserting that in any coloring of the edges of a complete graph there exist large highly connected subgraphs all of whose edges are colored by the same color.
