Algebraic vs. analytic: a survey

Given a pair of complex algebraic varieties, we can ask: does every analytic map admit an algebraic representative? Such questions are most interesting when the source and target are non-compact varieties, in which case the problems are closely linked with Hodge-type conjectures. Concrete avatars of this kind of problem, which we discuss from several points of view, include: which holomorphic vector bundles on an affine variety admit an algebraic structure, and which homotopy classes of maps admit algebraic representatives?

On the hyperreal dual Steenrod algebra

We compute the dual Steenrod algebra for Bredon homology with constant coefficients $\underline{\mathbb Z}$ and $\underline{\mathbb Z}/2$ in the category of modules over $MU^{((G))}$, the norm to $G=C_{2^n}$ of $MU_{\mathbb R}$. Using this and an equivariant version of the Greenlees--Serre spectral sequence, we give a spectral sequence computing the $RO$-graded homotopy of the Eilenberg--Mac Lane spectrum $H\underline{\mathbb F}_2\otimes H\underline{\mathbb Z}$.

On P^1-stabilization in unstable motivic homotopy theory

We analyze stabilization with respect to ${\mathbb P}^1$ in the Morel--Voevodsky unstable motivic homotopy theory. We introduce a refined notion of cellularity (a.k.a., biconnectivity) in various motivic homotopy categories taking into account both the simplicial and Tate circles. Under suitable cellularity hypotheses, we refine the Whitehead theorem by showing that a map of nilpotent motivic spaces can be seen to be an equivalence if it so after taking (Voevodsky) motives. We then establish a version of the Freudenthal suspension theorem for ${\mathbb P}^1$-suspension, again under suitable cellularity hypotheses. As applications, we resolve Murthy's conjecture on splitting of corank $1$ vector bundles on smooth affine algebras over algebraically closed fields having characteristic $0$ and compute new unstable motivic homotopy of motivic spheres.

Discrete quantum systems from topological field theory

We introduce a technique to construct gapped lattice models using defects in topological field theory. We illustrate with 2+1 dimensional models, for example Chern-Simons theories. These models are local, though the state space is not necessarily a tensor product of vector spaces over the complex numbers. The Hamiltonian is a sum of commuting projections. We also give a topological field theory construction of Levin-Wen models.

Algebraic vector bundles and $p$-local A^1-homotopy theory

Using techniques of A^1-homotopy theory, we produce motivic lifts of elements in classical homotopy groups of spheres; these lifts provide polynomial maps of spheres and allow us to construct ``low rank'' algebraic vector bundles on ``simple'' smooth affine varieties of high dimension.

Unstable motivic and real-étale homotopy theory

We prove that for any base scheme $S$, real étale motivic (unstable) homotopy theory over $S$ coincides with unstable semialgebraic topology over $S$ (that is, sheaves of spaces on the real spectrum of $S$). Moreover we show that for pointed connected motivic spaces over $S$, the real étale motivic localization is given by smashing with the telescope of the map $ρ: S^0 \to {\mathbb G}_m$.

On the Whitehead theorem for nilpotent motivic spaces

We improve some foundational connectivity results and the relative Hurewicz theorem in motivic homotopy theory, study functorial central series in motivic local group theory, establish the existence of functorial Moore--Postnikov factorizations for nilpotent morphisms of motivic spaces under a mild technical hypothesis and establish an analog of the Whitehead theorem for nilpotent motivic spaces. As an application, we deduce a surprising unstable motivic periodicity result.

The Odd Fermion

In this short note we use the geometric approach to (topological) field theory to address the question: Does an odd number of quantum mechanical fermions make sense?

Reflection positivity and invertible topological phases

We implement an extended version of reflection positivity (Wick-rotated unitarity) for invertible topological quantum field theories and compute the abelian group of deformation classes using stable homotopy theory. We apply these field theory considerations to lattice systems, assuming the existence and validity of low energy effective field theory approximations, and thereby produce a general formula for the group of Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phases in terms of Thom's bordism spectra; the only input is the dimension and symmetry group. We provide computations for fermionic systems in physically relevant dimensions. Other topics include symmetry in quantum field theories, a relativistic 10-fold way, the homotopy theory of relativistic free fermions, and a topological spin-statistics theorem.

Dualizing spheres for compact $p$-adic analytic groups and duality in chromatic homotopy

The primary goal of this paper is to study Spanier-Whitehead duality in the $K(n)$-local category. One of the key players in the $K(n)$-local category is the Lubin-Tate spectrum $E_n$, whose homotopy groups classify deformations of a formal group law of height $n$, in the implicit characteristic $p$. It is known that $E_n$ is self-dual up to a shift; however, that does not fully take into account the action of the Morava stabilizer group $\mathbb{G}_n$, or even its subgroup of automorphisms of the formal group in question. In this paper we find that the $\mathbb{G}_n$-equivariant dual of $E_n$ is in fact $E_n$ twisted by a sphere with a non-trivial (when $n>1$) action by $\mathbb{G}_n$. This sphere is a dualizing module for the group $\mathbb{G}_n$, and we construct and study such an object $I_{\mathcal{G}}$ for any compact $p$-adic analytic group $\mathcal{G}$. If we restrict the action of $\mathcal{G}$ on $I_{\mathcal{G}}$ to certain type of small subgroups, we identify $I_{\mathcal{G}}$ with a specific representation sphere coming from the Lie algebra of $\mathcal{G}$. This is done by a classification of $p$-complete sphere spectra with an action by an elementary abelian $p$-group in terms of characteristic classes, and then a specific comparison of the characteristic classes in question. The setup makes the theory quite accessible for computations, as we demonstrate in the later sections of this paper, determining the $K(n)$-local Spanier-Whitehead duals of $E_n^{hH}$ for select choices of $p$ and $n$ and finite subgroups $H$ of $\mathbb{G}_n$.

Localization and nilpotent spaces in A^1-homotopy theory

For a subring $R$ of the rational numbers, we study $R$-localization functors in the local homotopy theory of simplicial presheaves on a small site and then in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory. To this end, we introduce and analyze two notions of nilpotence for spaces in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory paying attention to future applications for vector bundles. We show that $R$-localization behaves in a controlled fashion for the nilpotent spaces we consider. We show that the classifying space $BGL_n$ is ${\mathbb A}^1$-nilpotent when $n$ is odd, and analyze the (more complicated) situation where $n$ is even as well. We establish analogs of various classical results about rationalization in the context of ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory: if $-1$ is a sum of squares in the base field, ${\mathbb A}^n \setminus 0$ is rationally equivalent to a suitable motivic Eilenberg--Mac Lane space, and the special linear group decomposes as a product of motivic spheres.

$η$-periodic motivic stable homotopy theory over fields

Over any field of characteristic not 2, we establish a 2-term resolution of the $η$-periodic, 2-local motivic sphere spectrum by shifts of the connective 2-local Witt K-theory spectrum. This is curiously similar to the resolution of the K(1)-local sphere in classical stable homotopy theory. As applications we determine the $η$-periodized motivic stable stems and the $η$-periodized algebraic symplectic and SL-cobordism groups. Along the way we construct Adams operations on the motivic spectrum representing Hermitian K-theory and establish new completeness results for certain motivic spectra over fields of finite virtual 2-cohomological dimension. In an appendix, we supply a new proof of the homotopy fixed point theorem for the Hermitian K-theory of fields.

Consistency of M-Theory on nonorientable manifolds

We prove that there is no parity anomaly in M-theory in the low-energy field theory approximation. Our approach is computational. We determine generators for the 12-dimensional bordism group of pin manifolds with a w_1-twisted integer lift of w_4; these are the manifolds on which Wick-rotated M-theory exists. The anomaly cancellation comes down to computing a specific eta-invariant and cubic form on these manifolds. Of interest beyond this specific problem are our expositions of: computational techniques for eta-invariants, the algebraic theory of cubic forms, Adams spectral sequence techniques, and anomalies for spinor fields and Rarita-Schwinger fields.

Comparing Dualities in the $K(n)$-local Category

In their work on the period map and the dualizing sheaf for Lubin-Tate space, Gross and the second author wrote down an equivalence between the Spanier-Whitehead and Brown-Comenetz duals of certain type $n$-complexes in the $K(n)$-local category at large primes. In the culture of the time, these results were accessible to educated readers, but this seems no longer to be the case; therefore, in this note we give the details. Because we are at large primes, the key result is algebraic: in the Picard group of Lubin-Tate space, two important invertible sheaves become isomorphic modulo $p$.

Detecting exotic spheres in low dimensions using coker J

Building off of the work of Kervaire and Milnor, and Hill, Hopkins, and Ravenel, Xu and Wang showed that the only odd dimensions n for which S^n has a unique differentiable structure are 1, 3, 5, and 61. We show that the only even dimensions below 140 for which S^n has a unique differentiable structure are 2, 6, 12, 56, and perhaps 4.

Intersection Forms of Spin 4-Manifolds and the Pin(2)-Equivariant Mahowald Invariant

In studying the "11/8-Conjecture" on the Geography Problem in 4-dimensional topology, Furuta proposed a question on the existence of Pin(2)-equivariant stable maps between certain representation spheres. In this paper, we present a complete solution to this problem by analyzing the Pin(2)-equivariant Mahowald invariants. As a geometric application of our result, we prove a "10/8+4"-Theorem. We prove our theorem by analyzing maps between certain finite spectra arising from BPin(2) and various Thom spectra associated with it. To analyze these maps, we use the technique of cell diagrams, known results on the stable homotopy groups of spheres, and the $j$-based Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence.

Invertible phases of matter with spatial symmetry

We propose a general formula for the group of invertible topological phases on a space $Y$, possibly equipped with the action of a group $G$. Our formula applies to arbitrary symmetry types. When $Y$ is Euclidean space and $G$ a crystallographic group, the term `topological crystalline phases' is sometimes used for these phases of matter.

Obstructions to algebraizing topological vector bundles

Suppose $X$ is a smooth complex algebraic variety. A necessary condition for a complex topological vector bundle on $X$ (viewed as a complex manifold) to be algebraic is that all Chern classes must be algebraic cohomology classes, i.e., lie in the image of the cycle class map. We analyze the question of whether algebraicity of Chern classes is sufficient to guarantee algebraizability of complex topological vector bundles. For affine varieties of dimension $\leq 3$, it is known that algebraicity of Chern classes of a vector bundle guarantees algebraizability of the vector bundle. In contrast, we show in dimension $\geq 4$ that algebraicity of Chern classes is insufficient to guarantee algebraizability of vector bundles. To do this, we construct a new obstruction to algebraizability using Steenrod operations on Chow groups. By means of an explicit example, we observe that our obstruction is non-trivial in general.
