Hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series and integrals associated with root systems

We give an overview of some of the main results from the theories of hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series and integrals associated with root systems. In particular, we list a number of summations, transformations and explicit evaluations for such multiple series and integrals. We concentrate on such results which do not directly extend to the elliptic level. This text is a provisional version of a chapter on hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series and integrals associated with root systems for volume 2 of the new Askey--Bateman project which deals with "Multivariable special functions".

$q$-Analogues of two product formulas of hypergeometric functions by Bailey

We use Andrews' $q$-analogues of Watson's and Whipple's $_3F_2$ summation theorems to deduce two formulas for products of specific basic hypergeometric functions. These constitute $q$-analogues of corresponding product formulas for ordinary hypergeometric functions given by Bailey. The first formula was obtained earlier by Jain and Srivastava by a different method.

Combinatorial interpretations of Ramanujan's tau function

We use a q-series identity by Ramanujan to give a combinatorial interpretation of Ramanujan's tau function which involves t-cores and a new class of partitions which we call (m,k)-capsids. The same method can be applied in conjunction with other related identities yielding alternative combinatorial interpretations of the tau function.

Basic hypergeometric summations from rook theory

We employ a one-variable extension of q-rook theory to give combinatorial proofs of some basic hypergeometric summations, including the q-Pfaff-Saalschütz summation and a 4phi3 summation by Jain.

Elliptic rook and file numbers

Utilizing elliptic weights, we construct an elliptic analogue of rook numbers for Ferrers boards. Our elliptic rook numbers generalize Garsia and Remmel's q-rook numbers by two additional independent parameters a and b, and a nome p. These are shown to satisfy an elliptic extension of a factorization theorem which in the classical case was established by Goldman, Joichi and White and later was extended to the q-case by Garsia and Remmel. We obtain similar results for our elliptic analogues of Garsia and Remmel's q-file numbers for skyline boards. We also provide an elliptic extension of the j-attacking model introduced by Remmel and Wachs. Various applications of our results include elliptic analogues of (generalized) Stirling numbers of the first and second kind, Lah numbers, Abel numbers, and r-restricted versions thereof.

Elliptic extensions of the alpha-parameter model and the rook model for matchings

We construct elliptic extensions of the alpha-parameter rook model introduced by Goldman and Haglund and of the rook model for matchings of Haglund and Remmel. In particular, we extend the product formulas of these models to the elliptic setting. By specializing the parameter alpha in our elliptic extension of the alpha-parameter model and the shape of the Ferrers board in different ways, we obtain elliptic analogues of the Stirling numbers of the first kind and of the Abel polynomials, and obtain an a,q-analogue of the matching numbers. We further generalize the rook theory model for matchings by introducing l-lazy graphs which correspond to l-shifted boards, where l is a finite vector of positive integers. The corresponding elliptic product formula generalizes Haglund and Remmel's product formula for matchings already in the non-elliptic basic case.

Elliptic Hypergeometric Summations by Taylor Series Expansion and Interpolation

We use elliptic Taylor series expansions and interpolation to deduce a number of summations for elliptic hypergeometric series. We extend to the well-poised elliptic case results that in the $q$-case have previously been obtained by Cooper and by Ismail and Stanton. We also provide identities involving S. Bhargava's cubic theta functions.

An elliptic extension of the general product formula for augmented rook boards

Rook theory has been investigated by many people since its introduction by Kaplansky and Riordan in 1946. Goldman, Joichi and White in 1975 showed that the sum over $k$ of the product of the $(n-k)$-th rook numbers multiplied by the $k$-th falling factorial polynomials factorize into a product. In the sequel, different types of generalizations and analogues of this product formula have been derived by various authors. In 2008, Miceli and Remmel constructed a rook theory model involving augmented rook boards in which they showed the validity of a general product formula which can be specialized to all other product formulas that so far have appeared in the literature on rook theory. In this work, we construct an elliptic extension of the $q$-analogue of Miceli and Remmel's result. Special cases yield elliptic extensions of various known rook theory models.

Multiple hypergeometric series -- Appell series and beyond

This survey article (which will appear as a chapter in the book ``Computer Algebra in Quantum Field Theory: Integration, Summation and Special Functions'', Springer-Verlag) provides a small collection of basic material on multiple hypergeometric series of Appell-type and of more general series of related type.

On an identity by Chaundy and Bullard. II. More history

An identity by Chaundy and Bullard writes 1/(1-x)^n (n=1,2,...) as a sum of two truncated binomial series. In a paper which appeared in 2008 in Indag. Math. the authors surveyed many aspects of this identity. In the present paper we discuss much earlier occurrences of this identity in works by Hering (1868), de Moivre (1738) and de Montmort (1713). A relationship with Krawtchouk polynomials in work by Greville (1966) is also discussed.

A noncommutative weight-dependent generalization of the binomial theorem

A weight-dependent generalization of the binomial theorem for noncommuting variables is presented. This result extends the well-known binomial theorem for q-commuting variables by a generic weight function depending on two integers. For a special case of the weight function, restricting it to depend on only a single integer, the noncommutative binomial theorem involves an expansion of complete symmetric functions. Another special case concerns the weight function to be a suitably chosen elliptic (i.e., doubly-periodic meromorphic) function, in which case an elliptic generalization of the binomial theorem is obtained. The latter is utilized to quickly recover Frenkel and Turaev's elliptic hypergeometric 10V9 summation formula, an identity fundamental to the theory of elliptic hypergeometric series.

Recurrence formulas for Macdonald polynomials of type A

We consider products of two Macdonald polynomials of type A, indexed by dominant weights which are respectively a multiple of the first fundamental weight and a weight having zero component on the k-th fundamental weight. We give the explicit decomposition of any Macdonald polynomial of type A in terms of this basis.

On an identity by Chaundy and Bullard. I

An identity by Chaundy and Bullard writes 1/(1-x)^n (n=1,2,...) as a sum of two truncated binomial series. This identity was rediscovered many times. Notably, a special case was rediscovered by I. Daubechies, while she was setting up the theory of wavelets of compact support. We discuss or survey many different proofs of the identity, and also its relationship with Gauss hypergeometric series. We also consider the extension to complex values of the two parameters which occur as summation bounds. The paper concludes with a discussion of a multivariable analogue of the identity, which was first given by Damjanovic, Klamkin and Ruehr. We give the relationship with Lauricella hypergeometric functions and corresponding PDE's. The paper ends with a new proof of the multivariable case by splitting up Dirichlet's multivariable beta integral.

A Taylor expansion theorem for an elliptic extension of the Askey-Wilson operator

We establish Taylor series expansions in rational (and elliptic) function bases using E. Rains' elliptic extension of the Askey-Wilson divided difference operator. The expansion theorem we consider extends M.E.H. Ismail's expansion for the Askey-Wilson monomial basis. Three immediate applications (essentially already due to Rains) include simple proofs of Frenkel and Turaev's elliptic extensions of Jackson's 8-phi-7 summation and of Bailey's 10-phi-9 transformation, and the computation of the connection coefficients of Spiridonov's elliptic extension of Rahman's biorthogonal rational functions. We adumbrate other examples including the nonterminating extension of Jackson's 8-phi-7 summation and a quadratic expansion.

Macdonald Polynomials and Multivariable Basic Hypergeometric Series

We study Macdonald polynomials from a basic hypergeometric series point of view. In particular, we show that the Pieri formula for Macdonald polynomials and its recently discovered inverse, a recursion formula for Macdonald polynomials, both represent multivariable extensions of the terminating very-well-poised 6-phi-5 summation formula. We derive several new related identities including multivariate extensions of Jackson's very-well-poised 8-phi-7 summation. Motivated by our basic hypergeometric analysis, we propose an extension of Macdonald polynomials to Macdonald symmetric functions indexed by partitions with complex parts. These appear to possess nice properties.

Multilateral inversion of A_r, C_r and D_r basic hypergeometric series

In [Electron. J. Combin. 10 (2003), #R10], the author presented a new basic hypergeometric matrix inverse with applications to bilateral basic hypergeometric series. This matrix inversion result was directly extracted from an instance of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation theorem, and involves two infinite matrices which are not lower-triangular. The present paper features three different multivariable generalizations of the above result. These are extracted from Gustafson's A_r and C_r extensions and of the author's recent A_r extension of Bailey's 6-psi-6 summation formula. By combining these new multidimensional matrix inverses with A_r and D_r extensions of Jackson's 8-phi-7 summation theorem three balanced very-well-poised 8-psi-8 summation theorems associated with the root systems A_r and C_r are derived.
