The dynamics of localized spot patterns for reaction-diffusion systems on the sphere

In the singularly perturbed limit corresponding to a large diffusivity ratio between two components in a reaction-diffusion (RD) system, quasi-equilibrium spot patterns are often admitted, producing a solution that concentrates at a discrete set of points in the domain. In this paper, we derive and study the differential algebraic equation (DAE) that characterizes the slow dynamics for such spot patterns for the Brusselator RD model on the surface of a sphere. Asymptotic and numerical solutions are presented for the system governing the spot strengths, and we describe the complex bifurcation structure and demonstrate the occurrence of imperfection sensitivity due to higher order effects. Localized spot patterns can undergo a fast time instability and we derive the conditions for this phenomena, which depend on the spatial configuration of the spots and the parameters in the system. In the absence of these instabilities, our numerical solutions of the DAE system for $N = 2$ to $N = 8$ spots suggest a large basin of attraction to a small set of possible steady-state configurations. We discuss the connections between our results and the study of point vortices on the sphere, as well as the problem of determining a set of elliptic Fekete points, which correspond to globally minimizing the discrete logarithmic energy for $N$ points on the sphere.

Slowly varying control parameters, delayed bifurcations and the stability of spikes in reaction-diffusion systems

We present three examples of delayed bifurcations for spike solutions of reaction-diffusion systems. The delay effect results as the system passes slowly from a stable to an unstable regime, and was previously analysed in the context of ODE's in [P.Mandel, T.Erneux, J.Stat.Phys, 1987]. It was found that the instability would not be fully realized until the system had entered well into the unstable regime. The bifurcation is said to have been "delayed" relative to the threshold value computed directly from a linear stability analysis. In contrast, we analyze the delay effect in systems of PDE's. In particular, for spike solutions of singularly perturbed generalized Gierer-Meinhardt (GM) and Gray-Scott (GS) models, we analyze three examples of delay resulting from slow passage into regimes of oscillatory and competition instability. In the first example, for the GM model on the infinite real line, we analyze the delay resulting from slowly tuning a control parameter through a Hopf bifurcation. In the second example, we consider a Hopf bifurcation on a finite one-dimensional domain. In this scenario, as opposed to the extrinsic tuning of a system parameter through a bifurcation value, we analyze the delay of a bifurcation triggered by slow intrinsic dynamics of the PDE system. In the third example, we consider competition instabilities of the GS model triggered by the extrinsic tuning of a feed rate parameter. In all cases, we find that the system must pass well into the unstable regime before the onset of instability is fully observed, indicating delay. We also find that delay has an important effect on the eventual dynamics of the system in the unstable regime. We give analytic predictions for the magnitude of the delays as obtained through analysis of certain explicitly solvable nonlocal eigenvalue problems. The theory is confirmed by numerical solutions of the full PDE systems.

Logarithmic Expansions and the Stability of Periodic Patterns of Localized Spots for Reaction-Diffusion Systems in $\R^2

The linear stability of steady-state periodic patterns of localized spots in $\R^2$ for the two-component Gierer-Meinhardt (GM) and Schnakenburg reaction-diffusion models is analyzed in the semi-strong interaction limit corresponding to an asymptotically small diffusion coefficient $\eps^2$ of the activator concentration. In the limit $\eps\to 0$, localized spots in the activator are centered at the lattice points of a Bravais lattice with constant area $|Ω|$. To leading order in $ν={-1/\log\eps}$, the linearization of the steady-state periodic spot pattern has a zero eigenvalue when the inhibitor diffusivity satisfies $D={D_0/ν}$, for some $D_0$ independent of the lattice and the Bloch wavevector $\kb$. From a combination of the method of matched asymptotic expansions, Floquet-Bloch theory, and the rigorous study of certain nonlocal eigenvalue problems, an explicit analytical formula for the continuous band of spectrum that lies within an ${\mathcal O}(ν)$ neighborhood of the origin in the spectral plane is derived when $D={D_0/ν} + D_1$, where $D_1={\mathcal O}(1)$ is a de-tuning parameter. The periodic pattern is linearly stable when $D_1$ is chosen small enough so that this continuous band is in the stable left-half plane $\mbox{Re}(λ)<0$ for all $\kb$. Moreover, for both the Schnakenburg and GM models, our analysis identifies a model-dependent objective function, involving the regular part of the Bloch Green's function, that must be maximized in order to determine the specific periodic arrangement of localized spots that constitutes a linearly stable steady-state pattern for the largest value of $D$. From a numerical computation, it is shown within the class of oblique Bravais lattices that a regular hexagonal lattice arrangement of spots is optimal for maximizing the stability threshold in $D$.

The Stability and Dynamics of Localized Spot Patterns in the Two-Dimensional Gray-Scott Model

The dynamics and stability of multi-spot patterns to the Gray-Scott (GS) reaction-diffusion model in a two-dimensional domain is studied in the singularly perturbed limit of small diffusivity $ε$ of one of the two solution components. A hybrid asymptotic-numerical approach based on combining the method of matched asymptotic expansions with the detailed numerical study of certain eigenvalue problems is used to predict the dynamical behavior and instability mechanisms of multi-spot quasi-equilibrium patterns for the GS model in the limit $ε\to 0$. A differential algebraic ODE system for the collective coordinates $S_j$ and ${\mathbf x}_j$ for $j=1,...,k$ is derived, which characterizes the slow dynamics of a spot pattern. Instabilities of the multi-spot pattern due to the three distinct mechanisms of spot self-replication, spot oscillation, and spot annihilation, are studied by first deriving certain associated eigenvalue problems by using singular perturbation techniques. From a numerical computation of the spectrum of these eigenvalue problems, phase diagrams representing in the GS parameter space corresponding to the onset of spot instabilities are obtained for various simple spatial configurations of multi-spot patterns. In addition, it is shown that there is a wide parameter range where a spot instability can be triggered only as a result of the intrinsic slow motion of the collection of spots. The hybrid asymptotic-numerical results for spot dynamics and spot instabilities are validated from full numerical results computed from the GS model for various spatial configurations of spots.
