Intrinsic mixed finite element methods for linear Cosserat elasticity

We propose two parameter-robust mixed finite element methods for linear Cosserat elasticity. The Cosserat coupling constant $\mu_c$, connecting the displacement $u$ and rotation vector $\omega$, leads to possible locking phenomena in finite element methods. The formal limit of $\mu_c\to\infty$ enforces the constraint $\frac{1}{2}\operatorname{curl} u = \omega$ and leads to the fourth-order couple stress problem. Viewing the linear Cosserat model as the Hodge-Laplacian problem of a twisted de~Rham complex, we derive structure-preserving distributional finite element spaces, where the limit constraint is fulfilled in the discrete setting. Applying the mass conserving mixed stress (MCS) method for the rotations, the resulting scheme is robust in $\mu_c$. Combining it with the tangential-displacement normal-normal-stress (TDNNS) method for the displacement part, we obtain additional robustness in the nearly incompressible regime and for anisotropic structures. Using a post-processing scheme for the rotations, we prove optimal convergence rates independent of the Cosserat coupling constant $\mu_c$. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed methods in several numerical benchmark examples.

Updating structured matrix pencils with no spillover effect on unmeasured spectral data and deflating pair

This paper is devoted to the study of perturbations of a matrix pencil, structured or unstructured, such that a perturbed pencil will reproduce a given deflating pair while maintaining the invariance of the complementary deflating pair. If the latter is unknown, it is referred to as no spillover updating. The specific structures considered in this paper include symmetric, Hermitian, $\star$-even, $\star$-odd and $\star$-skew-Hamiltonian/Hamiltonian pencils. This study is motivated by the well-known Finite Element Model Updating Problem in structural dynamics, where the given deflating pair represents a set of given eigenpairs and the complementary deflating pair represents the remaining larger set of eigenpairs. Analytical expressions of structure preserving no spillover updating are determined for deflating pairs of structured matrix pencils. Besides, parametric representations of all possible unstructured perturbations are obtained when the complementary deflating pair of a given unstructured pencil is known. In addition, parametric expressions are obtained for structured updating with certain desirable structures which relate to existing results on structure preservation of a symmetric positive definite or semi definite matrix pencil.

A note on approximating the nearest stable discrete-time descriptor system with fixed rank

Consider a discrete-time linear time-invariant descriptor system $Ex(k+1)=Ax(k)$ for $k \in \mathbb Z_{+}$. In this paper, we tackle for the first time the problem of stabilizing such systems by computing a nearby regular index one stable system $\hat E x(k+1)= \hat A x(k)$ with $\text{rank}(\hat E)=r$. We reformulate this highly nonconvex problem into an equivalent optimization problem with a relatively simple feasible set onto which it is easy to project. This allows us to employ a block coordinate descent method to obtain a nearby regular index one stable system. We illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm on several examples.

Approximating the nearest stable discrete-time system

In this paper, we consider the problem of stabilizing discrete-time linear systems by computing a nearby stable matrix to an unstable one. To do so, we provide a new characterization for the set of stable matrices. We show that a matrix $A$ is stable if and only if it can be written as $A=S^{-1}UBS$, where $S$ is positive definite, $U$ is orthogonal, and $B$ is a positive semidefinite contraction (that is, the singular values of $B$ are less or equal to 1). This characterization results in an equivalent non-convex optimization problem with a feasible set on which it is easy to project. We propose a very efficient fast projected gradient method to tackle the problem in variables $(S,U,B)$ and generate locally optimal solutions. We show the effectiveness of the proposed method compared to other approaches.

Matrix Polynomials with Specified Eigenvalues

This work concerns the distance in 2-norm from a matrix polynomial to a nearest polynomial with a specified number of its eigenvalues at specified locations in the complex plane. Perturbations are allowed only on the constant coefficient matrix. Singular value optimization formulas are derived for these distances facilitating their computation. The singular value optimization problems, when the number of specified eigenvalues is small, can be solved numerically by exploiting the Lipschitzness and piece-wise analyticity of the singular values with respect to the parameters.

Real and complex operator norms

Real and complex norms of a linear operator acting on a normed complexified space are considered. Bounds on the ratio of these norms are given. The real and complex norms are shown to coincide for four classes of operators: 1) real linear operators from $L_p(μ_1)$ to $L_q(μ_2)$, $1\leq p\leq q\leq \infty$; 2) real linear operators between inner product spaces; 3) nonnegative linear operators acting between complexified function spaces with absolute and monotonic norms; 4) real linear operators from a complexified function space with a norm satisfying $\|\Re x \|\leq \|x\|$ to $L_\infty(μ)$. The inequality $p\leq q$ in Case 1 is shown to be sharp. A class of norm extensions from a real vector space to its complexification is constructed that preserve operator norms.
