Solution to the Ward Identities for Superamplitudes

Supersymmetry and R-symmetry Ward identities relate on-shell amplitudes in a supersymmetric field theory. We solve these Ward identities for (Next-to)^K MHV amplitudes of the maximally supersymmetric N=4 and N=8 theories. The resulting superamplitude is written in a new, manifestly supersymmetric and R-invariant form: it is expressed as a sum of very simple SUSY and SU(N)_R-invariant Grassmann polynomials, each multiplied by a "basis amplitude". For (Next-to)^K MHV n-point superamplitudes the number of basis amplitudes is equal to the dimension of the irreducible representation of SU(n-4) corresponding to the rectangular Young diagram with N columns and K rows. The linearly independent amplitudes in this algebraic basis may still be functionally related by permutation of momenta. We show how cyclic and reflection symmetries can be used to obtain a smaller functional basis of color-ordered single-trace amplitudes in N=4 gauge theory. We also analyze the more significant reduction that occurs in N=8 supergravity because gravity amplitudes are not ordered. All results are valid at both tree and loop level.

On-shell constructibility of tree amplitudes in general field theories

We study "on-shell constructibility" of tree amplitudes from recursion relations in general 4-dimensional local field theories with any type of particles, both massless and massive. Our analysis applies to renormalizable as well as non-renormalizable interactions, with or without supersymmetry. We focus on recursion relations that arise from complex deformations of all external momenta. Under certain conditions, these "all-line shift recursion relations" imply the MHV vertex expansion. We derive a simple sufficient criterion for the validity of the all-line shift recursion relations. It depends only on the mass dimensions of the coupling constants and on the sum of helicities of the external particles. Our proof is strikingly simple since it just relies on dimensional analysis and little-group transformation properties. In particular, the results demonstrate that all tree amplitudes with n>4 external states are constructible in any power-counting renormalizable theory. Aspects of all-line shift constructibility are illustrated in numerous examples, ranging from pure scalar theory and the massless Wess-Zumino model to theories with higher-derivative interactions, gluon-Higgs fusion, and Z-boson scattering. We propose a sharp physical interpretation of our constructibility criterion: the all-line shift fails precisely for those classes of n-point amplitudes that can receive local contributions from independent gauge-invariant n-field operators.

E7(7) constraints on counterterms in N=8 supergravity

We prove by explicit computation that 6-point matrix elements of D^4R^4 and D^6R^4 in N=8 supergravity have non-vanishing single-soft scalar limits, and therefore these operators violate the continuous E7(7) symmetry. The soft limits precisely match automorphism constraints. Together with previous results for R^4, this provides a direct proof that no E7(7)-invariant candidate counterterm exists below 7-loop order. At 7-loops, we characterize the infinite tower of independent supersymmetric operators D^4R^6, R^8, phi^2 R^8,... with n>4 fields and prove that they all violate E7(7) symmetry. This means that the 4-graviton amplitude determines whether or not the theory is finite at 7-loop order. We show that the corresponding candidate counterterm D^8R^4 has a non-linear supersymmetrization such that its single- and double-soft scalar limits are compatible with E7(7) up to and including 6-points. At loop orders 7, 8, 9 we provide an exhaustive account of all independent candidate counterterms with up to 16, 14, 12 fields, respectively, together with their potential single-soft scalar limits.

Gravity as the Square of Gauge Theory

We explore consequences of the recently discovered duality between color and kinematics, which states that kinematic numerators in a diagrammatic expansion of gauge-theory amplitudes can be arranged to satisfy Jacobi-like identities in one-to-one correspondence to the associated color factors. Using on-shell recursion relations, we give a field-theory proof showing that the duality implies that diagrammatic numerators in gravity are just the product of two corresponding gauge-theory numerators, as previously conjectured. These squaring relations express gravity amplitudes in terms of gauge-theory ingredients, and are a recasting of the Kawai, Lewellen and Tye relations. Assuming that numerators of loop amplitudes can be arranged to satisfy the duality, our tree-level proof immediately carries over to loop level via the unitarity method. We then present a Yang-Mills Lagrangian whose diagrams through five points manifestly satisfy the duality between color and kinematics. The existence of such Lagrangians suggests that the duality also extends to loop amplitudes, as confirmed at two and three loops in a concurrent paper. By "squaring" the novel Yang-Mills Lagrangian we immediately obtain its gravity counterpart. We outline the general structure of these Lagrangians for higher points. We also write down various new representations of gauge-theory and gravity amplitudes that follow from the duality between color and kinematics.

Dual conformal symmetry of 1-loop NMHV amplitudes in N=4 SYM theory

We prove that 1-loop n-point NMHV superamplitudes in N=4 SYM theory are dual conformal covariant for all numbers n of external particles (after regularization and subtraction of IR divergences). This property was previously established for n < 10 in arXiv:0808.0491. We derive an explicit representation of these superamplitudes in terms of dual conformal cross-ratios. We also show that all the 1-loop `box coefficients' obtained from maximal cuts of N^kMHV n-point functions are covariant under dual conformal transformations.

A super MHV vertex expansion for N=4 SYM theory

We present a supersymmetric generalization of the MHV vertex expansion for all tree amplitudes in N=4 SYM theory. In addition to the choice of a reference spinor, this super MHV vertex expansion also depends on four reference Grassmann parameters. We demonstrate that a significant fraction of diagrams in the expansion vanishes for a judicious choice of these Grassmann parameters, which simplifies the computation of amplitudes. Even pure-gluon amplitudes require fewer diagrams than in the ordinary MHV vertex expansion. We show that the super MHV vertex expansion arises from the recursion relation associated with a holomorphic all-line supershift. This is a supersymmetric generalization of the holomorphic all-line shift recently introduced in arXiv:0811.3624. We study the large-z behavior of generating functions under these all-line supershifts, and find that they generically provide 1/z^k falloff at (Next-to)^k MHV level. In the case of anti-MHV generating functions, we find that a careful choice of shift parameters guarantees a stronger 1/z^(k+4) falloff. These particular all-line supershifts may therefore play an important role in extending the super MHV vertex expansion to N=8 supergravity.

Recursion Relations, Generating Functions, and Unitarity Sums in N=4 SYM Theory

We prove that the MHV vertex expansion is valid for any NMHV tree amplitude of N=4 SYM. The proof uses induction to show that there always exists a complex deformation of three external momenta such that the amplitude falls off at least as fast as 1/z for large z. This validates the generating function for n-point NMHV tree amplitudes. We also develop generating functions for anti-MHV and anti-NMHV amplitudes. As an application, we use these generating functions to evaluate several examples of intermediate state sums on unitarity cuts of 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-loop amplitudes. In a separate analysis, we extend the recent results of arXiv:0808.0504 to prove that there exists a valid 2-line shift for any n-point tree amplitude of N=4 SYM. This implies that there is a BCFW recursion relation for any tree amplitude of the theory.

Proof of the MHV vertex expansion for all tree amplitudes in N=4 SYM theory

We prove the MHV vertex expansion for all tree amplitudes of N=4 SYM theory. The proof uses a shift acting on all external momenta, and we show that every N^kMHV tree amplitude falls off as 1/z^k, or faster, for large z under this shift. The MHV vertex expansion allows us to derive compact and efficient generating functions for all N^kMHV tree amplitudes of the theory. We also derive an improved form of the anti-NMHV generating function. The proof leads to a curious set of sum rules for the diagrams of the MHV vertex expansion.

The boundary state from open string fields

We construct a class of BRST-invariant closed string states for any classical solution of open string field theory. The closed string state is a nonlinear functional of the open string field and changes by a BRST-exact term under a gauge transformation of the solution. As a result, its contraction with an on-shell closed string state provides a gauge-invariant observable of open string field theory. Unlike previously known observables, however, the contraction with off-shell closed string states in the Fock space is well defined and regular. Moreover, we claim that the BRST-invariant closed string state coincides, up to a possible BRST-exact term, with the boundary state of the boundary conformal field theory which the solution is expected to describe. Our construction requires a choice of a propagator strip. If we choose the Schnabl propagator strip, the BRST-invariant state becomes explicitly calculable. We calculate it for various known analytic solutions of open string field theory and, remarkably, we find that it precisely coincides with the boundary state without any additional BRST-exact term. Our results imply, in particular, that the wildly oscillatory rolling tachyon solution of open string field theory actually describes the regular closed string physics studied by Sen using the boundary state.

One-Loop Riemann Surfaces in Schnabl Gauge

Due to a peculiar behavior at the open string midpoint, loop diagrams in Schnabl gauge were expected to fail to produce the relevant closed string moduli. We find that closed string moduli are generated because the Riemann surfaces are built with slanted wedges: semi-infinite strips whose edges have parameterizations related by scaling. We examine in detail one-loop string diagrams and find that the closed string modulus is always produced. Moreover, the conformal maps simplify so greatly that both closed and open moduli become simple calculable functions of the Schwinger parameters, a simplification that occurs neither in Siegel gauge nor in light-cone gauge.

Analytic Solutions for Marginal Deformations in Open String Field Theory

We develop a calculable analytic approach to marginal deformations in open string field theory using wedge states with operator insertions. For marginal operators with regular operator products, we construct analytic solutions to all orders in the deformation parameter. In particular, we construct an exact time-dependent solution that describes D-brane decay and incorporates all alpha' corrections. For marginal operators with singular operator products, we construct solutions by regularizing the singularity and adding counterterms. We explicitly carry out the procedure to third order in the deformation parameter.

Linear b-Gauges for Open String Fields

Motivated by Schnabl's gauge choice, we explore open string perturbation theory in gauges where a linear combination of antighost oscillators annihilates the string field. We find that in these linear b-gauges different gauge conditions are needed at different ghost numbers. We derive the full propagator and prove the formal properties which guarantee that the Feynman diagrams reproduce the correct on-shell amplitudes. We find that these properties can fail due to the need to regularize the propagator, and identify a large class of linear b-gauges for which they hold rigorously. In these gauges the propagator has a non-anomalous Schwinger representation and builds Riemann surfaces by adding strip-like domains. Projector-based gauges, like Schnabl's, are not in this class of gauges but we construct a family of regular linear b-gauges which interpolate between Siegel gauge and Schnabl gauge.

General marginal deformations in open superstring field theory

We construct analytic solutions of open superstring field theory for any exactly marginal deformation in any boundary superconformal field theory when properly renormalized operator products of the marginal operator are given. Our construction is an extension of the general framework for marginal deformations developed in arXiv:0707.4472 for open bosonic string field theory, and the solutions are based on integrated vertex operators which are closely related to finite deformations in boundary superconformal field theory.

Exact marginality in open string field theory: a general framework

We construct analytic solutions of open bosonic string field theory for any exactly marginal deformation in any boundary conformal field theory when properly renormalized operator products of the marginal operator are given. We explicitly provide such renormalized operator products for a class of marginal deformations which include the deformations of flat D-branes in flat backgrounds by constant massless modes of the gauge field and of the scalar fields on the D-branes, the cosine potential for a space-like coordinate, and the hyperbolic cosine potential for the time-like coordinate. In our construction we use integrated vertex operators, which are closely related to finite deformations in boundary conformal field theory, while previous analytic solutions were based on unintegrated vertex operators. We also introduce a modified star product to formulate string field theory around the deformed background.
