Pair density wave order from non-symmorphic momentum symmetry

We develop a class of microscopic lattice models in which pair density wave order emerges in the asymptotically exact weak coupling limit. The underlying mechanism is due to non-symmorphic momentum symmetry implied by the models' projective space group representation of electrons. Our mechanism suggests moir\'e systems and extended s-wave altermagnets as potential hosts for pair density wave order.

Exotic Electronic Order in a Parabolic Kagome Semimetal

We study an interacting kagome-lattice realization of a quadratic band-touching semimetal at 2/3 filling with onsite and nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions. Combining functional renormalization group and slave-boson approaches, we map its phase diagram from intermediate to strong coupling and uncover a hierarchy of unconventional electronic orders. The leading instabilities comprise loop-current order, spontaneous altermagnetism arising from a spin-Pomeranchuk instability, and spin-loop-current order with distinctive and largely unexplored properties. We demonstrate how the interplay of band kinematics, electronic interactions, and quantum geometry governs the selection of these phases. Our findings establish quadratic band-touching semimetals as a promising platform for unconventional symmetry breaking and suggest analogous phenomena in other parabolic semimetals.

Slave-boson Formalism for Superconducting Pairing at Strong Coupling

We study the emergence of superconductivity in the one-band Hubbard model using the spin-rotation-invariant Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson (SB) approach. Motivated by its intrinsically renormalized mean-field ground state, we construct an effective pairing vertex from dynamical fluctuations about the saddle point. Solving the anisotropic, frequency-dependent gap equation on the square lattice, we map the pairing instabilities across doping, interaction, temperature and real-frequency gap structure that qualitatively match experimental cuprate observations. This framework merges strong-correlation SB-type renormalizations with RPA-type pairing transparency, providing a scalable route to modeling multi-orbital superconductivity at strong coupling.

Altermagnons at the metal-insulator transition

By means of slave-boson theory for the Hubbard model on the checkerboard lattice, we calculate dynamical altermagnetic spin susceptibilities from the metallic to the Mott-insulating regime. We track magnon dispersion and lifetime renormalization, allowing us to uncover a crossover from a chirality-selective dissipation of magnon modes to coherent yet strongly deformed chiral magnon branches across the metal insulator transition. Our formalism lends itself to a quantitative description of collective spin dynamics in correlated altermagnets.

Engineering altermagnetic orders on the square-kagome lattice through sublattice interference

We investigate the emergence of altermagnetic (AM) phases on the square-kagome lattice. Our analysis reveals that matrix element effects due to an orthogonal sublattice weight decomposition of Fermi level eigenstates known as sublattice interference enable decoupled magnetic ordering tendencies on distinct sublattices. Depending on which sublattice undergoes a magnetic instability, we identify a $d_{xy}$-type AM phase and a $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-type AM phase originating from different sublattice polarization patterns. Using the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave boson formalism we explore the stability of these AM phases as a function of interaction strength. Our findings demonstrate that sublattice-selective magnetic instabilities provide a versatile route to engineer the nature of AM order.

Extended s-wave altermagnets

We propose extended s-wave altermagnets (sAMs) as a class of magnetic states which are fully gapped, spin-compensated, and feature spin-polarized bands. sAMs are formed through valley-exchange symmetries, which act as momentum-space translations beyond standard crystallographic spin-group classifications. Using an effective two-valley model, we demonstrate that sAMs exhibit isotropic spin splitting, enable spin-selective transport in tailored heterostructures, and give rise to descendant pair density wave order. From a microscopic sAM minimal model, we develop the guiding principles to identify sAMs in quantum magnets.

Altermagnetic phase transition in a Lieb metal

We analyze the phase transition between a symmetric metallic parent state and itinerant altermagnetic order. The underlying mechanism we reveal in our microscopic model of electrons on a Lieb lattice does not involve orbital ordering, but derives from sublattice interference.

Incommensurate magnetic order: A fingerprint for electronic correlations in hole-doped cuprates

Intertwined charge and magnetic fluctuations in high-$T_\text{c}$ copper oxide superconductors (cuprates) are hypothesized to be a consequence of their correlated electronic nature. Among other observables, this is apparent in the doping dependence of incommensurate magnetic order, known as the Yamada relation (YR). We analyze the Hubbard model to challenge the universality of YR as a function of interaction strength $U$ through Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson (SB) mean-field theory and truncated unity functional renormalization group (TUFRG). While TUFRG tends to lock in to a doping dependence of the incommensurate magnetic ordering vector obtained for the perturbative weak-coupling limit, SB not only exhibits an enhanced sensitivity upon a variation of $U$ from weak to strong coupling, but also shows good agreement with experimental data. It supports the placement of weakly hole-doped cuprates in the intermediate-to-strong coupling regime.

Interplay of spin and charge order in the electron-doped cuprates

We study magnetic and charge order in the electron-doped high-$T_c$ cuprates based on the one-band Hubbard model with onsite ($U$) and nearest-neighbor $(V)$ interactions. To investigate the interplay between the orders, we employ the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson method and analyze fluctuations descending from an antiferromagnetic parent state. Our analysis reveals incommensurate charge order whose ordering vector matches the doping-dependence of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements in Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (NCCO). From our calculations of paramagnon dispersion as well as dynamical charge and spin structure factors, we reproduce all qualitative features of the RIXS signal.

From high-$T_c$ to low-$T_c$: Multi-orbital effects in transition metal oxides

Despite the structural resemblance of certain cuprate and nickelate parent compounds there is a striking spread of $T_c$ among such transition metal oxide superconductors. We adopt a minimal two-orbital $e_g$ model which covers cuprates and nickelate heterostructures in different parametric limits, and analyse its superconducting instabilities. The joint consideration of interactions, doping, Fermiology, and in particular the $e_g$ orbital splitting allows us to explain the strongly differing pairing propensities in cuprate and nickelate superconductors.

Harmonic Fingerprint of Unconventional Superconductivity in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

Microscopic details such as interactions and Fermiology determine the structure of superconducting pairing beyond the spatial symmetry classification along irreducible point group representations. From the effective pairing vertex, the pairing wave function related to superconducting order unfolds in its orbital-resolved Fourier profile which we call the harmonic fingerprint (HFP). The HFP allows to formulate a concise connection between microsopic parameter changes and their impact on superconductivity. From a random phase approximation analysis of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) involving $d+id$, $s_{\pm}$, and $f$-wave order, we find that nonlocal interactions, which unavoidably enter the low-energy electronic description of TBG, not only increase the weight of higher lattice harmonics but also have a significant effect on the orbital structure of these pairing states. For gapped unconventional superconducting order such as $s_{\pm}$ and $d+id$, a change in HPF induces enhanced gap anisotropies. Experimental implications to distinguish the different gaps and HPFs are also discussed.

Slave-Boson analysis of the 2D Hubbard model

We present a comprehensive study of the 2D one-band Hubbard model applying the spin rotation invariant slave-boson method. We utilize a spiral magnetic mean field and fluctuations around a paramagnetic mean field to determine the magnetic phase diagram and find the two approaches to be in good agreement. Apart from the commensurate phases characterized by ordering wave vectors $\boldsymbol Q = (π, π), (0, π)$, and $(0, 0)$ we find incommensurate phases where the ordering wave vectors $\boldsymbol Q = (Q, Q)$, and $(Q, π)$ vary continuously with filling, interaction strength or temperature. The mean field quantities magnetization and effective mass are found to change discontinuously at the phase boundaries separating the $(Q, Q)$ and $(Q, π)$ phases, indicating a first order transition. The band structure and Fermi surface is shown in selected cases. The dynamic spin and charge susceptibilities as well as the structure factors are calculated and discussed, including the emergence of collective modes of the zero sound and Mott insulator type. The dynamical conductivity is calculated in dependence of doping, interaction strength and temperature. Finally, a temperature-interaction strength phase diagram is established.

Topology and Magnetism in the Kondo Insulator Phase Diagram

Topological Kondo insulators are a rare example of an interaction-enabled topological phase of matter in three-dimensional crystals - making them an intriguing but also hard case for theoretical studies. Here, we aim to advance their theoretical understanding by solving the paradigmatic two-band model for topological Kondo-insulators using a fully spin-rotation invariant slave-boson treatment. Within a mean-field approximation, we map out the magnetic phase diagram and characterize both antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases by their topological properties. Among others, we identify an antiferromagnetic insulator that shows, for suitable crystal terminations, topologically protected hinge modes. Furthermore, Gaussian fluctuations of the slave boson fields around their mean-field value are included in order to establish the stability of the mean-field solution through computation of the full dynamical susceptibility.
