How alive is constrained SUSY really?

Constrained supersymmetric models like the CMSSM might look less attractive nowadays because of fine tuning arguments. They also might look less probable in terms of Bayesian statistics. The question how well the model under study describes the data, however, is answered by frequentist p-values. Thus, for the first time, we calculate a p-value for a supersymmetric model by performing dedicated global toy fits. We combine constraints from low-energy and astrophysical observables, Higgs boson mass and rate measurements as well as the non-observation of new physics in searches for supersymmetry at the LHC. Using the framework Fittino, we perform global fits of the CMSSM to the toy data and find that this model is excluded at more than 95% confidence level.

Squark Production and Decay matched with Parton Showers at NLO

Extending previous work on the predictions for the production of supersymmetric (SUSY) particles at the LHC, we present the fully differential calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) SUSY-QCD corrections to the production of squark and squark-antisquark pairs of the first two generations. The NLO cross sections are combined with the subsequent decay of the final state (anti)squarks into the lightest neutralino and (anti)quark at NLO SUSY-QCD. No assumptions on the squark masses are made, and the various subchannels are taken into account independently. In order to obtain realistic predictions for differential distributions the fixed-order calculations have to be combined with parton showers. Making use of the Powheg method we have implemented our results in the Powheg-Box framework and interfaced the NLO calculation with the parton shower Monte Carlo programs Pythia6 and Herwig++. The code is publicly available and can be downloaded from the Powheg-Box webpage. The impact of the NLO corrections on the differential distributions is studied and parton shower effects are investigated for different benchmark scenarios.

Neutral MSSM Higgs-boson production with heavy quarks: NLO supersymmetric QCD corrections

Within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) the associated production of neutral Higgs bosons with top and bottom quarks belongs to the most important Higgs-boson production processes at the LHC. At large values of tan(beta), in particular, bottom--Higgs associated production constitutes the dominant production channel within the MSSM. We have calculated the next-to-leading-order supersymmetric QCD corrections to neutral Higgs production through the parton processes q qbar, gg -> t tbar / b bbar + h/H/A and present results for the total cross sections. The genuine SUSY-QCD corrections are of moderate size for small tan(beta), but can be sizable for large tan(beta). In the latter case the bulk of these corrections can be absorbed into effective bottom Yukawa couplings.

Matching Squark Pair Production at NLO with Parton Showers

The pair production of squarks is one of the main search channels for supersymmetry at the LHC. We present a fully differential calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) SUSY-QCD corrections to the on-shell production of a pair of squarks in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), supplemented by the leading-order decay of the squarks to the lightest neutralino and a quark. In addition, we use the Powheg method to match our NLO calculation with parton showers. To this end, the process was implemented in the Powheg-Box framework and interfaced with Pythia6 and Herwig++. We study the differential scale dependence and K-factors, and investigate the effects of the parton showers for a benchmark scenario in the constrained MSSM.

Constrained Supersymmetry after the Higgs Boson Discovery: A global analysis with Fittino

We present preliminary results from the latest global fit analysis of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) performed within the Fittino framework. The fit includes low-energy and astrophysical observables as well as collider constraints from the non-observation of new physics in supersymmetric searches at the LHC. Furthermore, the Higgs boson mass and signal rate measurements from both the LHC and Tevatron experiments are included via the program HiggsSignals. Although the LHC exclusion limits and the Higgs mass measurements put tight constraints on the viable parameter space, we find an acceptable fit quality once the Higgs signal rates are included.

Constraints on models with universal extra dimensions from dilepton searches at the LHC

Models with universal extra dimensions predict that each Standard Model particle is accompanied by a tower of Kaluza-Klein resonances. Canonical searches for the production and cascade decays of first Kaluza-Klein modes through missing transverse momentum signatures suffer in general from low detection efficiencies because of the rather compressed Kaluza-Klein particle mass spectrum. Here, instead we analyze signatures from the production of second Kaluza-Klein states which can decay into Standard Model particles and thus do not result in any missing transverse momentum. Such signatures provide a strong sensitivity, and are of particular interest as they would allow for a clear distinction between extra dimension models and other models of new physics like supersymmetry. We constrain the production of second Kaluza-Klein particles from recent LHC searches for dilepton resonances, and place limits on the compactification scale to be larger than 715GeV, and on the masses of the second Kaluza-Klein particles to be larger than 1.4TeV.

Exploring QCD uncertainties when setting limits on compressed SUSY spectra

If Supersymmetry (SUSY) has a compressed spectrum the current limits from the LHC can be drastically reduced. We take possible `worst case' scenarios where combinations of the stop, squark and gluino masses are degenerate with the mass of the lightest SUSY particle. To accurately derive limits in the model, care must be taken when describing QCD radiation and we examine this in detail. Lower mass bounds are then produced by considering all the 7 TeV hadronic SUSY and monojet searches. The evolution of the limits as the mass splitting is varied is also presented.

Illuminating Dark Matter at the ILC

The WIMP (weakly interacting massive particle) paradigm for dark matter is currently being probed via many different experiments. Direct detection, indirect detection and collider searches are all hoping to catch a glimpse of these elusive particles. Here, we examine the potential of the ILC (International Linear Collider) to shed light on the origin of dark matter. By using an effective field theory approach we are also able to compare the reach of the ILC with that of the other searches. We find that for low mass dark matter (< 10 GeV), the ILC offers a unique opportunity to search for WIMPS beyond any other experiment. In addition, if dark matter happens to only couple to leptons or via a spin dependent interaction, the ILC can give an unrivalled window to these models. We improve on previous ILC studies by constructing a comprehensive list of effective theories that allows us to move beyond the non-relativistic approximation.

How low can SUSY go? Matching, monojets and compressed spectra

If supersymmetry (SUSY) has a compressed spectrum then the current mass limits from the LHC can be drastically reduced. We consider a possible 'worst case' scenario where the gluino and/or squarks are degenerate with the lightest SUSY particle (LSP). The most sensitive searches for these compressed spectra are via the final state LSPs recoiling against initial state radiation (ISR). Therefore it is vital that the ISR is understood and possible uncertainties in the predictions are evaluated. We use both MLM (with Pythia 6) and CKKW- L (with Pythia 8) matching and vary matching scales and parton shower properties to accurately determine the theoretical uncertainties in the kinematic distributions. All current LHC SUSY and monojet analyses are employed and we find the most constraining limits come from the CMS Razor and CMS monojet searches. For a scenario of squarks degenerate with the LSP and decoupled gluinos we find $M_{\tilde{q}}>340$ GeV. For gluinos degenerate with the LSP and decoupled squarks, $M_{\tilde{g}}>500$ GeV. For equal mass squarks and gluinos degenerate with the LSP, $M_{\tilde{q},\tilde{g}}>650$ GeV.

Supersymmetry production cross sections in pp collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV

This document emerged from work that started in January 2012 as a joint effort by the ATLAS, CMS and LPCC supersymmetry (SUSY) working groups to compile state-of-the-art cross section predictions for SUSY particle production at the LHC. We present cross sections for various SUSY processes in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =7$ TeV, including an estimate of the theoretical uncertainty due to scale variation and the parton distribution functions. Further results for higher LHC centre-of-mass energies will be collected at https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/LHCPhysics/SUSYCrossSections. For squark and gluino production, which dominate the inclusive SUSY cross section, we employ calculations which include the resummation of soft gluon emission at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, matched to next-to-leading order (NLO) SUSY-QCD. In all other cases we rely on NLO SUSY-QCD predictions.

NNLL resummation for squark-antisquark production

We report on the resummation of soft-gluon emissions for squark-antisquark production at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We will put particular emphasis on the one loop hard matching coefficients required to perform the resummation. Furthermore we will discuss the numerical effect of the different ingredients in the corrections. We find a significant reduction in the scale uncertainty and a considerable increase in the prediction of the total cross section at the central scale. Compared to the next-to-leading order prediction, the corrections increase the cross section by up to 30% for 1.5 TeV squarks at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC.

Bottom-quark associated Higgs-boson production: reconciling the four- and five-flavour scheme approach

The main arguments in the discussion of the proper treatment of the total inclusive cross section for bottom-quark associated Higgs-boson production are briefly reviewed. A simple and pragmatic formula for the combination of the so-called four- and five-flavour schemes is suggested, including the treatment of the respective theory error estimates. The numerical effects of this matching formula are discussed.

Improved squark and gluino mass limits from searches for supersymmetry at hadron colliders

Squarks and gluinos have been searched for at hadron colliders in events with multiple jets and missing transverse energy. No excess has been observed to date, and from a comparison of experimental cross section limits and theoretical cross section predictions one can deduce lower bounds on the squark and gluino masses. We present an improved analysis of squark and gluino mass bounds which is based on state-of-the-art cross section calculations including the summation of large threshold corrections. For illustration, we consider experimental data obtained by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron and discuss the impact of the improved cross section predictions on the squark and gluino mass limits.

What if the LHC does not find supersymmetry in the sqrt(s)=7 TeV run?

We investigate the implications for supersymmetry from an assumed absence of any signal in the first period of LHC data taking at 7 TeV center-of-mass energy and with 1 to 7 fb^(-1) of integrated luminosity. We consider the zero-lepton plus four jets and missing transverse energy signature, and perform a combined fit of low-energy measurements, the dark matter relic density constraint and potential LHC exclusions within a minimal supergravity model. A non-observation of supersymmetry in the first period of LHC data taking would still allow for an acceptable description of low-energy data and the dark matter relic density in terms of minimal supergravity models, but would exclude squarks and gluinos with masses below 1 TeV.

An alternative subtraction scheme for next-to-leading order QCD calculations

We propose a new subtraction scheme for next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Our scheme is based on the momentum mapping and on the splitting functions derived in the context of an improved parton shower formulation. Compared to standard schemes, the new scheme features a significantly smaller number of subtraction terms and facilitates the matching of NLO calculations with parton showers including quantum interference. We provide formulae for the momentum mapping and the subtraction terms, and present a detailed comparison with the Catani-Seymour dipole subtraction for a variety of 2 -> 2 scattering processes.

NLO QCD corrections to graviton production at hadron colliders

Models with large extra dimensions predict the existence of Kaluza-Klein graviton resonances. We compute the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to graviton plus jet hadro-production, which is an important channel for graviton searches at the Tevatron and the LHC. The QCD corrections are sizable and lead to a significant reduction of the scale dependence. We present numerical results for cross sections and distributions, and discuss the uncertainty from parton distribution functions and the ultraviolet sensitivity of the theoretical prediction.

Supersymmetric top and bottom squark production at hadron colliders

The scalar partners of top and bottom quarks are expected to be the lightest squarks in supersymmetric theories, with potentially large cross sections at hadron colliders. We present predictions for the production of top and bottom squarks at the Tevatron and the LHC, including next-to-leading order corrections in supersymmetric QCD and the resummation of soft gluon emission at next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. We discuss the impact of the higher-order corrections on total cross sections and transverse-momentum distributions, and provide an estimate of the theoretical uncertainty due to scale variation and the parton distribution functions.

SUSY parameter determination at the LHC using cross sections and kinematic edges

We study the determination of supersymmetric parameters at the LHC from a global fit including cross sections and edges of kinematic distributions. For illustration, we focus on a minimal supergravity scenario and discuss how well it can be constrained at the LHC operating at 7 and 14 TeV collision energy, respectively. We find that the inclusion of cross sections greatly improves the accuracy of the SUSY parameter determination, and allows to reliably extract model parameters even in the initial phase of LHC data taking with 7 TeV collision energy and 1/fb integrated luminosity. Moreover, cross section information may be essential to study more general scenarios, such as those with non-universal gaugino masses, and distinguish them from minimal, universal, models.
