On Democratic String Field Theories

We reexamine democratic open string field theories, namely, theories in which string fields are not constrained to a single picture number and picture changing is obtained as a gauge transformation. We describe several possibilities for regular free theories and attempt to construct the lowest order interaction term and identify the lowest order gauge transformation for some of these theories. We also discuss projections over string field spaces that might be needed for a consistent off-shell implementation of picture changing.

Optimisation of complex integration contours at higher order

We continue our study of contour deformation as a practical tool for dealing with the sign problem using the $d$-dimensional Bose gas with non-zero chemical potential as a toy model. We derive explicit expressions for contours up to the second order with respect to a natural small parameter and generalise these contours to an ansatz for which the evaluation of the Jacobian is fast ($O(1)$). We examine the behaviour of the various proposed contours as a function of space-time dimensionality, the chemical potential, and lattice size and geometry and use the mean phase factor as a measure of the severity of the sign problem. In turns out that this method leads to a substantial reduction of the sign problem and that it becomes more efficient as space-time dimensionality is increased. Correlations among contributions to $\operatorname{Im}\langle S \rangle$ play a key role in determining the mean phase factor and we examine these correlations in detail.

A simple approach towards the sign problem using path optimisation

We suggest an approach for simulating theories with a sign problem that relies on optimisation of complex integration contours that are not restricted to lie along Lefschetz thimbles. To that end we consider the toy model of a one-dimensional Bose gas with chemical potential. We identify the main contribution to the sign problem in this case as coming from a nearest neighbour interaction and approximately cancel it by an explicit deformation of the integration contour. We extend the obtained expressions to more general ones, depending on a small set of parameters. We find the optimal values of these parameters on a small lattice and study their range of validity. We also identify precursors for the onset of the sign problem. A fast method of evaluating the Jacobian related to the contour deformation is proposed and its numerical stability is examined. For a particular choice of lattice parameters, we find that our approach increases the lattice size at which the sign problem becomes serious from $L \approx 32$ to $L \approx 700$. The efficient evaluation of the Jacobian ($O(L)$ for a sweep) results in running times that are of the order of a few minutes on a standard laptop.

Lattice String Field Theory: The linear dilaton in one dimension

We propose the use of lattice field theory for the study of string field theory at the non-perturbative quantum level. We identify many potential obstacles and examine possible resolutions thereof. We then experiment with our approach in the particularly simple case of a one-dimensional linear dilaton and analyse the results.

Analytical solutions of pure-spinor superstring field theory

We examine the possibility of constructing analytical solutions describing marginal deformations in the open superstring field theory that is based on the non-minimal pure-spinor formalism. It is found out that some methods used for constructing solutions of bosonic and RNS string field theories do not seem to generalize to the pure-spinor case, while other methods do lead to reliable analytical solutions.

Open superstring field theory I: gauge fixing, ghost structure, and propagator

The WZW form of open superstring field theory has linearized gauge invariances associated with the BRST operator Q and the zero mode eta_0 of the picture minus-one fermionic superconformal ghost. We discuss gauge fixing of the free theory in a simple class of gauges using the Faddeev-Popov method. We find that the world-sheet ghost number of ghost and antighost string fields ranges over all integers, except one, and at any fixed ghost number, only a finite number of picture numbers appear. We calculate the propagators in a variety of gauges and determine the field-antifield content and the free master action in the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. Unlike the case of bosonic string field theory, the resulting master action is not simply related to the original gauge-invariant action by relaxing the constraint on the ghost and picture numbers.

Analytical Solutions of Open String Field Theory

In this work we review Schnabl's construction of the tachyon vacuum solution to bosonic covariant open string field theory and the results that followed. We survey the state of the art of string field theory research preceding this construction focusing on Sen's conjectures and the results obtained using level truncation methods. The tachyon vacuum solution can be described in various ways. We describe its geometric representation using wedge states, its formal algebraic representation as a pure-gauge solution and its oscillator representation. We also describe the analytical proofs of some of Sen's conjectures for this solution. The tools used in the context of the vacuum solution can be adapted to the construction of other solutions, namely various marginal deformations. We present some of the approaches used in the construction of these solutions. The generalization of these ideas to open superstring field theory is explained in detail. We start from the exposition of the problems one faces in the construction of superstring field theory. We then present the cubic and the non-polynomial versions of superstring field theory and discuss a proposal suggesting their classical equivalence. Finally, the bosonic solutions are generalized to this case. In particular, we focus on the (somewhat surprising) generalization of the tachyon solution to the case of a theory with no tachyons.

Democratic Superstring Field Theory: Gauge Fixing

We show that a partial gauge fixing of the NS sector of the democratic-picture superstring field theory leads to the non-polynomial theory. Moreover, by partially gauge fixing the Ramond sector we obtain a non-polynomial fully RNS theory at pictures 0 and 1/2. Within the democratic theory and in the partially gauge fixed theory the equations of motion of both sectors are derived from an action. We also discuss a representation of the non-polynomial theory analogous to a manifestly two-dimensional representation of WZW theory and the action of bosonic pure-gauge solutions. We further demonstrate that one can consistently gauge fix the NS sector of the democratic theory at picture number -1. The resulting theory is new. It is a Z_2 dual of the modified cubic theory. We construct analytical solutions of this theory and show that they possess the desired properties.

Democratic Superstring Field Theory and its Gauge Fixing

This work is my contribution to the proceedings of the conference "SFT2010 - the third international conference on string field theory and related topics" and it reflects my talk there, which described the democratic string field theory and its gauge fixing. The democratic string field theory is the only fully RNS string field theory to date. It lives in the large Hilbert space and includes all picture numbers. Picture changing amounts in this formalism to a gauge transformation. We describe the theory and its properties and show that when partially gauge fixed it can be reduced to the modified theory and to the non-polynomial theory. In the latter case we can even include the Ramond sector in the picture-fixed action. We also show that another partial gauge-fixing leads to a new consistent string field theory at picture number -1.

Superstring field theory in the democratic picture

We present a new open superstring field theory, whose string fields carry an arbitrary picture number and reside in the large Hilbert space. The redundancy related to picture number is resolved by treating picture changing as a gauge transformation. A mid-point insertion is imperative for this formalism. We find that this mid-point insertion must include all multi-picture changing operators. It is also proven that this insertion as well as all the multi-picture changing operators are zero weight conformal primaries. This new theory solves the problems with the Ramond sector shared by other RNS string field theories, while naturally unifying the NS and Ramond string fields. When partially gauge fixed, it reduces in the NS sector to the modified cubic superstring field theory. Hence, it shares all the good properties of this theory, e.g., it has analytical vacuum and marginal deformation solutions. Treating the redundant gauge symmetry using the BV formalism is straightforward and results in a cubic action with a single string field, whose quantum numbers are unconstrained. The generalization to an arbitrary brane system is simple and includes the standard Chan-Paton factors and the most general string field consistent with the brane system.

Lattice String Field Theory

String field theory is a candidate for a full non-perturbative definition of string theory. We aim to define string field theory on a space-time lattice to investigate its behaviour at the quantum level. Specifically, we look at string field theory in a one dimensional linear dilaton background. We report the first results of our simulations.

Superstring field theory equivalence: Ramond sector

We prove that the finite gauge transformation of the Ramond sector of the modified cubic superstring field theory is ill-defined due to collisions of picture changing operators. Despite this problem we study to what extent could a bijective classical correspondence between this theory and the (presumably consistent) non-polynomial theory exist. We find that the classical equivalence between these two theories can almost be extended to the Ramond sector: We construct mappings between the string fields (NS and Ramond, including Chan-Paton factors and the various GSO sectors) of the two theories that send solutions to solutions in a way that respects the linearized gauge symmetries in both sides and keeps the action of the solutions invariant. The perturbative spectrum around equivalent solutions is also isomorphic. The problem with the cubic theory implies that the correspondence of the linearized gauge symmetries cannot be extended to a correspondence of the finite gauge symmetries. Hence, our equivalence is only formal, since it relates a consistent theory to an inconsistent one. Nonetheless, we believe that the fact that the equivalence formally works suggests that a consistent modification of the cubic theory exists. We construct a theory that can be considered as a first step towards a consistent RNS cubic theory.

On string fields and superstring field theories

We offer some thoughts regarding the space of string fields. We suggest that this space should be identified as the odd component of a star-algebra and focus among other issues on the role of the mid-point. We argue that theories with mid-point insertions in the action, such as the modified cubic theory can be well behaved, even if this mid-point insertion has a non-trivial kernel. We then discuss the recent proposal by Berkovits and Siegel of a non-minimal superstring field theory. In this theory the action contains a mid-point insertion of a non-zero conformal weight. We show that, while this is a-priori a problem, it might be possible (in the NS sector) to make sense out of this theory by regularizing it. A cleaner resolution of the problem is to extend the non-minimal sector in a way that allows a zero-weight mid-point insertion with the desired properties. We also study the generalisation of the theory to the NS- sector and explain the problems with defining the Ramond sectors. We show that the non-minimal theory supports all the known solutions of the standard modified cubic superstring field theory, including the GSO+ vacuum solution. The properties of the solutions carry over to the non-minimal theory. In particular, the vacuum solution has the correct tension and cohomology.

Comments on superstring field theory and its vacuum solution

We prove that the NS cubic superstring field theories are classically equivalent, regardless of the choice of Y_{-2} in their definition, and illustrate it by an explicit evaluation of the action of Erler's solution. We then turn to examine this solution. First, we explain that its cohomology is trivial also in the Ramond sector. Then, we show that the boundary state corresponding to it is identically zero. We conclude that this solution is indeed a closed string vacuum solution despite the absence of a tachyon field on the BPS D-brane.

On the classical equivalence of superstring field theories

We construct mappings that send solutions of the cubic and non-polynomial open superstring field theories to each other. We prove that the action is invariant under the maps and that gauge orbits are mapped into gauge orbits. It follows that the perturbative spectrum around solutions is the same in both theories. The mappings also preserve the string field reality condition. We generalize to the cases of a non-BPS D-brane and of multi-D-brane systems. We analyze the recently found analytical solutions of the cubic action, both in the BPS sector and the non-BPS sector and show that they span a one parameter family of solutions with empty cohomology and identical action, which suggests that they are gauge equivalent. We write the gauge transformations relating these solutions explicitly. This seems to suggest that open superstring field theory is able to describe a vacuum solution even around a BPS D-brane.

Marginal deformation for the photon in superstring field theory

We find solutions of supersymmetric string field theory that correspond to the photon marginal deformation in the boundary conformal field theory. We revisit the bosonic string marginal deformation and generate a real solution for it. We find a map between the solutions of bosonic and supersymmetric string field theories and suggest a universal solution to superstring field theory.

Marginal deformations in string field theory

We describe a method for obtaining analytic solutions corresponding to exact marginal deformations in open bosonic string field theory. For the photon marginal deformation we have an explicit analytic solution to all orders. Our construction is based on a pure gauge solution where the gauge field is not in the Hilbert space. We show that the solution itself is nevertheless perfectly regular. We study its gauge transformations and calculate some coefficients explicitly. Finally, we discuss how our method can be implemented for other marginal deformations.

Universal regularization for string field theory

We find an analytical regularization for string field theory calculations. This regularization has a simple geometric meaning on the worldsheet, and is therefore universal as level truncation. However, our regularization has the added advantage of being analytical. We illustrate how to apply our regularization to both the discrete and continuous basis for the scalar field and for the bosonized ghost field, both for numerical and analytical calculations. We reexamine the inner products of wedge states, which are known to differ from unity in the oscillator representation in contrast to the expectation from level truncation. These inner products describe also the descent relations of string vertices. The results of applying our regularization strongly suggest that these inner products indeed equal unity. We also revisit Schnabl's algebra and show that the unwanted constant vanishes when using our regularization even in the oscillator representation.
